1925 NE Telephone and Telegraph Inventory and Property Appraisal w/many Photographs, State of New Hampshire

NE Telephone and Telegraph 1925 - First Edition. An archive of over 110 7 1/2 x 11 inch photographs mounted on linen, and enclosed in a binder with 2 screw posts. The binder is marked "Outside Plant - General Store and Garage Equipment - General Tools and Implements as Included in Inventory and Appraisal of Property New England Telephone and Telegraph Company State of New Hampshire as of April 1, 1925" The first category tab has a stamp on it marked "Exhibit No 14 New England Tel & Tel Co, New Hampshire P.S.C. No D. 964 Witness GK Manson". Major Mason organized the 401st Telegraph Battalion from the NE Tel and Telegraph Company and was involved in analysis of the Transatlantic Cable (see Circuits of Victory by Lavine). An expert in the legal field indicated that this book was 'an exhibit compiled for use in a state rate case - a substantial portion of which consisted of proving that the physical plant included in the company's 'rate base' [on which it was allowed to earn its 'fair return'] was 'used and useful' and fairly valued.' The binder is a fascinating view into the state of the art in telephone/telegraph cabling and the outside plant in 1925. Sections include Pole Lines, Exchange Poles, Toll Poles, Aerial Cable, Exchange Aerial Cable, Toll Aerial Cable, Exch. Aerial Wire, Toll Aerial Wire, UG Conduit, UG Cable, Exch UG Cable, Toll UG Cable, Motor Vehicles (this section empty), Other Accounts, Submarine Cable, GNL Tools and Implements. Each section has large format (7 3/4 x 11") photographs mounted on linen documenting in visual form representative examples of the type of inventory documented in summary form on pages marked (for example) "Exchange Pole Lines Summary - Reproduction Cost - Fully Owned and Jointly Owned". Over 110 photographs total, most with typed explanations of the photograph at the bottom. Possibly a unique survival, archives of this nature are certainly scarce on the market, and worthy of study and preservation. While individual photographs are found occasionally, groupings like this which tell a story larger than the sum of their parts are quite uncommon. A fine addition to any telecommunications collection. Hard Cover. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

- 7. - 16. L'indiscetion (Szenerie ähnlich der Vorherigen). - 17. unbetitelt (2 Kinder ev. in Alpentracht).- 18. Bleistiftstudie eines Kindes. - 19. - 22,-23. weitere Karnevalsszenen in ähnlicher Manier gestaltet. - 24.

        Bronze of an African figure

[Circa 1925]. First. Bronze figure of a dancing African warrior, armed with shield and spear, unsigned and without obvious foundry information. Approximately 28" high by about 12" at the widest point, and basically two-dimensional, that is, about 1/2" at its deepest point. The dore bronze is finished on both sides, indicating that it was meant to be viewed from either side, thus it was probably intended as an architectural element in a frieze or as a room divider, and is not currently free standing (and would probably best be mounted on granite or marble). Weight is about 24 lbs. The muscular, stylized art deco vintage warrior is reminiscent of the portrayal of African natives generally associated with the Cotton Club, that is, both caricaturized and idealized simultaneously, and is possibly an original architectural feature of that or a similarly themed establishment. The expensive casting process almost certainly indicates that few of these were done, and they are commensurately scarce. Shipping at cost. .

Attractive personal photograph album of a voyage to Jamaica, Montego Bay.

Jamaica: c.1925 - Landscape octavo. Contemporary album, textured buff card with matching cord ties, titled "Photos" on the upper panel. Wraps a little rubbed, otherwise very good. 39 original photographs, c.125 × 80 mm), with manuscript captions in white ink. Attractive sequence of well-taken photographs chronicling a pleasure trip out to Jamaica on-board Elders & Fyffe's S.S. Camito, a passenger-carrying banana boat. First images show shipboard life, deck tennis, quoits, and boat drills; a sequence of four pictures covers passage through the Panama canal; which is followed by the main group of views of Jamaica: Kingston Harbour, Fern Gulley, Lucea, Black River, San José - sugar factory, "Nigger Hut" - but the majority showing a variety of locations around Montego Bay, an ox-train, locals collecting brushwood, "Clanside", our party gathered in a Ford Model A. An appealing, but unfortunately anonymous, memento of the early days of tourism in the Caribbean. Built in 1915 by A. Stephens of Glasgow, Camito made regular sailings out of Avonmouth to Jamaica. She was requisitioned during World War II, becoming HMS Camito, an ocean boarding vessel on blockade duties. In May 194, while escorting the captured Italian blockade-runner Sangro, she was sunk off Cape Clear by U-97.

        Caricature portrait of Karel Capek

1925. Pencil on wove paper. Sheet size: 29 × 17.3 cm. Shows signs of having been somewhat crumpled at some point, old soft creases, slight soiling and occasional scuffing of the surface, a few short edge-splits at the top, but overall very good. Window mounted and framed in an ebonized wood Czech Cubist-style frame, UV-resistant glass. Signed by both sitter and artist. Wonderful portrait from life of the great Czechoslovakian writer by that portmanteau nation's finest caricaturist. Commonly characterised as a writer of science fiction - his most famous work is probably The War with the Newts, described by influential critic Darko Suvin as "the pioneer of all anti-fascist and anti-militarist SF" (Smith, Twentieth-century Science Fiction Writers) - Capek's writing is ill-served by such pigeonholing. Arthur Miller, a youthful enthusiast for his work attempted to sum up Capek's unique appeal; "There was no writer like him … prophetic assurance mixed with surrealistic humour and hard-edged social satire: a unique combination … he is a joy to read" (Foreword to Smith, Toward a Radical Center: A Karel Capek Reader). Following the cession of the Sudetenland to Germany in September 1938, Capek, although identified by the Gestapo as an enemy of the Nazi state, refused to go into exile, and suffering from depression he succumbed to pneumonia just a couple of months later. His artist brother, Josef, with whom he had collaborated on a number of projects, was arrested soon after the Nazi invasion and sent to the camps. He died in Bergen-Belsen shortly before the end of the war. The artist Oscar Bergen was trained at the Berlin School of Art, and began his career on Germany, but he fled when Hitler came to power, settling in London where he worked for a number of newspapers and magazines including the Daily Telegraph, the News of the World, and Lilliput. After the war he emigrated to America where he became noted for his "kindly rather than critical" caricatures. A wonderful evocation of one of Czechoslovakia's cultural Golden Ages, but shadowed perhaps by the Age of Iron to come.

Old Ship Figure-Heads and Sterns. ltd ed.

Halton and Truscott Smith, 1925, - LAUGHTON, L.G. Carr. Old Ship Figure-Heads and Sterns with which are associated galleries, hancing-pieces, catheads and divers other matters that concern the "Grace and Countenance" of old Sailing-Ships. L: Halton & Truscott Smith; NY: Minton, Balch & Co., 1925. Pp 281, plates 8-55, frontis., plates 1-7 tipped in within text. 4to, blue cloth, gilt to front and spine, t.e.g. #148 of 1500. "This book has grown so much in the making that its ultimate bulk greatly exceeds what was originally intended. The object proposed was to illustrate systematically the development of ship ornamentation by bringing all available forms of the principal features into their proper sequence. Success in this attempt would show both where ideas and forms originated, and how far the several nations influenced one another. It would also afford a useful guide whenever, as often happens, an unknown ship, whether in a picture or in a model, was to be identified. .The evidence available for the purpose is so vast, and so widespread, that anything like a complete search was clearly impossible. It seemed best therefore to rely chiefly on the English collections and records, using foreign collections as far as possible in order to illustrate the genesis of ideas and the interrelation of forms. .The same limitations of time and space ruled out any attempt at original research into pre-Tudor conditions. The summary of the practice of antiquity and the Middle Ages, though of the shortest, yet is perhaps representative of the known evidence." -from the Preface. Slightly rubbed, else vg. A very nice copy. 700.00 [Attributes: Hard Cover]
