List of plates pasted to verso of rear portfolio cover (as issued). Three-panel portfolio has split along most of its length at both folds-- at one time, tape was applied to the verso folds, leaving dark marks. Tape still partially affixed to one of the folds. Toning and short tears to portfolio, with narrow dampstain along "spine". Small ownership stamp in Czech on verso of portfolio cover. The bookplates themselves, printed on a variety of papers, are crisp and clean. The upper left-hand corners of the mounting papers are lightly creased. Portfolio measures 16.5 cm x 21 cm closed; mounting papers measure 15 cm x 20.5 cm; bookplate measurements vary. Signed by Bochorakova-Dittrichova in pencil on title page of introductory leaflet. Number 66 of an edition of 150. A wonderful collection of images celebrating reading, study, and well-appointed libraries. Bochorakova-Dittrichova primarily worked in woodcut, so the engravings are a rare and interesting component of this early work. Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova (1894-1980) was the first female wordless novelist, and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday. She was born in the Moravian region of what is now the Czech Republic and spent most of her life in Brno, the Moravian capital. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1923 received a government scholarship to study printmaking in Paris. Bochorakova-Dittrichova's unpublished wordless novel Malířka Na Cestách [The Artist on Her Journey] recounts this period in her life. In Paris, she first encountered the wordless novels of Flemish artist Franz Masereel, the originator of the form, and was inspired to create her own. Over the course of her long career, Bochorakova-Dittrichova published several wordless novels, along with travelogues and historical works. She also worked as a printmaker and illustrator, and was highly regarded in her native land, though largely unknown elsewhere. This changed in 2014, when the National Museum of Women in the Arts held an exhibition of her work entitled "The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova," and this important artist finally began to gain global recognition. Her work, however, is still not widely available. [Attributes: First Edition]

        PROGRAM

Yiddish Art Theatre, New York 1925 - 1st Edition. Original Full-Color Wrappers, Beautifully Illustrated by Josef Foshko. 8vo. 10 pages ; 22 cm. Original Program from the Yiddish Art Theatre’s production of Romain Rolland’s "Wolves" (Les Loups) from January, 29th 1925. Maurice Schwartz, who founded the historic Yiddish Art Theater at Irving Place, both directed and starred in the show. Notably, the second part of "D’Oryon" is played by Paul Muni, listed here as "Muni Weisenfreund. " "Muni was an American stage and film actor who was born in Lemberg (Galicia, Austro-Hungarian Empire) and grew up in Chicago. He started his acting career in the Yiddish theatre. During the 1930s, he was considered one of the most prestigious actors at Warner Brothers studios, and was given the rare privilege of choosing which parts he wanted " Muni would get his break about 4 years after this show was produced in 1929. The program is from 8 years before Muni’s now famous role as Tony Camonte in the original ‘Scarface, ’ and 9 years before he won Best Actor for his role as Louis Pasteur. The program also provides a good example of the Yiddish Art Theatre’s mission. "In 1918 Schwartz founded the Yiddish Art Theatre (and) had ambitions for a people's theater that would produce classic, literary works that will bring honor to the Yiddish Theatre. "(Wikipedia, 2016) Interestingly, this would not be the only production of Rolland’s "Wolves" in Yiddish. "The Warsaw Yiddish Art Theatre sought to expose its audiences to an international repertoire rooted in contemporary social and political issues (as well) , staging plays such as Victor Hugo’s ‘Der glokntsier fun Noterdam’ (The Bell-Ringer of Notre Dame; 1925) and Romain Rolland’s ‘Velf’ (Wolves; 1926) , the latter set during the French Revolution. " (Yivo Encyclopedia, 2016) Rolland won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1915 for his renowned novel "Jean-Christophe. " Includes Cast of Characters with Credits, a diagram of the theater, and a full synopsis of the play. Also includes many many Illustrated Period Ads from Yiddish Businesses – including the "American Palestine Line, " "a steamship company, formed in 1924 in the U. S. , for the purpose of providing direct passenger service from New York to Palestine and was reportedly the first steamship company owned and operated by Jews. " (Wikipedia, 2016) . OCLC lists no copies worldwide. Program is worn with edges folded. Overall it is very attractive with bright colors and clear text. About good condition. Folio (10 by 13 inches), original gilt-stamped white linen, beveled edges, top edge gilt, uncut. $2500.Signed limited first edition of this brightly illustrated collection of childrenÂ’s stories and fairy tales, number 156 of only 500 copies signed by A.A. Original large aquatint image (13 by 17-1/2 inches), sheet measures 20-1/2 by 26 inches. $1800.Impression number 21 of only 200 copies of this beautiful full-length color aquatint of a female nude, signed by Chimot both in the plate and on the print.Influenced by Lautrec, Renoir, Rodin and later the Symbolists, Édouard Chimot taught himself painting and directed his talent primarily to etching, often for fine private-press limited editions. He had become a significant figure in the Paris art world, with a public “hungry for his late-Symbolist nudes, ‘soumises à leurs passions mortelles et délicieuses” (André Warnod).         Negro Myths from the Georgia Coast

1925. JONES, Charles C., Jr. Negro Myths from the Georgia Coast. Told in the Vernacular. Columbia, South Carolina: The State Company, 1925. Small octavo, original dark purple cloth gilt, original dust jacket. $1500.Later edition of Jones' written record of traditional African trickster stories as told in the Gullah creole, in rare original dust jacket.Raised on three Georgia plantations owned by his wealthy Presbyterian clergyman father, Charles Collock Jones, Jr. spent much time around ""Gullah-speaking people whose folkways and folklore provided Jones with resources for some of his later published materialsÂ… Jones is best known for his writings on the history of Georgia and for his studies of Native-American antiquitiesÂ… [He] was a meticulous scholar whose concern for details often limited the scope of his studies"" (ANB). This volume ""preserved Gullah dialect versions of the African trickster tales more commonly associated with the Uncle Remus tales of Joel Chandler Harris"" (Georgia Encyclopedia). Jones pursued a more ethnological approach than did Harris; his was ""the first attempt to record systematically the dialect used on the Georgia and the South Carolina coast. The glossary of 450 words and expressionsÂ… is a valuable addition"" (Georgia Historical Quarterly 27:4, December 1943, 328-29). First published 1888. See Work, 431; Blockson 853. Book about-fine, with light offsetting to endpapers, cloth gilt bright. Rare original dust jacket extremely good, with only light wear. An excellent and attractive copy in near-fine condition.

Tall octavo, contemporary full blue crushed morocco gilt, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, illustrated endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. Portfolio (11 by 14 inches) containing 12 loose matted prints, original half maroon cloth, mounted cover illustration, housed in a custom clamshell box. $8800.Limited 12-volume private-press edition, an unnumbered copy of only 1026 sets, with 12 frontispiece line cuts of pen-and-ink drawings by Rockwell Kent, very handsomely bound. Kent's art reflects a somewhat ""English"" style (Hogarth, Blake, Constable, the Pre-Raphaelites), and the British wood-engravers were his artistic antecedents. This copy is accompanied by the scarce portfolio of Kent's 12 prints, individually matted and signed by him (the print for Volume IV is unsigned). Original prospectus laid in portfolio. Very light toning to text, somewhat heavier in places, vivid illustrations, internally clean. * From an edition limited to 800 copies, this number 80. Hemard presents the official text of the sections of the French Civil Code concerning family law with witty, and often mildly erotic, color pochoir illustrations. This book was produced in three editions, each with different limitations and features. The present edition, which is the largest, has an original sketch of two text illustrations by the artist and a set of 65 plates reproducing all of the images in the book. Hemard, a prolific artist, illustrator, designer and author, is best-known for his humorously illustrated editions of serious non-fiction books. Sir Frederick Pollock [1845-1937] was one of the greatest British judges and legal scholars of his day. His treatises on contracts, jurisprudence the common law and other subjects did much to clarify and systematize English law. Several of these were standard texts that went through several editions. He is also remembered for his collaboration with F.W. Maitland on The History of English Law Before the Time of Edward I and his correspondence with Oliver Wendell Holmes, which was published posthumously as The Holmes-Pollock Letters.
