        Ralph 124C 41+: A Romance of the Year 2660 ---by Hugo Gernsback -a Signed Copy ( 124C41+ )

Boston, Massachussetts: Boston, MA: The Stratford Company, 1925, 1st Edition, First Printing , 1925. -----------hardcover, a solid Very Good to Very Good+ example with a wee bit of rubbing and age darkening to the edges of the boards and spine tips, the binding is completely square and tight, a bit of rubbing to the blue cloth ---this copy has been signed "Sincerely yours Hugo gernsback", quite scarce in the 1st edition but really quite rare to be found signed --- in a Fine FACSIMILE dust jacket with that super Paul cover art of a sort of television or video phone, as well all 11 plates by Paul are present, this copy is Priority A as per Currey with the publishers name on the spine measuring 1 1/2 cm vs priority B which measures 2 cm, no priority established, blue cloth with just a bit of wear, Gernsback's book is considered the true beginning of 20th century science fiction, Gernsback believed in the perpetual advancememt of mankind towards greater and greater inventions and conveniences, ---as mentioned in Bleiler ----"The literary treatment is on a very low level, but RALPH 124C 41+ is renowned for its many highly imaginative technological projections. These include clear descriptions of radar, book & newspaper microfilms & microfiches, television, plant hormones, wireless transmission of power." ---.many things which today we take for granted, .--- true expression of his personal philosophy of man's triumph over all around him the book is largely unreadable today but remains a cornerstone of any serious science fiction collection, Gernsback originally serialized RALPH in his MODERN ELECTRICS magazine, shortly after the appearance of RALPH in book form Gernsback began AMAZING STORIES ---arguably one of the most successful pulp magazines ever, --- today we remember Gernsback with the annual HUGO AWARDS which are named after him, ---this copy has an ink name on the front blank endpaper, name is P M Millman who is likely the Canadian astronomer Peter Mackenzie Millman, I suspect that this copy was his during his younger days before he went on to be a world renowned astonomer, not 100% certain but it is likely that a future astronomer had a keen interest in early science fiction, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (see description)/Fine ( FACSIMILE ). Illus. by Frank R Paul.

Set of eight original prints in color, drawn on laid paper. The boards are introduced by a text signed LRF Sketches L, LII, LIII, LV, are signed David, respectively on the lower right and left boards.Original prints made for the illustration of The Gazette fashionable, one of the finest and most influential twentieth century fashion magazines, celebrating the talent of creators and artists French burgeoning art deco.Famous fashion magazine founded in 1912 by Lucien Vogel, The Gazette fashionable appeared until 1925 with an interruption during the War of 1915 to 1920, due to mobilization of its editor. She is 69 Deliveries from just 2000 copies and is illustrated including 573 color plates and 148 sketches depicting models of fashion designers. Upon publication, these luxury publications "are for bibliophiles and worldly aesthetes" (Françoise Tétart-Vittu "good Gazette of tone" in the fashion dictionary, 2016). Printed on fine laid paper, they use a typeface created specifically for the magazine by Georges Peignot, the Cochin character, taken in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints are made with the technique of metal stencil, enhanced color and some outlined in gold or palladium. The adventure began in 1912 when Lucien Vogel, man of the world and fashion - it has already participated in Femina magazine - decided to found with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff (John's sister, the father of Babar) Gazette good tone in which the subtitle is then "Art, fashions and frivolities." Georges Charensol quotes the editor: "In 1910, he observed, there was no truly artistic fashion magazine and representative of the spirit of his time. So I thought of making a glossy magazine with truly modern artists [...] I was certain of success because for any fashion country can compete with France. "(" A great art editor. Lucien Vogel "in literary News, No. 133, May 1925). The success of the magazine is immediate, not only in France but also the US and South America.Originally, Vogel therefore brings together a group of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud, followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt; and finally his friends from the School of Fine Arts as are George Barbier, Bernard Boutet de Monvel or Charles Martin. Other talents come quickly reach the equipped Guy Arnoux, Léon Bakst, Benito, Boutet de Monvel, Umberto Brunelleschi, Chas Laborde, Jean-Gabriel Domergue, Raoul Dufy, Edward Halouze Alexander Iacovleff, Jean Emile Laboureur Charles Loupot, Charles Martin, Maggie Salcedo. These artists, mostly unknown when Lucien Vogel appealed to them, will eventually become iconic figures and artistic sought. These are the same illustrators who make the drawings advertisements Gazette. The boards highlight the dresses and sublime seven artists of the time: Lanvin, Doeuillet, Paquin, Poiret, Worth, Vionnet and Doucet. The designers provide for each number of exclusive models. Nevertheless, some of Illustrations contained no real model, but only the idea that the illustrator is done in the fashion of the day.Gazette fashionable is a milestone in the history of fashion. Combining the aesthetic requirement and plastic unit, it brings together for the first time the great talents of the world of arts, literature and fashion and imposed by this alchemy, a new image of women, slender, independent and bold, also driven by the new generation of designers Coco Chanel, Jean Patou, Rochas Marcel ...Recovery in 1920 by Condé Montrose Nast, Gazette fashionable modeled for the new composition and the aesthetic choices of the "little dying newspaper" that Nast had bought a few years ago: the Vogue magazine.         Fünf Episoden. Mit |zehn Originallithographien| von |Josèphe Verheyen|.

Wien, Eros-Presse, 1925. Hayn-Got. IX, 102. Childs 211 ("With ten licentious cubistic illus. in color. The five episodes are: Bettina, Nannette and Marton, Juliette, Lucretia and Angelica, and the Greek slave girl"). --------------------------[Verheyen]. Casanova. Bel exemplaire. Hayn-Got. IX, 102.---------------------|English description available on request|. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        KNAVE OF HEARTS

PARRISH, MAXFIELD. (PARRISH,MAXFIELD)illus. KNAVE OF HEARTS by Louise Saunders. NY: Scribner 1925 (1925) folio, black cloth, pictorial paste-on, some rubbing to cover plate and cloth, VG+ in fine custom facsimile box. First edition of Parrish's masterwork. Illustrated with glorious pictorial endpapers plus really magnificent full page color illustrations (printed on rectos only) and numerous rich color illustrations in-text, all printed on thick, heavy coated paper. LAID IN IS A HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM PARRISH TO HIS EDITOR, J.H. CHAPIN DISCUSSING HIS PROGRESS ON THE KNAVE. Written on both sides of a 3 1/2 x 5" card, dated January 26, 1922, Parrish writes to Chapin about his progress with the Knave, specifically his work on the double-page pictorial endpapers. "I have your note of the 23rd. The cover and one of the illustrations, very similar to the cover, are finished, and I am at work upon the cover lining. This one, as you know is to be a very grand affair and will take as much time almost as a big mural decoration, but its going to be very fine & elegant. By May I ought to have in your hands enough to make a respectable dummy. I disike in any way to exaggerate, but we seem to be undergoing a cold snap. 32 degrees below zero at this moment: 28 yesterday and 36 the day before. Our road has vanished in hard snow drifts and its a life of snowshoes now, as far as mail and provisions are concerned. Photographs come from my youngsters in Florida, out rowing in their shirt sleeves and lying around on the sand in bathing suits. Methinks we live in a big country. Sincerely: Maxfield Parrish". Its always a bonus when the content of a letter adds meaning to the development of a book.

Sonderdruck Sigmund Freud [offprint from L. R. Grotes' "Die Medizin Der Gegenwart in Selbstdarstellungen")

Leipzig: Felix Meiner, 1925 First edition off-print of Sigmund Freud's autobiography, inscribed on the top cover, "Seimen lieben / O. Pfister / Freud / 12.2.25." The book is further inscribed by Pfister on the blank recto of the frontispiece, " Seimen lieben Freunde / Prof. R. Brandt / In herzlicher Gesinnung / Zurich 24.4.55." Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. Oskar Pfister (1873-1956) was a Swiss Lutheran minister and lay psychoanalyst born in Zurich, Switzerland. He is perhaps best known for applying psychoanalysis to the science of education, as well as a belief system combining psychoanalytic psychology and theology. In Zurich, he was in close intellectual proximity to Eugen Bleuler and Carl Jung. The friendship between Freud and Pfister is well documented, lasting over 30 years and only ending upon Freud's death. Less is known about Professor Brandt, though he is believed to have completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa, Canada and to have written several articles pertaining to Sigmund Freud as well as the psychoanalytic concept of transference. (We are interested to learn more of Dr. Brandt should anyone have additional information). This offprint is bound in teal paper wrap covers. There are a few penciled marks in the margins, as well as some notations believed to be in German in the blank spaces of the last page. There are some handling creases scattered throughout. Overall, this offprint remains tight, and it is otherwise clean and intact. The offprint is housed in a custom felt-lined clamshell case with leather spine and spine labels, raised spine bands, and gilt lettering. The offprint cover is nicely copied onto a green cloth affixed to the top of the case. This cloth piece shows light rubbing, not affecting any letter. Case is otherwise Fine. . Association copy, inscribed by the Author. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket.

Lucien Vogel "in letteraria News, N. 133, maggio 1925). With numerous maps and figures in the text. Six volumes in brown half leather, five raised bands and gilt spine-titles, marbled boards and patterned endpapers. Wrappers are not preserved. Spines are a bit dry, worn and a little stained, the corners are worn. There are a few scattered small specks in the second volume, and most leaves in the fifth volume have a slight nick in outer margin. A well-preserved set, which comes with an extra set of 65 plates of art and traditional patterns. The copy is purchased from the Kaudern family and has belonged to Kaudern's wife Teres, but there are no traces of her ownership. Kaudern (1881-1942), Swedish ethnographer and naturalist, spent the years 1917-1921 in Celebes/Sulawesi, where he made ethnographical and zoological-geographical observations in the mainly unknown inland parts of the island. He brought home a collection consisting of more than 3000 ethnographical objects and donated parts of it to the Gothenburg Museum of Ethnography, and he succeeded his former teacher Erland Nordenskiöld as director of the same institution in 1934. The first five parts, dealing with structures and settlements, migrations of the Toraja in Central Celebes, musical instruments, games and dances, and megalithic finds, were published by Kaudern himself, while the last volume treating art was posthumously edited and published by his wife together with his former colleague Henry Wassén.

A Map of New York which is Published by the Washington Square Bookshop. Here is a map to give you pleasure, a town reduced to your mantel's measure, city of gaiety, city of gold, your Bagdad on Hudson, three hundred years old.

New York.: Washington Square Bookshop.. 1925.. Color pictographic / pictorial map, 30 1/2 x 38 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Folds (as issued) with infill at fold intersections, pinholes, a few tears (minimized by linen backing). Very good condition. A vibrant bird's eye view of New York City humorously designed by Joseph B. Platt, with Battery Park in the lower right corner and Grant's Tomb and the Polo Grounds in the upper left. The map is bordered by decorative text that reads "Here is a map to give you pleasure, a town reduced to your mantel's measure, city of gayety, city of gold, your Bagdad on Hudson, three hundred years old". This scarce map published to celebrate the tricentenary of the purchase of Manhattan by the Dutch ("Little Miss New York Born 1626" reads a banner flying from the small plane to the right of the central compass rose) is quite extraordinarily modernist in character. It employs some of the graphic features of the new style of "wonder map" developed by MacDonald Gill in his London Underground map posters of the early teens and twenties, notably the "speech balloons" with comic quips explicating the city history and contemporary character and also in its decorative border with text of civic pride. However in the almost abstract coloration of its startling color palette, it stands alone. Examples of the quips: "Is this map to be formal or informal?"; a couple looking at the Woolworth Building exclaim "Oh Boy! That's some stack of dimes." The map was printed by the Ritchey Litho Corp. WorldCat lists a single library holding for this map, at Brown University; another copy is located at the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center (Boston Public Library). .

Lucien Vogel » in Les Nouvelles littéraires, n°133, mai 1925). D'autres talents viennent rapidement rejoindre l'équipée : Guy Arnoux, Léon Bakst, Benito, Boutet de Monvel, Umberto Brunelleschi, Chas Laborde, Jean-Gabriel Domergue, Raoul Dufy, Édouard Halouze, Alexandre Iacovleff, Jean Émile Laboureur, Charles Loupot, Charles Martin, Maggie Salcedo.

        ORIGINAL ART: PETER RABBIT

      - POTTER,BEATRIX. ORIGINAL ART: PETER RABBIT. Offered here is an exquisite ink and watercolor drawing of Peter Rabbit, presented by Potter to Anne Carroll Moore, the influential and opinionated head of children's library services for the New York Public Library and children's book author. Done circa 1925, the image shows Peter standing in front of a green leafy background. He is wearing a blue jacket and red shoes, holding a bouquet of pink flowers in one hand and an envelope in the other addressed "To Ann Caraway". The actual image measures 4" wide x 4 3/4" high on paper measuring 7" wide x 9 1/2" high. The paper is slightly faded on edges from where it had been matted, the verso has some narrow old tape marks and some tiny spots, overall Fine condition with the colors fresh and rich. It is signed and inscribed by Potter in 4 lines beneath the picture: Congratulations to / Anne Carroll Moore / from little Peter Rabbit and / Beatrix Potter". Moore first discovered Potter's work during her time as Children's Librarian at the Pratt Institute Free Library in Brooklyn, becoming one of Potter's early American admirers. After the first World War Moore traveled to Europe to help replenish devastated children's libraries and while there she contacted Potter (as well as Leslie Brooke and Walter de la Mare). This began a friendship with Potter that lasted more than 20 years. About this first meeting Moore remembered "her bright blue eyes sparkled with merriment and her smile was that of a child who shares a secret, as indeed she did. She spoke with the tang of the north country. No welcome could have been more cordial than hers to Hill Top Farm." [from "An Appreciation" the introduction to The "Art of Beatrix Potter" edited by Linder and Herring, 1955]. Although they were to meet only once more in person, the two kept up a regular exchange of letters, books and photos in which Potter's admiration of Moore was evident. Although the painting is not dated, it is undoubtedly circa 1925 sent to Moore after the publication of her first children's book, "Nicholas: A Manhattan Christmas Story" about a wooden doll and its owner Ann Caraway (the name on the envelope that Peter is holdi [Attributes: Hard Cover]
