        Jean-Christophe

Paris: Albin Michel, 1925-1927. First edition thus. Five volume set, being number XLVIII of 100, printed on Hollande van Gelder after 12 on Japon (Ritter 32). Typographic wrappers (26 cm. tall), printed in red and black, well-preserved in later glassines, with some bumping to corners and aome browning to spines of first and third volumes. Professional repair to front hinge of fifth volume. Some foxing to handful of margins, not affecting plates. With 666 woodcuts by Masereel, many full page. Title pages printed in red and black; text printed in black with red borders. Contents across five volumes being: 281; 345; 270; 290; and 333 pages. Rolland's prophetic pre-WWI Bildungsroman is here revisited in the Weimar era, richly-illustrated by his good friend Masereel. Possibly one of Masereel's most subtle works as illustrator, with his 666 images resting quite reverential to the text. A remarkably fresh set of the fine van Gelder printing.

129 pp. rare first and only issue of the serial, edited by Richard Linsert and related to paragraph 175 of the German criminal code which made homosexual acts between men a crime, and the proposal in 1925 under the guise of the "protection of public health" to increase the penalties associated with committed acts as well as a new paragraph 297 which would have made "qualified cases" such as homosexual prostitution and sex with minors "severe cases" classified as felonies instead of misdemeanors, and including opinions from important cultural figures including Adolf Behne, Alfred Döblin, Albert Einstein, Max Hermann-Neiße, Kurt Hiller, Theodor Lessing, Ernst Toller, Bruno Vogel, and others.         The Fundamental Equations of Quantum Mechanics

The Royal Society, London 1925 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Dirac's first major paper; a major achievement in the advancement of the new quantum theory. "Dirac's first step into a new quantum theory was taken late in September 1925. R H Fowler, his research supervisor, had received a proof copy of an exploratory paper by Werner Heisenberg in the framework of the old quantum theory of Bohr and Sommerfeld, which leaned heavily on Bohr's correspondence principle but changed the equations so that they involved directly observable quantities. Fowler sent Heisenberg's paper on to Dirac, who was on vacation in Bristol, asking him to look into this paper carefully. Dirac's attention was drawn to a mysterious mathematical relationship, at first sight unintelligible, that Heisenberg had reached. Several weeks later, back in Cambridge, Dirac suddenly recognized that this mathematical form had the same structure as the Poisson Brackets that occur in the classical dynamics of particle motion. From this thought he quickly developed a quantum theory that was based on non-commuting dynamical variables. This led him to a more profound and significant general formulation of quantum mechanics than was achieved by any other worker in this field. This was a major achievement that marked him out from others in the field. As a young, 25-year-old physicist he was quickly accepted by outstanding physicists. Dirac's quantum mechanics takes a simple and beautiful form, with a structure showing elegance and economy of concept, and linked directly with the classical theory" (Dalitz, Paul Dirac). Provenance: With stamp of City & Guilds College on front and back of wrappers; presentation bookplate from Professor William Ernest Dalby (Dean of the College) loosely affixed to first page. IN: Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Series A, Vol. 109, pp. 642-653. London: The Royal Society, 1925. Octavo, original wrappers; custom box. Light wear to spine; mild soiling.         [Photo Album]: U.S.S. Saturn: Alaska, California, Mexico

Alaska, California, 1925. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto. Black cloth over paper boards measuring 7" x 10.5". Contains 288 sepia toned photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1.5" and 3.5" x 5.5" affixed to stiff black paper with captions. Very good album with edgewear and tears on some of the pages with very good or better photographs with some creasing and edgewear. An expansive photo album kept between the early 1900s and the 1920s of various trips in California, Alaska, and Mexico both touristic and military, many were taken by a sailor, probably from Napa, California, while cruising on the U.S.S. Saturn. Many of the photos not taken on shipboard show groups of people posing around 1920s model cars and their homes in Napa. The family is featured on beaches throughout California and various other locations in Napa including Napa State Hospital. One member of the family was involved with shipbuilding and was part of the crew and maintenance of multiple vessels including the U.S.S. Milwaukee and the U.S.S. Saturn. The latter was deployed to Mexico as a means of protecting the United States while Mexico was in the midst of it's civil war. There are numerous photos throughout the album of the mission including Mexican generals, towns, and onboard activities of the crew. The Saturn was later sent to Alaska as communications support providing radio service to keep Alaska in touch with bases in the continental United States. These photos include the working of the radio station, along with exterior shots of the building, a photo of a band playing on board dubbed the Saturn's "orchestra," and a silly photo of men falling from a rail car which reads, "end of a joyride." The Saturn also made stops in Honolulu, seen here with shots of palm trees and beaches, as well as a trip through the Panama Canal. It seems that in between assignments crew members found it's way back to Napa and enjoyed the sights of California. There are numerous photos on the sea, including one of a passenger "feeding the fish" while being sick, and of a few storms that they endured, as well as incredible photos of ships and shipyards displaying the iron work and intricacies of the massive ships. An interesting collection of photos showing the many missions of the U.S.S. Saturn.

        Autograph letter signed.

Wiesbaden, 26. I. 1925. - 4to. 1 page. To the Kunsthaus Schaller in Stuttgart about the price of Robert Delaunay's painting "La ville No. 1": " In possession of your letter from January 24, I hurry to inform you that I consider 1500 [Reichsmark] as far too little. I would definitely not go into it if I, unfortunately, were not in financial difficulties at the moment, but you might be able to obtain a price of 1800 [Reichsmark]. If it is not possible at all, I must agree to 1500 [.] " (transl from the German original). - Jawlensky had acquired the painting at the first exhibition of the Blue Rider in Munich in 1912. In 1924/25 he tried to sell the work. Today it is considered lost. - Some marginalia in red pencil, probably from the hand of the gallery owner. - Left margin with punched holes (not touching text) and with receipt stamp.

The Boer War and First World War Photo Albums of Edith H. Hordley, British Nursing Sister and Principal Matron of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service

[South Africa; France; Egypt] 1925 - An archive of photo albums, post cards and ephemera, compiled by Edith H. Hordley a prominent British Nursing Sister who served in the Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service Reserve during the Second Boer War from 1900-1902 and later joined Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) in 1903. During the First World War she attained the rank of Principal Matron and was awarded the Royal Red Cross (First Class) in 1916.The collection contains well over 300 snap shot images from 1900-02 documenting Hordley's work and associated travels in South Africa, including images of Nursing Sisters, soldiers and officers, and South Africans (including refugees, laborers, and tribal members), at field hospitals, camps, and towns in and around Pretoria, Bloemfonsein, and elsewhere in the Transvaal; and in around Cape Town, Queenstown, and elsewhere in Cape Colony. Also included are about 75 real photo and color printed post cards compiled by Hordley during the First World War when she was stationed with the British Expeditionary Force in northern France, and an additional album of over 100 prints documenting her work after the War at a military hospital in Alexandria, Egypt.Edith Helen Hordley (c.1872-1953), a pupil at the Orme Girls' School from 1882 to 1890, sailed to South Africa on July 2, 1900 and received the Queen's Medal and King's Medal for her service there during the war. We know from evidence in the albums that she worked at an Imperial Yeomanry Branch Hospital in the Transvaal and at a military hospital in Wynberg, Cape Town. It is likely that while in South Africa she met Emma Maud McCarthy, who later became the most celebrated leader of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service when she served as Hordley's Matron-in-Chief with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders during the First World War. Both women joined the QAIMNS immediately after its founding in 1902 and both must have been lifelong friends. McCarthy frequently refers to Hordley throughout her War Diary from 1914-1919, and for about six months in 1917 Hordley served as Acting Matron-in-Chief when McCarthy was taken ill with appendicitis. An historically important and compelling personal archive of a leading member of the British military nursing service, dating from a time when the military actively discouraged women from documenting their wartime services, and also destroyed many official records.A detailed list follows.A. Three Photo AlbumsThe Second Boer War: Images of the Transvaal/South African Republic (Pretoria, Bloemfontein), Queenstown, and Cape Colony/Cape Town, 1900-1902.[1]. Oblong quarto. Cloth over boards (13.25" x 10.75"): Pretoria/Transvaal.Contains about 180 albumen and collodion prints of various sizes (6" x 8" and smaller), laid-down on 22 double-sided cardboard leaves (including about 20 prints laid-in). About a quarter are studio photographs captioned in white. Very good. Several images of Nursing Sisters at the Imperial Yeomanry Branch Hospital in Pretoria; various informal group portraits of British soldiers/officers and Nursing Sisters; views of camps, field hospitals, and hospital wards; close-up shots of soldiers/officers in beds or outside of the tents; Nursing Sisters (and other women) with soldiers/officers, at work and at leisure outdoors and indoors; images of South Africans and soldiers in the streets of Pretoria and at field camps (includes one print of several young South African boys working at a mine). Also included is a comic color ink drawing of a wounded soldier and two Nursing Sisters: "Overheard!!! . Two Sisters disagree on a point of diagnosis!" Among the studio photographs captioned in white are images of Gen. Roberts' staff saluting the British flag (Pretoria, 1900); Lord Kitchener and other military leaders; Lord Kitchener leaving for his afternoon ride, 1901; several images of field hospitals and camps; several views of Pretoria city.[2].

Album of Original Photographs from three Arctic expeditions commanded by Donald Baxter MacMillan

[Labrador, Baffin Island, Ellesmere Island, and Greenland 1925 - 83 silver gelatin photographs, plus 4 photo postcards, most approximately 3 x 5 inches. Manuscript captions on supports in white pencil throughout. Contemporary black leather, cord-tied photo album. A lively collection of photographs documenting an important series of 20th century Arctic voyages. A collection of eighty-seven images from three different Arctic voyages commanded or co-commanded by Donald Baxter MacMillan in the early 1920s. MacMillan made over thirty voyages to the Arctic during a nearly fifty year career that spanned the first half of the 20th century. After World War I, he designed and commissioned his own schooner, named the Bowdoin , specifically for Arctic exploration. The photos in this album document the first two expeditions made by the craft to Baffin Island in 1921-22, and to North Greenland, Ellesmere Island, and several other locations in 1923-24, as well as a third exploration, also to Greenland, made jointly with another ship called the Peary in 1925. The present images depict many views of the Bowdoin and the Peary , as well as sea planes transported into the Arctic by the Peary for testing, detail features of the passing landscape, seascape, and document local wildlife. Further photos show the activities of the men in camp and in the course of their duties, such as building, dog sledding, hiking, and ship loading. Finally, a number of pictures record the lives of the native Eskimo populations and show the ruins of building left by early Norse explorers. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Poems 1909–1925.

London: Faber & Gwyer Ltd,, 1925. Octavo. Original blue cloth, printed paper label to spine. With the dust jacket. Spine toned, some minor spotting within, an excellent copy with the jacket bright and only lightly rubbed at the extremities. First edition, first impression, in the scarce jacket. The collection selects from Prufrock (1917), Poems (1920), and also prints The Waste Land (1922, here including for the first time the dedication to Ezra Pound as "il miglior fabbro") and The Hollow Men, for which this is the first appearance. A contemporary reader, Robert Brown, dating his ownership inscription Christmas Eve 1926, has intensively annotated this copy, with a veritable essay, and a very learned one at that, covering the half-title and the facing page. Brown's critical annotations to The Waste Land in particular are of great intensity and interest, frequently elucidating not only the source but also the meaning of many literary references in this most referential of poems.

L'Annonciation Roman

Exceedingly rare 245 pp. novel about Parisian and Russian art, illustrated with four full-page plates, one from each of the important French and Russian artists Édouard Chimot, André Dignimont, Natalia Goncharova, and Mikhail Larionov, and an additional cul-de-lampe by Goncharova. 8vo. Orig. printed publisher's wrpps. Cover restored and reinforced. Paris (Henri Reynaud) 1925. One of a limited edition of 240 copies printed for subscribers and not generally for sale, this being one of 15 copies printed on Japan paper. George Isarlov was an Iranian writer and critic of French art, who most notably contributed an art column to the journal Combat. He authored many works of reference on artists including Picabia and Braque. The artists who are featured in this novel were all important in their own rights: Chimot was best known for the high quality art books he created in Paris in the 1920s. Dignimont worked in the Montmarte school and was noted for his book illustration and scenographic design. Goncharova and Larionov were lifelong romantic partners and both important figures in the Russian avant-garde movement, with Larionov being responsible for the founding of two important artistic groups, Jack of Diamonds and Donkey's Tail. Very scarce; as of November 2017, WorldCat locates only a single copy in North America.
