Trevor Lloyd's sketchbooks of New Zealand.

New Zealand, ca. 1925. In two volumes. Folio (35 x 25 cm, and 36 x 33 cm). The first of white paper, with his name handwritten on the second leaf, and (68 groups of) illustrations, mostly on leaf rectos only, a few using both sides of a leaf. The second, largest, of brown paper, with his name written on the front cover. Inserted: one sheet of trace paper with pencil drawing, and 24 leaves with colour pencil sketches of New Zealand landscapes, and people.= Trevor Lloyd (1863-1937) was a New Zealand artist, illustrator and cartoonist. "...Lloyd was born in Silverdale, Auckland ... [his] work is evocative of the New Zealand bush and his work often contained Maori motifs. Lloyd exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts in 1883, 1896, 1898, 1899 and 1907 and in 1927 at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Some examples of his work are available online. Lloyd was employed as an illustrator for New Zealand Illustrated Magazine from November 1901 until its last edition in 1905 (in which he was acknowledged). He also worked as an illustrator for Auckland Weekly News and as a cartoonist for The New Zealand Herald, retiring in 1936 after 34 years" (Wikipedia). The first sketchbook mainly shows a) scenes and people, observed and drawn by Lloyd during a boat trip, perhaps on a ferry; and b) spectacular solitary trees and ferns, in rectangular frames. The latter seems to be one of his favourite subjects: several New Zealand museums and art galleries possess tree etchings in his hand, and at least one of the drawings in this manuscript can be identified as the basis of one of his etchings. The former are not without humour: a harbour scene has, in the margin, the sketch of a surprised looking young girl, captioned "He's drawing in ink". Trevor Lloyd was, after all, also one the country's leading cartoonists. Of his India ink sketches those of landscapes are quite detailed; those of people more sketched -some in pencil. Among the pencilled illustrations is one of a cat sleeping in a man's arm, captioned "the prisoner", which left us to wonder who the prisoner was: the cat, or the man? The second sketchbook contains fine, balanced, crayon illustrations of New Zealand landscapes, and people, many captioned with the name of the location (e.g. Whale Island, in the Bay of Plenty, or Umu-Pura Pura, or a short description of the situation (e.g. "One of our backbones", "A warm day"). On some drawings a white tent is visible, suggesting that Lloyd went on a trip through part of New Zealand's Northern Island. Both sketch books show signs of travel and working in the open air. Thus edges frayed, a few smudges and small holes in some leaves, but generally in good condition. In all, a rich cross-section of Lloyd as an observer and artist. See also: John F. Perry. 'Lloyd, Trevor', from the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography.

1925. Original photograph album. Very Good. Oblong, string-tied album of black cardstock leaves, 11" x 13", photographs mounted on 35pp, blanks at the rear. Bound in black, flexible boards with an embossed sailing ship and gilt lettering (Photo-Album) on the cover. Pasted in are 116 albumen and silver gelatin prints, ranging from small candids to 8 ½" x 10 ½" group portraits, a few fading, overall sharp and clean. Laid into the album are a Japanese news article, a small head-shot of an older gentleman, and a watercolor portrait (10" x 8 ¼") of a man's face. Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925, were taken in Mie-Ken (or "Mie prefecture"), part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. The group and individual portraits reflect new social and economic developments and cultural norms that emerged during this period. Subjects are shown in either traditional Japanese garments or in Western dress. Group shots often depict people wearing both styles within the same picture. There are many group shots of schoolchildren of both sexes, young people in uniforms posed before buildings with Japanese signs on them, as well as many formal group shots of families, some "nuclear"-husband, wife, children- others extended by relatives. Individual shots of young children show them almost invariably in western dress, one posed with his tricycle, young boys in uniform, a young girl in kimono showing a dance move while holding a fan, infants in traditional robes, and young men in business suits. Several birdseye views feature very large groups of rural people in traditional dress, posed outdoors. Among the most striking photographs are: one (8 ½" x 10 ½") showing 11 doctors/ medical students posed around two corpses (one smiling happily) being dissected on two tables; four women and one man posed around a table doing handwork (weaving, tatting?); men in western dress, "strap-holding" inside a streetcar; and 5 actors (2 male, 3 female) on stage in costume. ~~ The Meiji period (1868-1912) saw the restoration of the Emperor (this time with a centralized bureaucracy behind him) after years of shogun rule. Japan was under heavy influence from Western political, economic, and educational models, and the country became more capitalist, industrial, and progressively democratic, offering free education to youngsters of both genders. Transportation and communications systems were modernized, the feudal lords and samurai lost their power, and a powerful national army and navy were created. By the early 1870s, the government declared all classes of people to be equal. The Taishu period (1912-26) saw the continued influence of Western culture, and values such as efficiency and individualism continued to replace more traditional ones. Japanese participation on the world stage continued to grow as the nation co-founded the League of Nations and emerged on the winning side in WWI. By 1925, there was universal male suffrage in Japan. Corruption in government increased, however, and the West began to form negative views of this newly-powerful, non-white nation, exacerbated by Japan's poor treatment of China.

        JARDINS ENCHANTÉS Un Romancero.

Paris: Louis Conard 1925. First edition; penned presentation inscription from the author to "Madame de Berèze" dated 1930 on half-title. Ferdinand Bac, a German native who migrated to Paris in the nineteenth century, was a successful painter, author and book illustrator who later settled at Menton on the French Riviera. He designed several gardens for the unique semi-tropical mountains of that region, most notably Les Colombières. His imaginative and romantic Mediterranean gardens, both real and imaginary, influenced artists such as the architect and garden designer, Louis Barragan. Barragan was inspired, in particular, by the "enchanted" Hispano-Moorish gardens described in JARDINS ENCHANTÉS, a few of which had actually been built, while most were pure fantasy. These are depicted in a series of evocative paintings reproduced here in color. The text is a story, or "romancero," written to accompany the illustrations. 4to (27.5 x 22 cm); viii + 72 pp. text with printed decorative borders + 36 color plates. Recently bound in marbled paper over boards with gilt titled and dated leather spine; original paper wraps bound in, some soiling to original wraps, heavier on rear cover; some scattered foxing internally, heavier on preliminaries. .

Brandt/In herzlicher Gesinnung"" (translated as To his dear friend … with warm sentiments). The book is protected in a custom clamshell case, with the front wrap design repeating on the front of the clamshell, and leather quarter cloth with raised bands on the spine, with a touch of slight rubbing to the front. The book is neatly nestled in the tray case and well protected.A rare signed and dedicated book by Sigmund Freud with fantastic associations. Sigmund Freud signed the book to Oskar Pfister, who in turn gifted the book 30 years later with a warm inscription to Professor R. Brant. Pfister and Freud both studied psychoanalysis, although Freud did so in a professional capacity, Pfister was more of a ""lay"" psychoanalyst. As an early associate of Freud, Pfister studied theology, philosophy and psychoanalysis with extensive interest in Freud's concepts of the Oedipus Complex, castration anxiety and Transference ( Transference is a phenomenon characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings from one person to another. One definition of transference is ""the inappropriate repetition in the present of a relationship that was important in a person's childhood) . Pfister and Freud shared numerous letters on these subjects which spanned over 30 years until Freud's death in 1939. In turn, Professor Brandt was a dear friend of Pfister's, who also actively researched, analyzed and questioned Freud's theories during the mid 1950's while writing his thesis as a Doctor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa, Canada. Brandt was highly analytical having both studied and extensively critiqued Freud for many years noting that ""Perhaps in no other field except religion has there been so much disagreement among such competent thinkers as there is in psychoanalysis"". And therein lies the common thread and perpetual philosophical debate between the three individuals which spanned over many decades.A fine condition book, with an extremely scarce signature by Sigmund Freud, with several wonderful and unique associations."

Ms. Brief mit eigenh. U. ("Retschke"). Paris, [um 1925].

1925. 1 S. Gr.-4to. Die Verso-Seite mit gedr. Briefkopf "Die Weltbühne [...] Paris".

Sergeant became one of the original contributors to THE NEW REPUBLIC and was sent by the magazine to Paris in 1917 to cover the war.
