        The Great Gatsby

New York: Charles Scribners, 1925. First edition, first state with "chatter" p.60, "northern" p.119, "sick in tired" p.205, and "Union Street station" p. 211. Octavo, original dark green cloth. In good condition with some mottling to the spine and front board. Ink inscription to the front free endpaper and inside gutter. In 1922, Fitzgerald announced his decision to write "something new--something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." That extraordinary, beautiful, intricately patterned, and above all, simple novel became The Great Gatsby, arguably Fitzgerald's finest work and certainly the book for which he is best known. A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, Gatsby captured the spirit of the author's generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Cyril Connolly called The Great Gatsby one of the half dozen best American novels: "Gatsby remains a prose poem of delight and sadness which has by now introduced two generations to the romance of America, as Huckleberry Finn and Leaves of Grass introduced those before it" (Modern Movement 48).

        Autograph manuscript (fragment).

      N. p., [c. 1925]. - Large 8vo. 12 pp (numbered 29 to 40). A large portion of her essay "Composition as Explanation", published in 1925. "And so there was the natural phenomena that was war, which had been, before war came, several generations behind the contemporary composition, because it became war and so completely needed to be contemporary became completely contemporary and so created the completed recognition of the contemporary composition. Every one but one may say every one became consciously became aware of the existence of the authenticity of the modern composition. This then the contemporary recognition, because of the academic thing known as war having been forced to become contemporary made every one not only contemporary in act not only contemporary in thought but contemporary in self-consciousness made every one contemporary with the modern composition. And so the art creation of the contemporary composition which would have been outlawed normally outlawed several generations more behind even than war, war having been brought so to speak up to date art so to speak was allowed not completely to be up to date, but nearly up to date, in other words we who created the expression of the modem composition were to be recognized before we were dead some of us even quite a long time before we were dead. And so war may be said to have advanced a general recognition of the expression of the contemporary composition by almost thirty years". - In her essay, Stein connects World War I’s influence on the evolution of warfare (and the shifting consciousness of the citizens and soldiers of those nations involved) to the role of Modernism in the evolution of the arts. - Slightly browned; in pencil.

[Manuscript]: [Key] to a Knowledge of Nature

[Circa 1925]. Octavo. 116 typewritten pages, illustrated with five full-page photographic illustrations (three in color) with applied typed captions. Carbon typescript in photographically illustrated papercovered boards. Hand-drawn title page with a picture of a key in the title. Undated but we estimate circa 1925. Some modest erosion and splitting to the paper on the spine of the homemade binding, internally near fine. Inscribed on the front pastedown: "For David E. Sweet from Uncle Ralph Shepard, Author and Publisher." Typed note from the author laid in indicating the painstaking methods that he used to create this volume, and noting that the original of the work "... was used for some time in the nature study class of the school he attended in St. Petersburg, Florida." The book is dedicated in type: "The boy for whom it was first written, and to whom it is Dedicated. Albert Spencer of Florida." In the preface the author states that his belief is that nature is founded on the life of Jesus Christ, and notes that in places he has plagiarized from the Bible, Billy Sunday, William Jennings Bryant, John Burroughs, Neltj Blanchan, Charles Darwin, Joyce Kilmer, Gene Stratton Porter, and others. We could find out little about the author, but Albert Spencer of St. Petersburg appears to have been born in 1915. An attempt to explain nature with details and interesting photographic illustrations. Considering the do-it-yourself typing, binding, and illustrations, presumably no more than a handful were created; and possibly unique. .

Typed letter signed "Alban" to composer Paul von Klenau

1 page. Large octavo. Dated Trahütten, September 23, [19]29. On stationery with "Trahütten in Steiermark Post: Deutsch-Landsberg via Graz" typed in red ink at head. With the original envelope postmarked September 23, [19]29 with Klenau's name and address in Copenhagen and Berg's return address in Vienna typed in red ink to verso. Several small corrections, presumably in the composer's hand. In German (with translation). Berg reacts to Klenau's announcement regarding a performance of the Three Fragments from Wozzeck (in an unspecified location). He encloses the sung text of the fragments (enclosure not included) and expresses his wish to meet Klenau again in Vienna during the next season, when Wozzeck will be staged there. "This, my dear Paul, is a big surprise! And it doubly pleases me that you are going to do the Fragments from Wozzeck... not only as a fact, but also because of the friendship that you are demonstrating... Strangely, just today, browsing through old sheet music, I found a program leaf with the texts of the Fragments that you may perhaps make good use of for the performance. Maybe such a program insert would be welcome to an audience not really be informed about Wozzeck... For this season I will have ?- listen and marvel (I myself marvel most of all) ?- eight to ten stages for Wozzeck. Even Vienna among them!... " Very slightly worn; creased at fold; envelope slightly worn and soiled. . Three Fragments from Wozzeck, for soprano and orchestra, was composed upon the insistence of conductor Hermann Scherchen, who hoped to direct a concert suite of pieces from Berg's 1925 opera, Wozzeck. Scherchen premiered the Fragments in Frankfurt on June 11, 1924. Paul von Klenau (1883-1946) was a Danish composer of German descent who was trained in Germany and spent most of his creative life there. From the 1920s, he was close to Schönberg's circle and adopted its dodecaphonic techniques. His last completed work, the Ninth Symphony, received its premiere in Copenhagen in March 2014, almost seventy years after its composition.

Tied with a black cord. Album worn and rubbed, with some light scuffing. Some photographs with light fading, others sharp. A VG+ album with About VG to VG+ photographs.. Black album mounting paper, unpaginated but many leaves in rear blank. 58 b/w photograhic images in album, 8 loose and 50 mounted with gold photograph corners. First many pages of album are occupied by b/w photographs of executions during the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894-96. Beheadings, Shootings, skin flayings... all are represented here. Strangely, the exeucution photographs are followed by images of caucasion soldiers smiling toward the camera and on a hillside.         THE LOST WORLD .

New York: A. L. Burt Company, Publishers, [1925] - Octavo, pp. [1-10] [1-3] 4-309 [310: blank], four inserted plates, original red-brown cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. Photoplay edition. Illustrated with four stills from the landmark 1925 First National silent movie directed by Harry O. Hoyt with special effects by Willis O'Brien (who later animated the creatures for King Kong). The 1925 film was a "lost" film for over 50 years. By contractual agreement, all known prints (positive and negative) were destroyed in 1929. Only a truncated 16 mm print was extant until a nearly full length print was discovered in the film archives of the Czech Republic in the 1990s. Today two restored versions exist, one a third longer than any other version with 30 minutes of footage replaced (nearly complete, and available on DVD), the other a restoration owned by Eastman Kodak (information from an article at the dvd journal website). The film was based on the first Professor Challenger story, in which the scientist and his exploring party locate a remnant of the prehistoric world on a plateau in South America. Challenger's narrative "remains the most famous of its type and has served as a model since its publication." - Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1-63. ". written as pure entertainment, and as such it is a huge success. It stands at the very end of an era of great adventure stories, and it is the equal of anything else in its genre." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature III, pp. 1270-73. Angenot and Khouri, "An International Bibliography of Prehistoric Fiction," SFS, VIII (March 1981), 43. A fine copy in nearly fine pictorial dust jacket with light wear at edges, shallow fraying with just a bit of loss at upper spine end, and tiny chip from upper front right corner tip. A sharp copy of this title, uncommon in this condition. (#148771) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Western Shore [GAY FICTION]

Harcourt, Brace and Co. New York (1925) - First Edition stated. Morgan Dennis dustjacket art. Uncommon novel of campus life and homosexual encounters, written while Crane was part of the ex-patriot community of Paris. "Episodes of student life in a co-educational university of California [Berkeley], modern but restrained in tone and presented with great distinction of style. George Towne, ex-lumberman; Milton Granger, the nice young man from Los Angeles; Aaron Berg, the brilliant Jew; Ethel Davis, who is preparing her doctor's thesis." A very obscure Homosexual themed novel listed in Anthony Slide's bibliography Lost Gay Novels. Slide writes The Western Shore was one of the first and remains the best novels about university life in Berkeley. There is only one obvious gay character, but two or three others who could be labeled as such. "A San Francisco setting, a fraternity initiation, fun and games among male students around an outdoor swimming pool, young men sleeping three to a room, a young male college professor who finds a bed in his home for a younger male student." Crane's family was deeply distressed by his book. Novels about campus life in America had, until then, presented the college scene as a four-year ball, an innocent round of parties, football games, fraternity dances and romance. And here was a ruthless, if gently proffered, would-be expose of that scene. Good, some loss to cheap cloth at front spine gutter, some erosion to cloth at top spine area, bookworm tunnel half centimeter deep at top fore-edge of page block, in Very Good dustjacket, that has suffered some small chips along top front spine edge.
