        The Female Figure (First Edition)

New York: Arthur Allen Studios, 1925. Photo album portfolio sold to subscribers by Allen from his Arthur Allen Studios circa 1915-1925, containing more than 40 pages of original nude photographic prints pasted onto stiff pages. Each photo is discreetly rubber stamped (1 to 40) at the bottom right corner. Each leaf has between two and four different images, with many leaves showing four separate poses of the same model. The final three pages of the portfolio were issued blank, but include 22 additional contemporary photographic and card stock images tipped in, likely their intended use by the publisher. The first page includes a tipped in title page and a bound in brochure announcing this particular series (along with a pencil note, "Received 19 Ap 1923") and predicting: "We are entering a period of nudity." Allen (1886-1962) was a pioneer in nude photography who was unique in that his models displayed certain regions of the female form not documented by other photographers of the time. Allen claimed this was not for salacious reasons, but rather his earnest attempt to display the entirety of nude figure for artistic and "democratic" ideals. He explained in his biography, "To see womankind entirely nude would place all women on equality. And it would be only their true mental and physical charm that would lift them from the ordinary." Allen was arrested and indicted on several occasions during the 1920s for distributing obscene material but continued undaunted. He further pushed the boundaries with a portfolio of women from other races and a film of nude woman performing choreographed routines and military drills. Eventually he became a photographer for the Elysium Foundation, a nudist society, before fading into obscurity. An interesting and arresting (how could we resist) collection of images from the early part of the twentieth century by an unsung pioneer in nude photography. Quarto. 40 pages, string bound textured paper wrappers. Very Good overall. Moderate wear to the extremities with some waviness to the pages and some photos lifting at the corners but all still firmly secured.

THE UNITED STATES CENTS OF THE YEARS 1801-1802-1803

Detroit, 1925. 4to, original brown cloth, gilt. 85, (1) pages; 5 fine photographic plates; addition slip tipped in on page 73. Green silk marker with the cardboard cent gauge present. A few authorial annotations in pencil; additional pencil annotations in another hand. Loosely laid in are the July 1931 photographic supplemental plate describing and depicting new 1801 varieties and the January 1928 photographic supplemental plate describing and depicting a new 1803 variety. Inscribed to Robert C. Slone by the author on a front blank. A fine copy. One of the major pre-Sheldon works on U.S. large cents; scarce with both supplementary plates. Concerning Newcomb and this work, Dr. Sheldon wrote: "during the first quarter of the twentieth century and until his death in 1945, Howard R. Newcomb was so closely identified with the big cents that to mention cents was to mention Newcomb... The United States Cents of the Years 1801-1802-1803 ... marks a milestone in the cent literature. Approaching a field which had been left almost in chaos by the Doughty book, Newcomb assembled a vast quantity of numismatic material, ordered and reordered it, finally set up a new classificational system and a list which seemed adequate; and after testing the new list for upwards of a decade, published. The verdict of time on this work has been favorable." About as nice a copy as one will ever see. Davis 745. Voted as one of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society's "One Hundred Greatest Items of United States Numismatic Literature."

[Photo Album]: Hunting and Fishing in New England and Canada 1925-1930

Oblong octavo. Measuring 11.75" x 7.25". String-tied flexible cloth with "Photographs" stamped on the top board. Modest edgewear on the boards, near fine. Contains 272 black and white gelatin silver photographs. Images are various sizes between 1.75" x 2.75" and 3.25" x 4.75", mostly mounted between three and six to a page; one addition 6" x 9" photo on the last page is of a mounted buck . One or two have fallen out or are otherwise lacking, but clearly the album hasn't been pillaged. A few are faded, most are near fine or better. The vast majority are captioned. A beautifully composed and photographed album of hunting and fishing trips in Canada (Quebec, Ontario), and many locations in New England, and the Adirondacks between 1925 and 1930, with one trip to Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia. Most of the trips seemed to be month or even season-long family trips and are dominated by the proud display of catches of fish and game. Locations are clearly identified, including Lake Chaplain and Bingham Fall, Vermont; Vanderwhacker Mountain and Lake Placid, New York; Lac La Croix and Lac Rognon in Canada; to name a few. While there are many typical camping scenes, the majority are of people in the field, with catches of minks, rabbits, bucks, and various fish proudly displayed by both male and female sporting folk. An unusually nice, well-captioned and finely realized subject specific album. .

        The Great Gatsby.

Charles Scribners, New York 1925 - First edition, first state with "chatter" p.60, "northern" p.119, "sick in tired" p.205, and "Union Street station" p. 211. Octavo, original dark green cloth. In near fine condition, with the gilt lettering to the spine bright, light rubbing to the endpaper. In 1922, Fitzgerald announced his decision to write "something new--something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." That extraordinary, beautiful, intricately patterned, and above all, simple novel became The Great Gatsby, arguably Fitzgerald's finest work and certainly the book for which he is best known. A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, Gatsby captured the spirit of the author's generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Cyril Connolly called The Great Gatsby one of the half dozen best American novels: "Gatsby remains a prose poem of delight and sadness which has by now introduced two generations to the romance of America, as Huckleberry Finn and Leaves of Grass introduced those before it" (Modern Movement 48).         The Great Gatsby

New York: Charles Scribners, 1925. First edition, first state. Sheilah Graham's copy with her signature to the front free endpaper. Graham, one of the most influential gossip columnists in Hollywood, is remembered today as the last lover of novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald, their relationship through her autobiographical account of that period, Beloved Infidel, a best-seller, which was also made into a film. In her youth, she was a freelance writer for Fleet Street in London, and had published several short stories and two novels. These early experiences would converge in her career in Hollywood, that spanned nearly four decades, as a successful columnist and author. In a letter from May 1940 to S.J. Perelman, Fitzgerald invited him to visit, promising "Sheilah will be with me, just as merry as can be, to greet you on the porch with a julep" (Letters, Turnbull, ed., 1963). Little more than six months later it was Graham who would find Fitzgerald at home dead of a heart attack. Bruccoli A11.1.a; Connolly, The Modern Movement 48.with "chatter" p.60, "northern" p.119, "sick in tired" p.205, and "Union Street station" p. 211. Octavo, original dark green cloth. In fine condition, with the gilt lettering to the spine bright. A significant association. The Great Gatsby

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1925 - First issue, with the four main issue points present: 1) pg. 60, line 16 "chatter" 2) pg. 119, line 22 "northern" 3) pg. 205, lines 9-10 "sick in tired" 4) pg. 211, lines 7-8 "Union Street station." A Very Good + copy with touches of wear at the spine ends and light mottling of the cloth on the front board. Internal contents gernally in excellent condition, although with a small stain on pages 4-5 and a previous owner's name erased from the front paste-down a bit aggressively.Despite its grand stature today, the book was a commercial failure during Fitzgerald's lifetime, much to the author's surprise and disappointment. Fitzgerald had felt the power of the novel and believed that it was a work of mature artistry. Modern scholars and readers agree and now "Gatsby" is a keystone of any modern first collection. Very Good +. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Book of American Negro Spirituals. Edited with an Introduction by James Weldon Johnson. Musical arrangements by J. Rosamond Johnson.

4to., original cloth lettered on spine and upper board. A very good copy. First edition. Inscribed by James Johnson "For George Gershwin, Sincerely James Weldon Johnson". Howard Pollack in his George Gershwin: His Life and Work comments "Of the black artists associated with Van Vechten, Gershwin established a special closeness with brothers James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson. In earlier years, the Johnsons had been a songwriting team much like the Gershwins with attorney James Weldon the scholarly lyricist and New England Conservatory graduate J. Rosamond the well trained composer. In the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance, the Johnson brothers also cultivated an interest in African American folk music. In 1925 and 1926, at the movement's zenith, they brought forth two volumes of Negro Spirituals. Each spiritual bore a dedication to some friend or hero including Booker T Washington and W.E.B, Du Bois, dedications that taken together helped chart the social terrain of the Harlem Renaissance. They dedicated "In Dat Great Gittin' Up Mornin'" (In the Second Volume) to Gershwin who was, with Percy Grainger and Fritz Kreisler, one of the small number of white composers so honoured...James Weldon, on hearing of Gershwin's death, sent Ira a telegram stating, "America has lost a great composer. Personally I feel his loss as a friend." The importance of Negro spirituals on Gershwin is readily apparent. In 1925, the year this book was published, he declared "I think it [Jazz Opera] should be a Negro opera, almost a Negro 'Scheherazade'. Negro, because it is not incongruous for a Negro to live jazz. It would not be absurd on the stage. The mood could change from ecstasy to lyricism plausibly because the Negro has so much of both in his nature. That type of opera could not, I am afraid, be done at the Metropolitan. It is a typically opera comique venture. I would like to see it put on with a Negro cast. Artists trained in the old tradition could not sing such music, but Negro singers could. It would be a sensation as well as an innovation." Pollack again comments, "Throughout the remainder of 1925, Gershwin occasionally voiced his intention of writing an opera for African American singers, adding that Carl Van Vechten was helping him find "a suitable libretto". "I shall certainly write an opera", he stated in the fall. "I shall write it for niggers. Blacks sing beautifully. They are always singing; they have it in their blood. They have jazz in their blood too, and I have no doubt that they will be able to do full justice to a jazz opera." The gestation of Gershwin's 'jazz opera' into Porgy and Bess did not see fulfilment until the 1930's. "The opera's distinctive absorbtion of African American oratory and music underpins its great individuality, including allusions to a wide range of black popular music from W.C. Handy to Cab Calloway; and black folk music, from street cries and children's ditties to, above all, the Negro spiritual, which informs not only many of the opera's songs and choruses but its recitatives as well."
