        Autograph letter signed.

Wiesbaden, 26. I. 1925. - 4to. 1 page. To the Kunsthaus Schaller in Stuttgart about the price of Robert Delaunay's painting "La ville No. 1": " In possession of your letter from January 24, I hurry to inform you that I consider 1500 [Reichsmark] as far too little. I would definitely not go into it if I, unfortunately, were not in financial difficulties at the moment, but you might be able to obtain a price of 1800 [Reichsmark]. If it is not possible at all, I must agree to 1500 [.] " (transl from the German original). - Jawlensky had acquired the painting at the first exhibition of the Blue Rider in Munich in 1912. In 1924/25 he tried to sell the work. Today it is considered lost. - Some marginalia in red pencil, probably from the hand of the gallery owner. - Left margin with punched holes (not touching text) and with receipt stamp.

The Boer War and First World War Photo Albums of Edith H. Hordley, British Nursing Sister and Principal Matron of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service

[South Africa; France; Egypt] 1925 - An archive of photo albums, post cards and ephemera, compiled by Edith H. Hordley a prominent British Nursing Sister who served in the Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service Reserve during the Second Boer War from 1900-1902 and later joined Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) in 1903. During the First World War she attained the rank of Principal Matron and was awarded the Royal Red Cross (First Class) in 1916.The collection contains well over 300 snap shot images from 1900-02 documenting Hordley's work and associated travels in South Africa, including images of Nursing Sisters, soldiers and officers, and South Africans (including refugees, laborers, and tribal members), at field hospitals, camps, and towns in and around Pretoria, Bloemfonsein, and elsewhere in the Transvaal; and in around Cape Town, Queenstown, and elsewhere in Cape Colony. Also included are about 75 real photo and color printed post cards compiled by Hordley during the First World War when she was stationed with the British Expeditionary Force in northern France, and an additional album of over 100 prints documenting her work after the War at a military hospital in Alexandria, Egypt.Edith Helen Hordley (c.1872-1953), a pupil at the Orme Girls' School from 1882 to 1890, sailed to South Africa on July 2, 1900 and received the Queen's Medal and King's Medal for her service there during the war. We know from evidence in the albums that she worked at an Imperial Yeomanry Branch Hospital in the Transvaal and at a military hospital in Wynberg, Cape Town. It is likely that while in South Africa she met Emma Maud McCarthy, who later became the most celebrated leader of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service when she served as Hordley's Matron-in-Chief with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders during the First World War. Both women joined the QAIMNS immediately after its founding in 1902 and both must have been lifelong friends. McCarthy frequently refers to Hordley throughout her War Diary from 1914-1919, and for about six months in 1917 Hordley served as Acting Matron-in-Chief when McCarthy was taken ill with appendicitis. An historically important and compelling personal archive of a leading member of the British military nursing service, dating from a time when the military actively discouraged women from documenting their wartime services, and also destroyed many official records.A detailed list follows.A. Three Photo AlbumsThe Second Boer War: Images of the Transvaal/South African Republic (Pretoria, Bloemfontein), Queenstown, and Cape Colony/Cape Town, 1900-1902.[1]. Oblong quarto. Cloth over boards (13.25" x 10.75"): Pretoria/Transvaal.Contains about 180 albumen and collodion prints of various sizes (6" x 8" and smaller), laid-down on 22 double-sided cardboard leaves (including about 20 prints laid-in). About a quarter are studio photographs captioned in white. Very good. Several images of Nursing Sisters at the Imperial Yeomanry Branch Hospital in Pretoria; various informal group portraits of British soldiers/officers and Nursing Sisters; views of camps, field hospitals, and hospital wards; close-up shots of soldiers/officers in beds or outside of the tents; Nursing Sisters (and other women) with soldiers/officers, at work and at leisure outdoors and indoors; images of South Africans and soldiers in the streets of Pretoria and at field camps (includes one print of several young South African boys working at a mine). Also included is a comic color ink drawing of a wounded soldier and two Nursing Sisters: "Overheard!!! . Two Sisters disagree on a point of diagnosis!" Among the studio photographs captioned in white are images of Gen. Roberts' staff saluting the British flag (Pretoria, 1900); Lord Kitchener and other military leaders; Lord Kitchener leaving for his afternoon ride, 1901; several images of field hospitals and camps; several views of Pretoria city.[2]. Oblong quarto. Stiff paper covers (12.75"

Album of Original Photographs from three Arctic expeditions commanded by Donald Baxter MacMillan

[Labrador, Baffin Island, Ellesmere Island, and Greenland 1925 - 83 silver gelatin photographs, plus 4 photo postcards, most approximately 3 x 5 inches. Manuscript captions on supports in white pencil throughout. Contemporary black leather, cord-tied photo album. A lively collection of photographs documenting an important series of 20th century Arctic voyages. A collection of eighty-seven images from three different Arctic voyages commanded or co-commanded by Donald Baxter MacMillan in the early 1920s. MacMillan made over thirty voyages to the Arctic during a nearly fifty year career that spanned the first half of the 20th century. After World War I, he designed and commissioned his own schooner, named the Bowdoin , specifically for Arctic exploration. The photos in this album document the first two expeditions made by the craft to Baffin Island in 1921-22, and to North Greenland, Ellesmere Island, and several other locations in 1923-24, as well as a third exploration, also to Greenland, made jointly with another ship called the Peary in 1925. The present images depict many views of the Bowdoin and the Peary , as well as sea planes transported into the Arctic by the Peary for testing, detail features of the passing landscape, seascape, and document local wildlife. Further photos show the activities of the men in camp and in the course of their duties, such as building, dog sledding, hiking, and ship loading. Finally, a number of pictures record the lives of the native Eskimo populations and show the ruins of building left by early Norse explorers. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Poems 1909–1925.

London: Faber & Gwyer Ltd,, 1925. Octavo. Original blue cloth, printed paper label to spine. With the dust jacket. Spine toned, some minor spotting within, an excellent copy with the jacket bright and only lightly rubbed at the extremities. First edition, first impression, in the scarce jacket. The collection selects from Prufrock (1917), Poems (1920), and also prints The Waste Land (1922, here including for the first time the dedication to Ezra Pound as "il miglior fabbro") and The Hollow Men, for which this is the first appearance. A contemporary reader, Robert Brown, dating his ownership inscription Christmas Eve 1926, has intensively annotated this copy, with a veritable essay, and a very learned one at that, covering the half-title and the facing page. Brown's critical annotations to The Waste Land in particular are of great intensity and interest, frequently elucidating not only the source but also the meaning of many literary references in this most referential of poems.

        L'Annonciation Roman

Exceedingly rare 245 pp. novel about Parisian and Russian art, illustrated with four full-page plates, one from each of the important French and Russian artists Édouard Chimot, André Dignimont, Natalia Goncharova, and Mikhail Larionov, and an additional cul-de-lampe by Goncharova. 8vo. Orig. printed publisher's wrpps. Cover restored and reinforced. Paris (Henri Reynaud) 1925. One of a limited edition of 240 copies printed for subscribers and not generally for sale, this being one of 15 copies printed on Japan paper. George Isarlov was an Iranian writer and critic of French art, who most notably contributed an art column to the journal Combat. He authored many works of reference on artists including Picabia and Braque. The artists who are featured in this novel were all important in their own rights: Chimot was best known for the high quality art books he created in Paris in the 1920s. Dignimont worked in the Montmarte school and was noted for his book illustration and scenographic design. Goncharova and Larionov were lifelong romantic partners and both important figures in the Russian avant-garde movement, with Larionov being responsible for the founding of two important artistic groups, Jack of Diamonds and Donkey's Tail. Very scarce; as of November 2017, WorldCat locates only a single copy in North America.

        Mein Kampf

Munich: Franz Eher,, 1925-27. Eine Abrechnung; Die nationalsozialistische Bewegung. 2 volumes, octavo. Original white cloth-backed red cloth (vol. I) and original red cloth (vol. II), spine of vol. I lettered in red and spine of vol. II lettered in white, front covers lettered in white, top edges red. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Hitler to vol. I. Bookstamp of Carl Hugo Mohrlüder on pastedown of vol. I and first 3 leaves of vol. II, and ownership signature to half-title of vol. I, bookseller's ticket to pastedowns. Vol I: spine slightly soiled, couple of tips a little worn, small mark to rear cover, front hinge partly cracked but holding, a couple of marginal pencil markings. Vol. II: spine faded, dampstain to spine partly extending onto covers, lettering a little flaked, front hinge cracked (not visible at endpapers but gauze visible at title page), small mark to rear cover, text block sound. Withal a very good, internally clean, set. First editions, first impressions. The importance of Mein Kampf cannot be understated, and it is certainly a contender for the most influential book of the 20th century. Hitler dictated Mein Kampf to Rudolf Hess in prison, following his arrest after the unsuccessful Munich Putsch in November 1923. When the first volume was published on 18 July 1925 its print run was only 10,000 copies, but Hitler's rise fuelled, and was fuelled by, its sales. By the end of the Second World War, fought on the objectives openly outlined in the book, several million copies had been printed in Germany. Thereafter the German copyright fell to the state of Bavaria, which banned any further publication. When the copyright expired in 2016, a deliberately expensive, unattractive academic publication was produced, which nonetheless became a best-seller and thereby created much domestic and international commentary.

        The Secret of Chimneys.

London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1925.. [Mystery novel] FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.[xii]; 306; [2], advertisements. Publisher's light blue cloth, titled and decorated in black. A gently used copy with some minor rubbing and wear, bump to upper corner, owner name to flyleaf. The cloth is particularly bright with no darkening/change in colour to the backstrip. Most uncommon thus. The combined forces of Scotland Yard and the French Surete can do no better than go in circles - until the final murder at Chimneys, the great country estate that yields up an amazing secret. The first novel to feature Superintendent Battle and 'Bundle' Brent.

        Poems 1909–1925.

London: Faber & Gwyer Ltd, 1925 - Octavo. Dark Laughter

Boni and Liveright, New York 1925 - Octavo, 319pp. A good copy at best in the publisher's black cloth. Spine cocked, hinges gently cracked, and some soiling along the extremities. Internally quite clean, despite external condition. However, this is a marvelous association, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Anderson to "Cornelia" (Cornelia Pratt Lane Anderson), the author's first wife. The two had been divorced for nearly a decade (since not long after his infamous "breakdown" in 1912) when the book came out, but she was the mother of three of Sherwood's children. Thus the economical, yet probably sincere, inscription reads: "To Cornelia, with love, Sherwood." Despite condition, a desirable copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

(???) Koyosha, Inc, (??)Tokyo 1925 - Rare collection of "Early Modern Architecture," a monthly Japanese magazine which tackled a diverse range of themes, movements and discussions in the fields of architecture and urbanism. Each issue was comprehensively illustrated and accompanied by plans, maps, sections and details. These five consecutive issues of the magazine are entirely dedicated to the famous Paris International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts, a World's fair held in Paris, France, from April to October 1925. This exhibition epitomized what came to be called decades later "Art Deco," a "modern" style characterized by a streamlined classicism, geometric and symmetric compositions, and a sleek machine-age look. Each issue is a quarto size, and has: [1] loose leaf (Title), 20 loose leaves (Plates), as issued. Original printed paper covered portfolio, with string ties. Title leaves in red lettering (for the first four issues), and blue lettering (fifth issue). Each of the five issues contains 20 photographic plates (size: 10 x 7 1/4") reproduced in stunning photogravure, depicting some of the most prominent landmarks of the Paris exhibition, such as: - The Porte d'Honneur: The imposing entranceway designed by the firm Favier & Ventre, provided visitors with a stunningly framed view of the Grand Palais. Simulated stone combined with bronze and wrought iron, illuminated by indirect neon light, to give the entrance a sense of majesty by day and mystery by night. Cast-iron reliefs over the gateways celebrated the dignity of labor. Heralding the entry point was "La France," a monumental statue by Antoine Bourdelle, celebrating the arrival of American fighting forces in France in 1917. - The Hotel du Collectionneur, by Pierre Patout. The striking pavilion was the most ambitious project by an individual designer and the most acclaimed display in the exhibition. It housed a suite of elegant rooms conceived by the leading French furniture maker Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann. Patout himself designed the pavilion, with a vast oval room, the Grand Salon, as its focal point. Ruhlmann brought together many leading artists and designers to decorate the Salon, including Jean Dunand, Jean Dupas, Antoine Bourdelle and Edgar Brandt. - The Porte de la Concorde, a circle of nine towering square columns designed by Patout, with, heralding the entry point, a female nude christened "L'Accueil" (The Welcome) by Louis Dejean.- The Soviet pavilion: A stunning architectural work designed and built by Konstantin Melnikov. The wooden structure, employing a combination of single-sloped roofs of different sizes, was regarded as being one of the most progressive buildings at the fair. Unlike other Paris pavilions, it was completed in less than a month, employing not more than ten workers. - The Pavillon du Tourisme: The Information and Tourism pavilion was designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens, one of the most influential figures in French architecture between the two World Wars. The structure is splendidly enhanced by its 118-feet-tall (36m) campanile. - Le Pavillon des 4 Tours: The four-tower pavilion (Restaurants and French wines) was designed by architect Charles Plumet.- The Pavillon des Editions G. Crès et Cie, designed by Georges Beau, Joseph Hiriart, and Georges Henri Tribout. An impressive building with its most interesting sheltered double entrance. The facade was designed to look like three partially opened books. - The Village du Jouet (Toy Village) designed by Peltier Frères. - The Dutch pavilion designed by J. F. Staal. Typical of Amsterdam School aesthetics, the building was an astonishing "tour de force," demonstrating the great skill of the Dutch bricklayer. Made of brick, it combined expressive decoration with exotic forms and motifs. - The church-like British pavilion designed by architects Easton & Robertson. - The Danish pavilion, by architect Kay Fisker. - The "Au Bon Marché" pavilion, a magnificent building designed by Louis-Hippolyte Boileau. Its rectangular [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
