Scrapbook and Photo Album of a Louisiana Girl in High School and College (1925-1928)

      - Scrapbook and photo album. Oblong quarto. String-tied dark blue fabrikoid boards with embossed "A Bouquet of Memories" in gilt. A few scraps missing or detached, some leaves chipped or detached, and many more laid in. A densely filled album with 39 leaves with mounted folded programs, brochures, letters, photos (some trimmed into shapes), and handwritten notes. Over 325 items total. The memory book of a girl upon her graduation from Selma High School in Selma, Louisiana in 1925, and documenting her social life at Louisiana College in Pineville between 1925-1928 (a few items predate 1925, and a similar handful are from later, but the vast majority are from that period). The photographs portray a group of energetic young women in typical 1920s bobbed hair swimming, clowning around, riding in cars, and on outings with young gentlemen. The scraps included programs and announcements for graduation exercises, greeting cards, product labels, broadsides and brochures for musical performances, college sporting events, movies, and theatre programs, a few of the broadsides were printed by the Standard Printing Company, another by the Wall Printing Company, both of Alexandria, Louisiana. Includes the printed pamphlet *MEOWS Wildcat Yells, Songs, Suggestions. Louisiana College. Session 1926-1927*. There are also handwritten accounts of parties (Halloween Party, Radio Party, "The Tacky Party," and several pages of autographs and inscriptions. The compiler, Lura Mae Gammill (c.1909-1986), known as "Macye" graduated as valedictorian from Selma High School in 1925 and received a scholarship to Louisiana College, a Baptist affiliated co-ed school in Pineville. She was a theater- and movie-goer, sang and played the piano and ukulele, attended sporting events and led an active social life. The few later pieces of ephemera indicate that she married E.W. Sehon, and lived in Tullos and Delhi, Louisiana. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Album of Film Stills [Cover Title]: Bulldog Drummond's "Third Round" by Sapper

London: Astra, National Productions, (1925). London: Astra, National Productions. (1925). Oblong quarto. String tied black cloth titled in gilt on front board. Bound in are 35 double-weight gelatin silver stills from the film, hole punched in the wide lefthand margin. Soiling on the verso of a couple of images, tiny nick in the margin of one, modest wear on the boards, a couple of the holes are pulled through, overall very good; the images are slightly curled, else otherwise fine. Issued by the production company, likely for a participant in the film, for the 1925 English silent film featuring a popular and intrepid English detective hero (there have been approximately 30 films featuring the detective over several decades). This film, directed by Sidney Morgan and featuring Jack Buchanan as Drummond, apparently revolves around boxing and shady scientists - with several images of both, including much scientific apparatus. According to one summary from the British Film Institute catalog: "Merchants hire a foreign criminal to kidnap a scientist for the secret of manufacturing diamonds." Vivid images, certainly rare, and possibly unique. Contemporary collections of images from any silent film are very uncommon. .

Photo Album]: Fordham University, Sports, and World War I

Massachusetts 1925 - Quarto. Measuring 9" x 12.5". Black cloth with "scrapbook" stamped in white on the front board. Contains 352 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 6.5" x 8.5", with captions. Good only album with detached pages, tears on the spine, and large chips with near fine photographs.A scrapbook compiled by John Joseph Cantwell (referred to as "Jack" throughout) between 1911 and 1925. The scrapbook details his high school and college years, his time serving in World War I, and the numerous sports he played. Jack spent his freshman year at Springfield College in Massachusetts playing baseball and football, and in 1912 he was involved with the Intercollegiate Championships held at Harvard Stadium. There are action shots of runners and pole vaulting as well as the crowd in the stands. By 1915 he had enrolled at Fordham University and throughout are photos of football games, boxing matches, and baseball games, as well as Jack and his friends goofing off during their leisure time. After graduating from Fordham in 1917, Jack joined the American Expeditionary Forces and traveled to France to fight in World War I and was stationed in Verdun. Included in his scrapbook are 25 photos from this time which began with the French Army and later the United States Hospital Corps. These photos show the French countryside and people as well as military personal such as soldiers and American Red Cross nurses. Photos include a French plane, a group of soldiers on post, American grave sites in France, the ruins of Verdun, and men on a hill with their stomachs to the ground awaiting the enemy. Jack enjoyed his time in France when he had the chance and befriended a young woman who is referred to as "the Parisian Baby."He returned home in 1919 and documented a vacation at Lake Boone in North Carolina and photos show him with friends boating, swimming, and blowing off steam after his time overseas. By 1920 he became a counselor at Gardner Playgrounds where he taught children volleyball and supervised activities. A photo captioned "my bunch" shows Jack's group of children posed on playground equipment. In 1923 he worked at the Sterling Health Camp which was a camp for sick children and is pictured with nurses, doctors, and patients on the grounds of the camp. The staff seemed to enjoy each other's company and are photographed laughing and smiling together and with the children. One photo shows Jack surrounded by women of the camp which reads "talk about your harem" and another of a group of women reads "three good scouts."Jack married Margaret Ellen Riordan in Worcester, Massachusetts, their wedding taking place in January of 1925 and an invitation is laid in. The final pages detail vacations and family visits through the rest of that year, including trips to Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire in the sun and water, fishing, hiking, and having a good time goofing off. Jack would go on to coach at Classical High School in Massachusetts with a newspaper clipping tipped in from 1952 that discusses his retirement from the school where he coached for 32 years. An extensive scrapbook of a young man's formative years featuring college sports and serving his country in World War I before becoming a beloved high school coach.         PAPERS OF DEVOTION OF JAMES II: BEING A REPRODUCTION OF THE MS. IN THE HANDWRITING OF JAMES THE SECOND NOW IN THE POSSESSION OF MR. B. R. TOWNLEY BALFOUR

Oxford: Printed [at the Oxford University Press by Frederick Hall] for Presentation to the Members of the Roxburghe Club, 1925. Apparently the FIRST EDITION y. The ultra-exclusive Roxburghe Club takes its name from the celebrated bibliophile John Ker, third duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804), who put together an unprecedented collection of some 10,000 items, the majority being early books, especially works printed by Caxton. In 1812, during the evening of the day those books were dispersed at auction, the most distinguished of the patrician bibliophiles in attendance at the sale dined together in St. Albans Street. No doubt stirred to a special fervor as a result of the auction (Valdarfer's 1471 edition of Boccaccio, for which Roxburghe paid £100, had sold for the astronomical sum of £2,260), the 18 assembled collectors founded the Roxburghe Club, which ever after has counted among its membership a small elite of bibliophiles. Written during the period of James' exile after his conversion to Roman Catholicism, the present volume contains loosely connected papers by the king giving his thoughts on religion, the text taken from an original manuscript and printed here for the first time. Although the piety he expresses did not always govern his personal behavior, the king is obviously sincere in his reflections, and although he had the reputation for being endowed with less than a superfluity of intellectual prowess, the writing here shows that he had thought deeply about his life and faith. As some indication of the limitation of the press run here, the membership roll at the front of this work lists 40 members of the Roxburghe Club, with the Earl of Derby, who prepared this work for the group, listed 11th. There could not be a copy anywhere in finer condition than this one.. 292 x 229 mm. (11 1/2 x 9"). xxx pp., [1] leaf, 173, [5] pp.Introduction by Godfrey Davies. Apparently the FIRST EDITION. Original Roxburghe binding of maroon half morocco over red textured cloth boards, flat spine with titling in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. One facsimile manuscript plate. Presentation card reading "With the Earl of Derby's compliments" laid in at front. Title page, dedication, and membership list printed in red and black. This copy originally prepared for Sydney Richardson Christie-Miller (his name printed in red in the Roxburghe list as a way of indicating this). Endpapers with a hint of foxing, but A VIRTUALLY PRISTINE COPY.The ultra-exclusive Roxburghe Club takes its name from the celebrated bibliophile John Ker, third duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804), who put together an unprecedented collection of some 10,000 items, the majority being early books, especially works printed by Caxton. There could not be a copy anywhere in finer condition than this one.

De Civitate Dei Contra Paganos, Libri XXII [The City of God, or The City of God Against the Pagans]

[Bremer Press], [Munich] 1925 - No. 333 of 385 copies, Folio - over 12 - 15" tall, 690 p. Saint Augustine of Hippo is arguably the most influential Christian theologian in the entire two thousand years of Church history; his best known works are his "Confessions" and this, The City of God, which serves as a cornerstone of Western thought. In it Augustine discusses many of the profound questions of theology, such as the suffering of the righteous, the existence of evil, the conflict between free will and divine omniscience, and the doctrine of original sin (N.B., from Wiki). This copy, published by the Bremer Press and printed entirely in Latin (with occasional Greek), was the third book of their "Folio Series", the first two being Dante's Divine Comedy in 1921 and Homer's Iliad in 1923. A starkly handsome production with intial capital letters by Anna Simons; in "A Century for the Century" the editors describe this work as "monumental" and go on to say "the powerful title page is among the most beautiful produced by the press; Wiegand's small, clear roman type, set very tightly, is used here with great impact, matching the power of Saint Augustine's words. The specifics of type, inking, presswork, and paper are close to perfection." ***DESCRIPTION: Binding of light blue paper over boards, white paper spine label with black lettering, plain endpapers, all text in Latin, 20-page Critical Appendix (Adnotatio Critica) beginning at page 609, followed by a 25-page Index (Index Locorum); folio size (approximately 14" tall), 690 pages, special roman and greek types on Zanders handmade paper, limited edition of 385 copies, this no. 333. Housed in a slipcase covered with the same blue paper, no lettering or decorations. ***CONDITION: Near fine, with clean binding, a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly square corners without rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some sunning to the spine, some very light abrasions (apparently from the slipcase), and one cracked gutter (pgs. viii and viiii), else fine. The matching slipcase is also near fine, complete, strong and sturdy, with minimal sunning around the opening and extremely light wear to the paper covering on the bottom. ***CITATIONS: Ransom, Bremer Press, no. 30; A Century for the Century, no. 14. ***POSTAGE: Due to size and weight, international customers please note that additional shipping will apply; we are happy to ship at cost, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Geneva - Leipzig - Prague [manuscript title on spine].

      - [Locarno, Geneva, and other places, 1925-33]. Square 4to. Patterned cloth, 34 original photos (various formats measuring 54 x 60 up to 132 x 82 mm), all neatly mounted on one side of stiff carton leaves with tissue guards, captioned by hand; apart from light fading of spine in very glood and clean condition. This unique and privately produced photo album with unpublished photos of diplomatic negotiations and politicians was compiled, probably by a Geneva doctor, on 'diplomatic duty', with a keen eye for the occasion and a camera good enough to take unofficial snapshots. The album opens with photos showing the Czechoslovak Minister of Foreign Affairs (and later President of the Republic) Edvard Bene?, his wife and members of his delegation on Isola Bella near Locarno in 1925. Others show the German conterpart, Gustav Stresemann, relaxing in a cafe, with the German Chancellor Dr Luther and other delegates, Austen Chamberlain and Aristide Briand, the Yugoslav Foreign Secretary Nin?i? Another group of photos, including certainly surreptitiously taken snapshots show scenes of negotiations and the signing of the Kellogg-Briand Pact (snapshots of Kellogg signing, Bene? signing, Streseman and Briand listening to Kellogg speaking, Chamberlain and Briand). One impressive portrait shows the Hungarian politician Albert Apponyi de Nagyappony. Other photos date from the last days of the Weimar Republic, a portrait of the German Chancellor (1930-1932) Brüning (whose constitutional wranglings enabled Hitler's rise to power), Hitler himself, laying the foundation stone of the Wagner Memorial in Leipzig in 1934, and another one of the dictator (a rather blurred picture of him on the move with a crowd of dignitaries). The last photo of this album shows Masaryk in Prague in 1934. The photographer had remarkable access to a wide spectrum of diplomats and politicians. The album seems to be constructed to show the failure of inter-war peace initiatives with suited men against the và lkisch ideology and the political theatre of Hitler's martial rallies in military uniform.         ON THE DIAMOND TRAIL IN BRITISH GUIANA.

London: Methuen & Co., []. 1925 - xi,[1],243pp. plus twenty-three illustrations on sixteen plates, and a map. Half title. Portrait. Vellum, gilt morocco label, a.e.g. A few light fox marks. Near fine. A presentation copy, inscribed by the author on a front fly leaf in the year of publication, "Maurice from Gwen." "Maurice" likely was the English actor Maurice Colborne. A very handsome copy of this interesting narrative of diamond hunting in the wilds of British Guiana. Richardson, an Englishwoman, spent six months in the jungles of the region, living among the Mazaruni Indians of the region, digging for diamonds, and fending off snakes, alligators, electric eels, fever, and hunger. She writes that in her account she "carefully avoided sacrificing truth to sensationalism," and she provides interesting and accurate information about the Indians of the region, as well as details of jungle life. Among the illustrations are pictures of the various camps and Indian assistants to the party.

Lelio a Pro delfina. / Lelio a Pro delfína. [Lelio. For the Dolphin.]

Aventinum, Praha (Prague) 1925 - First edition. Limited, numbered copy (1/1,000). Title page printed in black and orange. In publisher's black wrapper, printed white and orange. 87, (9) p. First edition of this collection of short stories by ?apek. Lelio was ?apek's debut book, published first in 1917, Pro delfína appeared in 1923. Two years later this joint edition of the two collections of short stories was also published in 1,000 numbered copies. Josef ?apek (Czech cubist painter, writer, and poet; 1887-1945) is credited as the coiner of the word "robot". Although some sources claim that the word "robot" first appeared in the short story "Opilec" of the volume "Lelio", but actually it was "automat". "Robot" appeared first in Josef's brother's 1920 play, "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots), as the name for artificial workers. Karel had difficulties to name these humanoid machines and asked Josef to find something instead of the academically sounding "Labori". Josef coined the word "Robot" deriving it from the Czech "robota", forced labor. Wrappers artistically restored. Inside clear and firm. Overall in fine condition. In publisher's black wrapper, printed white and orange First edition. Limited, numbered copy (1/1,000). Title page printed in black and orange. [Attributes: First Edition]
