Beaumont, Cyril W.
London: C. W. Beaumont, 1924. Payne, William. Octavo. (iv), 32, (2)pp. One of 110 copies printed as a deluxe edition with signatures of both author and illustrator. Illustrations throughout, three of which are full-page images, all with the same green, red, yellow, and light brown color palette. The story, set during the Christmas season, recounts the sudden appearance of a magical toy shop and the resultant amazement and uproar among the townspeople. The shop includes acrobats who fly through the air, knights who joust against one another, lifelike animals and dolls, and a precious dancer who moved her whole body to music played from a box. This last item bears striking resemblance to the famed nineteenth-century ballerina Marie Taglioni, who is considered the first ballerina to truly dance en pointe. The particular attention to the dancer-doll's details, apparent in both the text and in the rich illustrations, is due to the Beaumont's own prominence in the world of dance. Beaumont, a dance historian, spent his life recording, analyzing, and promoting dance. He was a friend of Italian ballet master Enrico Cecchetti and, along with dancer Stanislas Idzikowski, worked to perseve the Cecchetti method of teaching. The resulting techinical manual, publishing in 1922, is still used today to train dancers around the world. Bound in decorated papers over boards, with gilt-stamped spine. Some rubbing to corners, half-inch tear to dedication page, else fine.

Rebound with new marbled endpapers, half-bound in brown morocco with gilt spine titles, five raised bands and marbled boards, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, original spines bound in. Minor shelf wears and rubbing to the corners. A great set! Numerous engraved text illustrations and vignettes. First edition. Two volumes. "Of the few standard works on the art of printing in the English language, this is perhaps the most familiar. It abounds with information of a very useful character, spiced with conceits manifesting the originality, humour and freshness of the author. The type, never larger than brevier, sometimes is as small as pearl; and the intricacy of the composition evinces the wonderful patience of Johnson. The second volume may be described as practical, in contradiction to the first, which is historical. It gives a description of types, directions for composing, for press, and warehouse work, &c. It is particularly rich in foreign alphabets, a feature which has gained for it great estimation." (Bigmore & Wyman I pp. 371-73).

James Gould Cozzens
Boston: B. J. Brimmer, 1924. First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good. 404 pages. The first novel, written while he was a Harvard undergraduate, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author. First edition (first printing in the original publisher's green binding with the top edge of the page block dyed red). Some wear to the extremities, but a nice-enough copy. This copy is generically inscribed (be still the hearts of modern firsts collectors who disdain names written in their books). 'With the kindest regards of the author, James Gould Cozzens. April 12, 1924.' According to the copyright office, the novel received its copyright on April 3, 1924, making this one of the first copies Cozzens signed. Rather uncommon. [JSP02] First Edition

Anderson, Sherwood
New York: B. W. Huebsch, 1924. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. First edition, 1924, 8vo, dark ruddy cloth stamped in yellow, in dust jacket, 442 pp, very good copy, rear inner hinge cracking a bit, jacket VG plus with slight darkening. Inscribed, 'Cornelia Anderson, with love, Sherwood Anderson' on front flyleaf. Cornelia was Anderson's first wife from 1904 till 1916. By 1924 when this book was published he was just entering his third marriage. It could be that he maintained amicable relations with Cornelia, as they had three children together. Provenance is from Ian Richardson, a book dealer in Denver who is non-ABAA, so although the signature looks right to us, no guarantees.

France, Anatole
New York: Gabriel Wells, 1924. Finely bound set of the Works of Anatole France. Octavo, 30 volumes bound in full elaborate gold-tooled morocco, gilt topstain, extra-illustrated throughout with original watercolors on the text leaves, each signed "WHD," set number 94 of 575 signed on the limitation page by Anatole France. In near fine condition. A stunning example. Anatole France was a French poet, journalist, and novelist. He was a successful novelist, with several best-sellers. Ironic and skeptical, he was considered the ideal French man of letters. He was a member of the Academie francaise, and won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his brilliant literary achievements, characterized as they are by a nobility of style, a profound human sympathy, grace, and a true Gallic temperament". France is also widely believed to be the model for narrator Marcel's literary idol Bergotte in Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time.
