Attractive personal photograph album of a voyage to Jamaica, Montego Bay

Jamaica: , c.1925. Landscape octavo. Contemporary album, textured buff card with matching cord ties, titled "Photos" on the upper panel. 39 original photographs, c.125 × 80 mm), with manuscript captions in white ink. Wraps a little rubbed, otherwise very good. Attractive sequence of well-taken photographs chronicling a pleasure trip out to Jamaica on-board Elders & Fyffe's S.S. Camito, a passenger-carrying banana boat. First images show shipboard life, deck tennis, quoits, and boat drills; a sequence of four pictures covers passage through the Panama canal; which is followed by the main group of views of Jamaica: Kingston Harbour, Fern Gulley, Lucea, Black River, San José - sugar factory, "Nigger Hut" - but the majority showing a variety of locations around Montego Bay, an ox-train, locals collecting brushwood, "Clanside", our party gathered in a Ford Model A. An appealing, but unfortunately anonymous, memento of the early days of tourism in the Caribbean. Built in 1915 by A. Stephens of Glasgow, Camito made regular sailings out of Avonmouth to Jamaica. She was requisitioned during World War II, becoming HMS Camito, an ocean boarding vessel on blockade duties. In May 194, while escorting the captured Italian blockade-runner Sangro, she was sunk off Cape Clear by U-97.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, addressed to the Austrian Composer and Conductor Hans Pless, making mention of his "Macbeth"

[December 28, 1925].. 1925].. Very good. - sc Two pages with over 100 words penned in German on both sides of an 8- 3/8 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide sheet of buff colored paper. The composer's name and address are faintly stamped in light blue at top left of the first page. In his letter addressed to the Austrian composer and conductor Hans Pless, Berg thanks him for his letter and mentions that he is anxious to get to know Pless's Macbeth. The following excerpts are translated from the German Fractur handwriting: "I, too, was sorry that you were not present. It would have meant a great deal to me." Berg is quite probably referring to the premiere of his opera Wozzeck which took place on December 14, 1925, two weeks before the date of this letter. Berg goes on to say, "I am very anxious to get to know your Macbeth. As soon as I come to Vienna and catch my breath after all my unavoidable obligations, we must get together for that wonderful purpose. Or perhaps we will see each other at the Volksoper when you conduct...." Signed "Alban Berg". Folded once horizontally for mailing, there are tiny tears to the edges of the fold. Very good. A member of the Second Viennese School with Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, Alban Berg (1885-1935) was an Austrian composer of 20th century music whose compositions were influenced by the Romanticism of Gustav Mahler and his teacher Arnold Shcoenberg's twelve- tone technique. He is perhaps best remembered for his Violin Concerto and his operas "Wozzeck" and "Lulu", the latter about a prostitute who crosses paths with Jack the Ripper. Although he finished the first 2 acts, Berg died before completing Lulu. The Austrian composer and conductor Hans Pless (1884-1966) collaborated with Daniel Ruyneman in setting up an organization to promote performances of new music in Europe and the US.An English translation of the letter is included.

Devantures Vitrines Installations de Magasins à l'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs Paris 1925 [ 2e series ]

Paris: C. H. Moreau, 1925. First Edition. Boards. Very Good. First Edition. 4 pages (list of plates) + 54 plates (versos blank) illustrated in Heliogravure (black and white). Complete. 13 x 10 inches (oblong folio). Portfolio covers printed paper over boards and thin black cloth spine. Portfolio with worn corners, cover ties lacking, wear at spine with hinges coming apart. The first 4 pages are taped together at the gutter, and are well worn. Several plates have corner creases not extending into the image. Plate one has a short tear in the margins, 2 plates with small corner creases. One plate has overall soiling. Otherwise light occasional soiling throughout. Boards. A portfolio containing 54 black and white heliogravure plates documenting the Storefronts, Display, and Showcases, Installations and other facilities at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs Worlds Fair held in Paris in 1925. A review of OCLC/Worldcat and past dealer offerings finds substantial confusion regarding this title. Issue dates range from 1925 to 1928, and plate counts are either 54 or 60. Page [2] helps sort out the confusion. It notes this portfolio was issued as one part of a collection of 4 titles. The additional 3 titles are "Devantures, Vitrines, Installations de Magasins" 1e [1st series] and a further two with a new title "Nouvelles Devatures et Agencements de Magasins" 3e and 4e [3rd and 4th series]. Based on the context, this portfolio is the 2nd series. The fact that each plate is marked "Devantures et Installations De Magasins - 2e series" and "Helio Faucheux et Fils, Chelles" supports this conclusion. Additionally, the sole copy with the same title offered as of this listing contains 60 plates and lacks the '2e series' notation on the plates (no doubt it is the 1st series). In any event, the portfolio is complete based on the "Table des Planches" on pages [3] and [4]. Scarce in the marketplace and a wonderful piece of documentation from the Art Deco period.

Edward Gillette [1854-1936] was an engineer with the Chicago, Burlington and Chicago Railroad. As engineer he found a much shorter route than the one originally intended for the railroad through Wyoming; thus, saving the railroad a lot of money. Signed presentation from Gillette on the front endpaper: "To Cousin Alvah, who shoots the Big Horn, Edward Gillette." The name of "A.S. Hopkins" in ink on the front pastedown. Also laid in is a 3.5-inch by 5.5-inch portrait photograph of Gillette, which is signed by him in ink on the lower edge of the mount (which has mounting traces on the verso). Also laid in is the front cover of the dust jacket. Pencil notations (by Cousin Alvah?) on pages 137 & 140. Very Good (spine bit dull). Spine of jacket toned, some nicks and chips, a few scuffs to boards, some offsetting to endpapers. First edition, one of 300 copies numbered and signed by the author. With the bookplate of Myrtle A. Crummer. Douglas was almost certainly introduced to the bibliophiles Leroy and Myrtle Crummer (who were busy forming an important medical library) by the publisher Pino Orioli, who ran an antiquarian bookshop by the Ponte Vecchio and later published a number of Douglas's books (see Barbara C. Morden's biography of the painter Dame Laura Knight). "Douglas says in Late Harvest (p. 51) that publishing Experiments "was in itself an experiment, a trying one". It was his first serious attempt at publishing his own work. And in a letter (dated May 30, 1925) to Charles Scott-Moncrieff, he writes: "The printers let me down dreadfully over that book; so that over 60 copies were not fit to send away" (Woolf). This collection of pieces includes Douglas's review of Doughty's Arabia Deserta, an essay on Edgar Allan Poe and a short story entitled "Queer!" a reworking of a story originally composed over twenty years earlier but which had appeared in different guises: as "Something from the Beyond" (1921) and "A Mystery" (1901).

[Manuscript]: A Prophet in his own Country

[No place: no publisher. 1925]. Typed manuscript. 170pp., typed rectos only. Each chapter has been paper-clipped together, separate from the other chapters. Some oxidation from paper clips with some scattered tears and chips throughout, and moderate tears and chips to the final few pages, about near fine. Numerous pencil corrections, although a relatively finished draft. An apparently unpublished novel by William E. Batron about Jesus returning as an American in the early 20th Century. Also included is a good only original mailing envelope addressed to the publisher ("Bobbs Merrill Co.") with a return address that states, "From William E. Barton, Foxboro, Mass." Barton (1861-1930) was a religious scholar and prolific author of national acclaim -- reportedly his entry in the 1930 edition of Who's Who in America was the longest in the book. Today he is best known for his books about Abraham Lincoln and his great collection of Lincoln material, though several of his amusing religious parables have also lately been reprinted. .

The Pixeyites: Original Manuscript and Artwork Satires by James Churchward

(Mount Vernon, New York). (1925-1932). A highly unusual collection of remarkable satirical manuscript stories and hand-painted color illustrations, apparently based on the Niven stones which were pre-Columbian stone tablets bearing indecipherable pictographs and related markings, unearthed in 1921 by the English mineralogist William Niven in the Valley of Mexico. Most of the original 2600 andecite tablets were lost or dispersed and have never been recovered. All that remains are Niven's original rubbings, a selection of which are here stringently reproduced by the British-born writer James Churchward as dramatic figures superimposed upon new landscapes, timelines, and situations, thereby endowing them with a new life of their own. Now, they are "Pixeyites" -- strikingly realized with humor and wit (no doubt inspired by the mythical "Pixies" believed to inhabit neolithic sites in and around Cornwall and Okehampton, Devon, where Chuchward was born). The collection consists of five hand-painted, handwritten, and hand-bound quarto volumes, totaling 272 foliated leaves, and one set of seven original artworks on 9" x 6" sheets. They were created over an eight-year period, during the same time which Churchward won international notoriety for his book The Lost Continent of Mu -- Motherland of Man published in 1926, which he claimed proved the existence of a lost continent in the Pacific Ocean. In that work Churchward presents the controversial theory that a set of ancient tablets which he discovered in India, as well as Niven's set of stone tablets, both originated from the lost, antediluvian civilization of Mu. He claimed Mu was the site of the Garden of Eden and home to an advanced civilization known as the Naacals. Whereas in this and the subsequent books published by Churchward about Mu, he supports his claims with scientific rigor, in The Pixeyites he takes imaginative delight in attacking the scientific establishment of the day by depicting the pre-Columbian symbolical figures as members of the: "Chimalpa Vaudeville Club; composed of members of the Pixey Town Scientific Society."The first volume is comprised of three parts dating from 1925-1927: Atlas and The Glacial Period. A Satire. The next four volumes comprise a four volume set. They are continuously foliated and dated from 1928-1929, with the following sub-titles: Conniption Fit No. 1. Vaudeville A; Conniption Fit No. 1 Vaudeville B; Conniption Fit No. 2. Quakes; Conniption Fit No. 3. Politics. The set of seven related paintings is titled: Sports of the Pixeyites, and is dated from 1932.In his forward to Conniption Fit No. 1. Vaudeville A, Churchward writes: "All of the figures in this satire are exact reproductions of symbolical figures found ... at Chimalpa, Remedios, San Miguel, Amantla, Santiago, Ahuizotla, and other nearby villages from 4 to 6 miles north-west of Mexico City. Not a line had been added or altered in the figures themselves. Here and there I have added something as coming from their mouths and have drawn scenes around many of them suitable to the character given them ..."The mindfulness and skill Churchward employed in recreating the stone symbols, and placing them in a variety of environments (English tea rooms, volcanic landscapes, icy tundra, verdant moorlands) is remarkable: all of the paintings are accomplished and visually striking, many have elaborate ornamental borders in the style of a Persian miniature. The personas given to the figures themselves are rarely laudable. Several are quack scientists with names like "Dr. Bighead," and they are depicted by Churchward in his written satire as espousing illogical arguments, misunderstanding concepts, backbiting, and fighting one another. Churchward insists that these elaborate volumes were never meant for publication, but were created "simply ... to amuse my friends when they visit." As he had clashed with the scientific community, so too do the stark, abstract symbolic figures clash with their lush, formal environments. The resulting aesthetic is whimsical and surreal, bordering on Dada. All five volumes are signed and/or initialed by Churchward throughout, on several of the paintings and illustrated title and half-title pages, and in his introductions and forewords. All are quartos measuring 8" x 10", in painted wraps with quarter cloth backstrips. The Atlas volume has some small holes in the margins of two paintings (not affecting the image), else all five are in fine condition with some light wear and chipping to the edges of the wraps. All of the manuscript leaves were written by Churchward in ink. The set of seven loose artworks are on thick paper sheets measuring 9" x 6". Five are signed, and six have descriptions written by Churchward in pencil on the backs. All seven are in fine condition. These could be rightfully seen as a continuation of the Mu saga, and certainly shed a great deal of light on the puckish humor that Churchward employees towards his critics. The Mu books remained in print for many decades and despite the skepticism they (rightfully) attracted, the saga continues to resonate with seekers of utopias, along with tales of the lost worlds of Atlantis and Shangri-La. These manuscripts seem eminently suitable for publication. .
