        Les Marchandes de Plaisirs

Paris. Limited First Edition. Wraps. Very Good Plus. Scarce collection of watercolors from a now forgotten, or unjustly overlooked, artist who incomparably captures in her paintings the l'esprit of Colette. No copies found on OCLC, notwithstanding this was a limited edition of 500 copies. (This copy is numbered 500.) Also no information on the publisher, suggesting this might have been privately printed. N.d., circa 1925. 33 by 25 cm. 2 pp. preface by Carco, a novelist regarded as the "Last Bohemian", followed by sixteen watercolors, each preceded by a tissue guard containing the title of the painting. Whether or not May Wanda herself felt a connection to Colette is immaterial; in her subject matter, her treatment of her subjects, he economy of line in her portraits, her bold application of color and finally, her straightforward, unblinking honesty, the comparison of the two is inevitable. There are a few men appearing in these paintings, but this is artwork about women, by a woman, from a woman's point-of-view. That point-of-view is both inscrutable and acerbic in its traversal of the frivolous and gaudy aspects of urban life, and there is somehow created a bond between the women living in comfort and luxury and those of meaner circumstance. Here are depicted a woman sitting alone with a glass of wine, a young ingenue on a fashionable boulevard, a flapper behind the wheel of a car, a woman at a pool, sisters in an opera box, smartly dressed women shopping, a woman at a "Bal Musette", etc. Carco likens May Wanda to Toulouse-Lautrec, and that is also an apt comparison in many ways, particularly in the weary enigmatic expressions of many of the women.

Rupert And The Magic Toy Man [SECOND EDITION]

Sampson Low, Marston & Co, London - From the Daily Express Rupert Little Bear Series. Undated but appears to be a Second Edition which was published in 1925, (only distinguished from the first by the lack of illustrated endpapers) with the first three 'Little Bear' Titles to the back board. Please see scans for details of description and email for additional scans. In Paper covered boards with a brown cloth spine - with a colour illustration laid on the front board with its brown bear patterned border. The illustration shows Rupert wearing blue and white talking to the Lizard who is holding a bicycle. Pages printed in blue, red or brown with one illustration to each page. Book - The book has been professionally restored with the text block re-stitched and rebound with plain pastedowns and endpapers in original illustrated paper covered boards. The boards are a little worn to corners and edges and there is some surface rubbing to the front illustration and faint residue of juvenile additions mostly to top and bottom edges. The back board is somewhat grubby and lightly marked but the illustration and lettering remain clear and bright. The text is generally clean and bright with just the very occasional light mark and patch of surface abrasion, where it appears a previous owner was rather enthusiastic when erasing pencil inscriptions. This is especially true of the last page which shows Belinda, Rupert & Susan holding hands and is slightly browned as well as showing the indentations of erased inscriptions. An attractive 2nd edition copy of this early Rupert story. Size: 9.75 inches tall by 7.5 inches. Unpaginated. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 201-750 grams. Category: Fiction; Children.         Jugged Journalism

London: Herbert Jenkins,, 1925. Octavo. Original green cloth, title to boards and spine in black. With the pictorial dust jacket. With 32 illustrations by George Morrow. Mild partial browning to the endpapers, spine just leaning a little but an excellent copy in the slightly nicked and tanned dust jacket. First edition, first impression. Anthony Berkeley Cox wrote numerous and particularly highly regarded works of detective fiction under two pen names: as Anthony Berkeley, he took the British Golden Age detective novel to fresh heights, while as Francis Iles, he was a pioneer of psychological suspense fiction with a seasoning of cynical wit. The pieces gathered together here are examples of his journalistic side. Largely they are concerned with the writing of mystery and detective fiction.

        The Informer

New York, Alfred A. Knopf,, 1925. Octavo. Original black cloth, decorations to upper board and titles to spine in pink, yellow and blue. With the pictorial dust jacket. Housed in a black cloth drop down box with multicolored morocco onlay after the design on the dust jacket. A somewhat disreputable copy, traces of water to boards, and rear endpapers, rear hinge cracked, spine a little dull but nevertheless far better than "good" in tanned and lightly chipped, internally repaired dust jacket. First American Edition, First Printing. With the author's signed full page presentation inscription to the actor and screenwriter Louis Sherwin. Sherwin is remembered for his contemptuous comment about Hollywood, "They know only one word of more than one syllable here and that word is 'fillum'". Ironically, that's how O'Flaherty would have pronounced it too (the characteristic epenthesis apparently retained from the Gaelic). O'Flaherty worked in Hollywood, but The Informer was his first thriller, which proved his greatest popular success. The novel was filmed for the first time in 1929 and again by John Ford in 1935 with Victor MacLaglen in the title role.

Partly-printed AMS, 4pp, 5 3/4" X 9¼", Englewood, NJ, 1913 November 24. Very good. "Who's Who in America" questionnaire, filled out entirely in Stone's hand, starting with full name, occupation, address, birthdate, and going into education, marital status, professional associations, clubs, etc. Most printed questions bear brief responses, and a few (namely military record and list of books written) did not apply and were left blank. Truly unique, a fascinating and exceptionally early biographical record by the future chief justice. Accompanied by a striking 6" X 8" steel engraving of Stone. Fine.

Two Autograph Letters, Signed, to collector Norman James of Baltimore, Maryland, March 30 and April 17, [1925], discussing sporting books and prints, The Natural History of the Ducks, and Phillips' idea for a bibliography of American sporting books

Wenham, Massachusetts, march 30 and april 17, [1925]. 8vo. 1-1/2 pp.; 1 p., pen and ink on Windyknob stationery. Old folds. Fine . To the noted collector of sporting and color-plate books Norman James, of 300 Goodwood Road, Roland Park (see catalogues of his library, sold at Anderson Galleries, November13-23, 1928). From the first letter, dated March 30: "You gave me a wonderful afternoon yesterday and I shall long remember your house and that view - I'm looking over my few prints (about 38) and find the following which I don't remember seeing with you, although most likely you have them stowed away among those we didn't have time for: 'Snipes' drawn by J. Herring - (no date but looks very old); Wild Duck Shooting - A Good Day's Sport' N. Currier 1854 - a very fine one and I've never seen it except this one copy (large) Two figures by L. O. Earll, Pub by A.C. Zink 1880. Man with new breach loader talking to old market hunter with muzzle loader & ducks on back. "Another thing I'd like to see would be a catalogue of the old American books on sport. [Charles] Sheldon and you also would have about all of these, and I have a fair lot, but mine are more along old Am. books on birds and mammals. Guess you think I'm catalogue mad & think I will be by the time I get out the bibliog. for the duck book. - Hope to get away for west end of Alaska Penin in early May." For the privately distributed sets of his monumental Natural History of the Ducks, a finely illustrated work in four volumes, Phillips issued a separately printed Bibliography in an edition of 75 copies. The second letter, dated April 17, begins "I'm proud to think I have one or two American prints that you have not. The only worth while one is the large duck shooting picture -" Phillips also mentions The Natural History of the Ducks: "If you think of any duck 'cranks' who would be worth circularizing for my duck book, I wish you'd let me know -." Phillips did indeed pursue his idea for a catalogue: his Bibliography of American Sporting Books drew upon the library of Charles Sheldon and was published in 1930. It remains an essential reference
