AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, addressed to the Austrian Composer and Conductor Hans Pless, making mention of his "Macbeth"

[December 28, 1925].. 1925].. Very good. - sc Two pages with over 100 words penned in German on both sides of an 8- 3/8 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide sheet of buff colored paper. The composer's name and address are faintly stamped in light blue at top left of the first page. In his letter addressed to the Austrian composer and conductor Hans Pless, Berg thanks him for his letter and mentions that he is anxious to get to know Pless's Macbeth. The following excerpts are translated from the German Fractur handwriting: "I, too, was sorry that you were not present. It would have meant a great deal to me." Berg is quite probably referring to the premiere of his opera Wozzeck which took place on December 14, 1925, two weeks before the date of this letter. Berg goes on to say, "I am very anxious to get to know your Macbeth. As soon as I come to Vienna and catch my breath after all my unavoidable obligations, we must get together for that wonderful purpose. Or perhaps we will see each other at the Volksoper when you conduct...." Signed "Alban Berg". Folded once horizontally for mailing, there are tiny tears to the edges of the fold. Very good. <p>A member of the Second Viennese School with Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, Alban Berg (1885-1935) was an Austrian composer of 20th century music whose compositions were influenced by the Romanticism of Gustav Mahler and his teacher Arnold Shcoenberg's twelve- tone technique. He is perhaps best remembered for his Violin Concerto and his operas "Wozzeck" and "Lulu", the latter about a prostitute who crosses paths with Jack the Ripper. Although he finished the first 2 acts, Berg died before completing Lulu.<p>The Austrian composer and conductor Hans Pless (1884-1966) collaborated with Daniel Ruyneman in setting up an organization to promote performances of new music in Europe and the US.<p>An English translation of the letter is included.

        Im Irrgarten

Bertele, Bilder, Buecher, Frankfurt A.M. 1925 - Quarto. (26)pp. First edition. Written and illustrated with thirteen fantastic, chromolithographed plates by Kleyer, who studied under the expressionist painter and printmaker Ludwig Meidner. Kleyer's text, which is a series of rhyming couplets printed on facing pages, concerns a family visit to a carnival, where they enter a funhouse maze. The majority of the illustrations are concerned with depicting the various distorted reflections the two little girls, their parents, and the family dog see while traversing the funhouse. These illustrations possess a distinctly surreal aesthetic reminiscent of the pioneering artwork of Winsor McCay for his Little Nemo in Slumberland. Bound in original cloth-backed illustrated boards, which show light soiling. Overall, a near fine copy of a scarce book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

My Life: Volume II & My Life and Loves; Frank Harris by Tobin & Gertz (3 DISTINCT VOLUMES) Grove Press Edition: Edited and with an Introduction by John F. Gallagher

Nice / New York: Privately Printed / Imprimerie Nicoise & Grove Press, Inc. , 1925 / 1963. First Edition & First Collected Edition, First Printing. Wrappers / Cloth. Fine / Fine/Fine / Fine. THREE volumes: 1) Presentation Copy SIGNED by the Author from Nice, France, to Robert Cushman with a quote: "Death closes all; yet something ere the end / Some work of noble worth may yet be done."; Vol. II ONLY, small 8vo, tan wrappers, xvii + 433 pages + [6] Index, with Errata slip; PLUS 2) a copy of the Complete edition (Five Volumes in One) of My Life & Loves by Frank Harris, tall and thick 8vo, green cloth with Kulhman' sketch of Harris, Mylar-protected dust jacket with caricaturish orange-tinted sketch of Frank Harris designed by Roy Kuhlman, xviii + 983 pages; PLUS 3) the Limited First Edition, 8vo, Frank Harris, by A. I. Tobin and E. Gertz, Fine in dj, (1931), xii + 393 pages. We here offer THREE Fine examples of one of the great autobiographies with remarkable erotic content and penetrating insights. One copy offers a Great Rarity: A highly personalized Presentation by Harris of his Second Volume. We couple that rarity with a handsome copy of Harris's complete autobiography as published in a Fine edition by Grove. The wrappered Presentation Copy Signed and with a Quotation is square and its binding is holding remarkably well, especially given the paper's relative fragility. There is a barely visible band of purplish color (perhaps caused by offset from another volume) that can be detected on the cover, though it scarcely detracts from the Rarity of having ANY Part of said autobiography in the original wrappers. They simply disappeared or were mangled. Given the age and quality of the wrappered First Edition, there is slight uniform age-toning to the pages, which is to be expected. Internally, the wrappered First Edition (Vol. II) is clear, unmarked, and relatively bright.Overall in Exceptional condition! The thick and tall octavo by Grove Press contains all five of Harris's autobiographical volumes in one. It is clean, tight, bright with a few tiny nicks to the otherwise excellent dust jacket. We also include the revealing biography by A. I. Tobin and E.Gertz, entitled--what else?--Frank Harris, an edition limited to 1,000 copies. Ours is a Fine Copy in an equally Fine dj. It reveals more of the somewhat obscured sexual life of the famous autobiographer and includes unpublished correspondence from Oscar Wilde, Lord Alfred Douglas, and other notables.

Poor Cecco. By Margery Williams Bianco. Author of "The Velveteen Rabbit." Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. New York: George H. Doran Company, [1925].First edition, deluxe large paper issue. One of 105 numbered copies signed by Margery Williams Bianco. Quarto. 175 pp. Seven full-page illustrations in color, mounted on white paper, and twenty-four drawings in black and white. Original parchment-backed light blue paper boards, navy blue lettering label on spine. Pictorial endpapers in pale blue on white. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Upper hinge invisibly restored, very slight (closed) split to top one inch of parchment spine on lower joint not affecting joint integrity, short marginal tear to last blank. Otherwise, a fine copy. The text, with the same illustrations by Rackham, also appeared in Good Housekeeping beginning in May 1925. No limited English edition was issued, and this title/edition is the rarest of Rackham illustrated books, and extremely scarce."The Velveteen Rabbit or How Toys Become Real was Margery Williams Bianco's first American work, and it remains her most famous. It became an instant classic and has remained so through numerous adaptations in children's theater as well as on radio, television and in the movies. After becoming a renowned author, Bianco wrote numerous other children's books, with her son becoming the namesake of one of them, 1925's Poor Cecco: The Wonderful Story of a Wonderful Wooden Dog Who Was the Jolliest Toy in the House Until He Went Out to Explore the World&#151;a distinguished book that belies its somewhat priggish subtitle and is arguably better entitled than The Velveteen Rabbit to status as a classic. This lively adventure story, virtually a novel for children, is a brilliant exception to the sentimentality of Bianco's more famous book. Each of the many characters who populate the nursery toy cupboard is a distinct and amusing personality. Their interactions with each other and with the human, animal, and toy members of the world beyond it, whom they encounter on their quest for adventure/search for a lost friend, are delineated with understated humor. The relationship between the wooden dog Cecco, a natural leader, and Jensina, a highly independent and spirited wooden doll, is both subtle and funny. Superb illustrations by Arthur Rackham are a perfect complement to the narrative. While the publisher probably found it more practical to promote the shorter Velveteen Rabbit, Cecco's celebrated illustrator may have assured its survival in the catalogues of rare book dealers despite its undeserved literary obscurity. A return to more sober themes marks Bianco's other popular works, such as the same year's The Little Wooden Doll, illustrated by her daughter Pamela, in which the title character is badly mistreated by some children, but shown love and compassion by another child, which made her whole again."         Trevor Lloyd's sketchbooks of New Zealand.

New Zealand, ca. 1925. In two volumes. Folio (35 x 25 cm, and 36 x 33 cm). The first of white paper, with his name handwritten on the second leaf, and (68 groups of) illustrations, mostly on leaf rectos only, a few using both sides of a leaf. The second, largest, of brown paper, with his name written on the front cover. Inserted: one sheet of trace paper with pencil drawing, and 24 leaves with colour pencil sketches of New Zealand landscapes, and people.= Trevor Lloyd (1863-1937) was a New Zealand artist, illustrator and cartoonist. "...Lloyd was born in Silverdale, Auckland ... [his] work is evocative of the New Zealand bush and his work often contained Maori motifs. Lloyd exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts in 1883, 1896, 1898, 1899 and 1907 and in 1927 at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Some examples of his work are available online. Lloyd was employed as an illustrator for New Zealand Illustrated Magazine from November 1901 until its last edition in 1905 (in which he was acknowledged). He also worked as an illustrator for Auckland Weekly News and as a cartoonist for The New Zealand Herald, retiring in 1936 after 34 years" (Wikipedia). The first sketchbook mainly shows a) scenes and people, observed and drawn by Lloyd during a boat trip, perhaps on a ferry; and b) spectacular solitary trees and ferns, in rectangular frames. The latter seems to be one of his favourite subjects: several New Zealand museums and art galleries possess tree etchings in his hand, and at least one of the drawings in this manuscript can be identified as the basis of one of his etchings. The former are not without humour: a harbour scene has, in the margin, the sketch of a surprised looking young girl, captioned "He's drawing in ink". Trevor Lloyd was, after all, also one the country's leading cartoonists. Of his India ink sketches those of landscapes are quite detailed; those of people more sketched -some in pencil. Among the pencilled illustrations is one of a cat sleeping in a man's arm, captioned "the prisoner", which left us to wonder who the prisoner was: the cat, or the man? The second sketchbook contains fine, balanced, crayon illustrations of New Zealand landscapes, and people, many captioned with the name of the location (e.g. Whale Island, in the Bay of Plenty, or Umu-Pura Pura, or a short description of the situation (e.g. "One of our backbones", "A warm day"). On some drawings a white tent is visible, suggesting that Lloyd went on a trip through part of New Zealand's Northern Island. Both sketch books show signs of travel and working in the open air. Thus edges frayed, a few smudges and small holes in some leaves, but generally in good condition. In all, a rich cross-section of Lloyd as an observer and artist. See also: John F. Perry. 'Lloyd, Trevor', from the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography.

PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF 116 PROFESSIONAL IMAGES, MOSTLY FROM MIE-KEN, CIRCA 1895-1925, DURING THE MEIJI AND TAISHO PERIODS

1925. Original photograph album. Very Good. Oblong, string-tied album of black cardstock leaves, 11" x 13", photographs mounted on 35pp, blanks at the rear. Bound in black, flexible boards with an embossed sailing ship and gilt lettering (Photo-Album) on the cover. Pasted in are 116 albumen and silver gelatin prints, ranging from small candids to 8 ½" x 10 ½" group portraits, a few fading, overall sharp and clean. Laid into the album are a Japanese news article, a small head-shot of an older gentleman, and a watercolor portrait (10" x 8 ¼") of a man's face. Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925, were taken in Mie-Ken (or "Mie prefecture"), part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. The group and individual portraits reflect new social and economic developments and cultural norms that emerged during this period. Subjects are shown in either traditional Japanese garments or in Western dress. Group shots often depict people wearing both styles within the same picture. There are many group shots of schoolchildren of both sexes, young people in uniforms posed before buildings with Japanese signs on them, as well as many formal group shots of families, some "nuclear"-husband, wife, children- others extended by relatives. Individual shots of young children show them almost invariably in western dress, one posed with his tricycle, young boys in uniform, a young girl in kimono showing a dance move while holding a fan, infants in traditional robes, and young men in business suits. Several birdseye views feature very large groups of rural people in traditional dress, posed outdoors. Among the most striking photographs are: one (8 ½" x 10 ½") showing 11 doctors/ medical students posed around two corpses (one smiling happily) being dissected on two tables; four women and one man posed around a table doing handwork (weaving, tatting?); men in western dress, "strap-holding" inside a streetcar; and 5 actors (2 male, 3 female) on stage in costume. ~~ The Meiji period (1868-1912) saw the restoration of the Emperor (this time with a centralized bureaucracy behind him) after years of shogun rule. Japan was under heavy influence from Western political, economic, and educational models, and the country became more capitalist, industrial, and progressively democratic, offering free education to youngsters of both genders. Transportation and communications systems were modernized, the feudal lords and samurai lost their power, and a powerful national army and navy were created. By the early 1870s, the government declared all classes of people to be equal. The Taishu period (1912-26) saw the continued influence of Western culture, and values such as efficiency and individualism continued to replace more traditional ones. Japanese participation on the world stage continued to grow as the nation co-founded the League of Nations and emerged on the winning side in WWI. By 1925, there was universal male suffrage in Japan. Corruption in government increased, however, and the West began to form negative views of this newly-powerful, non-white nation, exacerbated by Japan's poor treatment of China.
