The Autobiography of Mother Jones. Edited by Mary Field Parton. With an Introduction by Clarence Darrow

Chicago: Charles H. Kerr & Company. 1925. First Edition. Frontispiece portrait photograph +2 other photographs; 242pp; original blue cloth with title stamped in black on front cover and on spine, cream dust jacket with text in black, a fine copy in a fine dust jacket showing only traces of rubbing at folds and tips. & Mary Harris Jones (1830-1930), labor activist, is remembered for her work among the working poor, especially the coal miners. She helped organize the United Mine Workers and participated in the strikes of 1900 and 1902. Born in Ireland, raised in Toronto, Canada, she joined the U.S. labor force as a dressmaker in Chicago. She married a member of the Iron Molders' Union and had four children, all of whom perished in a yellow fever epidemic in 1867. In 1871 she lost all her possessions in the Chicago Fire of 1871. By 1877 her cause in life was fixed: she traveled across the country to those areas hardest hit by economic depression or labor strife. Contradictions in her philosophy abounded. Although she helped found the Social Democratic party in 1898, as well as the Industrial Workers of the World in 1905, she campaigned for the Democratic ticket in 1916. Her efforts can be summed up as always on behalf of those struggling to make a living wage in this country. No matter what the industry, she was on the side of the worker. Her efforts, though seemingly specific at the time of their occurance, had broad lasting repercussions on labor relations in this country. Public perception about the justness of labor's plight changed and, in no small measure, this was due to "Mother" Jones' activities. Eventually, these concerns were reflected in federal legislation, although not enough legislation in light of recent tragedies in U.S. coal mines. This autobiography is considered the primary source for information on her life and works. NAW II, pp. 286-288.
See an Image.
1925 - Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) was an American Impressionist artist, and a member of the Ten American Painters. He began his Studies at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1879, under Otto Grundmann, and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1888 Benson gained favorable attention in his first showing with the Society of American Artist in New York, with a piece that suggested the influence of academic Realism rather than Impressionism. By the early 1890s he began using his family as subjects; Benson later recalled having realized at the time that ¿design¿ was the most important component of painting. Consequently, works of the period provided evidence of a greater interest in patterns, silhouette, and abstract design. Late in his career, Frank Benson returned his boyhood interest in ornithological illustration. Following the 1913 Amory Show, Benson quietly moved to revolutionize the field of American sporting art. His rendering of wildlife, hunting, fishing, and camping infused the field with heightened artistic sensitivity, and reinvigorated a tradition- burdened field. Historical accounts indicate that Benson¿s teenage bird studies were extremely realistic. We can infer that they were similar to works by Alexander Pope (American, 1849-1924) and Louis Agassiz Fuertes (American, 1874-1927). Those painters concentrated on painting objects with precision. Each blue jay painted by Fuertes had exactly the same color tones and patterns. This is realism in the sense that twelve jays in a cage look precisely the same. In contrast, Benson¿s artistic training brought him to realize that a viewer¿s experience of a jay¿s appearance varies with the tint of light cast by the sky, whether the jay is front lit or back lit, and the background. Furthermore, Benson realized that we did not perceive the precise feather pattern of a bird at a distance of 20 feet. Benson had learned that our eyes perceive light, not objects, and he introduced that realization into the sporting art field. Other artists such as Roland Clark, A. L. Ripley, and Richard Bishop quickly followed his lead. In 1915 he first exhibited etchings of wild fowl, to popular acclaim. After 1920 Benson turned increasingly to the depiction of landscapes featuring wild life, an outgrowth of his interest in hunting and fishing, from then on producing a steady and profitable output of etchings and watercolors in this vein. At the request of fellow artist and conservationist Jay Norwood ¿Ding¿ Darling, Benson designed the second Federal Duck Stamp on 1935. Dry Point, 7 x 10 inches

        Englandfahrt Des Bundes Deutscher Gebrauchsgraphiker

Berlin: Erasmusdruck, 1925. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. Portfolio of Bauhaus-style design and fashion graphics, each tipped onto separate page, 1/100cc, this an unnumbered copy, German text captions, German/English preface, colophon page, red and black type, hand-sewn spine, eighteen b/w examples of contemporary distinguished German commercial work which a trip to England hoped would bring orders and business. Examples from graphic art notables Paul Hampel, Hugo Steiner-Prag, Rudolf Koch, Ludwig Hohlwein, C. O. Czeschka, Walter Riemer, Willy Petzhold, and Gerhard Marggraft. Uncommon item. Stamp of the library of previous owner W. S. Crawford on front cover upper right corner, a few light stains and darkening on covers, else a clean copy. W.S. Crawford Ltd, generally known as Crawfords, was one of the most important British advertising agencies of the first half of the 20th century. It was responsible for introducing a highly visual style more influenced by European artistic movements such as modernism and futurism than by traditional hard sell American marketing techniques. The agency owed its success largely to two men, its founder Sir William Crawford and the legendary art director Ashley Havinden. Between them they exerted an enormous influence on British advertising from the early 1920s until the end of the 1950s. According to Wikipedia: William Smith Crawford was one of the first giants of the British advertising industry. Doubtless the Bund of German graphic artists, designers, calligraphers and font developers met with Crawford and his team while in England. A wonderful association.
