        Cavalleria Rusticana

1925. MASCAGNI, Pietro. Cavalleria Rusticana. Melodramma in un Atto di G. Targioni-Tozzetti e G. Menasci. Riduzione per Canto e Pianoforte di Leopoldo Mugnone. XVI, 168 pp. Plate number 492 throughout. Folio, 307 x 230 mm., bound in contemporary Italian half brown morocco, matching marbled paper over boards. Milano: Edoardo Sonzogno, 1890. _____. PLUS: One page ALS, 118 x 174 mm, on thick, smooth paper, signed "PMascagni" and dated "Brünn, 2 Febbraio 1925." |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of the piano vocal score. Considered one of the classic "verismo" operas, Cavalleria premiered on May 17, 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, where the composer received an inconceivable 40 curtain calls. The opera was written by a 25 year old Mascagni in eight days. Today the opera is most frequently performed in tandem with Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. In the 1890s both Cavalleria and Pagliacci were thought to represent something quite modern, with noble and powerful emotions given to low-borne characters (con suprema passione) in settings which were both naturalistic and contemporary. A highlight of the opera has always been the Intermezzo, performed between the two scenes of the opera, while the stage remains empty. Tipped-in to this first edition is an autograph quotation by Mascagni of four measures on musical stave from the famous Intermezzo. On the verso is a note with musical annotation from Hermann Leopoldi dated "Brünn, 24 II 1926." Some wear to edges of binding, two pages loose and glue back in at an early date. PROVENANCE: J. Borowsky with his signature on front fly-leaf and in a few places throughout the volume. Fuld 301-302.

1925. VAN VECHTEN, Carl. A Collection of 429 Original Photographs. 132 x 85mm. Laid into an album. Various places and dates. The William Earl Collection of Photographs by Carl Van Vechten. A collection of 4291 original photographs by Carl Van Vechten of which 391 are portraits and 38 are of of miscellaneous subjects, including a few unidentified portraits, with Van Vechten's blind stamp in the margins. As was often the case with Van Vechten's photographs the majority were printed on postcard stock. The collection comes from the dancer William Earl, a friend of Van Vechten's, and the majority of the photographs are annotated on the verso by Van Vechten, and some are also inscribed by him to Earl. Carl Van Vechten was an important figure in the cultural life of America during the first half of the twentieth century. He first made his mark as a music critic for the New York Times, but was also a prolific novelist and literary critic. In the early 1930s Miguel Covarrubias introduced Van Vechten to the 35 mm Leica camera, and he began photographing his large circle of friends and acquaintances. His earlier career as a writer and his wife's experience as an actress provided him with access to both fledgling artists and established cultural figures of the time. Van Vechten's portraits are frequently busts or half-length poses in front of bold backdrops. Dancers were usually photographed on stage. Van Vechten did his own darkroom work, but frequently used an assistant to help set up lights for portrait sittings. According to Davis "his work constitutes the single most integrated vision of American arts and letters produced in his era". Among the subjects who he photographed represented in this collection are: Alvin Ailey, Judith Anderson, Pearl Bailey, Harry Belafonte, Baroness Blixen (Isak Dinesen), Marlon Brando, Dave Brubeck, Truman Capote, Carol Channing, Marc Chagall, Diahann Carroll, William Faulkner, Ben Gazzara, Dizzy Gillespie, Reri Grist, Julie Harris, Melissa Hayden, Al Hirschfield, Geoffrey Holder, Lena Horne, Kim Hunter, Burl Ives, Eartha Kitt, Hugh Laing, Joe Louis, Alicia Markova, Robert Morse, Eugene O'Neill, Laurence Olivier, Leontyne Price, Vincent Price, Ned Rorem, Bobby Short, Simone Signoret, Gertrude Stein, Paul Taylor, Alice B. Toklas, Ethel Waters and George Zoritch. As a major champion of African-American culture and patron of many of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance, it is not surprising that many of his subjects were African-American, and this collection has a fair representation of African American subjects. Van Vechten was also a lover of dance, and this collection contains many photographs of some of the leading dancers of the twentieth century including significant groups of Alicia Markova(68), Melissa Hayden(20), and Hugh Laing(76). Keith F.Davis. The Passionate Observer. Photographs of Carl Van Vechten. Plates 38 and 55. Also variants of plates 45,46 and 102.

Attractive personal photograph album of a voyage to Jamaica, Montego Bay

Jamaica: , c.1925. Landscape octavo. Contemporary album, textured buff card with matching cord ties, titled "Photos" on the upper panel. 39 original photographs, c.125 × 80 mm), with manuscript captions in white ink. Wraps a little rubbed, otherwise very good. Attractive sequence of well-taken photographs chronicling a pleasure trip out to Jamaica on-board Elders & Fyffe's S.S. Camito, a passenger-carrying banana boat. First images show shipboard life, deck tennis, quoits, and boat drills; a sequence of four pictures covers passage through the Panama canal; which is followed by the main group of views of Jamaica: Kingston Harbour, Fern Gulley, Lucea, Black River, San José - sugar factory, "Nigger Hut" - but the majority showing a variety of locations around Montego Bay, an ox-train, locals collecting brushwood, "Clanside", our party gathered in a Ford Model A. An appealing, but unfortunately anonymous, memento of the early days of tourism in the Caribbean. Built in 1915 by A. Stephens of Glasgow, Camito made regular sailings out of Avonmouth to Jamaica. She was requisitioned during World War II, becoming HMS Camito, an ocean boarding vessel on blockade duties. In May 194, while escorting the captured Italian blockade-runner Sangro, she was sunk off Cape Clear by U-97.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, addressed to the Austrian Composer and Conductor Hans Pless, making mention of his "Macbeth"

[December 28, 1925].. 1925].. Very good. - sc Two pages with over 100 words penned in German on both sides of an 8- 3/8 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide sheet of buff colored paper. The composer's name and address are faintly stamped in light blue at top left of the first page. In his letter addressed to the Austrian composer and conductor Hans Pless, Berg thanks him for his letter and mentions that he is anxious to get to know Pless's Macbeth. The following excerpts are translated from the German Fractur handwriting: "I, too, was sorry that you were not present. It would have meant a great deal to me." Berg is quite probably referring to the premiere of his opera Wozzeck which took place on December 14, 1925, two weeks before the date of this letter. Berg goes on to say, "I am very anxious to get to know your Macbeth. As soon as I come to Vienna and catch my breath after all my unavoidable obligations, we must get together for that wonderful purpose. Or perhaps we will see each other at the Volksoper when you conduct...." Signed "Alban Berg". Folded once horizontally for mailing, there are tiny tears to the edges of the fold. Very good. A member of the Second Viennese School with Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, Alban Berg (1885-1935) was an Austrian composer of 20th century music whose compositions were influenced by the Romanticism of Gustav Mahler and his teacher Arnold Shcoenberg's twelve- tone technique. He is perhaps best remembered for his Violin Concerto and his operas "Wozzeck" and "Lulu", the latter about a prostitute who crosses paths with Jack the Ripper. Although he finished the first 2 acts, Berg died before completing Lulu. The Austrian composer and conductor Hans Pless (1884-1966) collaborated with Daniel Ruyneman in setting up an organization to promote performances of new music in Europe and the US.An English translation of the letter is included.

Devantures Vitrines Installations de Magasins à l'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs Paris 1925 [ 2e series ]

Paris: C. H. Moreau, 1925. First Edition. Boards. Very Good. First Edition. 4 pages (list of plates) + 54 plates (versos blank) illustrated in Heliogravure (black and white). Complete. 13 x 10 inches (oblong folio). Portfolio covers printed paper over boards and thin black cloth spine. Portfolio with worn corners, cover ties lacking, wear at spine with hinges coming apart. The first 4 pages are taped together at the gutter, and are well worn. Several plates have corner creases not extending into the image. Plate one has a short tear in the margins, 2 plates with small corner creases. One plate has overall soiling. Otherwise light occasional soiling throughout. Boards. A portfolio containing 54 black and white heliogravure plates documenting the Storefronts, Display, and Showcases, Installations and other facilities at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs Worlds Fair held in Paris in 1925. A review of OCLC/Worldcat and past dealer offerings finds substantial confusion regarding this title. Issue dates range from 1925 to 1928, and plate counts are either 54 or 60. Page [2] helps sort out the confusion. It notes this portfolio was issued as one part of a collection of 4 titles. The additional 3 titles are "Devantures, Vitrines, Installations de Magasins" 1e [1st series] and a further two with a new title "Nouvelles Devatures et Agencements de Magasins" 3e and 4e [3rd and 4th series]. Based on the context, this portfolio is the 2nd series. The fact that each plate is marked "Devantures et Installations De Magasins - 2e series" and "Helio Faucheux et Fils, Chelles" supports this conclusion. Additionally, the sole copy with the same title offered as of this listing contains 60 plates and lacks the '2e series' notation on the plates (no doubt it is the 1st series). In any event, the portfolio is complete based on the "Table des Planches" on pages [3] and [4]. Scarce in the marketplace and a wonderful piece of documentation from the Art Deco period.

        When We Were Very Young

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd.,, 1925. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Octavo. Publisher's deluxe green calf, titles to spine and pictorial design to front board gilt, pictorial endpapers, all edges gilt, green silk bookmark. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper and a black circular ink stamp to title page. Spine ends and corners lightly rubbed, endpapers foxed, occasional spotting to margins of text block. An excellent copy. First deluxe issue (seventh edition overall). The first of the books to be bound in deluxe leather by Methuen, this is an extremely rare edition. No deluxe edition was planned when the book was originally published; it was only later, when Winnie-the-Pooh appeared, that Methuen decided to publish deluxe editions of all the Pooh books, including When We Were Very Young. For this reason it is the only one of the deluxe editions that is not also a first edition.

1925. GILLETTE, Edward. LOCATING THE IRON TRAIL. Boston: The Christopher Publishing House, [1925]. 8vo., blue cloth stamped in gilt. First Edition- all plates are present. Edward Gillette [1854-1936] was an engineer with the Chicago, Burlington and Chicago Railroad. As engineer he found a much shorter route than the one originally intended for the railroad through Wyoming; thus, saving the railroad a lot of money. He was hoping the railroad would show its appreciation with a nice financial bonus and, indeed, the railroad did reward him but by naming the town of Gillette, west of the Black Hills in northern Wyoming, after him in 1891. Signed presentation from Gillette on the front endpaper: "To Cousin Alvah, who shoots the Big Horn, Edward Gillette." The name of "A.S. Hopkins" in ink on the front pastedown. Also laid in is a 3.5-inch by 5.5-inch portrait photograph of Gillette, which is signed by him in ink on the lower edge of the mount (which has mounting traces on the verso). Also laid in is the front cover of the dust jacket. Pencil notations (by Cousin Alvah?) on pages 137 & 140. Very Good (spine bit dull). A very scarce book, especially when signed by the author!! $1,500.00.
