Photo Album - China Via SS Mongolia

Peking, 1925. Peking (Beijing), circa 1925. Album of photographs from a voyage to China on the SS Mongolia, featuring iconic scenes and uncommon snapshots of Chinese civilians engaged in their customary roles. Contains 41 photographs mounted with corners onto taupe cardstock leaves, including 2 large photographs by White Brothers. Oblong 8vo. string-tied album measuring approximately 31 x 25 cm, original brown boards made by J Harris & Co of London, for P & O for the traveller, with embossed dedication by the navigation company and a unique embossed crest to front. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 13.5 x 8 cm, and the largest 23.5 x 16.5 cm. Small chips to extremities of boards, otherwise in Very Good Condition, excellent crisp images. Contemporary to the formation and dominance of the Communist Party of China, these photographs are centered in and around Peking and were taken in an unsettled period for China. Despite the times, the foreigner managed to capture some excellent scenes. Chinese men and women are toiling at a factory, sorting and spinning cotton, practicing acrobatics, and the like. A man is photographed in a riverboat filled with several cormorant birds for fishing; another rests in front of his merchant shop; others travel together in a camel caravan; and an enormous decorated vessel transports timber into a harbour. Other highlights are the images of structures and monuments reminiscent of the longstanding powerful and ancient Great Ming Empire, the last dynasty in China ruled by ethnic Han Chinese , described by some as "one of the greatest eras of orderly government and social stability in human history." The traveller is seen in one photograph, posing with a mule in front of one of the statues leading to the Ming Tombs in order to illustrate its grandeur. Other views include: • Statues on the road to the Ming Dynasty Tombs (copyrighted photograph by the White Brothers) • The Great Wall of China • The Temple of the Reclining Buddha • Sky scraping pagodas and immense stone gates • Ancient seal script carved on stone - a Nestorian stele • The Imperial Altar of Earth and Harvest • A distant view of Jade Peak Pagoda in the grounds of the Summer Palace. • A covered stone monument on the banks of a river • The Lingxing Gates to the Circular Mound Altar at the Temple of Heaven • The exquisite stone relief dragon scene on the entrance steps of the Hall of Preserving Harmony in the court of the Forbidden City • Coal Hill (Jingshan Park), formerly a private imperial garden attached to the grounds of the Forbidden City and situated immediately north of it. [The grounds were opened to the public in 1928.] SS Mongolia (1922) was a steam turbine-driven twin-screw passenger-and-cargo ocean liner launched in 1922 for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) for service from the United Kingdom to Australia. Her sister ship was SS Manchuria. For most of her career she plied the India-China-Australia route. Later she was renamed the SS Europa and sailed around New Zealand and then as a cruise ship in the Caribbean. She was scrapped in 1963. White Brothers - The photographers of the copyrighted photograph are twin brothers born in Cooranbong, New South Wales, Australia, Herbert Clarence White (1896-1962) and James Henry White (1896-1954), sons of William C. White who in 1894 led the Australian Union, and his wife Ethel May (née Lacey) of Tasmania. When the twins were four years of age the family returned to California, being largely influenced by their grandparents, Ellen G. White and James White - founders of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church - especially Mrs. Ellen White who inspired and facilitated their careers in publishing and photography very early on. Having grown up in St. Helena, California, next to their grandmother Ellen G. White's Elmshaven home, and with equipment provided by her, together Herbert and James operated a print shop they called "The Elmshaven Press." Their endeavours taught them the printing trade and also paid for their academy and college. Upon entering college they moved their operation to Angwin, where it eventually became the Pacific Union College Press. Seemingly inseparable, both men lived and worked for several years in China, in missions, photography and publishing. James was a missionary in northern China, serving with his wife Margaret from 1921 to 1929. He also became a professional photographer in this time, travelling through China with his brother. Herbert arrived in China two years later than James, and managed the "Signs of the Time" publishing house in Shanghai, China, from 1923 to 1929. During this time he, too, became a professional photographer. In later years he made public lectures and operated his own business H.C. White Publications in Riverside, California. Together they published the following photographic work before leaving China: "Romantic China: An album containing forty-two photographic studies of China's historic monuments and charming beauty spots complete with descriptive and historical notes," Shanghai: Browhite Arts, 1930. Herbert earlier published, "Peking the Beautiful: comprising seventy photographic studies of the celebrated monuments of China's northern capital and its environs complete with descriptive and historical notes. With an Introduction by Hu Shih, former professor of philosophy at the National University of Peking." Shanghai: Commercial Press, 1927.. Very Good.

Tipped-in to this first edition is an autograph quotation by Mascagni of four measures on musical stave from the famous Intermezzo. On the verso is a note with musical annotation from Hermann Leopoldi dated "Brünn, 24 II 1926." Some wear to edges of binding, two pages loose and glue back in at an early date.PROVENANCE: J. On the verso is a note with musical annotation from Hermann Leopoldi dated "Brünn, 24 II 1926." Some wear to edges of binding, two pages loose and glue back in at an early date. PROVENANCE: J. Borowsky with his signature on front fly-leaf and in a few places throughout the volume. Fuld 301-302.

1925. VAN VECHTEN, Carl. A Collection of 429 Original Photographs. 132 x 85mm. Laid into an album. Various places and dates. The William Earl Collection of Photographs by Carl Van Vechten. A collection of 4291 original photographs by Carl Van Vechten of which 391 are portraits and 38 are of of miscellaneous subjects, including a few unidentified portraits, with Van Vechten's blind stamp in the margins. As was often the case with Van Vechten's photographs the majority were printed on postcard stock. The collection comes from the dancer William Earl, a friend of Van Vechten's, and the majority of the photographs are annotated on the verso by Van Vechten, and some are also inscribed by him to Earl. Carl Van Vechten was an important figure in the cultural life of America during the first half of the twentieth century. He first made his mark as a music critic for the New York Times, but was also a prolific novelist and literary critic. In the early 1930s Miguel Covarrubias introduced Van Vechten to the 35 mm Leica camera, and he began photographing his large circle of friends and acquaintances. His earlier career as a writer and his wife's experience as an actress provided him with access to both fledgling artists and established cultural figures of the time. Van Vechten's portraits are frequently busts or half-length poses in front of bold backdrops. Dancers were usually photographed on stage. Van Vechten did his own darkroom work, but frequently used an assistant to help set up lights for portrait sittings. According to Davis "his work constitutes the single most integrated vision of American arts and letters produced in his era". Among the subjects who he photographed represented in this collection are: Alvin Ailey, Judith Anderson, Pearl Bailey, Harry Belafonte, Baroness Blixen (Isak Dinesen), Marlon Brando, Dave Brubeck, Truman Capote, Carol Channing, Marc Chagall, Diahann Carroll, William Faulkner, Ben Gazzara, Dizzy Gillespie, Reri Grist, Julie Harris, Melissa Hayden, Al Hirschfield, Geoffrey Holder, Lena Horne, Kim Hunter, Burl Ives, Eartha Kitt, Hugh Laing, Joe Louis, Alicia Markova, Robert Morse, Eugene O'Neill, Laurence Olivier, Leontyne Price, Vincent Price, Ned Rorem, Bobby Short, Simone Signoret, Gertrude Stein, Paul Taylor, Alice B. Toklas, Ethel Waters and George Zoritch. As a major champion of African-American culture and patron of many of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance, it is not surprising that many of his subjects were African-American, and this collection has a fair representation of African American subjects. Van Vechten was also a lover of dance, and this collection contains many photographs of some of the leading dancers of the twentieth century including significant groups of Alicia Markova(68), Melissa Hayden(20), and Hugh Laing(76). Keith F.Davis. The Passionate Observer. Photographs of Carl Van Vechten. Plates 38 and 55. Also variants of plates 45,46 and 102.
