London: Stanley Paul & Co., 1925. Early English edition issued the same year as the first. With 12 color plates by "Saida," a.k.a. H. Willebeek Le Mair. Large 4to, original light blue cloth with black lettering on the spine an upper cover, with a color pictorial pastedown on the upper cover, in the SCARCE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET. 105 pp. An unusually bright, crisp and clean copy with no fading and exceptionally little evidence of use or wear. The scarce dust jacket in excellent condition with only the most minor rubbing to the top edge of the spine. SCARCE IN THE DUSTJACKET AND AN UUSUALLY NICE COPY. A delightful collection of twelve short stories and fairy tales written for children by Milne and illustrated by Le Mair. The full page colourful illustrations include idyllic scenes of rosy faced children playing at the beach, being lovingly embraced by their mothers, merrily picking flowers on hillsides, and generally enjoying the innocent pleasures of childhood. Milne was commissioned to write stories to accompany these beautiful and joyful visual images. He produced some of the most captivating short pieces of his career in these light, amusing, slightly moral tales, perfectly garnished with magic and imagination. This is a wonderful read-aloud book for the very young, sure to bring a smile and a touch of bliss. This is a spacious book, its illustrations containing an elegant, art nouveau sensibility. Beautiful mothers wear graceful robes and tend to the gentle needs of their children with utter composure. The children are cherubic, filled with zest and laughter, busy making sand castles or industriously assisting mommy as she folds the linens and puts them away. Each watercolor is simple in its lines and gestures and utterly elegant and harmonious in its integration of elements. The decorated borders surrounding each picture add to its formal charm.

The History of the First Seven Battalions The Royal Irish Rifles (Now the The Royal Ulster Rifles) in the Great War. Volume II

Aldershot: Gale & Polden Ltd., Printed for the Regimental Committee,, 1925. [For Private Circulation only.] Quarto (274 × 214 mm) Dark green half morocco on black morocco boards, black morocco labels to the spine, shallow bands with foliate roll, gilt rules to spine and corner edges, regimental crest to with battle honours to the upper board, all edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers. Portrait frontispiece and two other plates, 19 folding maps, some coloured. Sunned to brown on the spine, a little rubbed, but remains highly attractive, contents complete, clean, and sound. First edition. This is an uncommon history, particularly so in the de luxe binding as here. Styled Volume II, it is a discrete history of these units in the War, and complete in itself, being written "with the object of filling the gap ... in the historical record of the Regiment" between Laurie's history ending in 1912, "and the story of the deeds of the 36th (Ulster) Division" (Foreword). Falls was also the author of the latter volume, and in his entry on it in War Books remarks "The compiler of this list is unfortunately precluded, not by modesty but by a sense of decency, from enlarging upon the merits of this work. He can only say of it that he would not have included it had he not deemed it worthy of inclusion". In his ODNB life of Falls, Michael Howard says what Falls could not say of himself commending his works as "notable for their solid knowledge, their good sense, and the distinction of their prose". The battalions commemorated here served on the Western Front from Mons and Le Cateau onwards - with much material on the Somme and Messines - Gallipoli, Macedonia, and Palestine. Slightly obtrusive ownership inscription of Roland Noel Pearson Cole to the first blank, Cole served with the regiment in the 20s before transferring to the Indian Army.

Vol. 7 of 29 Atlases of Insurance Maps for Queens. Hollis & Jamaica Estates

Sanborn Map Company, New York 1925 - This volume includes part of South Jamaica, the Long Island Railroad split of the Main Line and the Montauk Line, and a Queens neighborhood reference inset. The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American Cities. The collection includes some fifty thousand editions of fire insurance maps comprising an estimated seven hundred thousand individual sheets. The Library of Congress holdings represent the largest extant collection of maps produced by the Sanborn Map Company. The majority of the maps were acquired by the Library through copyright deposit, but the collection was substantially enriched in 1967 when the Bureau of the Census transferred to the Library of Congress a complete set. The 1,899 loose-leaf binders were particularly noteworthy because they included later editions than those previously acquired by the Library. The Bureau of the Census set of maps had been regularly updated by printed, paste-on corrections supplied by the Sanborn Map Company, whereas the Library of Congress copies were retained in the form in which they were copyrighted. Atlas. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Massive elephant folio. Decorative calligraphic titles, indices, and key maps. Contains a set of 90 maps along with changes recorded on paste-on correction slips through 1974. Quarter leather binding with gilt title on front and spine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Sezione di Spilimbergo Scuola Corale

(Spilimbergo, Italy: Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro, c. 1930s). Quarto. (30)ff. scrapbook belonging to a member of the Spilimbergo Choral School, and containing eight hand-tinted photographs, a roster of members, mimeographed sheets with lyrics to songs and a guide to a folk dance, and hand-written sheet music. One photograph shows the entire group in folkloric attire. The other photographs show couples dancing; most demonstrate specific steps to the furlana, a courtship folk dance. The choral roster in the front of the book lists the name of each member, his or her choral part and occupation. The Spilimbergo Scuola Corale was part of the Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro (OND), which was formed by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in cooperation with fascist trade unions in 1925. The OND provided recreational and cultural activities for industrial workers and was intended to compete with Socialist cultural organizations. The OND’s activities were popular among workers, but it was never a successful tool for Fascist indoctrination; as such, the songs in this scrapbook appear to be more sentimental and folkloric than propagandistic. In slate blue paper wrappers, with the title calligraphed in black ink to front cover. The mimeographed pages bear the official stamp of the OND and the choral school. Repair to spine and some edgewear, else about fine.

Wahrscheinlichkeitstheoretischer Aufbau der Quantenmechanik; Thermodynamik quantenmechanischer Gesamtheiten.Berlin: Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen, 1927. First edition.

Rare offprint issues, with distinguished provenance, of these two major papers in which Von Neumann laid out his probability-theoretic construction of quantum mechanics and founded the field of quantum thermodynamics. <br/><br/> "That von Neumann has been 'par excellence' the mathematician of quantum mechanics is as obvious to every physicist now as it was a quarter of a century ago. Quantum mechanics was very fortunate indeed to attract, in the very first years after its discovery in 1925, the interest of a mathematical genius of von Neumann's stature. As a result, the mathematical framework of the theory was developed and the formal aspects of its entirely novel rules of interpretation were analyzed by one single man in two years time (1927-1929). Conversely, one could almost say in reciprocity, quantum mechanics introduced von Neumann into a field of mathematical investigation, operator theory, in which he achieved some of his most prominent successes.<br/><br/> "In the course of his formulation of quantum mechanics in terms of vectors and operators of Hilbert space von Neumann also gave in complete generality the basic statistical rule of interpretation of the theory. This rule concerns the result of the measurement of a given physical quantity on a system in a given quantum state and expresses its probability distribution by means of a simple and now completely familiar formula involving the vector representing the state and the spectral resolution of the operator which represents the physical quantity. This statistical rule, originally proposed by Born in 1926, was for von Neumann the starting point of a mathematical analysis of quantum mechanics in entirely probabilistic terms. The analysis, carried out in a paper of 1927 [citing the first offered paper], introduced the concept of statistical matrix for the description of an ensemble of systems which are not necessarily all in the same quantum state. The statistical matrix (now often called <i>&rho;</i>-matrix although von Neumann's notation was <i>U</i>) has become one of the major tools of quantum statistics and it is through this contribution that von Neumann's name became familiar to even the least mathematically minded physicists. <br/><br/> "In the same paper von Neumann also investigates a problem which is still now the subject of much discussion, viz., the theoretical description of the quantum-mechanical measuring process and of the noncausal elements which it involves. Mathematically speaking von Neumann's study of this delicate question is quite elegant. It provides a clear-cut formal framework for the numerous investigations which were needed to clarify physically the all-important implications of quantum phenomena for the nature of physical measurements, the most essential of which is Niels Bohr's concept of complementarity.<br/><br/> "The results of the paper just discussed were immediately used by the author to lay the foundation for quantum thermodynamics [citing the second offered paper]." (Léon Van Hove, <i>Von Neumann's Contributions to Quantum Theory</i>.)<br/><br/> <i>Provenance: </i> front wrappers with the signature of mathematician Aurel Friedrich Wintner (1903-1958) who did important work in probability theory and is considered one of the founders of probabilistic number theory.. Two offprints from the Nachrichten der Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen. Both 8vo (241 x 168 mm), in the original light green printed wrappers (some chipping and a few small tears to the extremeties), pp. [2:seperate title], [245] 246-272 [2:blank]; pp. [273] 274-291 [1:blank]. 3 Autograph letters to Francis Bickley on four Pages (September 1925?- April 1926)

Each letter written to Francis Lawrence Bickley, author of The Adventures of Harlequin which was one of early fine books he illustrated. Each written on his letterhead John Austen. The September letter is not dated by year but from internal evidence points to 1925 when his "Rogues in Porcelain" was issued by Chapman and Hall. Austen writes that he is glad he thinks well of the "Rogues" and I look forward to your criticism of it. [In a case of apparent censorship, he writes:] "A[rthur]. Waugh, publisher of Chapman and Hall, is [desolatest?] because forsooth I have included "The Dove" its evidently the first line he had read it, as he knew well that I was to use it and now he says its indecent and will probably stop sales. I suggest it only increases them. I will certainly tell him to include the Bookman in his list but probably has already done so." He goes on to note: "I enclose the proof of your story which I enjoyed muchly--wish I could decorate a volume of such. Certainly, I will do something with them and will post the drawings when complete, we may be lucky with them." If you have seen Harry Clarke since his visit here, you will have a graphic description of our little estate. Letter of Feb 14th (1928), he notes he is at work on illustrations for Byron&#39;s Don Juan for John Lane and also something for Geoffrey Bles, suggests a project for which he proposes to do decorations (though there will not be money in it), mentions his new Rolls Royce and offers to give Bickley a tour if he can trust Austen&#39;s "wild driving" In the letter of April 20 invited him to enjoy the country life which he and his wife already have come to love. John Austen is known in the U.S. for his many illustrations for George Macy&#39;s Limited Editions Club though his English illustrated books are far more scarce..

1925. Paperback. Very Good. [YANASE MASAMU] HOSOI Wakizo. KOJO. Tokyo, Kaizosha, Taisho 14 [1925]. 8vo., [2] 427pp, [8]. This work by Hosoi, FACTORY, carries on the reportage of his JOKO AISHI of the same year. No stranger to the world he described, Hosoi began work in textile factories at the age of 13, an orphan without family. This landmark of proletarian literature appeared the year he died of peritonitis at the age of 29. Ironically his common law widow, Takai Toshio, herself an important activist, would later be denied compensation from his royalties by Kaizosha because of her "lifestyle". She would later write an important memoir of their life together and the horrors of the factory system. Yanase Masamu was an important avant-garde artist of the time who began with the MAVO group and whose proletarian sympathies led him to illustrate not only this book but also JOKO AISHI and MUGEN NO KAGAMI, both important sociological and feminist works written by Wakizo. This is a first edition in very good condition (slight internal foxing), here with the very scarce paper jacket (slight edgewear and a chip from the head of the spine) replicating the Yamase cover illustration from the original wrappers. Very unusual thus.

Brentano's New York: Brentano&#39;s, 1925. Raphaelson, Samson. THE JAZZ SINGER. New York: Brentano&#39;s, 1925. FIRST EDITION. A bright, FINE copy in the rare original publisher&#39;s dust jacket which is VERY GOOD (slightly chipped at the top of the spine and the back panel, a little dust-soiled). A PRESENTATION COPY from the author to New York City&#39;s DRAMATISTS GUILD. A superb association: "For Dramatist&#39;s Guild/Samson Raphaelson/1977 (51 years later)." The Jazz Singer, filmed by Warner Brothers in 1927, was the first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue sequences; it brought about the rise of the "talkies" and the decline of the silent film era. Using the Vitaphone sound-on-disc system, star Al Jolson sang a half-dozen songs making this the first true musical film as we think of it today. But its not just a major milestone in film history, Samson Raphaelson&#39;s story is a powerful one; Jakie Rabinowitz who goes against the traditions of his orthodox Jewish family by singing popular songs in a beerhall, is castigated by his synagogue cantor father and driven from home. Fast forward, Jakie becomes Jack Robin, a brilliant but tormented jazz singer. This story of an entertainer&#39;s hopes and dreams for a career coming into conflict with his culture and his faith is a classic and serves as the prototype for an entire genre. The first edition of THE JAZZ SINGER is virtually never found in its original dustjacket. Signed copies are exceptionally difficult to find. This is the only inscribed copy currently known to us and its association to The Dramatist&#39;s Guild is especially appealing. Samson Raphaelson died in 1983 after having won the lifetime achievement award from the Writer&#39;s Guild of America for his screenwriting. Among Samson Raphaelson&#39;s dozens of screen credits are such films as THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1939), SUSPICION (1943, directed by Alfred Hitchcock), and HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1943). (His son is the director Bob Rafelson who wrote FIVE EASY PIECES starring Jack Nicholson.) THE JAZZ SINGER is one of the most indispensable cornerstones for a "Literature Into Film" collection and, as far as we know, this is THE best copy available. . Inscribed By Author. First Edition. Fine/Very Good.

Annette and Sylvie [Signed], Being Volume I of The Soul Enchanted [L&#39;Âme enchantée]

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1925. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. A Very Good + copy of Romain Rolland&#39;s "Annette and Sylvie", being the first installment of his larger work "L&#39;Âme enchantée" ["The Enchanted Soul"] originally published in French in seven volumes issued over an eleven-year period (1922 and 1933) SIGNED BY ROMAIN ROLLAND on the Limitation Page and here published by Henry Holt and Company in English translation for the first time. This is copy 13 of 515 copies issued on rag, laid paper and specially bound in brown paper boards with a white paper spine lettered and lined in gilt. [Holt also issued unsigned copies of this title in the same year.] Romain Rolland won the 1915 Nobel Prize in Literature "as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings". This is a Very Good + copy with some expected tanning to the spine and rather minor handling soil. Collectible copies of Rolland&#39;s works in English translation are quite uncommon, and copies of this Limited Edition title have become surprisingly scarce. Most copies that do turn up tend to have considerable wear and weak or split hinges. A Very Good + copy in nicer condition than usually seen (when seen at all), SIGNED BY ROMAIN ROLLAND.

        Im Irrgarten

Frankfurt A.M.: Bertele, Bilder, Buecher, (c. 1925). Quarto. (26)pp. First edition. Written and illustrated with thirteen fantastic, chromolithographed plates by Kleyer, who studied under the expressionist painter and printmaker Ludwig Meidner. Kleyer&#146;s text, which is a series of rhyming couplets printed on facing pages, concerns a family visit to a carnival, where they enter a funhouse maze. The majority of the illustrations are concerned with depicting the various distorted reflections the two little girls, their parents, and the family dog see while traversing the funhouse. These illustrations possess a distinctly surreal aesthetic reminiscent of the pioneering artwork of Winsor McCay for his Little Nemo in Slumberland. Bound in original cloth-backed illustrated boards, which show light soiling. Overall, a near fine copy of a scarce book.

        Bronze of an African figure

1925 - Bronze figure of a dancing African warrior, armed with shield and spear, unsigned and without obvious foundry information. Approximately 28" high by about 12" at the widest point, and basically two-dimensional, that is, about 1/2" at its deepest point. The dore bronze is finished on both sides, indicating that it was meant to be viewed from either side, thus it was probably intended as an architectural element in a frieze or as a room divider, and is not currently free standing (and would probably best be mounted on granite or marble). Weight is about 24 lbs. The muscular, stylized art deco vintage warrior is reminiscent of the portrayal of African natives generally associated with the Cotton Club, that is, both caricaturized and idealized simultaneously, and is possibly an original architectural feature of that or a similarly themed establishment. The expensive casting process almost certainly indicates that few of these were done, and they are commensurately scarce. Shipping at cost. [Attributes: First Edition]

For a reproduction of the image see page 77 in Boulet "The Tranquility and the Turbulence". A beautiful woodcut by the famous Canadian artist depicting barns in the english countryside from the families trip to England 1924-25. A soft and Idyllic landscape with delicate trees in the distance, a beautifully thatched barn complex and calm reflective pool. Graceful lines and beautiful details (including a small cow to the bottom right). The excellent quality of framing and pristine condition makes this print especially desirable. Walter Joseph Phillips (October 25, 1884 &#150; July 5, 1963) was an English-born Canadian painter and woodcutter, acclaimed as one of Canada&#39;s most famous printmakers and for popularizing the colour woodcut in the style of the Japanese. His artistic career spanned from the 1900s through the 1940s, during which time his work was exhibited throughout North America and Great Britain. In 1940 he was asked to become a resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program. Its Walter Phillips Gallery, which focuses on contemporary art, is named after him. The Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta holds an extensive collection of Phillips works and a research archive..
