        Carry on Jeeves

Herbert Jenkins, London 1925 - HARDBACK - First Edition - A very good book in clean green boards. Internally, there is some foxing to the first and last couple of pages and to the text block. There is a small name and date to the front board and a small name to the front endpaper. The dust wrapper is in very good condition. The wrapper has benefitted from some subtle restoration to the spine tips and to the corners of front and rear flap folds, by one of the UK's leading paper archivists. The end result is a wrapper that shows very well indeed, whilst still retaining that lightly toned look that comes with age. The wraper is the correct 1st impression with the correct price of 3/6net to the spine, and fourteen earlier Wodehouse titles to the rear flap. An attractive copy of an exceedingly rare early Wodehouse title. Book and wrapper are the correct first impression from 1925. [Attributes: First Edition]

Le Mausolée des Princes Sa’adiens a Marrakech. Preface par Edmond Doutté. Texte Arab et Traduction des Inscriptions par Félix Arin

Paris: Librairie Orientaliste Paul Geuthner, 1925. . Sole edition. Two volumes (text and plates). (ii), xxii, 72 pp; the plates accompanied by 8 pp., predominantly comprising a table. The text in original beige soft card wrappers, the plates housed in original stiff card portfolio of which the flaps and cloth spine have been sometime sympathetically restored, black and white illustration pasted to upper board, cloth ties. Much of the text unopened. 3 plans loosely inserted at rear of the text volume, 83 illustrations of which the first 16 are in colour, the remainder in black and white, some photographic. Very good condition. The Saadi Dynasty held sway in parts or the whole of Morocco at various points in the 16th and 17th Centuries. The tomb which this work documents was constructed during the rule of Ahmed Al Mansur in the middle of this period. It disappeared from view for several centuries before being rediscovered in 1917 and subsequently overseen by the Service de Beaux-Artes et d’Architecture du Protectorat. An uncommon and very decorative work.

1925 NE Telephone and Telegraph Inventory and Property Appraisal w/many Photographs, State of New Hampshire

NE Telephone and Telegraph, 1925. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. An archive of over 110 7 1/2 x 11 inch photographs mounted on linen, and enclosed in a binder with 2 screw posts. The binder is marked "Outside Plant - General Store and Garage Equipment - General Tools and Implements as Included in Inventory and Appraisal of Property New England Telephone and Telegraph Company State of New Hampshire as of April 1, 1925" The first category tab has a stamp on it marked "Exhibit No 14 New England Tel & Tel Co, New Hampshire P.S.C. No D. 964 Witness GK Manson". Major Mason organized the 401st Telegraph Battalion from the NE Tel and Telegraph Company and was involved in analysis of the Transatlantic Cable (see Circuits of Victory by Lavine). An expert in the legal field indicated that this book was 'an exhibit compiled for use in a state rate case - a substantial portion of which consisted of proving that the physical plant included in the company';s ‘rate base'; [on which it was allowed to earn its ‘fair return';] was ‘used and useful'; and fairly valued.' The binder is a fascinating view into the state of the art in telephone/telegraph cabling and the outside plant in 1925. Sections include Pole Lines, Exchange Poles, Toll Poles, Aerial Cable, Exchange Aerial Cable, Toll Aerial Cable, Exch. Aerial Wire, Toll Aerial Wire, UG Conduit, UG Cable, Exch UG Cable, Toll UG Cable, Motor Vehicles (this section empty), Other Accounts, Submarine Cable, GNL Tools and Implements. Each section has large format (7 ¾ x 11") photographs mounted on linen documenting in visual form representative examples of the type of inventory documented in summary form on pages marked (for example) "Exchange Pole Lines Summary - Reproduction Cost - Fully Owned and Jointly Owned". Over 110 photographs total, most with typed explanations of the photograph at the bottom. Possibly a unique survival, archives of this nature are certainly scarce on the market, and worthy of study and preservation. While individual photographs are found occasionally, groupings like this which tell a story larger than the sum of their parts are quite uncommon. A fine addition to any telecommunications collection.

Boni & Liveright|~| NY: Boni & Liveright. 1925. The first book by this novelist and publisher who was also a figure in the American expatriate community in Paris during the 1920s. Loeb helped Hemingway get his first book, In Our Time, published in the U.S.: in fact, it was when Leon Fleischman, Boni & Liveright's literary scout, came to Paris with the contract for Doodab for Loeb that Hemingway turned over the stories that Liveright published later that year. Despite the support and encouragement Loeb gave Hemingway, he became the basis for the character Robert Cohn in The Sun Also Rises, an unflattering portrait that Loeb later tried to correct in his 1959 memoir The Way It Was. Foxing to endpages and edges of text block; near fine in a very good dust jacket with some blended staining and tanning, minor edge chipping and a narrow, closed tear at mid spine. . First Edition.         The Making of a Stockbroker

New York: George H. Doran,1925. First edition. Octavo, original maroon cloth. In near fine condition. Without the rare dust jacket. The Making of a Stockbroker was published by George H. Doran Company in 1924. Lefevre dedicated his book to John Wing Prentiss, a new breed of stockbroker of that era. This fictionalized account follows a brokerage firm from its founding through 1924, and the author explains how the stockbroker can work from the inside to make earn lucratively without using propagandic whitewashing. Lefevre follows the narrative of John Kent Wing to also portray the inner-workings of the market while contributing to the decade's new image of managers. Lefevre wrote during the great bull market of the 1920s, and he befittingly conceived of virtuous public-spirited manager, one who places long-term economic stability above selfish interests. The Making of Stockbroker is therefore an instruction for personal form in light of human nature, but it is also a history of the market after the age of the buccaneer but before the great depression and subsequent security regulations.
