        POLISH FUTURISM: KWADRATY [SQUARES].

Zamosc: Zamojskie Kolo Milosnikow Ksazki 1925 - 8°. 30 pp., [1] index, original tan wrappers with title lithographed in blue and yellow (Very Good, slightly age-toned, wrappers with tiny tears in the spine). A rare, attractively designed book with poetry in Polish, was one of the early works by the founder of Polish Futurism Stanislaw Mlodozeniec. This attractive book with poetry in Polish language was written and designed by the founder of the Polish futurism Stanislaw Mlodozeniec (1895 - 1959). Born in Dobrocice, Mlodozeniec spent his school years in Russia, where he witnessed the Revolution, which forced him to move back to Poland, where he enrolled the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. At the end of 1919, beginning of 1920, Stanislaw Mlodozeniec founded, together with a futurist painter Tytus Czyzewski and a poet Bruno Jasie?ski, the Futurist Club "Katarynka" and organized with them the first evening of futuristic poetry in Krakow. In 1920s he moved to Warsaw, where he worked as a teacher, author, thater reviewer, and developed strong connections with the artists. Stanislaw Mlodozeniec was mobilised at the beginning of WWII on September 19, 1939, and trensferred to Hungary. In June 1940 he escaped through Yugoslavia and Constantinople to Syria, where he joined of the Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade. Mlodozeniec travelled with the brigade through Egypt and Palestine, where he was involved in the army theatre. He was the author of the lyrics of the Brigade’s song and an editor of the Polish newspaper Gazeta Polskiej, printed in Jerusalem. In June 1942 he moved to London, where he joined the Propaganda Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Government of Emigration, and in 1943 the secret Polish radio Dawn. After WWII Stanislaw Mlodozeniec moved back to Warsaw, where he died in 1959. We could not trace any examples of the book in institutions outside Poland.         ALBUM OF ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THREE ARCTIC EXPEDITIONS COMMANDED BY DONALD BAXTER MacMILLAN].

[Various places, including Labrador, Baffin Island, Ellesmere Island, and Greenland. 1921-1925]. - Eighty-three silver gelatin photographs, plus four photo postcards, most approximately 3 x 5 inches. Oblong quarto. Contemporary black faux leather, cord-tied photo album. Edges and hinges worn. Photos in corner mounts on black paper supports. Manuscript captions on supports in white pencil throughout. Very good. A collection of eighty-seven images from three different Arctic voyages commanded or co-commanded by Donald Baxter MacMillan in the early 1920s. MacMillan made over thirty voyages to the Arctic during a nearly fifty year career that spanned the first half of the 20th century. After World War I, he designed and commissioned his own schooner, named the Bowdoin, specifically for Arctic exploration. The photos in this album document the first two expeditions made by the craft to Baffin Island in 1921-22, and to North Greenland, Ellesmere Island, and several other locations in 1923-24, as well as a third exploration, also to Greenland, made jointly with another ship called the Peary in 1925. The present images depict many views of the Bowdoin and the Peary, as well as sea planes transported into the Arctic by the Peary for testing, detail features of the passing landscape, seascape, and document local wildlife. Further photos show the activities of the men in camp and in the course of their duties, such as building, dog sledding, hiking, and ship loading. Finally, a number of pictures record the lives of the native Eskimo populations and show the ruins of building left by early Norse explorers. A varied and lively collection of photographs, that document an important set of 20th-century Arctic voyages.

        [Photo Album]: Lincoln Highway Construction

Indiana and Kentucky, 1925. Fine. Small oblong octavo. Measuring 8" x 6.5". String-tied with papercovered boards with "Photographs" inside an outline of a flag in gilt on the front. Contents include 54 tipped-in gelatin silver photographs and 19 loose photos laid-in. Each measures 2.75" x 4.5", and almost all are captioned under the image on a tipped-on piece of paper or, in the case of the laid-in images, on their back. The album is about fine with light wear at the edges; photographs are fine. This album documents the construction of the Lincoln Highway across the state of Indiana and its junction with the Dixie Highway. The Lincoln Highway was one of the first transcontinental automobile highways in the United States. It was conceived in 1912 by an Indiana businessman, Carl G. Fisher, and formally dedicated October 31, 1913. It ran coast-to-coast from New York City's Times Square to San Francisco's Lincoln Park. Initially, less than half of the route was paved. In an effort to provide the public with a vision of the future, Fisher obtained sponsorship from the U.S. Rubber Company to build an "Ideal Section" of roadway between Dyer and Schererville in Lake County, Indiana that had concrete roadbeds, wide banked curves with guard rails, no crossings, and a parallel pedestrian footpath. Fischer also initiated the construction of the Dixie Highway which actually was a series of north-south roads that linked northern Michigan and Chicago with Miami, Florida. The mounted photos in this album are of work on the Lincoln highway and its junction with the Dixie Highway showing the work crew, crew lodgings, steamrollers, tractors, tar-spreading trucks, trucks dumping stone, stone-spreading by hand, leveling, loading of tar and stone into company trucks from railcars, vehicles and equipment stuck in sand and mud, and the finished roadway including the Ideal Section. The 19 laid-in photographs show roadwork near Bargetown, Burnside, Harrodsburg, Livingston, and Stanford, Kentucky. These images are similar to the Lincoln Highway photos but also include a steam shovel, mule team, and three African-American boys, who according to a caption entertained the work crew with Stephen Foster songs. An important visual history of the first major transcontinental road construction project in the United States from the viewpoint of one of the workers.

Oeuvre originale

[INFLUENTIAL FILM THEORIES] Kul'tura kino [i.e. The Culture of Film]

Moscow; Leningrad: Gosizdat, 1925. 96 pp. 23x16 cm. In original constructivist wrappers designed by Boris Ender (1893-1960), Soviet avant-garde artist. Very good, small repairs of the front cover, loss of the spine and back cover (neatly replaced with paper of same color), small tears of the last page (repaired). First Russian translation. Translated from the German original Der sichtbare Mensch [i.e. Visible Man, or the Culture of Film], first published in 1924. Edited and with introduction by Adrian Piotrovsky (1898-1937), art director of Leningrad Film Studio. Supplemented with short review of Charlie Chaplin and Soviet cinema. The famous work by Bela Balazs (1884-1949), Hungarian-Jewish film critic and writer, probably the first major work on film theory. It had a big influence on such major Russian filmmakers as Vsevolod Pudovkin and Sergei Eisenstein, and were among the first studies to examine filmic syntax, grammar, and editorial structure. ''In this ninety-page treatise, Balázs stakes a claim for film as an art that may restore to modernity the lost expressive capacities of the visual body. Under such headings as 'Type and Physiognomy', 'The Play of Facial Expressions', 'The Close-Up' and 'The Face of Things', he presents a typology of expressive elements which together comprise the 'only shared universal language', the image-language of film''.
