        The Making of a Stockbroker

New York: George H. Doran. (1925). Early reprint. Boards a trifle rubbed else near fine in a nice, gently spine-faded, near fine dustwrapper. Lefevre worked as a broker on Wall Street and was the financial writer for the New York Sun newspaper. His 1924 Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, based on the life of stock whiz Jesse Livermore, is considered a classic of the financial industry.         The Negro and His Songs: A Study of Typical Negro Songs in the South

Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina. 1925. First. First edition. A thin, horizontal strip of cloth neatly removed from the rear board, some pervasive splash marks on the spine, hinges show evidence of an old repair, still a pleasant, near very good copy, lacking the dustwrapper. Poet Hart Crane's copy with his ownership Signature on the front fly. An important scholarly attempt to examine black life in the South in the context of indigenous music. Crane has made several pencil notes in the text, mostly underlining and check marks, and a few words, as well as a list of page marks indicating songs on the rear pastedown. .

However, it does contain decorative title border, head- and tail-piece vignettes, and initials not found in the English edition.Danish illustrator and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) "was drawn early on to fairy tales and illustrated many volumes for Hodder & Stoughton: In Powder and Crinoline (1913), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1914), Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales (drawings completed in 1912, but first published in 1924), Hansel and Gretel (1925), and Red Magic (Jonathan Cape, 1930), a collections of fairy tales from around the world. Nielsen’s designs unite strong linearity with delicate colouring Characterized by a sense of two-dimensional flatness, Nielsen’s objects and people are highly stylized: foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of his illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a story’s emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions" (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales).       The Nonesuch Press, London - 1925 (1927 for the Pencil Drawings volume). One of 1500 copies, number 937 (perhaps, the last two numbers are somewhat illegible). Number 1337 of 1550 copies of The Pencil Drawings of William Blake. The writings are bound in marbled boards with cream colored vellum spines. 11 by 8 inches. Titles in gilt on the spines, with five raised bands. Pagination for the writings as follows: xviii, 364; vii, 397; vii, 430 pp. All plates present as called for. The pencil drawing volume is paginated xvi, followed by 82 plates with a page of text preceding each. Complete as issued. A comprehensive gathering of poems, letters and annotations to various people, including Swedenborg, by William Blake, accompanied by many of his illustrations. These writings and illustrations document his artistic vision, both through his finished works and through his thoughts conveyed in his letters. William Blake was a British poet, artist and printmaker, overlooked during his lifetime, but now considered to be one of Britain's best artists. Blake created prophetic poetry and visual arts, often mixing words and images, and which perhaps led many of his contemporaries to consider him mad. Books in GOOD+ to VERY GOOD condition. Spines rather browned and foxed, with minor foxing to the page edges and endpapers. Volume two and three with moderate foxing to the endpapers. General fading to the covers. The Pencil Drawing volume has moderate to heavy foxing to the endpapers, with minor scattered foxing throughout, mostly along the fore edge. Pages intermittently unopened throughout. The tri-folds and slipcases all bear some scuffing, minor soiling and general fading/uneven darkening, most noticeable along the hinges. Leather spines of the slipcases with some scuffs and a few small chips missing. Faint dampstain/area of discoloration to the lower edge of the slipcase of volume 3. The slipcase on the drawing volume is rather mottled along the extremities. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Two Autograph Letters, Signed, to collector Norman James of Baltimore, Maryland, March 30 and April 17, [1925], discussing sporting books and prints, The Natural History of the Ducks, and Phillips' idea for a bibliography of American sporting books

Wenham, Massachusetts, march 30 and april 17, [1925] - To the noted collector of sporting and color-plate books Norman James, of 300 Goodwood Road, Roland Park (see catalogues of his library, sold at Anderson Galleries, November13-23, 1928). From the first letter, dated March 30: "You gave me a wonderful afternoon yesterday and I shall long remember your house and that view - I'm looking over my few prints (about 38) and find the following which I don't remember seeing with you, although most likely you have them stowed away among those we didn't have time for: 'Snipes' drawn by J. Herring - (no date but looks very old); Wild Duck Shooting - A Good Day's Sport' N. Currier 1854 - a very fine one and I've never seen it except this one copy (large) Two figures by L. O. Earll, Pub by A.C. Zink 1880. Man with new breach loader talking to old market hunter with muzzle loader & ducks on back. "Another thing I'd like to see would be a catalogue of the old American books on sport. [Charles] Sheldon and you also would have about all of these, and I have a fair lot, but mine are more along old Am. books on birds and mammals. Guess you think I'm catalogue mad & think I will be by the time I get out the bibliog. for the duck book. - Hope to get away for west end of Alaska Penin in early May." For the privately distributed sets of his monumental Natural History of the Ducks, a finely illustrated work in four volumes, Phillips issued a separately printed Bibliography in an edition of 75 copies. The second letter, dated April 17, begins "I'm proud to think I have one or two American prints that you have not. The only worth while one is the large duck shooting picture -" Phillips also mentions The Natural History of the Ducks: "If you think of any duck 'cranks' who would be worth circularizing for my duck book, I wish you'd let me know -." Phillips did indeed pursue his idea for a catalogue: his Bibliography of American Sporting Books drew upon the library of Charles Sheldon and was published in 1930. It remains an essential reference 8vo. 1-1/2 pp.; 1 p., pen and ink on Windyknob stationery. Old folds. Fine
