A little fading to spine and edges of boards. An excellent copy in dust jacket with only a small chip form the corner of the lower panel. Second edition thus, the companion volume to the 1930 film based loosely on Melville's novel. Moby Dick was originally filmed in 1925 as a silent picture titled The Sea Beast and starring John Barrymore as Ahab. In 1930 it was reshot in sound, retaining the same plot and with Barrymore again playing the lead. A companion book was printed in 1925 and then reprinted with new title page, illustrations, and dust jacket to coincide with the sound version of the movie. A beautiful copy in the colour jacket featuring an illustration of Barrymore as Ahab.

London: Hogarth Press, 1925. 8vo., 305pp., light grayish blue cloth, second edition issued November - the first was issued in April. A short & amusing Als. from Virginia Woolf tipped to the front free endpaper, reading: "To / Dr. Rendel, / A small dose nightly to / ensure sleep / Virginia Woolf / Christmas 1925". The book is further signed in pencil by F.E. Rendel at the top of the front endpaper. At the corner of the front pastedown is another [very lightly written] inscription that reads: "For Victoria [Strachey] with love from . March 21st., 1951" A very good copy lacking the dustwrapper & showing light general use. There is some spotting to some of the front & back pages, the spine is slightly yellowed & there is a chip to the paper spine label which is mildly tanned. Provenance: Ex Libris; Dr. Frances Elinor Rendel & Acquired from the library of Victoria Strachey & Mark Holloway. [Lytton Strachey was Victoria Strachey's great uncle] - Dr. F.E. Rendel, to whom this letter is inscribed by Virginia Woolf, was Doctor Frances Elinor Rendel (1885 - 1942), the daughter of Lytton Strachey's Eldest sister Eleanor, & was known as Ellie Rendel. At some point in 1924, Dr. F.E. Rendel became the London doctor of Virginia Woolf, Roger Fry & the Bells (Vanessa & Clive). Vanessa Bell writes in a letter to Virginia Woolf of April 23rd. 1927:- "Roger [Fry] comes tomorrow. He was to have come before, but it seems that Ellie [Rendel] nearly killed him, like you, with her new brand of inoculations, and he couldn't start as he meant to." Dr. F.E.         Bronze of an African figure

      [Circa 1925]. First. Bronze figure of a dancing African warrior, armed with shield and spear, unsigned and without obvious foundry information. Approximately 28" high by about 12" at the widest point, and basically two-dimensional, that is, about 1/2" at its deepest point. The dore bronze is finished on both sides, indicating that it was meant to be viewed from either side, thus it was probably intended as an architectural element in a frieze or as a room divider, and is not currently free standing (and would probably best be mounted on granite or marble). Weight is about 24 lbs. The muscular, stylized art deco vintage warrior is reminiscent of the portrayal of African natives generally associated with the Cotton Club, that is, both caricaturized and idealized simultaneously, and is possibly an original architectural feature of that or a similarly themed establishment. The expensive casting process almost certainly indicates that few of these were done, and they are commensurately scarce. Shipping at cost. .

        Original Woman's KKK Hood and Robe

      [Texas. circa 1925]. Original woman's white linen Klan robe, 46" long with 20" long sleeves with original mother-of-pearl buttons affixed. With a 70" long rope belt with tassel intact. The word "crusader" is embroidered in blue thread on both the front and back seams. Red and white felt patch depicting a cross is affixed to half-cape, and is a bit worn. Some spotting and soiling, with occasional light stains, toned and a bit musty, overall about very good. Reasonably good knowledge of the provenance and style indicates that this is likely from Texas.Original second wave Klan robe, circa 1925, presumably made for a member of the WKKK, (Women's Ku Klux Klan). The 1920s saw a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan, and it was during this time that women formed a supplementary group to the Klan. For the first time they were officially members, with their own titles and a capital in Little Rock, Arkansas. The women's group supported their male counterparts by focusing on the perceived moral, educational, and civic duties of being a white American woman. This was apparently defined by being anti-Jewish, anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant, anti-black, and violent when the need arose. Like so many other "great" ideas, this one too collapsed, and women wouldn't be full participating members in the Klan again until the 1980s.An interesting and compelling artifact which has continued to stand up as a sobering and enduring symbol of American racism and the terror created by it. The painstaking and even loving stitchery seem in marked contrast to the hateful purpose for which it was employed. Klan paraphernalia occasionally comes on the market, but this is the first woman's robe we've encountered. .

Hand printed in red, blue and black on specially watermarked ("knight-in-armour") Batchelor hand-made paper. Initials by Graily Hewitt. Large Folio, in the original Ashendene binding of vellum over heavy boards and backed in dark brown calf, lettered in gilt on the spine in compartments separated by exceptionally tall and wide raised bands. iv, 216 pp. including the colophon. Very fine and beautiful, an exceptional copy. A REMARKABLE COPY. THIS IS THE FIRST EDITION OF THE ASHENDENE PRESS PRINTING, A BEAUTIFUL BOOK SET IN THE MOST SPLENDID OF THE ASHENDENE TYPES.       Ashendene Press, Chelsea 1925 - Hardcover. 1 of 200 copies printed on paper. There were also fifteen copies printed on vellum. Printed by C. H. St. J. Hornby on the banks of "sweet Thames" with the help of I. Jenkins, Compositor, and G. Faulkner, Pressman. Printing began in May 1924 and was finished in July 1925. This superb book is a large folio bound in the original full vellum boards with brown leather spine titled in gilt. Raised bands and six compartments to the spine. Minor bumping to the corners of front board and minor rubbing to boards and hinges. The hinges near the foot of the spine were starting and have been professionally restored. The interior is beautifully and elaborately printed in black, red, and blue in the Subiaco type created by the press. Creasing to front endpaper and occasional light smudge marks to the interior, else very clean and bright. A fine production from this monumental private press. 216 pages. PRI/011513.       Mount Vernon, New York William Edwin Rudge 1925 - Octavo. 51pp. One of 500 copies. A one-act play, set in Medieval Spain, by the English poet and dramatist T. Sturge Moore. Designed by Bruce Rogers and bound in full golden morocco by Peter Franck, who at one time executed tooled leather bindings for the Roycroft Shop, where he worked alongside Dard Hunter, Louis Kinder, and Sterling Lord. Franck later went to work for Rudge before opening his own bindery in Connecticut, where he bound a number of Dard Hunter's Mountain House Press books. This binding features a center gilt-tooled design to both boards, fashioned of printers' ornaments that were probably designed by Rogers. Some of the ornaments are repeated in a gilt border to the outer edges of the boards, on the turn-ins, and on the spine, which is in five compartments with gilt lettering to the center compartment. Franck's imprint appears in gilt at the bottom of the spine and on the rear turn-in, which also bears the publisher's imprint. Endpapers marbled. Some uniform toning to spine, else fine. T.e.g. Housed in a fleece-lined morocco and decorated-paper folding case, lettered in gilt on the spine. Case shows some wear, with a two-inch split to the bottom hinge as well as some chipping and rubbing to the spine and corners. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Gladding Fire Apparatus Manufacturing Company of Rhode Island: An Early 20th Century Fire Fighting Archive Collection

      (Rhode Island) 1925 - A collection of approximately 10 Autograph and Typed letters, 20 business manuscripts, 18 mechanical drawings and blueprints, and 14 printed brochures, broadsheets, trade cards, etc., from The Gladding Fire Apparatus Manufacturing Company. Also included are 2 select water faucets and 3 important items of fire fighting equipment manufactured by the company in the early 20th Century. The company's founder, Jesse G. Gladding of Rhode Island, was an inventor and manufacturer of various fire fighting equipment (shut-off pipes, valves, combination spanner, hook, and hose carriers; etc.), faucets, and waterproof boots and clothing. Many of his patented inventions revolutionized the industry. The correspondence, office manuscripts, and printed materials are in overall very good condition. They were part of Gladding's working files, and are annotated with numerous marginal notes in his hand. Also included are working drafts and drawings in pen and pencil, product descriptions, and correspondence relating to his ideas and inventions. Most of the original drawings and printed mechanical designs are in overall good or better condition; the two largest rolled sheets and the blueprints are fair only. A unique collection that documents Gladding's most important inventions and related business of the firm over a thirty year period. Further details available upon request.

Poet Hart Crane&#39;s copy with his ownership Signature on the front fly. An important scholarly attempt to examine black life in the South in the context of indigenous music. Crane has made several pencil notes in the text, mostly underlining and check marks, and a few words, as well as a list of page marks indicating songs on the rear pastedown. .
