        Das Buch 15 Volumes

Berlin: Verlag Lambert Schneider/ Schocken. Very Good+ with No dust jacket as issued. 1925-1935. 1st Thus. Hardcover. Slight wear and soil to cream colored flexible vellum boards, light foxing to fore and bottom page edges ; Bright, solid books, top edge gilt, gilt stamped titles front and spine. This is not the true first but the deluxe edition published with vellum flexible boards, satin bookmark bound in each book. Text in German.; Die Schrift; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 2967 pages; Das Buch (Die Schrift) is the first translation of the Hebrew Bible into German, a language that would be more understandable to European Jews. "Born in Vienna, Buber came from a family of observant Jews, but broke with Jewish custom to pursue secular studies in philosophy. In 1902, he became the editor of the weekly Die Welt, the central organ of the Zionist movement, although he later withdrew from organizational work in Zionism. In 1923, Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, Ich und Du (later translated into English as I and Thou), and in 1925, he began translating the Hebrew Bible into the German language. In 1930, Buber became an honorary professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main, but resigned in protest from his professorship immediately after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. He then founded the Central Office for Jewish Adult Education, which became an increasingly important body as the German government forbade Jews to attend public education. In 1938, Buber left Germany and settled in Jerusalem, Mandate Palestine (later Israel)." Buber worked with Rosenzweig until ill health forced his co-translator to resign in 1929. The balance of work was done by Buber alone. With the rise of Nazism and the changes to the laws regulating the publishing industry, Verlag Lambert Schneider was forced to cede the publishing of this series to Schocken. The books are titled as follows: - I Im Anfang; II Namen; III Er Rief; IV In Der Wüste; V Reden; VI Josephus; VII Richter; VIII Schmuel; IX Königs; X Jeschajahu; XI Jirmajahu; XII Jecheskel; XIII; Der Zwölf; XIV Der Preisungen and XV Gleichsprüche .

Exemplaire très séduisant. Collection Edmond Jaloux. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition. Very Good +/Very Good +. First state with "Divine" on contents page. A very bright copy of the novel in dust jacket.         The Place-Names of the Isle of Man.

Douglas, Isle of Man: Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh (The Many Society),, 1925-9. With their Origin & History. Six volumes, octavo. Original mottled tan yapp-edged card wraps. 17 folding maps, portrait. Wraps inevitably a little crumpled and split at the edges, but very few chips, and overall a very good set, superbly preserved, unopened. First editions. Wonderful set of this uncommon work of toponymy by the pioneering Manx nationalist, scholar, poet and playwright. It was described by William Cubbon, Manx bibliographer, founder member of the Manx Language Society, secretary and librarian to the Manx Museum, and a driving force behind the Manx National Archive, as representing, "an amazing amount of intensive research Â… The introductory matter is lucidly written, and his explanations of the meanings of the names are not without a certain romantic interest, and in all cases they bear the stamp of authority". Kneen was awarded an honorary MA by Liverpool University in recognition of work on Manx culture, and in 1933, on the recommendation of Professor Carl Marstrander, the Norwegian expert on Irish Gaelic, who had made recordings of the last surviving Manx speakers, King Haakon of Norway conferred on Kneen the Knighthood of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olaf.

        The Knave of Hearts

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1925 - A Near Fine copy of the book that suffers from light to moderate foxing throughout (and on the front cover illustration). Original black cloth with mounted cover illustration and pictorial endpapers. Complete with the full complement of illustrations by Maxfield Parrish, his last and most brilliant book illustration project. Oddly, the title page of this copy is printed out of register, so that the font and images are blurry. We have never seen a copy like this and suspect that it was an error caught very early on in the print run.Parrish worked for three years on the illustrations for the book, creating an elaborate model of the castle to use for his inspiration. In agreeing to work on the project, Parrish wrote: "You must understand all this layout to be in gorgeous color. The landscapes back of the figures in the cover lining - a very beautiful affair illuminated by a golden late afternoon sun: castles, waterfall, rocks and mountains." (Letter from Oct. 24, 1920 to H. Chapin of Scribner's). Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Upper wrapper slightly browned and stained, professionally repaired; lower lacking. Minor repairs to edges of final leaf. . First Edition, second issue, with newly-designed wrappers (the first issue was published in 1912 in an edition of 500 copies only). Rufer (Engl.) pp. 78-79. Ringer p. 311. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 37-38. The piano-vocal score, prepared by Alban Berg, first appeared in 1913 (U.E. 3696). An engraved full score in large format, including a number of corrections, was published in 1920 (U.E. 6300). First performed in Vienna on February 23, 1913, with Franz Schreker conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Choir and the Wiener Konzartvereinsorches Fritz Soot (1878-1965) was a German tenor. After singing a minor part at the world premiere of Strauss's Elektra (1909), he emerged as a leading singer in the 1910s. He took major parts in operas then new, including Mephistopheles in Busoni's Doktor Faust and the Tambourmajor in Berg's Wozzeck. He performed Schoenberg as early as 1913 (Vossische Zeitung, Berlin, November 17, 1913), and was considered for the part of Waldemar at the world premiere of the Gurrelieder (Schoenberg's letter to Soot of November 18, 1913). It is not known whether he sang the part on a later occasion. Richard Kraus (1902-1978), a German conductor, spent his entire career in his native country; in 1927, he took his first appointment in Kassel. "In March 1900 Schoenberg began setting Jens Peter Jacobsen’s Gurre-Lieder as a song cycle for voice and piano, for entry in a competition... However, Schoenberg soon saw wider possibilities in the text... He therefore decided to connect the songs he had already composed (those in the first two parts of the finished work) with symphonic interludes and set the whole poem as a vast cantata employing several soloists and a huge chorus and orchestra. The work depicts the love of King Waldemar and Tove under the Tristanesque imminence of death, Waldemar’s blasphemous defiance of God after Tove’s death, the nightly ride at the head of a ghostly retinue to which the king’s restless spirit is subsequently condemned, and its dismissal by the summer wind at the approach of day. Schoenberg encompassed all this in a series of tableaux of extraordinary magnificence." O. W. Neighbour in Grove online The Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885) wrote his Gurresange in 1871. The German translation is by Robert Franz Arnold (1872-1938).
