        Mein Kampf

Munich: Franz Eher,, 1925-27. Eine Abrechnung; Die nationalsozialistische Bewegung. 2 volumes, octavo. Original white cloth-backed red cloth (vol. I) and original red cloth (vol. II), spine of vol. I lettered in red and spine of vol. II lettered in white, front covers lettered in white, top edges red. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Hitler to vol. I. Bookstamp of Carl Hugo Mohrlüder on pastedown of vol. I and first 3 leaves of vol. II, and ownership signature to half-title of vol. I, bookseller's ticket to pastedowns. Vol I: spine slightly soiled, couple of tips a little worn, small mark to rear cover, front hinge partly cracked but holding, a couple of marginal pencil markings. Vol. II: spine faded, dampstain to spine partly extending onto covers, lettering a little flaked, front hinge cracked (not visible at endpapers but gauze visible at title page), small mark to rear cover, text block sound. Withal a very good, internally clean, set. First editions, first impressions. The importance of Mein Kampf cannot be understated, and it is certainly a contender for the most influential book of the 20th century. Hitler dictated Mein Kampf to Rudolf Hess in prison, following his arrest after the unsuccessful Munich Putsch in November 1923. When the first volume was published on 18 July 1925 its print run was only 10,000 copies, but Hitler's rise fuelled, and was fuelled by, its sales. By the end of the Second World War, fought on the objectives openly outlined in the book, several million copies had been printed in Germany. Thereafter the German copyright fell to the state of Bavaria, which banned any further publication. When the copyright expired in 2016, a deliberately expensive, unattractive academic publication was produced, which nonetheless became a best-seller and thereby created much domestic and international commentary.

        Poems 1909–1925.

London: Faber & Gwyer Ltd, 1925 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, printed paper label to spine. With the dust jacket. Spine toned, some minor spotting within, an excellent copy with the jacket bright and only lightly rubbed at the extremities. First edition, first impression, in the scarce jacket. The collection selects from Prufrock (1917), Poems (1920), and also prints The Waste Land (1922, here including for the first time the dedication to Ezra Pound as "il miglior fabbro") and The Hollow Men, for which this is the first appearance. A contemporary reader, Robert Brown, dating his ownership inscription Christmas Eve 1926, has intensively annotated this copy, with a veritable essay, and a very learned one at that, covering the half-title and the facing page. Brown's critical annotations to The Waste Land in particular are of great intensity and interest, frequently elucidating not only the source but also the meaning of many literary references in this most referential of poems.         Dark Laughter

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Good -. Octavo, 319pp. A good copy at best in the publisher's black cloth. Spine cocked, hinges gently cracked, and some soiling along the extremities. Internally quite clean, despite external condition. However, this is a marvelous association, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Anderson to "Cornelia" (Cornelia Pratt Lane Anderson), the author's first wife. The two had been divorced for nearly a decade (since not long after his infamous "breakdown" in 1912) when the book came out, but she was the mother of three of Sherwood's children. Thus the economical, yet probably sincere, inscription reads: "To Cornelia, with love, Sherwood." Despite condition, a desirable copy.

(???) Koyosha, Inc, (??)Tokyo 1925 - Rare collection of "Early Modern Architecture," a monthly Japanese magazine which tackled a diverse range of themes, movements and discussions in the fields of architecture and urbanism. Each issue was comprehensively illustrated and accompanied by plans, maps, sections and details. These five consecutive issues of the magazine are entirely dedicated to the famous Paris International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts, a World's fair held in Paris, France, from April to October 1925. This exhibition epitomized what came to be called decades later "Art Deco," a "modern" style characterized by a streamlined classicism, geometric and symmetric compositions, and a sleek machine-age look. Each issue is a quarto size, and has: [1] loose leaf (Title), 20 loose leaves (Plates), as issued. Original printed paper covered portfolio, with string ties. Title leaves in red lettering (for the first four issues), and blue lettering (fifth issue). Each of the five issues contains 20 photographic plates (size: 10 x 7 1/4") reproduced in stunning photogravure, depicting some of the most prominent landmarks of the Paris exhibition, such as: - The Porte d'Honneur: The imposing entranceway designed by the firm Favier & Ventre, provided visitors with a stunningly framed view of the Grand Palais. Simulated stone combined with bronze and wrought iron, illuminated by indirect neon light, to give the entrance a sense of majesty by day and mystery by night. Cast-iron reliefs over the gateways celebrated the dignity of labor. Heralding the entry point was "La France," a monumental statue by Antoine Bourdelle, celebrating the arrival of American fighting forces in France in 1917. - The Hotel du Collectionneur, by Pierre Patout. The striking pavilion was the most ambitious project by an individual designer and the most acclaimed display in the exhibition. It housed a suite of elegant rooms conceived by the leading French furniture maker Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann. Patout himself designed the pavilion, with a vast oval room, the Grand Salon, as its focal point. Ruhlmann brought together many leading artists and designers to decorate the Salon, including Jean Dunand, Jean Dupas, Antoine Bourdelle and Edgar Brandt. - The Porte de la Concorde, a circle of nine towering square columns designed by Patout, with, heralding the entry point, a female nude christened "L'Accueil" (The Welcome) by Louis Dejean.- The Soviet pavilion: A stunning architectural work designed and built by Konstantin Melnikov. The wooden structure, employing a combination of single-sloped roofs of different sizes, was regarded as being one of the most progressive buildings at the fair. Unlike other Paris pavilions, it was completed in less than a month, employing not more than ten workers. - The Pavillon du Tourisme: The Information and Tourism pavilion was designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens, one of the most influential figures in French architecture between the two World Wars. The structure is splendidly enhanced by its 118-feet-tall (36m) campanile. - Le Pavillon des 4 Tours: The four-tower pavilion (Restaurants and French wines) was designed by architect Charles Plumet.- The Pavillon des Editions G. Crès et Cie, designed by Georges Beau, Joseph Hiriart, and Georges Henri Tribout. An impressive building with its most interesting sheltered double entrance. The facade was designed to look like three partially opened books. - The Village du Jouet (Toy Village) designed by Peltier Frères. - The Dutch pavilion designed by J. F. Staal. Typical of Amsterdam School aesthetics, the building was an astonishing "tour de force," demonstrating the great skill of the Dutch bricklayer. Made of brick, it combined expressive decoration with exotic forms and motifs. - The church-like British pavilion designed by architects Easton & Robertson. - The Danish pavilion, by architect Kay Fisker. - The "Au Bon Marché" pavilion, a magnificent building designed by Louis-Hippolyte Boileau.         Kwadraty (Squares) [Poetry collection]

Nakladem Zamojskiego Kola Milosników Ksiazki, Zamosc; (Zamojski's Circle of Book Lovers, Zamość) 1925 - Polish language. Octavo 15 x 23 cm. Weight 40 gr. Wrappers, 30 [2] pp. Print run 1000 copies. The Book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Soft creases across corners, some small stress lines to the spine, foxing spots on the back cover, stamp on the front cover dated by April 16, 1925 indicating that the current book copy of 1000 printed is obligatory copy of Zamosc Voivodeship "Starostwo Zamojskim. Egzemplarz obowiazkowy. Naklad 1000 egz. 16 kwiecien 1925." Bibliophilic, originally designed second poetry collection includes 21 poems with a strong Futurist and Dadaist orientation. Author's radical poetic experiment consists in using language and dictionary accentuating new rhythmic qualities and establishing new interesting figures of sound. Verbal sound effects is stressed by experimental avant-garde typography - handmade typewriter font, different size of the letters, unusual lines layout etc. But the main thing that distinguishes current work from other futurist poets writings is the author's desire to combine avant-garde trends with literary tradition. He wrote typical Futurist poems containing a strong folk elements. Unlike other futurist poets attitude towards modern civilization here is more complex. As a true futurist, author was fascinated with technology, but at the same time he feared its consequences and turned towards folklore as the only sphere that had preserved unspoiled human nature and the simple forms of life. Thus, he explored the resources of the folklore tradition and used them in his poetry in an attempt to enrich 20th-century civilization with the values preserved within that tradition. After this publication author moved away from Futurism towards the idea of modernist rural literature. But, later works along with local dialect stylization and rhythms of folk songs still combined with the avant-garde idea of "freedom of expression”. Modernist graphic cover design of the current book created by artist and author's wife Wanda Mlodozeniec. Stanislaw Mlodozeniec (1895-1959) one of the leading representatives of the avant-garde in Polish poetry of the 20th century, and a founder of Polish futurism. Was close with the members of Polish avant-garde movement "Formists". At the turn of 1919/1920 founded the futurist club Katarynka (Hurdy-Gurdy) around which centered Krakow futurism, and participated in futurist activities. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Along the Road. Notes and Essays of a Tourist

1925 - First edition. 8vo., original blue cloth, dust jacket. London, Chatto & Windus. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: ?For Jake Zeitlin, our guide, philosopher and friend in the west, from Aldous Huxley, 1937? Zeitlin was the famous Los Angeles book dealer and publisher who, in 1937, suggested that Huxley adapt his work for film, and proposed himself as an intermediary. ?Zeitlin came to the ranch in August to discuss the possibility of turning novels like Antic Hay ('there is good comic material here' Huxley had told him) and 'The Gioconda Smile' into film scripts. Huxley admitted that ?'Point Counter Point' and 'Eyeless in Gaza' were 'probably a bit long and complicated' to be Hollywood material? (Murray). Up to this point Huxley had always ?fulminated against the new forms of mass entertainment?; nonetheless, he asked Zeitlin to make some ?tactful enquiries? Spine label browned and nicked, otherwise an excellent copy in dust jacket, nicked at the edges and torn on the upper cover. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Photo Album]: U.S.S. Saturn: Alaska, California, Mexico

Alaska, California, 1925. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto. Black cloth over paper boards measuring 7" x 10.5". Contains 288 sepia toned photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1.5" and 3.5" x 5.5" affixed to stiff black paper with captions. Very good album with edgewear and tears on some of the pages with very good or better photographs with some creasing and edgewear. An expansive photo album kept between the early 1900s and the 1920s of various trips in California, Alaska, and Mexico both touristic and military, many were taken by a sailor, probably from Napa, California, while cruising on the U.S.S. Saturn. Many of the photos not taken on shipboard show groups of people posing around 1920s model cars and their homes in Napa. The family is featured on beaches throughout California and various other locations in Napa including Napa State Hospital. One member of the family was involved with shipbuilding and was part of the crew and maintenance of multiple vessels including the U.S.S. Milwaukee and the U.S.S. Saturn. The latter was deployed to Mexico as a means of protecting the United States while Mexico was in the midst of it's civil war. There are numerous photos throughout the album of the mission including Mexican generals, towns, and onboard activities of the crew. The Saturn was later sent to Alaska as communications support providing radio service to keep Alaska in touch with bases in the continental United States. These photos include the working of the radio station, along with exterior shots of the building, a photo of a band playing on board dubbed the Saturn's "orchestra," and a silly photo of men falling from a rail car which reads, "end of a joyride." The Saturn also made stops in Honolulu, seen here with shots of palm trees and beaches, as well as a trip through the Panama Canal. It seems that in between assignments crew members found it's way back to Napa and enjoyed the sights of California. There are numerous photos on the sea, including one of a passenger "feeding the fish" while being sick, and of a few storms that they endured, as well as incredible photos of ships and shipyards displaying the iron work and intricacies of the massive ships. An interesting collection of photos showing the many missions of the U.S.S. Saturn.

Death in Venice and Other Stories.

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1925 - First edition in English preceding the British edition by three years of Mann's classic novel. Octavo, original cloth, patterned endpapers. Translated from the German by Kenneth Burke. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with some light expert restoration to the crown of the spine. First editions are rare, especially in the original dust jacket. "Thomas Mann is one of the greatest and most widely read authors of the 20th century. An innovative stylist and synthesizer of the intellectual trends of his time, Mann exerted much influence on modern fiction not only in Germany but in Europe and in both Americas as well. His perceptiveness as an interpreter of Western cultural heritage and his skill as a cosmopolitan teacher of democratic and humanistic values earned him recognition as a 'mirror of his age' and a 'citizen of the world'. Among Mann's many well-written works of short fiction, "Death in Venice" (1928), a novella based on Mann's impressions during his stay in Venice, is the most famous. Typically for Mann, the novella deals with the problem of the unhappy, sick artist, Gustav von Aschenbach, who envies the healthy and 'normal' people of the bourgeois society" (Pribic, 262-3). Small discoloration on the front board over the "SB" in Gatsby, otherise a clean copy of the book. Lacking the rare dust jacket. Despite its grand stature today, the book was a commercial failure during Fitzgerald's lifetime, much to the author's surprise and disappointment. Fitzgerald had felt the power of the novel and believed that it was a work of mature artistry. Modern scholars and readers agree and now "Gatsby" is a keystone of any modern first collection.
