The Anatomy of Melancholy What it is, with all the kinds, causes, symptomes, prognostickes, & several cures of it In three partitions Philosophically, Medicinally, Historically, opened and cut up by Democritus Junior with a Satyricall Preface

London: Nonesuch Press, 1925. With 200 illustrations (with some repeat designs) by E. McKnight Kauffer reproduced from zinc line blocks. Two volumes. No. 712 of 750 copies. Printed at the Westminster Press in Monotype Plantin on Dutch laid paper with Nonesuch watermark. Folio, original parchment backed, patterned paper covered boards. A couple of small bumps, spines very slightly darkened, otherwise a very good, clean copy. The owner of the press, Francis Meynell, had been a great fan of McKnight Kauffer's work for some time before he commissioned this work to accompany the text from the original 6th edition of 1628. Kauffer's work caused some controversy but was stoutly defended by Roger Fry and Kauffer was subsequently commissioned by several leading publishers. The work is really remarkable and like nothing which preceded it.

Typed letter signed "Alban" to composer Paul von Klenau

1 page. Large octavo. Dated Trahütten, September 23, [19]29. On stationery with "Trahütten in Steiermark Post: Deutsch-Landsberg via Graz" typed in red ink at head. With the original envelope postmarked September 23, [19]29 with Klenau's name and address in Copenhagen and Berg's return address in Vienna typed in red ink to verso. Several small corrections, presumably in the composer's hand. In German (with translation). Berg reacts to Klenau's announcement regarding a performance of the Three Fragments from Wozzeck (in an unspecified location). He encloses the sung text of the fragments (enclosure not included) and expresses his wish to meet Klenau again in Vienna during the next season, when Wozzeck will be staged there. "This, my dear Paul, is a big surprise! And it doubly pleases me that you are going to do the Fragments from Wozzeck... not only as a fact, but also because of the friendship that you are demonstrating... Strangely, just today, browsing through old sheet music, I found a program leaf with the texts of the Fragments that you may perhaps make good use of for the performance. Maybe such a program insert would be welcome to an audience not really be informed about Wozzeck... For this season I will have – listen and marvel (I myself marvel most of all) – eight to ten stages for Wozzeck. Even Vienna among them!... " Very slightly worn; creased at fold; envelope slightly worn and soiled. . Three Fragments from Wozzeck, for soprano and orchestra, was composed upon the insistence of conductor Hermann Scherchen, who hoped to direct a concert suite of pieces from Berg's 1925 opera, Wozzeck. Scherchen premiered the Fragments in Frankfurt on June 11, 1924. Paul von Klenau (1883-1946) was a Danish composer of German descent who was trained in Germany and spent most of his creative life there. From the 1920s, he was close to Schönberg's circle and adopted its dodecaphonic techniques. His last completed work, the Ninth Symphony, received its premiere in Copenhagen in March 2014, almost seventy years after its composition.

Paris: Aux Editions de l'Ibis, 1925. No. 431 OF 500 COPIES, SIGNED BY SAUDÉ n. Hardcover. The Definitive Work on Pochoir. 328 x 256 mm (12 7/8 x 10 1/8"). 4 p.l., iii-xxiv, [ii], 74 pp., [3] leaves. With introductory notes by Antoine Bourdelle and Lucien Descaves. No. 431 OF 500 COPIES, SIGNED BY SAUDÉ. Loose as issued in publisher's blue-gray paper portfolio backed with matching cloth, upper cover with printed gilt titling and onlaid brightly colored pochoir color print, lower cover with onlaid pochoir roundel, pochoir endpapers. Without the publisher's slipcase. With an initial on burnished gold, title page vignette, headpieces and tailpieces, and numerous illustrations in the text (all colored using the pochoir technique), 14 engraved figures demonstrating the steps in the pochoir process, and 30 RICHLY COLORED POCHOIR PLATES, comprised of a full-page sample of the Chapuis-designed endpaper, and 29 other plates depicting 20 subjects, four of these in multiple states, as called for, many with tissue guards. Fry "Art Deco Designs in Color," p. 2. The fragile paper boards somewhat soiled, rubbed, and marked, with a bit of wear along joints, but entirely solid; one plate with minor crease to fore margin and a couple of small closed tears to same, otherwise a fine copy internally, clean and fresh, with vibrant colors. This is the definitive work on the pochoir technique, in which stencils are used to create a fine colored print. Centered in Paris, the process rose to prominence in the 1890s and was particularly popular in the first 30 years of the 20th century, the method being widely used in Art Nouveau and Art Deco prints. It was employed by such artists as Picasso, Matisse, and Miró to produce prints of their works, and most of the iconic color illustrations and posters of the period were products of pochoir. Jean Saudé was the undisputed master of this technique, training with André Marty before establishing his own atelier, Ibis, in 1900. In the present work, Saudé explains each step of the painstaking process, which is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. Stencils are cut by the decoupeur and the pigments are applied by colorists; the plates shown here in multiple states demonstrate the various stages of coloring before the print is complete. Pochoir coloring is still considered hand coloring, as no part of the process is mechanized. The brilliantly colored illustrations here include works by prominent artists of the day, including Benedictus, Chapuis, Lepape, Madelaine, Morisset, Rodin, and Sem.

Hardcover. 438 x 305 mm (17 1/4 x 12"). 3 p.l., 3-216 pp. ONE OF 200 COPIES on paper, 175 of them for sale (and 15 copies on vellum, 12 of them for sale). Original calf-backed thick vellum boards, raised bands, gilt spine titling, edges untrimmed. In a (slightly worn) green slipcase. Printer's device in blue in colophon. Printed in black, red, and blue, with numerous large and small roman style initials. Hornby 35; Franklin, pp. 240-41. Spine lightly sunned, joints somewhat rubbed and flaked (front joint with thin crack at head, chip to head of rear joint, but the binding entirely solid and unsoiled, and a fine copy internally, very clean, fresh, and bright. This collection of poems, containing some of Spenser's most important and enduring short works, is "minor" only in terms of length; typographically, it is one of the most creative Ashendene products, as the considerable variation in page design and ink color reflect an attempt to suggest the varying contents of these quite different poems. More blue was used in this book than in any other Ashendene Press publication, and because of the combination of this and the variety in the lengths of the lines, Hornby said that the book was for him "a more than usually difficult and interesting typographical problem." The last of Hornby's folios to be printed in Subiaco type, it shares in the tradition of impressive Ashendene large format books, all of them beautiful as well as significant achievements in modern book production. The boards of the Ashendene Spenser volumes are often found discolored and almost always rather soiled, so the especially clean vellum here is a very attractive feature.

Hardcover. 197 x 248 mm (7 3/4 x 9 3/4"). 3 p.l., 253, [1] pp., [1] leaf (colophon). No. 159 OF 300 COPIES on Rives paper, from a total edition of 365 copies, 15 of which were not for sale. Attractive contemporary olive brown morocco, gilt, covers with French fillet border and frame composed of a swirling vine enclosed by fillets, raised bands, spine compartments with gilt fillet frames, gilt titling, broad turn-ins densely gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. With original wrappers bound in. With 88 illustrations by André Dignimont, 15 of these full-page, printed in rich colors using the pochoir technique. Two-inch crack at head of front joint, spine evenly sunned (as expected), otherwise very fine, the binding especially lustrous, the text fresh and clean, and the illustrations very richly colored. This novel of life in a provincial French brothel and among the demi-monde of Paris was produced by a writer of the Decadent school who knew this world well. "Jean Lorrain" was the pen name assumed (at his family's insistence) by Paul Duval (1855-1906), a flamboyantly gay French poet and novelist whose life was as scandalous as his writings. Described by his biographer as "Sodom's ambassador to Paris," he chronicled the seamy underside of urban life in the glittering Belle Époque. The vividly colored illustrations here are provocative, amusing, and sometimes rather moving, as in the tender domestic scene depicting a half-naked prostitute serenely sitting in the garden, shelling peas beside a housekeeper in a modest gray dress. The artist André Dignimont (1891-1965) was a prolific illustrator whose work graced books by Colette, Verlaine, Balzac, and Zola, as well as the French editions of "Great Expectations" and "Gone with the Wind." The attractive binding here is unsigned, but is expertly crafted from fine materials.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. No Better Copy Anywhere. 368 x 305 mm (14 1/2 x 12"). 46 pp. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's brightly colored pictorial cloth, pictorial endleaves, original glassine dust jacket. Housed in the publisher's matching pictorial box. With 26 very pleasing partial and full-page illustrations by Maxfield Parrish. A NEARLY MINT AND PERHAPS UNSURPASSABLE COPY. This is an amazing copy of the chief work of an important 20th century American illustrator. Raised in Philadelphia and spending his adult life in Cornish, New Hampshire, Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) was a painter and illustrator known for his idealized neoclassical imagery and what has been characterized as distinctive saturated hues. Beginning with a commission for L. Frank Baum's "Mother Goose in Prose" in 1897, he illustrated a large number of important books for an audience that included children, but also, in many cases, adults. In addition, he illustrated several popular magazines in the 1910s and 1920s. The present handsomely produced large-format work is the one for which he is best known, and it is the one most avidly sought after by collectors. With illustrations that took three years to produce (partly because the artist built elaborate models for them in his workshop), the book, says Parrish biographer Coy Ludwig, is "a sumptuous production . . . with illustrations, printed in rich colors on heavy, coated paper [that were] the highest-quality reproductions that could be had." Louise Saunders was the wife of Maxwell Perkins, editor at Scribner's; the present book is her best-known work. This item is not particularly rare, but to find it, as here, in nearly pristine condition and especially in a box equally well preserved is extraordinarily lucky.

        THE JAZZ SINGER (Presentation Copy)

New York: Brentano's, 1925. Raphaelson, Samson. THE JAZZ SINGER. New York: Brentano's, 1925. FIRST EDITION. A bright, FINE copy in the rare original publisher's dust jacket which is VERY GOOD (slightly chipped at the top of the spine and the back panel, a little dust-soiled). A PRESENTATION COPY from the author to New York City's DRAMATISTS GUILD. A superb association: "For Dramatist's Guild/Samson Raphaelson/1977 (51 years later)." The Jazz Singer, filmed by Warner Brothers in 1927, was the first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue sequences; it brought about the rise of the "talkies" and the decline of the silent film era. Using the Vitaphone sound-on-disc system, star Al Jolson sang a half-dozen songs making this the first true musical film as we think of it today. But its not just a major milestone in film history, Samson Raphaelson's story is a powerful one; Jakie Rabinowitz who goes against the traditions of his orthodox Jewish family by singing popular songs in a beerhall, is castigated by his synagogue cantor father and driven from home. Fast forward, Jakie becomes Jack Robin, a brilliant but tormented jazz singer. This story of an entertainer's hopes and dreams for a career coming into conflict with his culture and his faith is a classic and serves as the prototype for an entire genre. The first edition of THE JAZZ SINGER is virtually never found in its original dustjacket. Signed copies are exceptionally difficult to find and this association to The Dramatist's Guild is especially appealing. Samson Raphaelson died in 1983 after having won the lifetime achievement award from the Writer's Guild of America for his screenwriting. Among Samson Raphaelson's dozens of screen credits are such films as THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1939), SUSPICION (1943, directed by Alfred Hitchcock), and HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1943). THE JAZZ SINGER is one of the more indispensable cornerstones for a "Literature Into Film" collection. . Inscribed By Author. First Edition. Fine/Very Good.

New Preface to "The Life and Confessions of Oscar Wilde"

London: The Fortune Press,, 1925 & 1927. First and Second editions. 2 works, octavo. Vol. I: Original black cloth, printed paper label to front board. Vol. II: Original black cloth-backed black boards, titles to front board gilt. Housed in a custom black solander box. Spine ends and tips a little worn, Vol. II spine cracked but holding, internally fresh. An excellent set. First and second editions, with the first edition inscribed by Douglas on the front free endpaper to his son, "Raymond Douglas, from his affect. father, Xmas, 1925." In 1925, when Harris was trying to win over Lord Alfred Douglas so he could publish his biography of Oscar Wilde in England, he persuaded Douglas that Robert Ross was to blame for the passages to which Douglas objected. Harris and Douglas therefore collaborated on a new preface to the book, designed to be included in any future editions of Harris's biography, and thus satisfy Douglas that the book was no longer libellous to him. However, the preliminary version of the preface, of which Douglas had approved, was then revised by Harris. Outraged, Douglas had the original preface published separately here, including Harris's contributions, without his permission.
