[Photo Album]: U.S.S. Saturn: Alaska, California, Mexico

Alaska, California, 1925. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto. Black cloth over paper boards measuring 7" x 10.5". Contains 288 sepia toned photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1.5" and 3.5" x 5.5" affixed to stiff black paper with captions. Very good album with edgewear and tears on some of the pages with very good or better photographs with some creasing and edgewear. An expansive photo album kept between the early 1900s and the 1920s of various trips in California, Alaska, and Mexico both touristic and military, many were taken by a sailor, probably from Napa, California, while cruising on the U.S.S. Saturn. Many of the photos not taken on shipboard show groups of people posing around 1920s model cars and their homes in Napa. The family is featured on beaches throughout California and various other locations in Napa including Napa State Hospital. One member of the family was involved with shipbuilding and was part of the crew and maintenance of multiple vessels including the U.S.S. Milwaukee and the U.S.S. Saturn. The latter was deployed to Mexico as a means of protecting the United States while Mexico was in the midst of it's civil war. There are numerous photos throughout the album of the mission including Mexican generals, towns, and onboard activities of the crew. The Saturn was later sent to Alaska as communications support providing radio service to keep Alaska in touch with bases in the continental United States. These photos include the working of the radio station, along with exterior shots of the building, a photo of a band playing on board dubbed the Saturn's "orchestra," and a silly photo of men falling from a rail car which reads, "end of a joyride." The Saturn also made stops in Honolulu, seen here with shots of palm trees and beaches, as well as a trip through the Panama Canal. It seems that in between assignments crew members found it's way back to Napa and enjoyed the sights of California. There are numerous photos on the sea, including one of a passenger "feeding the fish" while being sick, and of a few storms that they endured, as well as incredible photos of ships and shipyards displaying the iron work and intricacies of the massive ships. An interesting collection of photos showing the many missions of the U.S.S. Saturn.

Death in Venice and Other Stories.

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1925 - First edition in English preceding the British edition by three years of Mann's classic novel. Octavo, original cloth, patterned endpapers. Translated from the German by Kenneth Burke. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with some light expert restoration to the crown of the spine. First editions are rare, especially in the original dust jacket. "Thomas Mann is one of the greatest and most widely read authors of the 20th century. An innovative stylist and synthesizer of the intellectual trends of his time, Mann exerted much influence on modern fiction not only in Germany but in Europe and in both Americas as well. His perceptiveness as an interpreter of Western cultural heritage and his skill as a cosmopolitan teacher of democratic and humanistic values earned him recognition as a 'mirror of his age' and a 'citizen of the world'. Among Mann's many well-written works of short fiction, "Death in Venice" (1928), a novella based on Mann's impressions during his stay in Venice, is the most famous. Typically for Mann, the novella deals with the problem of the unhappy, sick artist, Gustav von Aschenbach, who envies the healthy and 'normal' people of the bourgeois society" (Pribic, 262-3).         Richard Strauss Signed Program.

1925 - Richard Strauss signed program. The program was for a concert by the Dusseldorf City Orchestra and Richard Strauss, held April 30, 1925. The program measures 6.5 inches by 8.75 inches. Double matted and framed opposite a photograph of Strauss. The entire piece measures 14.5 inches by 17.5 inches. Richard Strauss was a leading German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras. He is known for his operas, which include Der Rosenkavalier, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Salome; his Lieder, especially his Four Last Songs; his tone poems, including Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Also sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben, Symphonia Domestica, and An Alpine Symphony; and other instrumental works such as Metamorphosen and his Oboe Concerto. Strauss was also a prominent conductor in Western Europe and the Americas, enjoying quasi-celebrity status as his compositions became standards of orchestral and operatic repertoire. Strauss, along with Gustav Mahler, represents the late flowering of German Romanticism after Richard Wagner, in which pioneering subtleties of orchestration are combined with an advanced harmonic style [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Original Pen and Ink Illustration of Romantic Couple on the Golf Course

McClure's 1925 - Pen and ink and wash illustration on Bainbridge artists board. Approximately 15" x 10". Thin line of offsetting or mat burn at the very edges, evidence of previous matting on verso, stamped "McClure's" and pencil note "September, 1925" on verso, very good or better. Image of a young lothario staring intently into the eyes of a flapper with bobbed-haired on the ninth hole of a golf course, while a balding and bespectacled elder gentleman, presumably the flapper's father, takes aim with his club at the cranium of the romantic swain. After a good run as a respected news and literary magazine McClure's remade itself as a women's magazine, and published sporadically until it sputtered to a halt in early 1926. Apparently there was no September 1925 issue of McClure's but we assume this was intended to accompany a story there.
