Hansel and Gretel and Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1925. Signed limited first edition. Quarto, original three quarters orange cloth over marbled boards, patterned endpapers. Number 470 of 600 copies signed by Kay Nielsen. Illustrated by Kay Nielsen with 12 mounted color plates, and black and white illustrations. In very good condition. Nielsen's place in history has become universally acknowledged and his name is invariably invoked as one of the deities of the golden age of illustration, alongside such immortals as Arthur Rackham, Walter Crane and Edmund Dulac... [Hansel and Gretel] would prove to be his last great work. The pictures show a still-evolving artist; they are slightly less formal, demonstrating perhaps a folk-art influence, with greater use of color" (Silvey, 488).

PAPERS OF DEVOTION OF JAMES II: BEING A REPRODUCTION OF THE MS. IN THE HANDWRITING OF JAMES THE SECOND NOW IN THE POSSESSION OF MR. B. R. TOWNLEY BALFOUR

Oxford: Printed [at the Oxford University Press by Frederick Hall] for Presentation to the Members of the Roxburghe Club, 1925. Apparently the FIRST EDITION y. The ultra-exclusive Roxburghe Club takes its name from the celebrated bibliophile John Ker, third duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804), who put together an unprecedented collection of some 10,000 items, the majority being early books, especially works printed by Caxton. In 1812, during the evening of the day those books were dispersed at auction, the most distinguished of the patrician bibliophiles in attendance at the sale dined together in St. Albans Street. No doubt stirred to a special fervor as a result of the auction (Valdarfer's 1471 edition of Boccaccio, for which Roxburghe paid £100, had sold for the astronomical sum of £2,260), the 18 assembled collectors founded the Roxburghe Club, which ever after has counted among its membership a small elite of bibliophiles. Written during the period of James' exile after his conversion to Roman Catholicism, the present volume contains loosely connected papers by the king giving his thoughts on religion, the text taken from an original manuscript and printed here for the first time. Although the piety he expresses did not always govern his personal behavior, the king is obviously sincere in his reflections, and although he had the reputation for being endowed with less than a superfluity of intellectual prowess, the writing here shows that he had thought deeply about his life and faith. As some indication of the limitation of the press run here, the membership roll at the front of this work lists 40 members of the Roxburghe Club, with the Earl of Derby, who prepared this work for the group, listed 11th. There could not be a copy anywhere in finer condition than this one.. 292 x 229 mm. (11 1/2 x 9"). xxx pp., [1] leaf, 173, [5] pp.Introduction by Godfrey Davies. Apparently the FIRST EDITION. Original Roxburghe binding of maroon half morocco over red textured cloth boards, flat spine with titling in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. One facsimile manuscript plate. Presentation card reading "With the Earl of Derby's compliments" laid in at front. Title page, dedication, and membership list printed in red and black. This copy originally prepared for Sydney Richardson Christie-Miller (his name printed in red in the Roxburghe list as a way of indicating this). Endpapers with a hint of foxing, but A VIRTUALLY PRISTINE COPY. The ultra-exclusive Roxburghe Club takes its name from the celebrated bibliophile John Ker, third duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804), who put together an unprecedented collection of some 10,000 items, the majority being early books, especially works printed by Caxton. Jongejan, De humor-”cultus” der Romantiek in Nederland, Zutphen 1933, p.435-440"."Vijf anonieme publicaties in één band. De ‘Physiologie van Den Haag' staat op naam van dr. W.J.A. H.P. Timmers Verhoeven of W.F.G.L.

Photo Album]: Hunting and Fishing in New England and Canada 1925-1930

      - Oblong octavo. Measuring 11.75" x 7.25". String-tied flexible cloth with "Photographs" stamped on the top board. Modest edgewear on the boards, near fine. Contains 272 black and white gelatin silver photographs. Images are various sizes between 1.75" x 2.75" and 3.25" x 4.75", mostly mounted between three and six to a page; one addition 6" x 9" photo on the last page is of a mounted buck . One or two have fallen out or are otherwise lacking, but clearly the album hasn't been pillaged. A few are faded, most are near fine or better. The vast majority are captioned. A beautifully composed and photographed album of hunting and fishing trips in Canada (Quebec, Ontario), and many locations in New England, and the Adirondacks between 1925 and 1930, with one trip to Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia. Most of the trips seemed to be month or even season-long family trips and are dominated by the proud display of catches of fish and game. Locations are clearly identified, including Lake Chaplain and Bingham Fall, Vermont; Vanderwhacker Mountain and Lake Placid, New York; Lac La Croix and Lac Rognon in Canada; to name a few. While there are many typical camping scenes, the majority are of people in the field, with catches of minks, rabbits, bucks, and various fish proudly displayed by both male and female sporting folk. An unusually nice, well-captioned and finely realized subject specific album.

"The 'discursive' series and the 'figurative' series that make up Simulacre exist independently of each other, according to Leiris. Nonetheless, it is difficult to believe in a simple juxtaposition of poems and lithographs. The poet who wrote several texts in [Masson's] studio at rue Blonet certainly found inspiration in certain canvases. Even if the lithographs do not directly illustrate the poems, they set up a dialogue with them" (Renée Rise Hubert, Surrealism and the Book, Berkeley, 1988, p. 28).         Large photogravure portrait in sepia.

      - Chicago, Skandinaven, [c. 1925]. Printed on stiff, thick paper, measuring 56 x 36 cm; well-preserved. This print must have been issued in connection with the end of the three-year expedition in the ship Maud, which had been frozen in the Arctic Sea of the Northeast passage, and finally managed to break free and sail to Seattle in 1921. 'In 1918, with a newly-built polar ship, the Maud, Roald Amundsen started on a new expedition which was to drift over the Arctic Ocean and maybe over the North Pole. With him were nine men, including scientific leader H.U. Sverdrup. It took two years for them to sail through the ice-filled Northeast Passage, and one more year stuck in the ice north of the Bering Strait before Amundsen gave up and tried instead to fly over the Arctic Ocean. Meanwhile the Maud continued with a reduced crew until 1925 without managing to get into the east-west current. The main result of the Maud expedition was the important scientific data which Sverdrup collected and analysed during the entire expedition' (Fram Museum, online). The hull of the ship is currently being transported back from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, where she had been frozen in and sank in 1930.

        Tabako Nomi no Hamigaki Sumoka].

      - n.p. [c1930]. Colour poster 42x31cm. A hint of browning, a nice copy. Not quite inexplicable but it would take a while to work out an explanation of this shop poster for Smoca Toothpowder. Samurai mask - sure, but why? Links to racist posters by manufacturers of whiteners of all kinds round the world? Indeed. But put it all together and . you make sense of it. Smoca's success - they are still going - was through clever advertising. From the start, in 1925, the company's founder, advertising man Kataoka Toshiro, hired the best artists and cartoonists. Book compilations of Smoca's newspaper advertising made regular appearances from the late twenties on.

Album of Film Stills [Cover Title]: Bulldog Drummond's "Third Round" by Sapper

Astra, National Productions, London 1925 - Oblong quarto. String tied black cloth titled in gilt on front board. Bound in are 35 double-weight gelatin silver stills from the film, hole punched in the wide lefthand margin. Soiling on the verso of a couple of images, tiny nick in the margin of one, modest wear on the boards, a couple of the holes are pulled through, overall very good; the images are slightly curled, else otherwise fine. Issued by the production company, likely for a participant in the film, for the 1925 English silent film featuring a popular and intrepid English detective hero (there have been approximately 30 films featuring the detective over several decades). This film, directed by Sidney Morgan and featuring Jack Buchanan as Drummond, apparently revolves around boxing and shady scientists - with several images of both, including much scientific apparatus. According to one summary from the British Film Institute catalog: "Merchants hire a foreign criminal to kidnap a scientist for the secret of manufacturing diamonds." Vivid images, certainly rare, and possibly unique. Contemporary collections of images from any silent film are very uncommon.

        When We Were Very Young

London: Methuen & Co,, July 1925. With decorations by E. H. Shephard. Octavo. Publisher's deluxe blue morocco, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and boards gilt, pictorial endpapers, all edges gilt. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Spine rolled and sunned but gilt still bright, rear board sunned along joint, endpapers lightly foxed. An excellent copy. Tenth impression, second deluxe edition. When We Were Very Young was first published on 6 November 1924. Copies of the seventh and tenth impressions were later issued in deluxe bindings, this copy being a tenth impression. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286).

        Autograph manuscript (fragment).

      N. p., [c. 1925]. - Large 8vo. 12 pp (numbered 29 to 40). A large portion of her essay "Composition as Explanation", published in 1925. "And so there was the natural phenomena that was war, which had been, before war came, several generations behind the contemporary composition, because it became war and so completely needed to be contemporary became completely contemporary and so created the completed recognition of the contemporary composition. Every one but one may say every one became consciously became aware of the existence of the authenticity of the modern composition. This then the contemporary recognition, because of the academic thing known as war having been forced to become contemporary made every one not only contemporary in act not only contemporary in thought but contemporary in self-consciousness made every one contemporary with the modern composition. And so the art creation of the contemporary composition which would have been outlawed normally outlawed several generations more behind even than war, war having been brought so to speak up to date art so to speak was allowed not completely to be up to date, but nearly up to date, in other words we who created the expression of the modem composition were to be recognized before we were dead some of us even quite a long time before we were dead. And so war may be said to have advanced a general recognition of the expression of the contemporary composition by almost thirty years". - In her essay, Stein connects World War I’s influence on the evolution of warfare (and the shifting consciousness of the citizens and soldiers of those nations involved) to the role of Modernism in the evolution of the arts. - Slightly browned; in pencil.

        Simulacre. Poèmes et lithographies

Paris: Editions de la Galerie Simon [D. H. Kahnweiler], 1925. 4to (250 x 200 mm). 7 lithographs by Masson, including that for the cover. Original printed wrappers; original glassine. Some wear and a few short tears to glassine, remnants of owner's label on front free endpaper. LEIRIS'S FIRST BOOK, AND THE SECOND BOOK ILLUSTRATED BY MASSON. LIMITED EDITION, number 58 of 90 copies on vérge d'Arches from a total edition of 112 copies signed by Leiris and Masson, numbered on the justification leaf and glassine. 28). Artist & the Book 191; Monod 7071; Saphire 5-11. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow.

Album of Film Stills [Cover Title]: Bulldog Drummond's "Third Round" by Sapper

London: Astra, National Productions. (1925). Oblong quarto. Contemporary collections of images from any silent film are very uncommon. .
