Passepartouts em todos os géneros. Rua Ivens, 59 e Calçada do Combro, 30 A, 1º Dto. Tel. central 2567 e 1016. Lisboa.» ROMANTIC PORTRAIT OF NONCHALANT LADY. Black and white picture coloured with retouching photographic oil-paint. Signed: Lazarus [Lisbon] 1925. Dim.: 21 x 27 cm. Contemporary wooden frame (thickness: 6 cm) with application of fine golden geometrical plaster, much to the neo-classic style. It has an original commercial sticker of Lazarus Photography Company glued in the back of the frame with the following statement [translation in current English]: ?J. & M. Lazarus ? English Photography. Artistic Portraits, Large Scale Photographs, Paintings. Wide range of frames and passe-partouts, both manufactured by us and from the best foreign origins. Gilders and manufacturers of mouldings and frames. All types of Passe-partouts. Rua Ivens, 59 and Calçada do Combro, 30 A, 1º Dto. Telephone: 2567 and 1016. Lisbon.? The retouched photography is a distinct and separate form of art, which can be placed between photography and painting. The last retouching masters saw their activity extinguished by the end of the 20th century with the onset of digital. This work, a magnificent artistic oil painting over a photograph in a gilt sculpted original frame manufactered by them (neo classic style), combines the several types of techniques used and manufactered

[MENDELEEV AND TROTSKY. CHEMISTRY IS REVOLUTION] D.I. Mendeleev i marksizm: Doklad chetviortomu Mendeleevskovu s'ezdu po chistoi i prikladnoi khimii 17 sentiabria 1925 g. [i.e. D.I. Mendeleev and Marxism: Report to the Fourth Mendeleev Congress on General and Applied Chemistry on 17th of September, 1925]

Moscow: GIZ, 1925. 24 pp., 1 port. 22x14,6 cm. In original printed wrappers. Covers slightly rubbed, foxing, a few pencil marks in text, bookshop's stamp on the recto of the rear cover. Otherwise very good. Extremely rare. In the beginning of 1925 Lev Trotsky (1879-1940) was smashed from Stalin, Zinoviev and Kamenev's coalition, and during the year he wasn't involved in political activity. Already in 1927 he was excluded from the party and in 1929 he was expelled from the country. The process of his 'desacralization' had begun immediately, and since 1938 in every literary source he was considered as 'the universal villain, the bastard of the «bourgeois-fascist» hell, the demon of the world communist system'. This edition is one of the last printed works in Soviet Union and very rare because of the ban of his works in USSR. During 1925 he strengthened his position as an ideologist by publishing a few articles titled «To Socialism or Capitalism?» At the Mendeleev's Congress he read his report on Mendeleev and marxism, and as he was a talented interpreter and orator the report was received very well. He claimed that Mendeleev opposed religion in the preface of The Basics of Chemistry. Trotsky called chemistry the school of revolutionary thought adding that it was not because of the explosives, as explosives did not necessarily serve the revolution. Trotsky claimed that all Mendeleev's social works were written 'empirically', and that one could only understand his ideas interpreting his science and applying it to philosophy and sociology. According to Trotsky Mendeleev used dialectic principle of conversion of quantity to quality, hence he's a marxist. By the end of this skillful speech Mendeleev was turned into a marxist. Another opinion on the matter had Vladimir Ipatiev (1867-1952), Russian-American chemist who was present at the conference, and according to him «if one listened closely to it [the report], one would had unpleasant impression. Everyone who knew Mendeleev, or heard of him, or read his non-chemical works knew that he wasn't ever close to marxist ideas. He escaped poverty and knew the value of money and was very provident. He saved himself a hefty fortune, and was more like a capitalist but never a marxist. Trotsky was well-prepared and interpreted the meaning of the periodic law correctly, his data and interpretations were right but in general this lecture was useless for chemists. Mendeleev's quotes that Trotsky used to prove him even slightly a marxist were useless». A fascinating meeting of two great minds in one context. No copies in the USA according to Worldcat.

Negro Myths from the Georgia Coast

, 1925. 1925. JONES, Charles C., Jr. Negro Myths from the Georgia Coast. Told in the Vernacular. Columbia, South Carolina: The State Company, 1925. Small octavo, original dark purple cloth gilt, original dust jacket. $1500.Later edition of Jones' written record of traditional African trickster stories as told in the Gullah creole, in rare original dust jacket.Raised on three Georgia plantations owned by his wealthy Presbyterian clergyman father, Charles Collock Jones, Jr. spent much time around ""Gullah-speaking people whose folkways and folklore provided Jones with resources for some of his later published materials… Jones is best known for his writings on the history of Georgia and for his studies of Native-American antiquities… [He] was a meticulous scholar whose concern for details often limited the scope of his studies"" (ANB). This volume ""preserved Gullah dialect versions of the African trickster tales more commonly associated with the Uncle Remus tales of Joel Chandler Harris"" (Georgia Encyclopedia). Jones pursued a more ethnological approach than did Harris; his was ""the first attempt to record systematically the dialect used on the Georgia and the South Carolina coast. The glossary of 450 words and expressions… is a valuable addition"" (Georgia Historical Quarterly 27:4, December 1943, 328-29). First published 1888. See Work, 431; Blockson 853. Book about-fine, with light offsetting to endpapers, cloth gilt bright. Rare original dust jacket extremely good, with only light wear. An excellent and attractive copy in near-fine condition.

The Fundamental Equations of Quantum Mechanics," Proceedings of the Royal Society, 109, 1925, pp. 642-653

BOUND FIRST EDITION OF AN EPOCH MAKING PAPER THAT HELPED USHER IN A NEW ERA OF QUANTUM MECHANICS. "P. A. M. Dirac's discovery of the fundamental equations of quantum theory has been seen as one of the deepest insights of the human mind into the ways in which nature works. It has allowed the formulation of the fundamental laws of nature in a manner which is as clear and compact as it is beautiful. [Dirac's paper] leaves the reader, even today, more than seventy-five years after their publication, captivated by the force of argument and the clarity of presentation" (Datta, Dirac's Early Work on Quantum Theory). In "The Fundamental Equations of Quantum Mechanics," "the unsatisfactory recipes of wave mechanics and matrix mechanics were replaced by a unified clear picture. Those who knew and admired the beauty of classical mechanics were especially impressed" (Fraser, Antimatter). Dirac's paper went a long way toward nailing down the formal mathematics of quantum mechanics; it also showed that matrix mechanics and the Schrodinger equation were simply different ways of expressing exactly the same thing. The story of Dirac's paper is a particularly compelling one. "R. H. Fowler, his research supervisor, had received a proof copy of an exploratory paper by Werner Heisenberg in the framework of the old quantum theory of Bohr and Sommerfeld, which leaned heavily on Bohr's correspondence principle but changed the equations so that they involved directly observable quantities. Fowler sent Heisenberg's paper on to Dirac, who was on vacation in Bristol, asking him to look into his paper carefully. Dirac's attention was drawn to a mysterious mathematical relationship, at first sight unintelligible, that Heisenberg had reached. "Several weeks later, back in Cambridge, Dirac suddenly recognized that this mathematical form had the same structure as the Poisson Brackets that occur in the classical dynamics of particle motion. From this thought he quickly developed a quantum theory that was based on non-commuting dynamical variables. This led him to a more profound and significant general formulation of quantum mechanics than was achieved by any other worker in this field. This was a major achievement that marked him out from others in the field. As a young, 25 year-old physicist he was quickly accepted by outstanding physicists... Dirac's quantum mechanics takes a simple and beautiful form, with a structure showing elegance and economy of concept, and linked directly with the classical theory" (Dalitz, Paul Dirac). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: The Royal Society. Complete volume. 4to. 9.75 by 7 inches (213 x 138mm). [4], vii, [653], xxxiv (obituaries), [2]. Small ex-libris stamp on the title page. The volume is illustrated throughout with in-text figures. Handsomely bound in tan cloth; red morocco labels; gilt-lettered at the spine. Minor rubbing at the edges of the boards. Bright and clean inside and out. Very good condition.

St.Mawr - This is not the book but a unique Furniture Drawer (Toolbox) made by a D.H.Lawrence enthusiast. The Drawer was made in bookform and has the St.Mawr Emblemata on the cover and the title on the spine. Excellent craftsmanship. Leather covered board.

Folio. Original Hardcover with leather covered boards. Hard to qualify this exceptional piece as Ephemera, but that is what it is. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Dimensions are 45,5cm (high), 34cm (wide), 13cm (thick). St Mawr is a short novel (or novella) written by D. H. Lawrence. It was first published in 1925. The heroine of the story, Lou Witt, abandons her sterile marriage and a brittle, cynical post-First World War England. Her sense of alienation is associated with her encounter with a high-spirited stallion, the St Mawr whose name provides the title for this tale. She eventually settles in a remote ranch set high in the mountains of New Mexico, near Taos. Lawrence wrote most of this brief novel whilst spending five months of the summer of 1924 at what is now known as the D. H. Lawrence Ranch, a property which he and wife, Frieda, acquired from Mabel Dodge Luhan earlier that year. St Mawr first appeared in St Mawr and Other Stories which, in addition to the novella, consists of two short stories 'The Overtone' and 'The Princess', and two unfinished stories 'The Wilful Woman' and 'The Flying Fish'. All these works were written during Lawrence's stay in America between 1922 and 1925. (Wikipedia)
