Cervantes - Neun Blatt unveröffentlichte Original-Kaltnadelradierungen zu Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra: "Don Quijote".

Wohl Königsberg 1925 - um 1925. Lose Blätter. (Vier Blätter im weißen Rand etwas fleckig, wenige kleine Randeinrisse, insgesamt recht gut und klare Abdrucke. Selten.). "Klaus Carl Friedrich Richter (geb. 25. Januar 1887 in Berlin; gest. 3.

Illustrated by Tsugouharu Foujita.

Le Livre de Demain/Artheme Fayard & Cie, Paris 1925 - A Very Good copy in original orange wrappers printed in black and red, price label afixed to front cover in a later board slipcase. 175 pp. 28 illustrations after woodcuts by Foujita. Wrappers are rubbed and partially separated though intact with loss to one corner. Many titles were published in this series of "Le Livre de Demain" but this volume is partically collectible because of the witty woodcuts by the young expatriate Japanese artist primarily known for his cat paintings and illustrations. There is not a cat to be found in any of these woodcuts, which makes this production even more special. Catalog Rum

Die Erreichbarkeit der Himmelskörper. Untersuchung über das Raumfahrtproblem.

Munich & Berlin: Verlag von R. Oldenbourg, 1925. 1st Edition. Soft cover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to (254 x 179 mm). iv, [2], 88 pp. including 28 illustrations in text. Original publisher's dark-blue pictorial wrappers (slight chipping to edges and lower spine, short closed tears, creases, light browning to margins, pencil marking to upper blank margin of front wrapper). Text untrimmed and partially unopened, light age-toning. ----Interlibrum, Cat. 270; Ciancone 98; Hübner 696. - FIRST EDITION, first issue of an important early work on the feasibility of space flight with calculations of required rocket propulsion and trajectories. "Hohmann was the first to work out the fuel requirements for a number of interplanetary trips restricting himself to a mathematical investigation of the quantities of a given or assumed fuel required for an assumed operation" (Interlibrum). The work is rare. Only 1500 copies were printed and this is one of the few copies with the original pictorial blue wrappers. "One of the most important publications, following close on the heels of Oberth's book, was a volume of similar external appearance, written in a similar manner. As a matter of fact, it looked so forbidding to prospective buyers who leafed through it in the book-stores that the first edition ... was never completely sold and remained after the second world war with a new wrapper bearing the printed title only on the front cover. It soon became a much searched rarity" (Interlibrum). 1st Printing. Very Good.

[FIRST MANDELSTAM'S 'THE NOISE OF TIME'] Shum vremeni [i.e. The Noise of Time]

Leningrad: Vremia, 1925. 104 pp. 19,5x14 cm. Original illustrated wrappers. Near fine. Small tears at the top and bottom of the spine, damp stains on a few pages, Soviet bookshop's stamp on the back cover. First edition. One of 3000 copies. Rare. This is the first prose collection and an autobiographical work by Osip Mandelstam (1891-1938) from which most of the knowledge of his early years come from. It was written during the pause he took from writing poetry at the Crimean spa of Gaspra. The Noise of Time was written in 1923 but has not taken in publishing until 1925. It is a series of autobiographical sketches of the late 19th - early 20th century but strictly speaking it's not an autobiography: «My desire is not to speak about myself but to track down the age, the noise and the germination of time». At that time Mandelstam was trying to earn living with his literary work. All of his essays were commissioned. Isay Lezhnev, the editor of 'Rossiya' (i.e. Russia) commissioned The Noise of Time but after it was finished he was bitterly disappointed and rejected it - he was awaiting for a story similar to his or Mark Chagall's childhood stories but this story of St. Petersburg's jewish boy seemed dull for him. After that Mandelstam showed the work to Efros and Tikhonov (editor of 'Vsemirnaia literatura') but they also said they expected more from him. So he was left without fee when he badly needed it. Luckily his wife Nadezhda Mandelstam preserved the manuscript so it went from magazine to magazine. «Nobody would print a plotless thing without a class approach or social significance». Everybody including Nikolay Bukharin and Vladimir Narbut were saying the same: «I can't publish it - give me translations». Nadezhda Mandelstam later suggested that «there had probably been some decision at the top… wherever it is that ideology comes from - that divided writers into 'ours' and 'theirs'. Mandelstam and Akhmatova turned up in the extreme category of 'theirs'». (After Mandelstam's last book was published in 1928 his poetry was ostracized and almost banned). Only Georgy Blok, Alexander Blok's cousin, who held private press breathing its last became interested and published it. Even though critics found his perception of life 'potted' they appreciated his depiction and feature of 1880s-90s life and reaction period. Cover design by E. Kiliusheva who was an illustrator of children's books of publishing house 'Raduga' in the 1920s.

Exceptional Signed Portrait Photograph by Edward STEICHEN (Charles, 1889-1977, Comedian)

1925 - (1879-1973), signed and inscribed to R.A.J. Wolling "from Charlie Chaplin" on two lines across the image, mostly in the light background, showing him head and shoulders, the shoulders in near profile to the viewer's right, his head turned slightly forward, three quarter face to the viewer, a warm smile just forming in his eyes, cheeks and lips, a few touches of grey in his hair, he wears a dark jacket with thin stripes at the collar, a lighter tie, his left arm descending diagonally at the back of the image, the image 9" x 7" in margins 10" x 8" on contemporary light card mount 14" x 10¾" with photographer's light protective 'flimsy', no place, no date, circa flimsy loose with a few small edge defects, photo and mount in fine condition This portrait dates from Steichen's 'Condé Nast' period, when he made artistic studies for Vogue and Vanity Fair. It bears an astonishing resemblance to the image, part of the Steichen Bequest, in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. There is no perceptible difference in the pose, the angle of the head, or the contours of the hair, but the Minneapolis image has no smile and indeed by contrast appears serious, almost severe, although clearly taken at the same sitting. We do not think the smile has been achieved by retouching, and its warmth appears entirely natural, indeed most attractive. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Loose in frame, some light wear at edges, a few light surface marks, some small areas of surface loss (approximately 1/2" x 1/2" and 1/3" x 1/3") at diagonally opposed corners, otherwise in very good condition Rexroth's notes date the painting to 1925, and give the remark: "?Cubist' colors as of the period", perhaps an allusion to Braque's palette. A man and a woman in profile turned towards each other, the painting recalls Francis Picabia's work with its rounded, curvilinear forms. The colors of the painting are monochromatic shades of gray brightening to blue, and beige deepening into black. For the 1981 UCSB retrospective, Rexroth gave the painting the title "Abstraction: The Dignity of Jugglers Affected by Night". San Francisco Museum of Art label on the back, with title given as "Abstraction", dated "6/29/42". [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Pastora ki [Pastorals]. Drzeworyty Tadeusza Makowskiego

Polskie Towarzystwo Przyjació Ksi ki, Paris 1925 - Quarto (26 × 21 cm). Original pictorial wrappers with a woodcut by Makowski; twelve woodcuts, of which six full- page; 34, [3] pp. Very good. Considered one of the most beautiful Polish artist books of the twentieth-century, this edition of twelve modernist Christmas carols is illustrated with striking primitivist woodcuts by Tadeusz Makowski (1882-1932), a Polish painter active in Paris. Futurist poet and painter Czy ewski (1880-1945) was one of the founders of the "Formist" group, the main avant-garde organization in Poland from 1917-22; from 1922 to 1930 he lived in Paris, where he exhibited widely. "The Pastoralki is both a modern work and at the same time one that reaches into the wealth of folk art. Its modernity finds expression in conceiving folkiness as an artistic inspiration far removed from the ethnographic folklorism; it also expresses itself in a close relationship to dadaism" (Wyka 104). One of 520 copies, this one unnumbered and unsigned. Printed on handmade laid paper by Joseph Joubert-Fournier in Auvergne. With the mark of the Polish Association of Bibliophiles to the title page, a woodcut by Konstanty Brandel. See Gro ska 368. Rypson 21. First Edition published by William Blackwood And Sons in 1925. First issue with dark blue cloth and gilt titling. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Some light pushing at the spine ends. Some toning to the text-block with some spotting to the prelims and endpapers. Occasional light spot to the pages in places. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Toning to the edges, folds and the spine. Light creasing and mild edge-wear at the spine ends with a little loss. Light archival tape repairs to the spine folds on the verso. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been Inscribed and Signed By the Author to the front blank endpaper: 'Signed with pleasure and warmest regards for my friend, fellow poet and fellow scot, Maurice Lindsay, Hugh M'Diarmid, 14/9/74'. With Maurice Lindsay's bookplate to the front pastedown and his signature in green ink to the front end-paper. The recipient Maurice Lindsay was a Scottish broadcaster, writer and poet. He became a radio broadcaster, also editing the 1946 'Anthology Modern Scottish Poetry', and writing music criticism. He later became Programme Controller at Border Television. Hugh MacDiarmid (C.M. Grieve) was Scotland's most influential and controversial writer in the 20th century. He urged and enabled the regeneration of all aspects of Scotland's literature and culture through his poetry, polemical writing and political activity. 'A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle' (1926) is generally regarded as Scotland's masterpiece of Modernism. 'He started writing in Scots, using words and phrases he knew from boyhood and acquired from reading in dictionaries and works of Scottish literature from earlier eras. The poems of Sangschaw (1925), Penny Wheep (1926) and A Drunk Man Looks At The Thistle (1926) were shocking, adult, wry, rebarbative, difficult, piercingly sweet, unsentimental and brutal. They established a new dispensation for Scottish literature, and modernist lusts: for the body and the sexually explicit cognate with Joyce and Lawrence; for the local and demotic, cognate with William Carlos Williams; for the difficult, cognate with Eliot; for the vatic and austere, cognate with Yeats and Pound; for the intellectually demanding, cognate with Stevens and Valéry; but uniquely in the Scottish context, reclaiming a literary history that had fallen into neglect and obfuscation. Forget about Burns, he advised, go back to Dunbar and Henryson, recover and reclaim a national tradition that goes back through millennia.' (Scottish Poetry Library). A wonderful signed association copy of the author's first poetry collection and scarce with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

        Leon Bakst

1925. First Edition . (BAKST, Leon) LEVINSOHN, Andre. Leon Bakst. Berlin: Verlag Ernst Wasmuth, [1925]. Folio (11 by 14-1/2 inches), original full vellum, uncut; original slipcase. $3500.Limited first German edition of Levinsohn's life of Bakst, number 23 of only 250 copies produced, tracing the artist's important contributions to the history of modern art and dance, with 68 full-page mounted plates of costumes and sets, 52 in color, including the frontispiece portrait of Bakst by Modigliani, and numerous in-text mounted linecuts and photogravures, many also in color.""In the book of fame, the name of Léon Bakst is writ largeÂ… He was destined to modify profoundly the whole conception of the western stage."" A gifted painter, Bakst is best remembered for the sets and costumes he designed for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in the early decades of the 20th century. His exotic and sumptuous designs, in conjunction with Diaghilev's radical and provocative choreography, helped revitalize ballet and lay the framework for modern interpretive dance. It was the Ballets Russes that first brought such classics as Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty to the West, featuring scenery and costumes by Bakst. This ""luxurious volume of color plates"" contains beautiful designs from many of the Russian ballet's most renowned productions, including Firebird, Blue God, Cleopatra, Narcissus, and Bakst's famous Scheherazade (Steegmuller, 78). ""Bakst's greatest claim to theatrical glory lies in his feeling for synthesis, in his impeccable instinct for harmony"" (Levinson). Preceded by the 1922 American edition and the 1923 English and French editions. Text in German. See Freitag 422. Text and plates clean and fine. Expert repair to vellum along rear joint, minor toning to spine, binding attractive. Moderate wear to original slipcase. An extremely good copy of this splendid production.

Number 66 of an edition of 150. A wonderful collection of images celebrating reading, study, and well-appointed libraries. Bochorakova-Dittrichova primarily worked in woodcut, so the engravings are a rare and interesting component of this early work. Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova (1894-1980) was the first female wordless novelist, and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday. She was born in the Moravian region of what is now the Czech Republic and spent most of her life in Brno, the Moravian capital. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1923 received a government scholarship to study printmaking in Paris. Bochorakova-Dittrichova's unpublished wordless novel Malířka Na Cestách [The Artist on Her Journey] recounts this period in her life. In Paris, she first encountered the wordless novels of Flemish artist Franz Masereel, the originator of the form, and was inspired to create her own. Over the course of her long career, Bochorakova-Dittrichova published several wordless novels, along with travelogues and historical works. She also worked as a printmaker and illustrator, and was highly regarded in her native land, though largely unknown elsewhere. This changed in 2014, when the National Museum of Women in the Arts held an exhibition of her work entitled "The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova," and this important artist finally began to gain global recognition. Her work, however, is still not widely available. [Attributes: First Edition]
