        The Great Gatsby

New York: Charles Scribners, 1925. First edition, first state with "chatter" p.60, "northern" p.119, "sick in tired" p.205, and "Union Street station" p. 211. Octavo, original dark green cloth. In near fine condition, with the gilt lettering to the spine bright. An very nice example. In 1922, Fitzgerald announced his decision to write "something new--something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." That extraordinary, beautiful, intricately patterned, and above all, simple novel became The Great Gatsby, arguably Fitzgerald's finest work and certainly the book for which he is best known. A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, Gatsby captured the spirit of the author's generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Cyril Connolly called The Great Gatsby one of the half dozen best American novels: "Gatsby remains a prose poem of delight and sadness which has by now introduced two generations to the romance of America, as Huckleberry Finn and Leaves of Grass introduced those before it" (Modern Movement 48).

First English Edition, published one day after the American first trade edition. This was Conrad's last novel, a Napoleonic tale left unfinished at his death in 1924.         Paint sample book

1925. PAINT SAMPLES. Salesmen's Reference Book: The Tropical Paint & Oil Company. George C. Hascall, proprietor. 131, [1] pp. Illustrated with 232 coloured paint samples and numerous black and white photographs, plus 118 facsimiles of endorsement letters. 4to., 287 x 215 mm, bound in original brown faux-leather binder embossed in gold, with bolts. Cleveland, OH: Tropical Paint Co., [ca. 1925]. |~||~||~||~| First Edition of this scarce Jazz Age trade catalogue providing an invaluable guide for the paint colours of amusement parks, bakeries, banks, bathrooms, brick surfaces, bridges, canneries, candy manufacturers, automobiles, colleges, factories, fire hydrants, homes, kitchens, machinery, roofs, swimming pools, roofs, and much more. This detailed sales reference includes illustrations of factories, roller coasters, residences, lumber mills, schools, restaurants, and even the flatbed truck carrying the Tropical Paint cans. The original colour samples of house paints, railroad colours, flat, gloss, floor paints & stains, cement coats, and enamels for houses, automobiles, railroad cars, industrial machinery, floors, furniture, and others have remained very true. Of particular interest are the large number of glowing endorsement letters on their respective Company letterheads extolling the virtues of Tropical Paint brands. George Hascall (1852-1927) originally worked as a salesman in the oil business, then set up as a broker for the oil business in Cleveland in 1884 and launched his own oil and paint company in 1889. He took over Tropical Oil Company in 1903, which was then a very small manufacturer of oil paints and heating oil, and within a few years had vastly expanded the plant and operations, maintaining a large sales force across the country of over 40 agents, and adding to his other companies which included the Hascall Paint Company, Prairie City Oil Company, Atlantic Paint Company, and the Hascall-Smith Furniture Company. Spine rubbed else in very good condition with the samples intact.

La Sainte Vierge'. Manuscript of an unrecorded poem, written in Jean Cocteau's hand.

Ca 1925 - Manuscript, unpublished poem by the French author and artist Jean Cocteau, written in his hand. Cocteau, raised as a Catholic, had fallen away from the faith, but in 1925 came back to the Church, taking the sacraments for the first time during the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The symbol of the sacred or red heart was very important to Cocteau during his re- conversion, and appears in this poem ("son coeur rouge et or"). Cocteau had an opium addiction at the time, and tried to effect a cure at a French convalescent home in Villefranche-sur-Mer, where he wrote about the existence of God. He was often seen in the town in an ecstatic trance before a statue of the Virgin.Cocteau's poem concludes with a charming image of the Virgin Mary and the gift of her red and gold heart to little girls: "La Sainte Vierge se penche elle donne- a chaque petite fille son coeur rouge et or- livre de Prix"With the original sales receipt from ABAA dealer Emily Driscoll Autographs and Manuscripts, New York, NY. Dated 1957, identifying the poem as item 132 from Catalog #16. The receipt prices the poem at $10, an appropriate price at the time.Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) was a French poet, novelist, playwright, visual artist, and film director, considered one of the most creative, diversified artists of the twentieth century. The poem written in ink on watermarked tissue paper, not folded, evenly toned, perfectly legible. 8 x 10 1/2". The dealer sales receipt with slight loss at top edge, slightly marked, 8 1/2 x 7". Poem not recorded in OCLC.

        Wild Harvest

NY: D. Appleton. 1925. The Cherokee author's first book. One of the two most important debuts of modern Native American writers, the other being D'Arcy McNickle's book The Surrounded, in 1936. This one, however, preceding McNickle's book as it does by over a decade, may rightfully be called the first Native American novel of the modern era. Signed by Oskison. A small amount of foxing to the book, and some general, modest signs of wear to the cloth; a very good copy, lacking the scarce dust jacket. A landmark volume, seldom encountered at all, let alone signed. First Edition. Hardcover.

In the Land of the Shah - Being a Series of Announcements Issued by the British Petroleum Co. Ltd. from Britannic House, Moorgate, London E.C. 2

London: British Petroleum Co. Ltd, Distributing Organisation of the Anglo Persian Oil Co. Ltd., n.d. , 1925. Folio (440 × 298 mm) Original buff printed, yapp-edged, light card wraps. 12 finely-printed monochrome lithographic plates (c. 155 × 200 mm), imposed within a "plate-mark" above descriptive text. Staples a touch rusted, a few minor splits to the edges of the wraps, a scatter of foxing throughout, but overall very good indeed. First and only edition, extremely uncommon, no other copies traced either institutionally or commercially. Evidently these "announcements" were in fact rather grand advertisements for BP, which were gathered together and presented even more grandly still. Publication was noted at the time in the "Wheels of Industry" column of The Commercial Motor, the journal of the commercial vehicle industry; "An extremely beautiful production entitled "In the Land of the Shah" has been issued by the British Petroleum Co., Ltd. which is the distributing organisation of the Anglo-Persian Oil Co., Ltd. The publication forms a portfolio of some of the company's announcements which have appeared in the Press, but that Statement by no means does justice to it, for the " announcements " took the form of delightful drawings of Eastern life, commerce, and customs by Christopher Clark, R.I., and they are reproduced on special paper, so that the impression given is almost that of steel engravings. Each drawing is accompanied by some interesting text. The portfolio is one of those productions that most men will take home. We believe that a copy will be sent to any reader who mentions The Commercial Motor" (The Commercial Motor, 17 November 1925). The images range from the ancient historical - "A Temple of the Fire Worshippers", "The Glories of Ancient Persia", "The Tomb of Khusru Pharviz" - to the contemporary industrial - "Transporting Pipe Line in Persia", on mule back, "150 Miles of Pipe Lines" - via picturesque travelogue - "Ferry-Boats of the Tigris", pitch waterproofed gufas, "A Persian Wedding", as described by Sir Percy Sykes, "A Land of Leisurely Travel", a heavily laden camel caravan. Evocative artwork by Christopher Clark, a British commercial artist-illustrator best remembered for his work for British Railways, often featuring scenes of British pageantry. Fascinating early piece of promotional literature for the burgeoning oil industry. Sheet of British Petroleum Company stationery with roneoed compliments message loosely inserted.
