[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        DOYLE'S ROCK AND OTHER STORIES

Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1925.. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-7 [8] 9-288, original medium blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in orange, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition. "The author's first collection of short stories, many of which examine the theme of crossed signals between male and female characters. One of these (the longest story), 'She'll Never Marry,' pursues the theme into the territory of lesbianism, a notably early example, preceding THE WELL OF LONELINESS by three years, and unusual also for its presentation of Una and Evelyn as a happy, satisfied couple who pull the wool over the eyes of clueless males. Of the other thirteen stories, five have supernatural content. 'The Farm' follows a young boy into an isolated farm house where an old blind woman can sense much about his visual appearance. She envies his vitality and, as he is leaving, begs him for his *anima vitae.* He fails to understand this veiled reference but his girlfriend explains that she may have been asking him to breathe into her some of his vitality (thus losing it himself, making the old woman a kind of vampire?) 'The Buckross Ring' is an excellent supernatural tale with an ecclesiastical setting. 'Tea at Maggie Reynold's' presents another cryptical old woman presenting veiled truths to a confused young man. His surname, she explains, marks him as a descendant of a man who had tricked a mermaid into marriage. After listening to this folk tale, he walks away and begins thinking of all the violent water-related deaths of his relatives. 'The Place of Meeting' presents in play form the reconciliation in an afterlife of an ascetic monk and unrepentant heathen. 'Mr. Tookey' explores faith-healing, and throws in a ghost for good measure. All in all, a not inconsiderable collection. " - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler (1978), p. 188. NCBEL IV 744. Spine just a bit darkened, endpapers just a bit darkened, a near fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket with shallow chipping at upper spine end and upper edge of rear panel, shelf wear at edges, several creases to front panel, and several internal tape mends. (#149811)

        THE BASELESS FABRIC

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1925.. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-245 [246-248: blank] [note: first and last leaves are blanks] + 8-page undated publisher's catalogue inserted at rear, original dark green cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, Heinemann windmill device stamped in blind on rear panel. First edition. The author's only collection of short fiction. Eleven strange stories: madness ("Grey Sand and White Sand"), murder ("The Pledge"), horror, paranormal abilities ("Young Magic"), ghosts ("As Much More Land"), etc. Most of the stories are dark and/or morbid. Simpson, raised in Australia, moved to England right before the outbreak of WWI and served in the WRNS. She was a Renaissance woman, with impressive musical and linguistic abilities in addition to her writing, which addressed multiple subjects and genres. She became a friend and collaborator of another successful Georgian author with an interest in the fantastic, Clemence Dane. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day or Reginald (1979; 1992). Not in Hubin (1994). Neat owner's signature dated 1931 on front free endpaper. Some light foxing to page edges, but a bright, fine copy in a very good 3/6 reprint jacket advertising Heinemann's "new titles for 1928" on the front flap. A very scarce book. (#152326)

        The Knave of Hearts

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1925 - First Edition. Large 4to. 46 pp. 14 color plates and 9 in-text color vignettes by Maxfield Parrish (including frontispiece with tissue guard). Black cloth with color plate affixed to front cover; color illustrated endpapers by Parrish. From the estate of Agnes Marie Fraser Gump, former wife of Robert Gump who was grandson of the founder of Gumps in San Francisco, with her signature beneath "This is the Book Of" color plate. Minor wear to extremities; light rubbing & scratches to front cover illustration; small white mark to spine; front hinge cracked at half-title page but holding solid; a very good copy. Maxfield Parrish (1870 - 1966) was an American painter and illustrator active in the first half of the 20th century. He is known for his distinctive saturated hues, vibrant colors and idealized neo-classical imagery as demonstrated in this title. The Knave of Hearts was the last of Parrish's books for children and includes some of his most famous and beautiful paintings. The author was married to Max Perkins, perhaps the most famous literary editor of the 20th century. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Great Gatsby + FIRST EDITION LIBRARY Information Card *RARE*

The First Edition Library's 1953 publication of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. The Information card includes details about the book and it's dust jacket:Dustjacket:"Fitzgerald's editor at Scribner's, the legendary Max Perkins, commissioned the jacket art seven months before Fitzgerald finished writing. The author was so taken with the image of the eyes that months after he had first seen it in Perkins' office in New York, he wrote to his editor from Paris saying, "or Christ's sake don't give anyone that jacket, I've written it into the book." It appears as the eyes Dr. T.J. Eckleburg on the fantastic and desolate billboard alongside the railroad track between West Egg and New York. The original painting by artist Francis Cugat hung for many years in the library of the Princeton Club of New York and is now part of the Scribner archive at the Princeton University Library."Target Copy: "The basis for the reproduction of the text is a privately owned first edition; the basis for the dust jacket is Fitzgerald's own copy which he preserved in a scrapbook now kept at Firestone Library, Princeton University."Issue Points: "The first edition of The Great Gatsby is identified by two unique issue points. The first printing of the dust jacket contained a typographical error: the first letter of Jay Gatsby's name on the back panel of the jacket was printed with a lowercase "j". Rather than reprint the entire run Scribners overprinted an uppercase :"J". Both are visible."The second occurs on page 205 of the text. Mr. Meyer Wolfsheim's secretary Stella in scolding the narrator, Nick Carraway, tells him "We're getting sick in tired of it." In all subsequent printings the written version of Stella's colloquialism is printed as "sickantired"."The book and its audience: "Fitzgerald's ambition for Gatsby was high. At its inception he wrote to Perkins, "I want to write something new, something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." That he succeeded is today universally acknowledged by critics and readers who consistently hail the book as the first (and arguable the greatest) modern American novel. To Fitzgerald's bitter disappointment the book was a commercial failure. It was too new, too mature, too close to home for the Jazz Age audience which had made Fitzgerald's earlier and frothier This Side of Paradise a major bestseller. At the time of his death in 1940 The Great Gatsby was out of print. It was not until the 1950's when popular interest in Fitzgerald was revived by the publication of Arthur Mizener's widely read biography of the author (The Far Side of Paradise) that readers began to find the additional depth in the book and to feel that Jay Gatsby, as the noted critic Lionel Trilling once suggested, "comes inevitable to stand for America itself." "50 c is written in small letters in ink on the back of the cover, and the dustjacket has some edge wear and a small waterspot visible on the cover. A small brown spot also appears on the page edges of the book, but overall this book is in AMAZING shape for a 50+ year copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald's most popular book. This is a very rare edition from the First Edition Library, Thanks for looking

"Here is a novel, glamorous, ironical, compassionate--a marvellous fusion into unity of the curious incongruities of the life of the period. It is the story of Jay Gatsby who came so mysteriously to West Egg, of his sumptuous entertainments, and of his love for Daisy Buchanan, a story that ranges from pure lyrical beauty to sheer brutal realism, and is infused with a sense of the strangeness of human circumstance in a heedless universe. It is a magical, living book, blended of irony, romance, and mysticism." First Edition, first printing with all first issue points. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        "Mermaid" Subject.

No date [1925]. Original watercolor with pen and ink on card, signed, 15 x 11 inches. Label on verso of "A. E. Johnson, Artists' Agent" numbered 1669 and identifying title and artist. Very good. On a beach, a rotund merman with a ginger beard and necklace of shells examines the discarded clothes of a British Tommy while a pretty mermaid peers over his shoulder; paddling in the sea some distance away, the Tommy himself looks over in astonishment. With the hand lettered caption, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in our philosophy." The painting was made in May or June of 1925 for a publication unknown; a fine example of Heath Robinson's weird and wonderful imagination.
