Death in Venice and Other Stories.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1925. First edition in English preceding the British edition by three years of Mann's classic novel. Octavo, original cloth, patterned endpapers. Translated from the German by Kenneth Burke. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with some light expert restoration to the crown of the spine. First editions are rare, especially in the original dust jacket. "Thomas Mann is one of the greatest and most widely read authors of the 20th century... An innovative stylist and synthesizer of the intellectual trends of his time, Mann exerted much influence on modern fiction not only in Germany but in Europe and in both Americas as well. His perceptiveness as an interpreter of Western cultural heritage and his skill as a cosmopolitan teacher of democratic and humanistic values earned him recognition as a 'mirror of his age' and a 'citizen of the world'... Among Mann's many well-written works of short fiction, "Death in Venice" (1928), a novella based on Mann's impressions during his stay in Venice, is the most famous... Typically for Mann, the novella deals with the problem of the unhappy, sick artist, Gustav von Aschenbach, who envies the healthy and 'normal' people of the bourgeois society" (Pribic, 262-3).

        Richard Strauss Signed Program.

1925 - Richard Strauss signed program. The program was for a concert by the Dusseldorf City Orchestra and Richard Strauss, held April 30, 1925. The program measures 6.5 inches by 8.75 inches. Double matted and framed opposite a photograph of Strauss. The entire piece measures 14.5 inches by 17.5 inches. Richard Strauss was a leading German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras. He is known for his operas, which include Der Rosenkavalier, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Salome; his Lieder, especially his Four Last Songs; his tone poems, including Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Also sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben, Symphonia Domestica, and An Alpine Symphony; and other instrumental works such as Metamorphosen and his Oboe Concerto. Strauss was also a prominent conductor in Western Europe and the Americas, enjoying quasi-celebrity status as his compositions became standards of orchestral and operatic repertoire. Strauss, along with Gustav Mahler, represents the late flowering of German Romanticism after Richard Wagner, in which pioneering subtleties of orchestration are combined with an advanced harmonic style [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Original Pen and Ink Illustration of Romantic Couple on the Golf Course

McClure's 1925 - Pen and ink and wash illustration on Bainbridge artists board. Approximately 15" x 10". Thin line of offsetting or mat burn at the very edges, evidence of previous matting on verso, stamped "McClure's" and pencil note "September, 1925" on verso, very good or better. Image of a young lothario staring intently into the eyes of a flapper with bobbed-haired on the ninth hole of a golf course, while a balding and bespectacled elder gentleman, presumably the flapper's father, takes aim with his club at the cranium of the romantic swain. After a good run as a respected news and literary magazine McClure's remade itself as a women's magazine, and published sporadically until it sputtered to a halt in early 1926. Apparently there was no September 1925 issue of McClure's but we assume this was intended to accompany a story there.

Boni & Liveright (1925), New York - A scarce book in its true First Edition of 1900, this is a fairly early copy of a book rarely found signed let alone with such a superb presentation. This copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "For/George W. Wilder/-The book that/introduced me - but/twenty years after/from/Theodore Dreiser/N.Y. April - 1926." Wilder, president of Butterick Publications, met Dreiser in June 1907, and on the basis of his growing reputation for SISTER CARRIE, hired him as editor-in-chief of his magazine THE DELINEATOR. Dreiser's statement of purpose published in the September issue of the magazine centered around woman's mastery of her own destiny, and he dedicated the publication "to strengthening her in her moral fight for righteousness in the world." Many of the magazine's readers were mothers, and one of the first series of articles that Dreiser commissioned was on the care and feeding of infants by Dr. Leonard K. Hirschberg, articles largely written by H. L. Mencken. Dreiser's relationship with Mencken eventually became one of the most interesting literary relationships of the twentieth century. A wonderful opportunity to obtain an outstanding association copy of one of the groundbreaking literary works of the twentieth century. Though many would not think of Theodore Dreiser as an advocate for women's rights, his first book, SISTER CARRIE, was enlightening in its portrayal of a young single woman's struggle to survive in a post-Victorian urban environment. His work shortly after as editor-in-chief of the magazine THE DELINEATOR, briefly described here, provided further evidence for Dreiser's concern for women's struggle to survive in early 20th century American society. Area of discoloration to the cloth at the upper right front corner; spine mildly sunned. Very Good or better with a fine association [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
