1925. Hi, This lot is a 1925 Original Hardback Wisden in good to Very Good Condition, This Wisden is a very nice book, the things to point out are that the rear board has a large faded mark and the top right of the book has some staining for most of the book, it is not large but noticable. The gilt to the front and spine is very bright, some cloth lifting on the spine and some marks to the boards. The hinges are strong and the inside of the book is very presentable without restoration. Excellent photoplate.

        Mrs Dalloway

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1925. First American edition. Octavo, original orange cloth. Light rubbing to the bottom cloth, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small chips. One of the nicest examples of this title we have seen. "In Mrs. Dalloway Woolf breaks decisively with the fictional conventions of the realistic novel The technique is almost orchestral, introducing and then interweaving the strains of the different characters' thoughts, and finally engineering, through a subtle sequence of readjustments and realignments, a new and delicate harmony between them at the close of the book Mrs. Dalloway thus initiated Woolf's sequence of radical experiments with literary form, embodying a striking combination of fluid sympathy and secret resistance Through the novel's rapid transitions between apparently disconnected, but secretly related stories, Woolf was able to suggest the hazards of neatly pigeonholing human character according to social situation or gender" (Parker, 110-11).

Gurre-Lieder von Jens Peter Jacobsen (Deutsch von Robert Franz Arnold) für Soli, Chor und Orchester. Partitur. [Full score]

Universal-Edition [ca 1925], Wien–Leipzig - First Edition, second issue, with newly-designed wrappers (the first issue was published in 1912 in an edition of 500 copies only). Rufer (Engl.) pp. 78-79. Ringer p. 311. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 37-38. The piano-vocal score, prepared by Alban Berg, first appeared in 1913 (U.E. 3696). An engraved full score in large format, including a number of corrections, was published in 1920 (U.E. 6300).First performed in Vienna on February 23, 1913, with Franz Schreker conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Choir and the Wiener KonzartvereinsorchesFritz Soot (1878-1965) was a German tenor. After singing a minor part at the world premiere of Strauss's Elektra (1909), he emerged as a leading singer in the 1910s. He took major parts in operas then new, including Mephistopheles in Busoni's Doktor Faust and the Tambourmajor in Berg's Wozzeck. He performed Schoenberg as early as 1913 (Vossische Zeitung, Berlin, November 17, 1913), and was considered for the part of Waldemar at the world premiere of the Gurrelieder (Schoenberg's letter to Soot of November 18, 1913). It is not known whether he sang the part on a later occasion.Richard Kraus (1902-1978), a German conductor, spent his entire career in his native country; in 1927, he took his first appointment in Kassel. "In March 1900 Schoenberg began setting Jens Peter Jacobsen’s Gurre-Lieder as a song cycle for voice and piano, for entry in a competition. However, Schoenberg soon saw wider possibilities in the text. He therefore decided to connect the songs he had already composed (those in the first two parts of the finished work) with symphonic interludes and set the whole poem as a vast cantata employing several soloists and a huge chorus and orchestra. The work depicts the love of King Waldemar and Tove under the Tristanesque imminence of death, Waldemar’s blasphemous defiance of God after Tove’s death, the nightly ride at the head of a ghostly retinue to which the king’s restless spirit is subsequently condemned, and its dismissal by the summer wind at the approach of day. Schoenberg encompassed all this in a series of tableaux of extraordinary magnificence." O. W. Neighbour in Grove onlineThe Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885) wrote his Gurresange in 1871. The German translation is by Robert Franz Arnold (1872- 1938). Large folio. Modern quarter mid-tan calf with marbled boards, original publisher's light green printed upper wrapper bound in. 1f. Zoogeographically, the islands span the Palaearctic region (Japan) and the Oriental region (Taiwan); Kuroda thought this was one of the most interesting ornithological regions of the world from a zoogeographic point of view.         Grass (First Edition, inscribed by Cooper)

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1925. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author: "To: Sidney Williams - who ushered 'Grass' into Philadelphia / and made it grow / and to whom the author of this book owes a very real debt of gratitude / Merian C. Cooper." Basis for the subsequent silent documentary film, released the same year. Scarce to find in jacket or inscribed. A landmark enthographic documentary, Cooper and photographer Ernest Schoedsack accompanied the Bakhityari, a tribe of 50,000 nomads on their hazardous annual journey to bring their herds to pasture. The two collaborated on a number of silent documentaries before jointly writing, producing, and directing "King Kong" in 1933 (Cooper, a pilot who served with distinction in both World Wars, appears toward the end of "King Kong" as the Flight Commander). With the immediate success of "King Kong," Cooper became a Vice President of RKO Pictures. He went on to produce many notable films, as well as the first Cinerama presentation. In 1952 he was awarded a special Academy Award for lifetime achievement. Very Good plus in a Very Good dust jacket. Spine slightly toned, and a couple of faint smudges to the boards. Jacket spine and folds toned, a few faint dampstains, and tiny chips and tears (several cello-tape repairs on the verso).

A Contribution to the Knowledge to the Avifauna of the Riu Kiu Islands and the vicinity.

Tokyo: published by the author, 1925. First edition.. A few faint spots to the other page edge only, a tight and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. vi, 293 + 8 full page color plates (from painting by Juzo Kobayashi), 1 large folding map, 1 table. Later one-half tan morocco leather with five raised bands, one compartment has a red morocco title/leather panel lettered in gilt, over original wine red cloth-covered boards, original pale yellow endpapers, top page edge in gilt, folio (15.25 x 10.75 inches). This monograph is based primarily on 14 months of fieldwork from 1921-1922 in the Riu Kiu islands (also known as the Loo Cho islands) that stretch between the Japanese island chain and Formosa (now Taiwan). Zoogeographically, the islands span the Palaearctic region (Japan) and the Oriental region (Taiwan); Kuroda thought this was one of the most interesting ornithological regions of the world from a zoogeographic point of view. The monograph describes 281 species and subspecies based on 1621 skins collected in 1921-22 and reviews all other specimens in museums in around the world. A very through monograph of great regional import in an exceedingly attractive binding. Less than 500 copies were printed. Ornate bookplate of ornithologist and author, J. G. van Marle on the front endpaper.

London: RCA,, 1925?-7. Gallimaufry; The Mandrake; The Second Mandrake. 3 numbers (all published), octavo. Original decorated wrappers, wire-stitched. Housed in a black flat back cloth box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Illustrated throughout mostly with woodcuts by Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, Enid Marx, and others. One or two staples lightly pulled but an excellent set. Sole printings of each publication. Under the initial editorship of Douglas Bliss these three numbers constitute the complete set of the in-house magazine which featured early work by Marx, Ravilious and, most eye-catching of all, some brilliant early work by the precocious Edward Bawden. Numerous illustrations were hand-coloured by Bawden including the cover art of both Gallimaufry (Ravilious) and the first issue of The Mandrake (Bawden). Individual issues rarely appear for sale and we know of only two of three complete sets having been on the market in recent times.

NUMBER THEORY -MANUSCRIPT & OFF PRINTS].

1925 - Three off prints on Theory of Numbers: Théorie Des Nombres & Sur les nombres de Fermat. Comptes rendus des séances de l'Académie des Sciences, t. 180, p. 799, séance du 16 mars 1925 (4to off print numbered p.1-2.); Sur Le Nombre N= 1/9 (1023 & 1) 8vo. 3, [1]p. ; Sur Les Nombres De Fermat. Fn= 22n + 1. 8vo. 5, [3]p. Plus approximately 65 pages of manuscript notes in French with calculations. The majority of the manuscript pages appear to deal with quadratic forms in Leonard Dickson's - Studies in the theory of numbers. (1930), which contains numerous original investigations in the theory of quadratic forms in three or four variables. In Dickson's earlier work on the History of the Theory of Numbers (1919-23) he provided little interpretation and made no attempt to contextualize the results being described. It is probably with this background that Kraitchik devoted much of the manuscript sheets to Dickson's work. Other manuscript notes dealing with other equations from Euler "Continuous la table" dated March to December, 1939. The last group of manuscript pages in 8vo deal with equations from a publication of Landar(sic) Backman dated November 1931 and May 1938. There are a few loose sheets with calculations but no identification. These may be sheets used to make rough calculations. Together this manuscript collection and off prints offer a very good example of Kraitchik's thinking in regards the theory of numbers. Although Kraitchik is often thought of in relation to Recreational Mathematics, he really spent considerable time with the Theory of Numbers. The present collection of 3 off prints and manuscript sheets most of which are on square lined sheets is thus quite rare and significant for this noted 20th century mathematician.
