Paris: G. Crès et Cie, 1925. No. 159 OF 300 COPIES on Rives paper, from a total edition of 365 copies, 15 of which were not for sale n. Hardcover. 197 x 248 mm (7 3/4 x 9 3/4"). 3 p.l., 253, [1] pp., [1] leaf (colophon). No. 159 OF 300 COPIES on Rives paper, from a total edition of 365 copies, 15 of which were not for sale. Attractive contemporary olive brown morocco, gilt, covers with French fillet border and frame composed of a swirling vine enclosed by fillets, raised bands, spine compartments with gilt fillet frames, gilt titling, broad turn-ins densely gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. With original wrappers bound in. With 88 illustrations by André Dignimont, 15 of these full-page, printed in rich colors using the pochoir technique. Two-inch crack at head of front joint, spine evenly sunned (as expected), otherwise very fine, the binding especially lustrous, the text fresh and clean, and the illustrations very richly colored. This novel of life in a provincial French brothel and among the demi-monde of Paris was produced by a writer of the Decadent school who knew this world well. "Jean Lorrain" was the pen name assumed (at his family's insistence) by Paul Duval (1855-1906), a flamboyantly gay French poet and novelist whose life was as scandalous as his writings. Described by his biographer as "Sodom's ambassador to Paris," he chronicled the seamy underside of urban life in the glittering Belle Époque. The vividly colored illustrations here are provocative, amusing, and sometimes rather moving, as in the tender domestic scene depicting a half-naked prostitute serenely sitting in the garden, shelling peas beside a housekeeper in a modest gray dress. The artist André Dignimont (1891-1965) was a prolific illustrator whose work graced books by Colette, Verlaine, Balzac, and Zola, as well as the French editions of "Great Expectations" and "Gone with the Wind." The attractive binding here is unsigned, but is expertly crafted from fine materials.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. No Better Copy Anywhere. 368 x 305 mm (14 1/2 x 12"). 46 pp. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's brightly colored pictorial cloth, pictorial endleaves, original glassine dust jacket. Housed in the publisher's matching pictorial box. With 26 very pleasing partial and full-page illustrations by Maxfield Parrish. A NEARLY MINT AND PERHAPS UNSURPASSABLE COPY. This is an amazing copy of the chief work of an important 20th century American illustrator. Raised in Philadelphia and spending his adult life in Cornish, New Hampshire, Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) was a painter and illustrator known for his idealized neoclassical imagery and what has been characterized as distinctive saturated hues. Beginning with a commission for L. Frank Baum's "Mother Goose in Prose" in 1897, he illustrated a large number of important books for an audience that included children, but also, in many cases, adults. In addition, he illustrated several popular magazines in the 1910s and 1920s. The present handsomely produced large-format work is the one for which he is best known, and it is the one most avidly sought after by collectors. With illustrations that took three years to produce (partly because the artist built elaborate models for them in his workshop), the book, says Parrish biographer Coy Ludwig, is "a sumptuous production . . . with illustrations, printed in rich colors on heavy, coated paper [that were] the highest-quality reproductions that could be had." Louise Saunders was the wife of Maxwell Perkins, editor at Scribner's; the present book is her best-known work. This item is not particularly rare, but to find it, as here, in nearly pristine condition and especially in a box equally well preserved is extraordinarily lucky.

        THE JAZZ SINGER (Presentation Copy)

New York: Brentano's, 1925. Raphaelson, Samson. THE JAZZ SINGER. New York: Brentano's, 1925. FIRST EDITION. A bright, FINE copy in the rare original publisher's dust jacket which is VERY GOOD (slightly chipped at the top of the spine and the back panel, a little dust-soiled). A PRESENTATION COPY from the author to New York City's DRAMATISTS GUILD. A superb association: "For Dramatist's Guild/Samson Raphaelson/1977 (51 years later)." The Jazz Singer, filmed by Warner Brothers in 1927, was the first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue sequences; it brought about the rise of the "talkies" and the decline of the silent film era. Using the Vitaphone sound-on-disc system, star Al Jolson sang a half-dozen songs making this the first true musical film as we think of it today. But its not just a major milestone in film history, Samson Raphaelson's story is a powerful one; Jakie Rabinowitz who goes against the traditions of his orthodox Jewish family by singing popular songs in a beerhall, is castigated by his synagogue cantor father and driven from home. Fast forward, Jakie becomes Jack Robin, a brilliant but tormented jazz singer. This story of an entertainer's hopes and dreams for a career coming into conflict with his culture and his faith is a classic and serves as the prototype for an entire genre. The first edition of THE JAZZ SINGER is virtually never found in its original dustjacket. Signed copies are exceptionally difficult to find and this association to The Dramatist's Guild is especially appealing. Samson Raphaelson died in 1983 after having won the lifetime achievement award from the Writer's Guild of America for his screenwriting. Among Samson Raphaelson's dozens of screen credits are such films as THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1939), SUSPICION (1943, directed by Alfred Hitchcock), and HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1943). THE JAZZ SINGER is one of the more indispensable cornerstones for a "Literature Into Film" collection. . Inscribed By Author. First Edition. Fine/Very Good.

New Preface to "The Life and Confessions of Oscar Wilde"

London: The Fortune Press,, 1925 & 1927. First and Second editions. 2 works, octavo. Vol. I: Original black cloth, printed paper label to front board. Vol. II: Original black cloth-backed black boards, titles to front board gilt. Housed in a custom black solander box. Spine ends and tips a little worn, Vol. II spine cracked but holding, internally fresh. An excellent set. First and second editions, with the first edition inscribed by Douglas on the front free endpaper to his son, "Raymond Douglas, from his affect. father, Xmas, 1925." In 1925, when Harris was trying to win over Lord Alfred Douglas so he could publish his biography of Oscar Wilde in England, he persuaded Douglas that Robert Ross was to blame for the passages to which Douglas objected. Harris and Douglas therefore collaborated on a new preface to the book, designed to be included in any future editions of Harris's biography, and thus satisfy Douglas that the book was no longer libellous to him. However, the preliminary version of the preface, of which Douglas had approved, was then revised by Harris. Outraged, Douglas had the original preface published separately here, including Harris's contributions, without his permission.

        Once on a Time

London, Hodder and Stoughton Ltd. 1925, 1925. First Charles Robinson Edition, 8vo. Publisher's light blue decorative cloth, titles and decoration in gilt to spine with added gilt and black illustration to front board; illustrated endpapers. Colourful pictorial dust-jacket. Beautiful detailed illustrations throughout by Charles Robinson, including title page and colour frontispiece. Binding bright. Slight fading to spine of dust jacket frayed to spine tips and corners, creased along extremities with a couple of small closed tears, a little marking to back panel. A lovely copy indeed. Ostensibly a typical fairytale, telling the story of a war between the kingdoms of Euralia and Barodia and the political shenanigans which take place in Euralia in the king's absence. The book is notable for it's believable and fallable characters such asa princess who is far from helpless; a prince who is pompous and vain; an enchantment which is almost entirely humorous; a villain who is not entirely villainous; a good king who isn't always good; an evil king who isn't always evil, and so on.

"Firmly rooted in the French 19th-century tradition, BüsserÂ’s symphonic and choral writing is indebted to Gounod and Saint-Saëns. He is best known, however, for his dramatic works, which betray Wagner's impact in both their form and their use of the orchestra. The influence of Debussy, whose advice Büsser sought over the opera that became his most successful, Colomba (c1902–10), is also evident in certain harmonic procedures and in an acute sensitivity to orchestral colour. The ballets, such as the light-hearted La ronde des saisons (1905) with its amusing descriptive touches, provide further evidence of his keen dramatic sense." Barbara L. Kelly in Grove Music Online.

The Tree of The Folkungs [Signed / Ingraverat] [The Tree of the Young People; Folkunga Trädet: Folke Filbyter and Bjälboarvfet]

Alfred A. Knopf, 1925, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good +, First American edition. A Very Good + copy of the first American edition, first printing, first issue (a smaller, later binding up was issued in the same year) in the Publisher's original green cloth with the front board lettered in gilt and decorated with green and red paint (spine ends pushed, slight rubbing to the spine ends and board corners), married to a Very Good example of the quite scarce dust jacket (minor chipping to the spine ends together with some light rubs to the spine panel, minor loss to the front panel's upper edge, front panel separated at the spine and with a horizontal tear near the spine panel center, some loss to the rear panel's top and bottom edges) SIGNED BY VERNER VON HEIDENSTAM on the title page. Swedish Poet and Novelist Verner Von Heidenstam, known for the joy of life shown in his prose and poetry, won the 1916 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his significance as the leading representative of a new era in our literature". Originally published in Swedish in two volumes titled Folke Filbyter (1905) and Bjälboarvfet (1907), the work was given special notice at the ceremony held to present the Prize to von Heidenstam where the noted Swedish critic Sven Söderman stated: "Truly monumental are the two volumes of Folkunga Trädet (1905-07) [The Tree of the Folkungs], Folke Filbyter and Bjälboarvet [The BjäIbo Inheritance], which constitute the trunk and lower branches of «the genealogical tree of the Folkungs», a great historical prose epic in which he [von Heidenstam] retraces the character of a clan of chieftains and the destinies of the Swedes during a period of the Middle Ages. Here the historical imagination of the author, sustained by an inspiration forever fresh, follows all threads in weaving the fates of his characters. His imagination, with its symbolic visions, glistens before the eye." Copies in the dust jacket are quite scarce and signed copies of von Heidenstam's work in any language and in any edition are extraordinarily scarce. In our experience, his signed books are among the scarcest of all those of the Nobel Prize in Literature winners. On our most recent check, the auction records revealed no signed copies of Verner von Heidenstam's works in any language appearing at auction in the past 39 years, beyond which the records do not go. A Very Good + copy of this quite notable work in the QUITE SCARCE dust jacket, SIGNED BY VERNER VON HEIDENSTAM. QUITE SCARCE TO RARE.

Papillons. Vingt planches en phototypie coloriées au patron donnant 81 papillons et 16 compositions décoratives

Paris: Tolmer editeur, circa, 1925. Complete collection of 20 pochoir plates measuring 448 x 323 mm., with title-page, introductory note and list of plates housed in the original folding case with cloth ties featuring pochoir design to the front board; an excellent set. A rare and astonishingly beautiful French Art Noveau design album based on the butterflies of the world, featuring species from China, India and Asia. Eugene Alain Séguy (1889-1985) was a leading French designer of the Art Noveau and Art Deco periods who produced eleven stunning design portfolios with a range of styles and inspirations. Séguy had an acute interest in scientific study of insects, and utilised this knowledge to produce two albums on this theme including this brilliant set of butterfly designs. For Séguy, insects were both beautiful objects and wondrous mechanical creations, and formed a rich subject matter for illustration and more abstract design possibilities. In Papillons he accomplished both goals. The album features remarkably detailed and accurate depictions of butterflies from across the globe in addition to breathtaking Art Noveau abstract designs derived from the their shimmering patterns. The pochoir stencil printmaking process was ideally suited to this task, capturing the subtlety and iridescence of light playing across fluttering wings.

        The Great Gatsby

New York: Charles Scribners, 1925. First edition, first state with "chatter" p.60, "northern" p.119, "sick in tired" p.205, and "Union Street station" p. 211. Octavo, original dark green cloth. In near fine condition, with the gilt lettering to the spine bright. An very nice example. In 1922, Fitzgerald announced his decision to write "something new--something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." That extraordinary, beautiful, intricately patterned, and above all, simple novel became The Great Gatsby, arguably Fitzgerald's finest work and certainly the book for which he is best known. A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, Gatsby captured the spirit of the author's generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Cyril Connolly called The Great Gatsby one of the half dozen best American novels: "Gatsby remains a prose poem of delight and sadness which has by now introduced two generations to the romance of America, as Huckleberry Finn and Leaves of Grass introduced those before it" (Modern Movement 48).

1925 - With an Introduction by Richard Curle. London & Toronto: J. M. Dent & Sons, 1925. 4 pp undated ads. Original maroon cloth, with dust jacket. First English Edition, published one day after the American first trade edition. This was Conrad's last novel, a Napoleonic tale left unfinished at his death in 1924. This is a fine copy; the striking color pictorial jacket by Thomas Derrick is just about fine as well (the merest hint of edge-wear); atypically the jacket's spine is NOT faded. Keating 190.
