        Mrs. Dalloway

London: Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press, 1925. First edition, printed in an edition of 2,000 copies. 293, [1] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Original rust-coloured cloth. Fine in original dust-jacket designed by Virginia's sister Vannessa Bell. Minor offsetting to endpapers. Very scarce in original bright dust-jacket with just a few tiny nicks and minute chipping at head of spine. First edition, printed in an edition of 2,000 copies. 293, [1] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. In a fine example of the rare dust-jacket. A magnificent copy of one of Woolf's finest novels, in the rare dust-jacket designed by her sister, Vanessa Bell. Comprised of two intersecting narratives -- that of society woman Clarissa Dalloway as she prepares to host a party and of shell-shocked World War I veteran Septimus Warren Smith --Woolf's novel is a high mark of modernist fiction. "Woolf maintained that her generation had to break the mold of the novel in order to speak of the radically changed world around them [and] Mrs. Dalloway did break the mold ... It established her as a powerful force in the British Modernist literary scene" (Miller, Masterpieces of British Modernism, p. 153). Kirkpatrick A9a; Woolmer 82

Archive of London Artist, Norman Walker James, Featuring a Notable Project Undertaken for Belgian Royalty, a Historic Emblem of the Kingsbury Parade of Shops in London.

London: Ypres, circa 1925-1945., 1925. Archive of London Artist, featuring a tribute to king of Belgium; comprises 5 published book dustjackets for notable authors, 2 bookplate designs, 11 heraldic arms of the British monarchy and the Royal Armed Forces, 30 hand-drawn and coloured Oxford coat of arms, 21 unique greeting cards, 7 photographs, and a few other items pertaining to publications and to colleges. Artworks and photographs range in size, the smallest measuring approximately 8 x 11 cm and the largest measuring 20 x 25 cm. With the exception of the greeting cards and bookplates, all other works are mounted to large cardstock leafs measuring approximately 29 x 35 cm. Two series of works are accompanied by typescript descriptions; one is accompanied by a facsimile letter from the College of Arms in London. The lot in very good condition, providing insight into the works of an all but forgotten London-based commercial artist who was active before and during the Second World War. Norman Walker James (1886-1963) was a commercial artist and designer established in London from about 1910-1911. He is listed as a Decorative Designer residing at a boarding house in Kensington, in the 1911 census. Although little-known today, he evidently rose to some acclaim in his trade, as he was selected to design a memorial tablet for Belgian King Albert I. Born in Leicester, he was the son of a congregational minister. The present archive consists of an artist's own retained copies of his work, which form a fascinating portfolio of a man who was notable and active, not long ago from the 1920s into at least the 1940s, and yet seems to be vanished into obscurity. His undertakings and contracts connected him to Belgian royalty, notable publishers, and administrators of renowned college institutions. Especially interesting are the items pertaining to his contribution to a memorial located in the Sint-Maartenskathedraal in Ypres [St Martin's Cathedral re-built in 1930] , including a photograph of the tablet designed by James and accompanied by his design description, two coats of arms printed true-to-size as they would be on the tablet, as well as two rare large press photographs of its unveiling on 21 May 1938. The tablet served to honour Albert I King of Belgium together with the British Armed Forces for the gift of the exquisite rose stained glass window mounted above the south transept door. James designed the nine-foot tall tablet, on which he hand painted the inscription, and which was unveiled by King Leopold III. It featured the coat of arms of Albert I, as well as the Arms of the British Army, the RAF and the Dragoon Guards. Some of James' dustjacket designs retained here include: Commodore Anson's Voyage Into the South Seas and Around the World, by Boyle T. Somerville, published in 1934; The Recollections of Sir Henry Dickens, published in 1934; The Daughters of George III, by Dorothy Margaret Stuart, published in 1939; War & Peace, by Leo Tolstoy, published in 1942 (Also with original book boards); The Heart of Jade, by Salvador de Madariaga, published in 1944. Other book and publishing related designs include: Four photographs showing the dedication leafs and front boards of a book issued by Great Britain's Postal Administration to commemorate the tricentennial anniversary of Norway's postal service and to celebrate the two nations' collaboration in a Universal Postal Union; A front wrapper for a 1934 issue of "Paris Salon Illustrated" magazine for artists. On two leafs are mounted 30 hand coloured drawings of heraldic shields, being the Arms of the University of Oxford, and twenty-nine of its colleges or halls, some examples of which include Pembroke College, St. John's College, Jesus College, Queens College, Magdalen College, and Campion Hall. A ticket of R. P. Gossop Limited stamped "Norman James" reveals a connection to the agency. [Reginald Percy Gossop (1876-1951) was a commercial artist specializing in graphic and landscape art, and is best remembered for designing posters for the Underground Group from 1925 to 1932. He started an agency for artists circa 1920. He studied at Birkbeck College in London, then at the Hammersmith School of Art.]. Manuscript.

Sangschaw (Inscribed And Signed By The Author To The Poet Maurice Lindsay)

William Blackwood And Sons 1925 - First Edition published by William Blackwood And Sons in 1925. First issue with dark blue cloth and gilt titling. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Some light pushing at the spine ends. Some toning to the text-block with some spotting to the prelims and endpapers. Occasional light spot to the pages in places. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Toning to the edges, folds and the spine. Light creasing and mild edge-wear at the spine ends with a little loss. Light archival tape repairs to the spine folds on the verso. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been Inscribed and Signed By the Author to the front blank endpaper: 'Signed with pleasure and warmest regards for my friend, fellow poet and fellow scot, Maurice Lindsay, Hugh M'Diarmid, 14/9/74'. With Maurice Lindsay's bookplate to the front pastedown and his signature in green ink to the front end-paper. The recipient Maurice Lindsay was a Scottish broadcaster, writer and poet. He became a radio broadcaster, also editing the 1946 'Anthology Modern Scottish Poetry', and writing music criticism. He later became Programme Controller at Border Television. Hugh MacDiarmid (C.M. Grieve) was Scotland’s most influential and controversial writer in the 20th century. He urged and enabled the regeneration of all aspects of Scotland’s literature and culture through his poetry, polemical writing and political activity. 'A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle' (1926) is generally regarded as Scotland’s masterpiece of Modernism. 'He started writing in Scots, using words and phrases he knew from boyhood and acquired from reading in dictionaries and works of Scottish literature from earlier eras. The poems of Sangschaw (1925), Penny Wheep (1926) and A Drunk Man Looks At The Thistle (1926) were shocking, adult, wry, rebarbative, difficult, piercingly sweet, unsentimental and brutal. They established a new dispensation for Scottish literature, and modernist lusts: for the body and the sexually explicit cognate with Joyce and Lawrence; for the local and demotic, cognate with William Carlos Williams; for the difficult, cognate with Eliot; for the vatic and austere, cognate with Yeats and Pound; for the intellectually demanding, cognate with Stevens and Valéry; but uniquely in the Scottish context, reclaiming a literary history that had fallen into neglect and obfuscation. Forget about Burns, he advised, go back to Dunbar and Henryson, recover and reclaim a national tradition that goes back through millennia.' (Scottish Poetry Library). A wonderful signed association copy of the author's first poetry collection and scarce with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.         Autograph Manuscript, being a complete draft of his short story "A Little Boy Lost," with a partial Typescript on the verso of his short story "The Poor Man"

np, 1925. 12 pp., written on rectos only, corrected in holograph throughout. Versos with typescript of part of the story "The Poor Man." Editorial dockets ("2926 words" etc.) to first page. 4to. Loose sheets, staple holes at upper corners, some wrinkling at margins. In a crimson cloth chemise lettered in gilt. 12 pp., written on rectos only, corrected in holograph throughout. Versos with typescript of part of the story "The Poor Man." Editorial dockets ("2926 words" etc.) to first page. 4to. An early draft - likely the first - of one of Coppard's finest short stories, "A Little Boy Lost." The story is about Tom and Eva Grieve, two English farm laborers, and their attempts over his lifetime to interest their beloved but disengaged son David in some kind of activity. After winning a promising apprenticeship with an engineer, David suffers an illness and becomes confined to his bed and remains there into adulthood, his mother treating him with a daily spoonful of brandy. His one attempt to rouse himself and integrate into village life results in his being carried home drunk from the pub several nights in a row. Coppard's touch for English village pathos and his ear for its dialect is on display in the story, which appeared in The Fishmonger's Fiddle and Other Tales (1925). There are numerous deletions and insertions in Coppard's hand throughout, including several attempts at a title in the upper margin on the first page ("This is my son" "Their son" "The cuckoo" "The lost") before "The Little Boy Lost" [sic] is underlined at top. On the verso of the sheets are a partial typed draft of Coppard's short story "The Poor Man," paginated 18-29.

        Pastoralki [Pastorals]. Drzeworyty Tadeusza Makowskiego

Paris: Polskie Towarzystwo Przyjaciól Ksiezki, 1925. Quarto (26 × 21 cm). Original pictorial wrappers with a woodcut by Makowski; twelve woodcuts, of which six full- page; 34, [3] pp. Very good. Considered one of the most beautiful Polish artist books of the twentieth-century, this edition of twelve modernist Christmas carols is illustrated with striking primitivist woodcuts by Tadeusz Makowski (1882-1932), a Polish painter active in Paris. Futurist poet and painter Czyzewski (1880-1945) was one of the founders of the "Formist" group, the main avant-garde organization in Poland from 1917-22; from 1922 to 1930 he lived in Paris, where he exhibited widely. "The Pastoralki is both a modern work and at the same time one that reaches into the wealth of folk art. Its modernity finds expression in conceiving folkiness as an artistic inspiration far removed from the ethnographic folklorism; it also expresses itself in a close relationship to dadaism" (Wyka 104).         Three Photograph Albums of British Raj in North-West Frontier Province, Balochistan and Sindh, Pre-Independence Pakistan.

Balochistan, Sindh, India and Pakistan 1925 - Three photograph albums of firsthand views captured by a young soldier whilst serving in the era of British Raj, with the Rifle Brigade of the British Army (The Prince Consort's Own). Altogether containing 188 gelatin silver print photographs measuring approximately 4 x 6 cm, neatly ensconced behind window mounts, recto and verso onto thick grey cardstock leaves. With 6 larger print photographs (16 x 11 cm, captioned to verso) of certain images in the album, loosely inserted. 8vo. albums with like bindings, grey cloth boards ruled in black, two volumes measuring approximately 15,5 x 11,5 cm, one larger oblong volume measuring approximately 20 x 15,5 cm. Together with the original film negatives contained in an Eastman Negative Album complete with manuscript numbered index, rare with the original sleeve, and captioned to front in manuscript "4th Batt. Rifle Brigade." A scant few of the negatives are captioned in manuscript to margins, revealing dates in 1925, and one possibly being as early 11/1923. Together with 1 newspaper clipping showing and describing a natural disaster which took place ten years later at Quetta. Album corners slightly bumped, otherwise in Very Good Condition. Through the eyes and camera lens of a young British Infantry soldier we are shown what life was like in Pakistan long before independence, prior to the Second World War, and even before the devastating earthquake of 1935. Captivating scenes illustrate local custom and trades, British Army duty and collaboration with the Indian Army. Images and corresponding film negatives suggest that the lad arrived at Karachi onboard the troopship SS Barpeta. Changes in seasons, together with one captioned negative which seems to bear the date 1923, and others definitely dating to 1925, indicate a lengthy tour abroad. Scenes are from Quetta, Chaman, Karachi, Bela, and travelling in between, sometimes on the brink of forbidden regions of the Northwest Frontier.

        Gemalte Musik - Painted Music

2 leaves including brief introductory text on the nature of photogravure and information on the Phönix printing and publishing house, followed by 8 mounted color photogravures of synaesthetic designs that translate various sounds and musical styles into images, titles include "Adagio", "Major Accord", "Musical Impression", "Furioso", "Wooden Wind Instruments", "Military March", "Chamber Music", and "Piano Concert". 4to. Printed and embossed thick paper portfolio, contents loose as issued. Berlin (Phönix Illustrationsdruck und Verlag) n.d. (circa 1925). Hans Boehm was active in Germany in the middle of the 20th century, working on set decoration, graphic arts, and church window design. While studying at the Psychological Research Society of Hamburg he crossed paths with Professor George Anschuetz, whose was doing research on the relationship between color and sound. With the "Painted Music" series, Boehm had said, "I paint what I hear." He was forced to leave Germany under Hitler and emigrated to Brazil, where he taught art, exhibited yearly, and continued his interest in color-sound research. This portfolio was published as a high-quality promotional work to market the photogravure technique available from Phönix. Very scarce; as of October 2017, WorldCat locates one holding of this edition worldwide, and one holding of a later edition in North America.

Archive of London Artist, Norman Walker James, Featuring a Notable Project Undertaken for Belgian Royalty, a Historic Emblem of the Kingsbury Parade of Shops in London.

Ypres, circa 1925-1945., London - Archive of London Artist, featuring a tribute to king of Belgium; comprises 5 published book dustjackets for notable authors, 2 bookplate designs, 11 heraldic arms of the British monarchy and the Royal Armed Forces, 30 hand-drawn and coloured Oxford coat of arms, 21 unique greeting cards, 7 photographs, and a few other items pertaining to publications and to colleges. [Reginald Percy Gossop (1876-1951) was a commercial artist specializing in graphic and landscape art, and is best remembered for designing p
