'La Sainte Vierge'. Manuscript of an unrecorded poem, written in Jean Cocteau's hand

Ca. 1925.. Very good condition. Manuscript, unpublished poem by the French author and artist Jean Cocteau, written in his hand. Cocteau, raised as a Catholic, had fallen away from the faith, but in 1925 came back to the Church, taking the sacraments for the first time during the Feast of the Sacred Heart. The symbol of the sacred or red heart was very important to Cocteau during his re- conversion, and appears in this poem ("son coeur rouge et or"). Cocteau had an opium addiction at the time, and tried to effect a cure at a French convalescent home in Villefranche-sur-Mer, where he wrote about the existence of God. He was often seen in the town in an ecstatic trance before a statue of the Virgin. Cocteau's poem concludes with a charming image of the Virgin Mary and the gift of her red and gold heart to little girls: "La Sainte Vierge se penche elle donne- a chaque petite fille son coeur rouge et or- livre de Prix" With the original sales receipt from ABAA dealer Emily Driscoll Autographs and Manuscripts, New York, NY. Dated 1957, identifying the poem as item 132 from Catalog #16. The receipt prices the poem at $10, an appropriate price at the time. Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) was a French poet, novelist, playwright, visual artist, and film director, considered one of the most creative, diversified artists of the twentieth century. The poem written in ink on watermarked tissue paper, not folded, evenly toned, perfectly legible. 8 x 10 1/2". The dealer sales receipt with slight loss at top edge, slightly marked, 8 1/2 x 7". Poem not recorded in OCLC.

The Writings of William Blake. Edited in Three Volumes by Geoffrey Keynes.

London Nonesuch Press 1925 - Three quarto volumes. xviii, 364; vii, 397; vii, 430pp. One of 1,500 copies printed on handmade paper. The complete text of Blake's known writings, along with the variant readings. With a photogravure frontispiece of Blake's death mask by Emery Walker and sixty collotype plates of Blake's drawings and paintings to illustrate the poems. In A History of the Nonesuch Press, John Dreyfus writes that Francis Meynell regarded this set "as one of the two 'most useful and generally creditable of Nonesuch publications' -- the other being the seven-volume Shakespeare which came later." Bound in quarter vellum and marbled paper, gilt-titled to spines. This copy has been protected in plain dust wrappers printed with "Blake" and the volume numerals to the spines. Corners slightly bumped, dust wrappers lightly toned to spines, and with a few spots to the front panel of the dust wrapper of volume one, else a fine set. A pencil note to the front endpaper inscribed by the legendary bookseller Herman Cohen of the Chiswick Book Shop indicates that this is the only dust wrapper he had ever seen on this set; no indication of dust wrappers is recorded in the Nonesuch bibliography. Below the note, Cohen has written, "Bruce Rogers's best friend in England." The front past-down of each volume bears the bookplate of A. T. Bartholomew, noted Cambridge University librarian and bibliographer, and close friend of both Geoffrey Keynes and Bruce Rogers. (Dreyfus 24, p. 30). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

As soon as it is known, I'll present your candidature to Rosenthal and shall, of course, support it. It's impossible to proceed otherwise just now.""I've explained how matters stand both to Leo and to Einstein, who has spoken to me about this. I have only limited influence in this Institute, which is getting its entire financial support from the American doctors, and any precipitate step on my part might spoil the chances of success. As soon as the director of the Institute is appointed, I'll be able to approach him.""I'm leaving for America on Wednesday and hope to make final arrangements there regarding the director; I shall then be able to take further steps. With my best wishes for your health andf warm greetings.""After being engaged to Sophia Sonia Getzova (1872-1946) for four years (1898-1901), Chaim Weizmann broke the engagement, and in 1906, after a five year engagement, he married Vera Chatzmann.       London: Elkin Mathews Ltd., 1925. Octavo. (xii), 57pp. One of twenty-five copies printed on Japanese vellum and signed by the translator, H.V. Marrot, who was the director of Elkin Matthews Ltd. This copy bears a lengthy inscription by Marrot to the English piano composer, Kaikhosru Sorabji. Dated 16 December, 1925, Marrot writes of his pleasure in finding this book on Sorabji's shelf and praises him as an "exceptional auditor...for any writer on printing whose treatment of his subject is aesthetic rather than technical." Indeed, such a distinction appears to have been the guiding principle behind this, the first translation of Bodoni's preface into English. Marrot alludes to this in the Translator's Preface. He also acknowledges the assistance of Stanley Morison in this endeavor. Faint edgewear, slight bowing to covers, else fine in original decorated paper-covered boards.

Also Dulac reveals in a reply to a Mr. Carroll of Massachusetts who hoped to buy one of the ‘Pearl’ illustrations that Mr. Rosenthal also purchased the copyright to the 10 pictures. However Mr. Rosenthal did allow his book with Dulac pictures and in English translation to be published in England by The Nisbet Publishing House The English edition, although praised by The Times Literary critic as Dulac ‘at his best’ and ‘fantastically Persian,’ was not a commercial success. In order to make use of the 775 sheets remaining from 1,550 printed for the English edition, arrangements were made in 1925 to market an edition through Brentano’s, booksellers in New York The ‘Pearl’ pictures indeed display a ripening of a Dulac style first seen in Sindbad the Sailor, employed in some of his Fairy Book pictures and developed fully in The Tanglewood Tales. It is a Persian miniature style, but made quite his own His plates, truly genius, do much to bring a fanciful touch to the otherwise stark exposition of a treatise on pearls" (Hughey).Hughey 54d.

Photo Album - Large Format - Loening Arctic Amphibian Planes Used for the MacMillan Arctic Expedition

Alaska 1925 - Anacostia Naval Station, San Diego Naval Station, Alaska, 1925-1926. Album of large professional press photographs of the Loening Amphibian Planes used for the 1925 MacMillan Arctic Expedition, and also for the Alaskan Aerial Survey Expedition. Contains 23 photographs, some with embedded captions or photographer's stamp, mounted with corners onto black cardstock leaves. All large print format, photographs vary slightly in size, measuring from approximately 22 x 16,5 cm to approximately 25 x 20 cm. With a typescript note addressed to unidentified media personnel regarding appropriate attribution for the photographs. Oblong Folio album measuring approximately 37 x 28 cm, black paper boards. Boards bowed and chipped at extremities, otherwise in Very Good Condition, excellent photographs. Superb large photographs exhibit the unique features of the amphibious aircraft built by Loening Aeronautical Engineering Corporation of New York, while recording the first successful American aerial Arctic exploration, and the subsequent large scale survey which would dramatically augment Alaska's principle industries by applying aviation. 1925 MacMillan Arctic Expedition (12 Photographs) Led by Commander Donald Baxter MacMillan, who was accompanied by Richard E. Byrd, this joint expedition, sponsored by National Geographic, would prove to be the first productive use of aircraft in arctic regions by Americans, and would earn Byrd a leading reputation in polar aviation. The American made amphibian aircraft, however, is the focus of this album, the first being a view of the model OL-1 A-6879, taken by at the Anacostia Naval Station in D.C. on 14 May 1925 by Pacific and Atlantic Photographs Inc. of New York City (P & A Photo). Striking views of the airplane are captioned 9 May 1925, and after being tested at sea, two show images the aircraft being hoisted onto MacMillan's Polar steamship 'Peary' for the north bound voyage. This series concludes with the steamer Peary photographed in icy waters, appearing rather dwarfed alongside a sizeable wall of jagged ice. Donald MacMillan was a pioneer in experimenting with technology that would eventually change life in the Arctic for residents and visitors alike. A Donald B. MacMillan Collection can be found in the Bowdoin College Library Special Collections, Peary MacMillan Arctic Museum & Arctic Studies Center. 1926 Alaskan Aerial Survey Expedition (11 Photographs) Organized by the U.S. Navy, 112 navy men were assigned to the expedition under Captain Charles W. Call, to conduct a highly successful aerial survey of Southeast Alaska, which resulted in 10,000 miles of photographed territory, detailed meteorological recording, and subsequently, a notable increase in the use of aviation for various industries including forestry, mining and fishing. Three photographs illustrate final testing of type OL-3 serial numbers A-7055 and A-7061. Commemorating the departure of the aircraft for Alaska, two photographs are taken by Harry T. Bishop (1895-1963) at the San Diego Naval Station. Finally having arrived at Ketchikan, Alaska, on June 9th, prepared to explore unknown Arctic regions with aerial photographic charting and to test radio communications systems, images feature a flight crew having safely landed on a desolate rocky shore, as well as aerial views of the mountains and glaciers. The expedition had remained in Ketchikan for two months before proceeding on to Wrangell, and then to Juneau where it was based until September 10th. An exceptional and scarce visual chronicle of pioneering Arctic flight and aerial surveying. Donald Baxter MacMillan (1874-1970) made over 30 expeditions to the Arctic in his 46-year career. Explorer, sailor, teacher, philanthropist, researcher, and lecturer, he traveled over 300,000 miles charting new territory, training students, performing scientific research and studying and aiding the native people of Labrador and Greenland. He pioneered the use of radios, airplanes, and electricity
