[NUMBER THEORY -MANUSCRIPT & OFF PRINTS]

1925. Original Wraps. Very Good. Three off prints on Theory of Numbers: Théorie Des Nombres – Sur les nombres de Fermat. Comptes rendus des séances de l’Académie des Sciences, t. 180, p. 799, séance du 16 mars 1925 (4to off print numbered p.1-2.); Sur Le Nombre N= 1/9 (1023 – 1) 8vo. 3, [1]p. ; Sur Les Nombres De Fermat. Fn= 22n + 1. 8vo. 5, [3]p. Plus approximately 65 pages of manuscript notes in French with calculations. The majority of the manuscript pages appear to deal with quadratic forms in Leonard Dickson’s - Studies in the theory of numbers. (1930), which contains numerous original investigations in the theory of quadratic forms in three or four variables. In Dickson’s earlier work on the History of the Theory of Numbers (1919-23) he provided little interpretation and made no attempt to contextualize the results being described. It is probably with this background that Kraitchik devoted much of the manuscript sheets to Dickson’s work. Other manuscript notes dealing with other equations from Euler “Continuous la table” dated March to December, 1939. The last group of manuscript pages in 8vo deal with equations from a publication of Landar(sic) Backman dated November 1931 and May 1938. There are a few loose sheets with calculations but no identification. These may be sheets used to make rough calculations. Together this manuscript collection and off prints offer a very good example of Kraitchik’s thinking in regards the theory of numbers. Although Kraitchik is often thought of in relation to Recreational Mathematics, he really spent considerable time with the Theory of Numbers. The present collection of 3 off prints and manuscript sheets most of which are on square lined sheets is thus quite rare and significant for this noted 20th century mathematician.

        FARMINGTON

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925 (1928). Third Edition. hardcover. A gorgeous copy, beautifully preserved, with the original dustwrapper which has a long, jagged but closed tear on the front panel that, under mylar, is not terribly offensive. Fine in a lovely dustwrapper. A novel that is really a thinly disguised autobiography of the great labor lawyer. INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper "To my good friend Geo/Bye- who managed to get/money for stuff that he would/have been glad to pay any/journalists or magazine editors/for printing them/With regard and affection of" and SIGNED "Clarence Darrow/June 6th 1929." Bye was a public relations and literary agent who worked for Darrow placing his articles as well as for other notable figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt. Darrow's sharp humor is readily apparent in his inscription.

        Carry on Jeeves

Herbert Jenkins, London 1925 - HARDBACK - First Edition - A very good book in clean green boards. Internally, there is some foxing to the first and last couple of pages and to the text block. There is a small name and date to the front board and a small name to the front endpaper. The dust wrapper is in very good condition. The wrapper has benefitted from some subtle restoration to the spine tips and to the corners of front and rear flap folds, by one of the UK's leading paper archivists. The end result is a wrapper that shows very well indeed, whilst still retaining that lightly toned look that comes with age. The wraper is the correct 1st impression with the correct price of 3/6net to the spine, and fourteen earlier Wodehouse titles to the rear flap. An attractive copy of an exceedingly rare early Wodehouse title. Book and wrapper are the correct first impression from 1925. [Attributes: First Edition]

1925 NE Telephone and Telegraph Inventory and Property Appraisal w/many Photographs, State of New Hampshire

NE Telephone and Telegraph, 1925. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. An archive of over 110 7 1/2 x 11 inch photographs mounted on linen, and enclosed in a binder with 2 screw posts. The binder is marked "Outside Plant - General Store and Garage Equipment - General Tools and Implements as Included in Inventory and Appraisal of Property New England Telephone and Telegraph Company State of New Hampshire as of April 1, 1925" The first category tab has a stamp on it marked "Exhibit No 14 New England Tel & Tel Co, New Hampshire P.S.C. No D. 964 Witness GK Manson". Major Mason organized the 401st Telegraph Battalion from the NE Tel and Telegraph Company and was involved in analysis of the Transatlantic Cable (see Circuits of Victory by Lavine). An expert in the legal field indicated that this book was 'an exhibit compiled for use in a state rate case - a substantial portion of which consisted of proving that the physical plant included in the company';s ‘rate base'; [on which it was allowed to earn its ‘fair return';] was ‘used and useful'; and fairly valued.' The binder is a fascinating view into the state of the art in telephone/telegraph cabling and the outside plant in 1925. Sections include Pole Lines, Exchange Poles, Toll Poles, Aerial Cable, Exchange Aerial Cable, Toll Aerial Cable, Exch. Aerial Wire, Toll Aerial Wire, UG Conduit, UG Cable, Exch UG Cable, Toll UG Cable, Motor Vehicles (this section empty), Other Accounts, Submarine Cable, GNL Tools and Implements. Each section has large format (7 ¾ x 11") photographs mounted on linen documenting in visual form representative examples of the type of inventory documented in summary form on pages marked (for example) "Exchange Pole Lines Summary - Reproduction Cost - Fully Owned and Jointly Owned". Over 110 photographs total, most with typed explanations of the photograph at the bottom. Possibly a unique survival, archives of this nature are certainly scarce on the market, and worthy of study and preservation. While individual photographs are found occasionally, groupings like this which tell a story larger than the sum of their parts are quite uncommon. A fine addition to any telecommunications collection.
