        Autograph quotation signed. In Arabic.

Marrakesh, no date. - Folio. 1 page. The Pasha's headed notepaper mounted on uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of Hajd Thami Glaoui to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organisation formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states. The present manuscript has been studied extensively by native Arabic scholars, who nevertheless have been unable to decipher the Pasha's handwriting (see accompanying document). "Praise be to God! [.] war and establishing peace is the goal of every human being [.] decisions [.] goal. Truth is victory [.] nations [.] purposes [.] the League of Nations [.] he who knows his goal must strive to support [.] and peace. [Signed] Hajd Thami Glaoui". Thami Glaoui ruled as Pasha of Marrakech from 1912 until his death in 1956, amassing one of the largest fortunes in the world (reckoned to be $50 million) from harvests, stock, taxation, and (according to a Time Magazine article) a cut of the earnings of the 27,000 prostitutes operating in the Marrakech area. He has become a despised figure in Moroccan politics; he was, for example, a full ally of the French regime and conspired with them to successfully overthrow Sultan Mohammed V in 1953. His personal style and charm, as well as his prodigality with his wealth, made him many friends among the international fashionable set of the day. He visited the European capitals often, while his visitors at Marrakech included Winston Churchill, Colette, Maurice Ravel, and Charlie Chaplin. Pax Mundi. Livre d'or de la paix. Enquete universelle de la Ligue mondiale pour la paix sous le haut patronage de son comite d'honneur avec l'approbation de la Societe des nations, du Bureau international du travail et de la Cour permanente de justice internationale. Geneve, Societe paxunis, 1932. TIME Magazine May 20th, 1957. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Das Sind Documenta Spirit-Human

Eugen Diederichs), (Jena 1925 - Octavo. 28ff. From an edition of 800 copies, this is one of 100 signed by the illustrator. With twenty-five full-page illustrations from drawings by Wolf depicting a wide and disturbing array of monsters. Wolf, who studied under Hans Thoma, fled Germany in 1938, settling in the U.S., where he continued his work as an illustrator. One of his more noteworthy contributions was the set of thirty-two woodcuts he produced for The Book of Job, published by the Cummington Press in 1944. The frontispiece of that work bears a compositional similarity to an image in this earlier work. Here, we see a bearded man gazing skyward with a look of exquisite agony, while in Job, the frontispiece depicts the moment in which the beset patriarch screams out from all the injustices that have befallen him. Through the emotions of his characters, one can see Wolf's work as an artistic reaction to the cultural turmoil he experienced in Weimar Germany. Publisher's green cloth-backed printed boards show a small tear to spine head, otherwise a nearly fine copy of a rather scarce book. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Anatomy of Melancholy What it is, with all the kinds, causes, symptomes, prognostickes, & several cures of it In three partitions Philosophically, Medicinally, Historically, opened and cut up by Democritus Junior with a Satyricall Preface

London: Nonesuch Press, 1925. With 200 illustrations (with some repeat designs) by E. McKnight Kauffer reproduced from zinc line blocks. Two volumes. No. 712 of 750 copies. Printed at the Westminster Press in Monotype Plantin on Dutch laid paper with Nonesuch watermark. Folio, original parchment backed, patterned paper covered boards. A couple of small bumps, spines very slightly darkened, otherwise a very good, clean copy. The owner of the press, Francis Meynell, had been a great fan of McKnight Kauffer's work for some time before he commissioned this work to accompany the text from the original 6th edition of 1628. Kauffer's work caused some controversy but was stoutly defended by Roger Fry and Kauffer was subsequently commissioned by several leading publishers. The work is really remarkable and like nothing which preceded it.

Typed letter signed "Alban" to composer Paul von Klenau

1 page. Large octavo. Dated Trahütten, September 23, [19]29. On stationery with "Trahütten in Steiermark Post: Deutsch-Landsberg via Graz" typed in red ink at head. With the original envelope postmarked September 23, [19]29 with Klenau's name and address in Copenhagen and Berg's return address in Vienna typed in red ink to verso. Several small corrections, presumably in the composer's hand. In German (with translation). Berg reacts to Klenau's announcement regarding a performance of the Three Fragments from Wozzeck (in an unspecified location). He encloses the sung text of the fragments (enclosure not included) and expresses his wish to meet Klenau again in Vienna during the next season, when Wozzeck will be staged there. "This, my dear Paul, is a big surprise! And it doubly pleases me that you are going to do the Fragments from Wozzeck... not only as a fact, but also because of the friendship that you are demonstrating... Strangely, just today, browsing through old sheet music, I found a program leaf with the texts of the Fragments that you may perhaps make good use of for the performance. Maybe such a program insert would be welcome to an audience not really be informed about Wozzeck... For this season I will have – listen and marvel (I myself marvel most of all) – eight to ten stages for Wozzeck. Even Vienna among them!... " Very slightly worn; creased at fold; envelope slightly worn and soiled. . Three Fragments from Wozzeck, for soprano and orchestra, was composed upon the insistence of conductor Hermann Scherchen, who hoped to direct a concert suite of pieces from Berg's 1925 opera, Wozzeck. Scherchen premiered the Fragments in Frankfurt on June 11, 1924. Paul von Klenau (1883-1946) was a Danish composer of German descent who was trained in Germany and spent most of his creative life there. From the 1920s, he was close to Schönberg's circle and adopted its dodecaphonic techniques. His last completed work, the Ninth Symphony, received its premiere in Copenhagen in March 2014, almost seventy years after its composition.

No. 431 OF 500 COPIES, SIGNED BY SAUDÉ. Loose as issued in publisher's blue-gray paper portfolio backed with matching cloth, upper cover with printed gilt titling and onlaid brightly colored pochoir color print, lower cover with onlaid pochoir roundel, pochoir endpapers. Without the publisher's slipcase. With an initial on burnished gold, title page vignette, headpieces and tailpieces, and numerous illustrations in the text (all colored using the pochoir technique), 14 engraved figures demonstrating the steps in the pochoir process, and 30 RICHLY COLORED POCHOIR PLATES, comprised of a full-page sample of the Chapuis-designed endpaper, and 29 other plates depicting 20 subjects, four of these in multiple states, as called for, many with tissue guards. Fry "Art Deco Designs in Color," p. 2. The fragile paper boards somewhat soiled, rubbed, and marked, with a bit of wear along joints, but entirely solid; one plate with minor crease to fore margin and a couple of small closed tears to same, otherwise a fine copy internally, clean and fresh, with vibrant colors. This is the definitive work on the pochoir technique, in which stencils are used to create a fine colored print. Centered in Paris, the process rose to prominence in the 1890s and was particularly popular in the first 30 years of the 20th century, the method being widely used in Art Nouveau and Art Deco prints. It was employed by such artists as Picasso, Matisse, and Miró to produce prints of their works, and most of the iconic color illustrations and posters of the period were products of pochoir. Jean Saudé was the undisputed master of this technique, training with André Marty before establishing his own atelier, Ibis, in 1900. In the present work, Saudé explains each step of the painstaking process, which is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. Stencils are cut by the decoupeur and the pigments are applied by colorists; the plates shown here in multiple states demonstrate the various stages of coloring before the print is complete. Pochoir coloring is still considered hand coloring, as no part of the process is mechanized. The brilliantly colored illustrations here include works by prominent artists of the day, including Benedictus, Chapuis, Lepape, Madelaine, Morisset, Rodin, and Sem.

Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1925. ONE OF 200 COPIES on paper, 175 of them for sale (and 15 copies on vellum, 12 of them for sale) n. Hardcover. 438 x 305 mm (17 1/4 x 12"). 3 p.l., 3-216 pp. ONE OF 200 COPIES on paper, 175 of them for sale (and 15 copies on vellum, 12 of them for sale). Original calf-backed thick vellum boards, raised bands, gilt spine titling, edges untrimmed. In a (slightly worn) green slipcase. Printer's device in blue in colophon. Printed in black, red, and blue, with numerous large and small roman style initials. Hornby 35; Franklin, pp. 240-41. Spine lightly sunned, joints somewhat rubbed and flaked (front joint with thin crack at head, chip to head of rear joint, but the binding entirely solid and unsoiled, and a fine copy internally, very clean, fresh, and bright. This collection of poems, containing some of Spenser's most important and enduring short works, is "minor" only in terms of length; typographically, it is one of the most creative Ashendene products, as the considerable variation in page design and ink color reflect an attempt to suggest the varying contents of these quite different poems. More blue was used in this book than in any other Ashendene Press publication, and because of the combination of this and the variety in the lengths of the lines, Hornby said that the book was for him "a more than usually difficult and interesting typographical problem." The last of Hornby's folios to be printed in Subiaco type, it shares in the tradition of impressive Ashendene large format books, all of them beautiful as well as significant achievements in modern book production. The boards of the Ashendene Spenser volumes are often found discolored and almost always rather soiled, so the especially clean vellum here is a very attractive feature.
