Rare partly-printed Document Signed "F.E. Ives"

Chicago 1925 - American-born inventor and father of color photography, first demonstrated at the Exposition of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in 1885. Originally called "chrome-scope," the quality of the color was highly praised but was not a commercial success due to its prohibitive costs. In 1903 Ives invented the Parallax Stereogram, the first "no glasses" auto-stereoscopic 3-D images. His son Herbert E. Ives (1882 - 1953), a Nobel Prize nominee for his development of the Color Television System and the inventor of the Color Fax, improved on his father's invention by creating Lenticular 3-D images, of the type used today on 3-D postcards, trading cards, and similar novelties, assuring a huge increase of the family fortune. "Ives snubs his Nobel-nominated son Herbert!" Outstanding and exceedingly rare document, 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, Chicago, Illinois, no date, circa 1925 -- a questionnaire sent out by Funk & Wagnall's to notable Americans for inclusion in their Famous Family Series. Ives provides relevant information pertaining to his parents and children, in part: ".Large families on both sides, mostly male, and mostly married young and had numerous children. My father was one of eleven and my mother, one of nine. I had only two sons F.E.I. (Frederic Edgar Ives) born in 1856 and H.E.I. (Herbert Eugene Ives) born in 1882. No other 'distinguished' member of my family, but my grandson is promising. Sorry, I have no more detailed data to give you." At the time this questionnaire was completed Herbert E. Ives had already won the Edward Longstreth Medal for Accomplishments in Science in 1907, 1915, and again in 1919. He had already successfully invented and transmitted the first color facsimile. Within three years he would lead a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers at the famed Bell Laboratories and create the first Color Television System. But like his autobiography states: "No matter what I did or accomplished - it was never good enough for my father." Letters and written material in the hand of Frederick Eugene Ives rarely come to market as he was a notoriously bad correspondent. All of his papers are currently in the possession of the Library of Congress. Small chips, creases, and tears around the edges; very good(-) condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Publisher's black cloth, with a concentric square pattern to the front board in gilt, lettered in gilt; in the original light gray dust jacket, lettered in dark blue and brown. A tight and attractive copy in the scarce dust jacket. Hanneman A3a. In Our Time is Hemingway's first collection of short stories, which was published before he gained notoriety as an author. In Our Time was preceded by in our time, a collection of 18 short untitled "chapters" published in a limited edition of 170 copies by the Three Mountains Press in Paris in 1924. This first American edition includes seventeen of the original vignettes, fifteen of which are interwoven with longer stories as "interchapters." The other two original vignettes were titled "A Very Short Story" and "The Revolutionist" and are published here along with "Indian Camp," "Big Two-Hearted River" (Parts I and II)," "The End of Something," "Cat in the Rain," and "My Old Man," among others. Hemingway's distinct writing style drew attention, and as The New York Times wrote in its 1925 review, the "very prose seems to have an organic being of its own. Every syllable counts toward a stimulating, entrancing experience of magic. The covers of his book should strain and bulge with the healthful ferment that is between them.". 1st Edition.. Hard Cover.         Advice on Marriage [Illustrated by Clara Tice]

Tice-Cunningham Press 1925 - Gilt lettered and decorated cover and spine. This copy belonged to the Illustrator of this edition. Limited to 50 copies, of which this is #8. "Etched and Colored By Clara Tice. Engraved and Printed by Harry Cunningham." Tice's etched bookplate affixed to front pastedown. Fourteen hand-colored etchings on Japanese vellum: seven calligraphic and seven illustrations [including frontispiece]. Tissue guards between every page. Bound in full red morocco with elaborate art deco gilt decoration to front and back covers, as well as the spine. Decorated and ruled dentelles. Some light rubbing spots to front hinge & closed crack to top 1/2", small scratch to bottom of front cover, corners bumped. Wear to edges of tissue guards. Clara Tice (22 May 1888 - 2 February 1973) was an American avant-garde illustrator and artist, who spent most of her life in New York City, United States. Because of her provocative art and public appearances, she was seen as representative of bohemian Greenwich Village and thus known as "The Queen of Greenwich Village." According to herself and the New York Times, in 1908 Tice was the first woman in Greenwich Village to bob her hair. During the 1920s, she illustrated about a dozen books with her erotic images, these are nowadays expensive collector's items. In 1940, her own book called ABC Dogs was published. It is a children's book in which each letter of the alphabet is represented by a dog breed whose name starts with the same letter. This publication sparked renewed interest in Tice and her art. She also worked on her memoirs, which she never completed. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Mrs Dalloway

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1925. First American edition. Octavo, original orange cloth. Light rubbing to the bottom cloth, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small chips. One of the nicest examples of this title we have seen. "In Mrs. Dalloway Woolf breaks decisively with the fictional conventions of the realistic novel The technique is almost orchestral, introducing and then interweaving the strains of the different characters' thoughts, and finally engineering, through a subtle sequence of readjustments and realignments, a new and delicate harmony between them at the close of the book Mrs. Dalloway thus initiated Woolf's sequence of radical experiments with literary form, embodying a striking combination of fluid sympathy and secret resistance Through the novel's rapid transitions between apparently disconnected, but secretly related stories, Woolf was able to suggest the hazards of neatly pigeonholing human character according to social situation or gender" (Parker, 110-11).

Gurre-Lieder von Jens Peter Jacobsen (Deutsch von Robert Franz Arnold) für Soli, Chor und Orchester. Partitur. [Full score]

Universal-Edition [ca 1925], Wien–Leipzig - First Edition, second issue, with newly-designed wrappers (the first issue was published in 1912 in an edition of 500 copies only). Rufer (Engl.) pp. 78-79. Ringer p. 311. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 37-38. The piano-vocal score, prepared by Alban Berg, first appeared in 1913 (U.E. 3696). An engraved full score in large format, including a number of corrections, was published in 1920 (U.E. 6300).First performed in Vienna on February 23, 1913, with Franz Schreker conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Choir and the Wiener KonzartvereinsorchesFritz Soot (1878-1965) was a German tenor. After singing a minor part at the world premiere of Strauss's Elektra (1909), he emerged as a leading singer in the 1910s. He took major parts in operas then new, including Mephistopheles in Busoni's Doktor Faust and the Tambourmajor in Berg's Wozzeck. He performed Schoenberg as early as 1913 (Vossische Zeitung, Berlin, November 17, 1913), and was considered for the part of Waldemar at the world premiere of the Gurrelieder (Schoenberg's letter to Soot of November 18, 1913). It is not known whether he sang the part on a later occasion.Richard Kraus (1902-1978), a German conductor, spent his entire career in his native country; in 1927, he took his first appointment in Kassel. "In March 1900 Schoenberg began setting Jens Peter Jacobsen’s Gurre-Lieder as a song cycle for voice and piano, for entry in a competition. However, Schoenberg soon saw wider possibilities in the text. He therefore decided to connect the songs he had already composed (those in the first two parts of the finished work) with symphonic interludes and set the whole poem as a vast cantata employing several soloists and a huge chorus and orchestra. The work depicts the love of King Waldemar and Tove under the Tristanesque imminence of death, Waldemar’s blasphemous defiance of God after Tove’s death, the nightly ride at the head of a ghostly retinue to which the king’s restless spirit is subsequently condemned, and its dismissal by the summer wind at the approach of day. Schoenberg encompassed all this in a series of tableaux of extraordinary magnificence." O. W. Neighbour in Grove onlineThe Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885) wrote his Gurresange in 1871. The German translation is by Robert Franz Arnold (1872- 1938). Large folio. Modern quarter mid-tan calf with marbled boards, original publisher's light green printed upper wrapper bound in. 1f.
