Rozpravy Aventina. List pro kulturu, umeni, kritika a zvlaste literaturu. 1925-34 (all published)

Prague: Aventinum 1925 - Folio 48 x 32 cm, 9 annuals in 7 vols. (all published), 130, 228, 250, 398, 504, 474, 324, 72, 134 pp. A weekly and sometimes biweekly magazine which showcased all the contemporary visual arts, film, music, and literature. with greatest emphasis on the Czechoslovak world but embracing the international scene in a spectacular newspaper format. It is most renowned with the covers of the fifth year by Adolf Hoffmeister, whose caricature portraits of avant-garde luminaries both Czech and abroad have reached greatest exposure and established as cultural icons of the day, but only in the post-communist era. It is now an historical fact that interwar Prague was the most open city of the era, possibly overtaking Paris and New York as a center of discourse and exchange of ideas artistic and political. This weekly magazine included reviews of important exhibitions, interviews with artists and authors, essays on all the artists and richly illustrated with drawings, graphics and photos: a document comprehensive in scope. The contributors over the course of Rozpravy's life read like the full gazetteer of important avant-garde figures in Western and Eastern Europe. Full sets of this journal are very rare, with most libraries holding only incomplete sets. The full set is massive, weighing in at 37 lbs before shipping. Annuals 1-6 in various bindings and overall very good, 7 through 9 are loose and darkened in the center page and good to very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Small, Maynard and Company, Boston 1925 - The author's first book. Dawn Powell almost immediately disavowed this title, she never mentioned it in lists of her works. She later claimed that her second novel, She Walks in Beauty, was her first work. Thirty-six publishers rejected her second novel before it was accepted by Brentano¿s; perhaps this was evidence of the low quality of Whither. A very small run and copies are quite scarce. 305 pages. Lacking the rare dust wrapper. A very nice copy. See picture. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Dollar Diplomacy (First Edition, inscribed by Joseph Freeman to Rex Stout, with a humorous drawing)

B.W. Huebsch and The Viking Press, New York 1925 - First Edition.         Die Erreichbarkeit der Himmelskörper.

      R. Oldenbourg, Munich 1925 - Hohmann, Walter (1880-1945). Die Erreichbarkeit der Himmelskörper. [2], iv, [2], 88pp. Text diagrams. Munich and Berlin: R. Oldenbourg, 1925. 225 x 180 mm. Original tan printed wrappers, light wear at spine. Minor faint foxing, but very good.First Edition, variant with tan printed wrappers (the work was also issued in dark blue wrappers with a pictorial design in white). Hohmann discovered what is now called the "Hohmann transfer orbit," an orbital maneuver using two engine impulses to move a spacecraft between two coplanar orbits. This maneuver, described in Hohmann's Die Erreichbarkeit der Himmelskörper, uses a minimum-energy trajectory consisting of an ellipse tangent to the two orbits; this is the most fuel-efficient path for moving a spacecraft between two different orbits."Walter Hohmann's great contribution to astronautical progress was the discovery of a new use for an old object, the ellipse. However, his involvement in the development of concepts for space travel extended well beyond that discovery: energy and mass requirements; spacecraft design; atmospheric modeling; maneuver analysis; crew safety; extraterrestrial in-situ propellant production, and more. In addition to conducting research, Hohmann belonged to Verein für Raumschiffahrt (Society for Space Travel), or VfR, and participated in its work" (McLaughlin, "Walter Hohmann's roads in space," Journal of Space Mission Architecture (Fall 2000): 1-14.         The Autobiography of a Crook

New York, Lincoln MacVeagh, The Dial Press, , 1925. From Material supplied by Netley Lucas. Octavo, original terracotta quarter cloth on patterned boards, title gilt to the spine, brown top-stain. In the dust jacket. Very light toning, else an excellent copy in the extremely uncommon typographical jacket. First US edition, from the UK sheets with a cancel title, issued in the Dial's Rogue's Library series. Ghosted autobiography of the fraudster and conman Netley Lucas. Lucas was expelled from school at 14 for stealing and forging his housemaster's signature; imprisoned in Brixton at 17 for obtaining money under false pretences; in the early 20s he cut a swathe of fraud across southern England in the guise of Capt. Lucas R. N. and the Hon. Netley Lucas; and in 1928 achieved notoriety on the other side of the Atlantic as the consort of 'Chicago May' Churchill. Lucas made a tidy living publishing articles, many of them directly plagiarized, on crime and low-life in a wide-range of periodicals, and for a few years caused a sensation with his pseudonymously published, and largely plagiarized "authorized" lives of Queen Mary, the Prince of Wales, and the Pope. He was finally caught out having sold the rights to a copied life of George V to Macmillan, and was sentenced to 18 months hard labour. He died, aged 37, in 1940. A superb copy of this "Stirring human document … Villainy, sentimentalism, pluck, dishonor, all mixed together" (jacket blurb).

For Cocteau, the Angel Heurtebise was both his guardian and a demon; written during a feverish period of seven days, this is one of his best known poems "...Your beauty, angel of white lead, Caught in a photograph by an Explosion of magnesium." (from an English translation) Jean Cocteau collaborated on many photographically illustrated editions, this was the first. This photogravure from a Rayogram is one of Man Ray's most subtle and beautiful. Additionally, this copy is SIGNED by Cocteau with his customary five point star and the following, "Viens au ralenti folle etoile" (slow down crazy star).
