Oeuvre originale

[INFLUENTIAL FILM THEORIES] Kul'tura kino [i.e. The Culture of Film]

Moscow; Leningrad: Gosizdat, 1925. 96 pp. 23x16 cm. In original constructivist wrappers designed by Boris Ender (1893-1960), Soviet avant-garde artist. Very good, small repairs of the front cover, loss of the spine and back cover (neatly replaced with paper of same color), small tears of the last page (repaired). First Russian translation. Translated from the German original Der sichtbare Mensch [i.e. Visible Man, or the Culture of Film], first published in 1924. Edited and with introduction by Adrian Piotrovsky (1898-1937), art director of Leningrad Film Studio. Supplemented with short review of Charlie Chaplin and Soviet cinema. The famous work by Bela Balazs (1884-1949), Hungarian-Jewish film critic and writer, probably the first major work on film theory. It had a big influence on such major Russian filmmakers as Vsevolod Pudovkin and Sergei Eisenstein, and were among the first studies to examine filmic syntax, grammar, and editorial structure. ''In this ninety-page treatise, Balázs stakes a claim for film as an art that may restore to modernity the lost expressive capacities of the visual body. Under such headings as 'Type and Physiognomy', 'The Play of Facial Expressions', 'The Close-Up' and 'The Face of Things', he presents a typology of expressive elements which together comprise the 'only shared universal language', the image-language of film''.         The Making of Americans. Being a History of a Family's Progress

Paris: Contact Editions, Three Mountains Press, 1925. First edition. Quarto in contemporary quarter black morocco; spine slightly toned; corners gently rubbed. Uncut and largely unopened after page 60. Original printed wrappers bound in. A Fine Copy of this scarce modernist work, with the ownership signature of literary critic and Stein supporter William Troy. As a patron of the arts, Stein used the Paris home she shared with partner Alice B. Toklas to foster the talents of avant-garde artists from Pablo Picasso to T.S. Eliot. In her own writing, Stein pushed against the Victorian literary boundaries of the preceding period, and in publishing The Making of Americans she solidified her legacy as an icon of modernism and the matriarch of the Lost Generation. "Her ambition [was] a literary plasticity divorced from narrative sequence and consequence and hence from literary meaning. She was trying to transform literature from a temporal into a purely spatial art, to use words for their own sake alone" (Schorer). By defying expectations surrounding narrative plot and character, The Making of Americans succeeds in this, and it has been praised as "resolutely American and indisputably original" (Grolier Club). This copy bears the penciled ownership inscription of William Troy, dated "N.H. 1926." An academic and critic, Troy was teaching in New Hampshire following his graduation from Yale in 1925. He later married poet Léonie Adams, a fixture in Stein's Paris salon. Troy notably defended Stein's work against the sort of ridicule that her irregular prose tended to attract, writing of her later book The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas: "among books of literary reminiscences Miss Stein's is one of the richest, wittiest, and most irreverent ever written." It would appear, however, that he did not finish the present work, as the pages remain unopened after page 60. One of only 500 copies published, 100 of which were used to make the 1926 first American edition (Wilson A6). Grolier Club Emerging Voices: American Women Writers.

5 novels by Sherwood Anderson, being association copies, signed or inscribed to family members (Dark Laughter, Kit Brandon, No Swank, Sherwood Anderson's Notebook, and also a signed reprint of Winesburg, Ohio)

Various: Various, Various. Various. Good -. Please read this description carefully to note condition and signature details. Four books inscribed by Sherwood Anderson to various of his family members, and a single Modern library reprint of Winesburg, Ohio, simply signed on the title page (with condition issues - see below). All books lack dust jackets, if applicable. Item 1: DARK LAUGHTER: Boni and Liveright, 1925 - First edition. A good copy at best in the publisher's black cloth. Spine cocked, hinges gently cracked, and some soiling along the extremities. Internally quite clean, despite external condition. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Anderson to "Cornelia" (Cornelia Pratt Lane Anderson), the author's first wife. The two had been divorced for nearly a decade (since not long after his infamous "breakdown" in 1912) when the book came out, but she was the mother of three of Sherwood's children. Thus the economical, yet probably sincere, inscription reads: "To Cornelia, with love, Sherwood." Item 2: KIT BRANDON: Scribner's, 1936 - First edition. A good copy in the publisher's black cloth, with white titling. Worn at the spine ends, particularly at the crown, which shows some loss above the title. Internally bright and clean. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Anderson to his daughter, Marian (also called "Mimi"), and her husband, Russell: "To Russell and Marion Spear, with love, Sherwood Anderson." Item 3: NO SWANK: Centaur, 1934 - First edition. A good copy at best in the publisher's balck cloth. Shallow insect damage to a few parts o the cloth, and more serious damage to the front free endpaper. On that leaf is this inscription from Anderson: "For Russell and Mimi. Christmas. 1934. Sherwood Anderson." (The insect damage approaches the inscription, and may have cut off the last two or three letters of his signature, but the rest of the inscription is perfectly legible.) Item 4: SHERWOOD ANDERSON'S NOTEBOOK. Boni and Liveright, 1926 - Limited edition, and, in place of the number is written "presentation copy." A good copy only, with soiling to the spine, general wear to cloth, and foxing to the endpapers. SIGNED by Anderson both on the limitation page, and on the front free endpaper, with this inscription to his daughter: "To Miss Marian Anderson, a birthday gift from her father on his birthday, September 13, 1931, Sherwood Anderson." Item 5: WINESBURG, OHIO. This is a Modern Library reprint, in bindng style 5.1 (per Toledano), which dates the printing to about 1930, although the only date on the copyright page states 1919. Overall good at best in the publisher's brown cloth flexible boards stamped in gilt. The last few leaves are torn with old tape repairs, affecting text. The front hinge is thinly cracked and the half-title page has an old tape repair, as well. With these unfortunate flaws and the missing dust jacket, this would be essentially a worthless book, however this one is boldly and wonderfully SIGNED by Anderson on the half-title page. As noted above, there are tape repairs around that leaf, but the signature is completely unaffected. There is an old bookseller ticket, partially torn, on the rear paste-down, and a previous owner's name on the front free endpaper. An entirely unsophisticated and rather worn example, but this work remains Anderson's great literary triumph, and signed copies of this title are uncommon, regardless of edition. Housed in a brand-new custom-made clamshell box, in quarter yellow calf and yellow-gold cloth. The association copies were acquired from an experienced and respected book dealer, who in turn purchased them from a descendant of Marian Anderson. All in all, a set of Sherwood Anderson inscriptions, in sincerely regrettable condition, but still intact, shelf-worthy, and representing a decent cross-section of his literary works. Suited for anyone building a Sherwood Anderson collection, or any collector of modern first editions who prizes the uniqueness of an inscription over the condition of any particular book.

Title pages printed in red and black; text printed in black with red borders. Contents across five volumes being: 281; 345; 270; 290; and 333 pages. In the early stages of his collecting activity he focused on European medieval and renaissance art and 18th century ceramics alongside Japanese art, but he soon diversified into early Chinese art, especially after 1906. He not only made use of the services of experts or agents, but also relied on his own rapidly growing experience in acquiring objects. His collection of Oriental art grew to an enormous size, obliging him to add a two-storey extension to the back of his Chelsea house. He founded the Oriental Ceramic Society and was its first president from 1921 until his death in 1939. He organised and funded the publication of eleven volumes illustrating and describing items from his collection during the 1920s and early 1930s. [Wikipedia].

129 pp. rare first and only issue of the serial, edited by Richard Linsert and related to paragraph 175 of the German criminal code which made homosexual acts between men a crime, and the proposal in 1925 under the guise of the "protection of public health" to increase the penalties associated with committed acts as well as a new paragraph 297 which would have made "qualified cases" such as homosexual prostitution and sex with minors "severe cases" classified as felonies instead of misdemeanors, and including opinions from important cultural figures including Adolf Behne, Alfred Döblin, Albert Einstein, Max Hermann-Neiße, Kurt Hiller, Theodor Lessing, Ernst Toller, Bruno Vogel, and others. Not illustrated. Large 8vo. Original typographic wrpps. Small loss to lower right corner of front cover, cover reglued, minor abrasions along edges. Berlin (Neuer Deutscher Verlag) 1929.         The Fundamental Equations of Quantum Mechanics

The Royal Society, London 1925 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Dirac's first major paper; a major achievement in the advancement of the new quantum theory. "Dirac's first step into a new quantum theory was taken late in September 1925. R H Fowler, his research supervisor, had received a proof copy of an exploratory paper by Werner Heisenberg in the framework of the old quantum theory of Bohr and Sommerfeld, which leaned heavily on Bohr's correspondence principle but changed the equations so that they involved directly observable quantities. Fowler sent Heisenberg's paper on to Dirac, who was on vacation in Bristol, asking him to look into this paper carefully. Dirac's attention was drawn to a mysterious mathematical relationship, at first sight unintelligible, that Heisenberg had reached. Several weeks later, back in Cambridge, Dirac suddenly recognized that this mathematical form had the same structure as the Poisson Brackets that occur in the classical dynamics of particle motion. From this thought he quickly developed a quantum theory that was based on non-commuting dynamical variables. This led him to a more profound and significant general formulation of quantum mechanics than was achieved by any other worker in this field. This was a major achievement that marked him out from others in the field. As a young, 25-year-old physicist he was quickly accepted by outstanding physicists. Dirac's quantum mechanics takes a simple and beautiful form, with a structure showing elegance and economy of concept, and linked directly with the classical theory" (Dalitz, Paul Dirac). Provenance: With stamp of City & Guilds College on front and back of wrappers; presentation bookplate from Professor William Ernest Dalby (Dean of the College) loosely affixed to first page. IN: Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Series A, Vol. 109, pp. 642-653. London: The Royal Society, 1925. Octavo, original wrappers; custom box. Light wear to spine; mild soiling.
