        The Great Gatsby.

New York: Charles Scribners, 1925. First edition, first state of Fitzgerald's magnum opus. Octavo, original dark green cloth. First state with "chatter" p.60, "northern" p.119, "sick in tired" p.205, and "Union Street station" p. 211. In excellent condition with light rubbing to the extremities. In 1922, Fitzgerald announced his decision to write "something new--something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." That extraordinary, beautiful, intricately patterned, and above all, simple novel became The Great Gatsby, arguably Fitzgerald's finest work and certainly the book for which he is best known. A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, Gatsby captured the spirit of the author's generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Cyril Connolly called The Great Gatsby one of the half dozen best American novels: "Gatsby remains a prose poem of delight and sadness which has by now introduced two generations to the romance of America, as Huckleberry Finn and Leaves of Grass introduced those before it" (Modern Movement 48). Consistently gaining popularity after World War II, the novel became an important part of American high school curricula. It was the basis for numerous stage and film adaptations. Gatsby had four film adaptations, with two exceptionally big-budget versions: the 1974 version starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, as well as Baz Luhrmann's 2013 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carrie Mulligan. Fitzgerald's granddaughter praised Lurhmann's adaptation, stating "Scott would be proud.

        Autograph Letter Signed

Capri Italy: np, 1925. First. Fine. A REMARKABLE LETTER: F. SCOTT FITZGERALD EVALUATES HIS CAREER AND OFFERS LIFE ADVICE WHILE AWAITING THE PUBLICATION OF THE GREAT GATSBY. The letter, responding to a request by an American teacher S.D. Green to offer advice to his students, is written in ink and signed by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It reads in full: Hotel Tiberio, Capri, Italy Dear Mr. Green: Your letter followed me around Europe and reached me here. Tell them please how I regret this delay, and that I appreciate their interest and the fact that they have chosen me. I'm afraid my own career, which has been erratic and disordered, if seldom dull, would not be a very inspiring one to dilate on -- in fact my hope is that my own children will be better equipped for life and less trustful as to what their elders (including me) tell them.  If I were to say anything it would be that each man's truth is peculiar to himself and that nothing is worth believing as to conduct in life except that which you find out for yourself or at least confirm for yourself. With best wishes to them and to you Sincerely, [signed] F. Scott Fitzgerald Although not dated, the letter was written between February and April 1925, while Fitzgerald was staying at the Hotel Tiberio in Capri awaiting the publication of his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, published on April 10, 1925. Fitzgerald during this time was in a state of high anxiety. As late as March 19, he was still wrestling with the title, sending a cable to Max Perkins that he was "crazy about [the] title Under the Red White and Blue" (instead of "The Great Gatsby"), but Perkins replied that it was too late to change. In his letter of March 31 to Perkins (from the Hotel Tiberio), he worries, "As the day approaches, my nervousness increases. Tomorrow is the 1st [of April] and your wire says the 10th. I'll be here until the 25th, probably later, so if the book prospers I'll expect some sort of cable before I leave for Paris.... Yours in a Tremble, Scott." The turbulent nature of Fitzgerald's career and life is legendary, and in this letter - written at one of the most critical moments of his life - Fitzgerald reveals a high level of self-awareness (and prescience) in realizing that his path may not be a model for others to follow. In the actual advice he does offer, he displays his own insecurities over the discovery of truth and a distrust for authority that would become an essential characteristic for members of his "Lost Generation". The recipient, S.D. Green, wrote letters soliciting the advice of various noteworthy people during the years 1922-25. Hotel Tiberio, Capri, Italy. Feb-April 1925. One 8x12 inch sheet, written on one side; custom decorative box by noted book designer Sjoerd Hofstra. Usual folds, evidence of paper clip at top margin; generally fine. FITZGERALD LETTERS WITH SUCH REVEALING CONTENT ARE EXTRAORDINARILY RARE ON THE MARKET.

Cambridge: At The University Press. 1925 - 1927. First printing of the second edition. First printing of the second edition. Three volumes. Large 8vo. Vol I: (xlvi), 674pp, [1]; Vol II: (xxxi), 742pp, [1]; Vol III: (viii), 491pp. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine. An excellent near fine set. The binding of each volume square and firm, with minor rubbing and light bumping at the extremities and slight fading or colour variation to the upper board of volume III. The contents are entirely complete, clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. An exceptionally nice example of a set usually encountered in less than attractive (often ex-library) condition. The first revised edition of this landmark work. The revisions were done by Russell, although Whitehead was given the opportunity to advise. In addition to the correction of minor errors throughout the original text, changes to the new edition included the inclusion of a new Introduction and three new appendices. (The appendices discuss the theory of quantification, mathematical induction and the axiom of reducibility, and the principle of extensionality respectively. (Irvine, Andrew David: "Principia Mathematica", The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Winter 2016). The three volumes of the first edition were published in 1910, 1912 and 1913.         SOVIET FILM ART] Kollezhskii registrator [i.e. The Stationmaster]

Mezhrabpom- Rus', Moscow 1925 - 16 pp.: ill., photographs. 30,5?22,5 cm. In original illustrated wrappers by I. Bograd. Near fine. Some soiling and slightly rubbed spine. One of 15000. This edition is dedicated to the Soviet silent film which came out in 1925. Scenes from the film with captions followed by small excerption from original story - Alexander Pushkin's classic novella 'The Stationmaster'. In 1927 Mary Pickford after coming back from Soviet Russia in an interview she called The Stationmaster the best film she watched there. Israel Bograd (1899-1938) was a designer, graphic, poster artist. He is mostly known for his works in advertising and film posters. He based his works on contemporary Western and Soviet art, but his posters of 1920-30s stylistically close to art deco were slightly standing out from a number of works of the time. Characters of his posters contrast with images forced by Soviet ideology. Nevertheless some of his remarkable works are considered classic of Soviet advertising. The film by Ivan Moskvin (1874-1946) was a Soviet actor and director. This is the only film he directed. No copies in USA according to Worldcat. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Illustrations are from original paintings, twenty-six in all, including ten full-page color plates, and a magnificent sun-gilded mountain landscape, with castles, on the endpapers.
