Condition: Good. A Good/Very Good, ultra-rare, early 4th printing, 1924 edition, hardback book. Printing history after title page (see pictures). First printing of a 1000 copies, second printing of 2000 copies of which 500 were burned and third printing of 500 copies of which 499 were seized. So when this edition was published only 2501 copies were already in existence and today, considerably less that that, making this edition ultra-rare. Book is in a period leather binding and text block is probably trimmed. Complete with half-title, title and four pages of corrections at rear (original wraps not bound in). Book boards show wear all around and text block browning, but square, tightly bound and unmarked internally. For all it's faults still an ultra-rare early copy of this seminal Irish publication. Excellent collectable/investment item. Published by Shakespeare and Company, 12 Rue De L'Odeon, Paris, 1924. [Attributes: First Edition]

SEGUY, E[ugene] A[lain].
Paris Du Chartre et van Buggenhoudt, 1924. 8 lithographs hand-coloured en pochoir. Framed and glazed, overall size 52.5 x 40.5 cm. Superb lithographs by the master of the format. "In comparison with their variety and brilliance, much Art Deco illustration seems pallid and constrained. And of course their large format makes them particularly attractive for exhibition purposes" (Ray, The Art Deco Book in France). E.A. Seguy (1889-1985), was active as an artist in Paris from 1900 to 1925. His mastery of decorative design and colour is evident in the series of 11 beautiful pochoir portfolios he created. Unusual in his capacity to span the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, Seguy's portfolios remain exquisite examples of ornamentation and composition, featuring motifs based on the natural world, including flowers, foliage, crystals and animals.

Denton, Sherman Foote
[Massachusetts, etc.? ca. late 1890s to 1924]. 11 pages. Holograph manuscript lists of common and Latin names, some marginal corrections and notes, one leaf docketed on verso with accounts, 1922-1924; Nassau Fishes with prices of specimens. 4to. Old folds, some stains. Very good. Portraits near fine and fine. Reuter p. 195. Sherman Foote Denton (1856-1937), a Massachusetts native and the child of an abolitionist and a radical feminist, was an accomplished artist from his youth. He travelled the world, collecting and illustrating natural history specimens. Denton was adept at preserving specimens, especially butterflies and fish. He was author of As Nature Shows Them. Moths and Butterflies of the United States East of the Rocky Mountains (1900), and is most widely known now for his ichythological work, some of which appeared in the important series of annual reports of the New York State Fisheries, Game and Forest Commission, 1895-1905; and in publications of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The list of "West Coast fishes collected" includes a note "For a good many of the fishes I have neither a common nor a scientific name as yet S.F.D." The list of "Fishes of the East Coast" includes many of the species he illustrated. Both show signs of revisions and additions. The two portraits depict Sherman in early adulthood (by F.J. Williams, Natick, Mass.) and some years later (by Partridge Studios, Boston, Brookline). A choice group of material from a noted American illustrator.

A commentary on the racial tensions of native Indians in British occupied India and the English themselves, "A Passage to India" gives an inside look at a country torn apart by injustice and prejudice. Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman, who was planning a new children's magazine. "On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales, [Milne] escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse, and for 11 days wrote a set of children's verses, one each day... 'There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years [his son, Christopher Robin]... and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.' Moscow: Trud i kniga, 1924. 72 pp., 12 sheet music. 22,5x15 cm. In contemporary cardboards, the original constructivist covers preserved. Very good, rubbed, library stamps on the t.p. with cancellations stamps over them. First and only edition. One of 8000 copies produced. Rare. This is a collection of works re ected the early experimental period in celebrating of the May Day (First of May). This celebration had unprecedented importance in Soviet Union. A rally looked good as a weapon in the period of the revolution and Civil War. After that the country required another form ensuring the mass involvement of people. The rst attempts to theatricalise the processions widely spread and transformed the festive demonstration into political carnival. It became possible because of the amateur performances in the worker's clubs. In 1924 the USSR organized the rst May Day without Lenin. The organization of event differed from the previous years, but the celebration had occurred. This book gathered the works by Mayakovsky, Tretiakov, Gorodetskii, Aseev for the mass choral declamation. It was performed by a crowd or groups using the loud voices and, for the better organization, the works were published with the indicated different pauses. Some of them were accompanied by the music. The book is supplemented with 12 sheet music containing 3 works. The last one was created by a lm composer Kliment Korchmariov on Gorodetskii's chastushki. A list of books on the history and contemporary organization of the May Day contains 18 titles. The only copy located at the Library of Congress.

Moscow: Krasnyi mayak, 1924. 8 pp.: ill. 65x54 cm. Very good. A very fragile newspaper with tears of the extremities and spine, ink stamp of the non-existing library (Lenin's institute). An extremely rare survival of the time. Page 8 with advertisements including an illustrated ad for ABC with poem by Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930). Mayakovsky started to work in advertising in 1922 and continued till his death. The greatest number of ad texts created by him falls on period from 1923 to 1925. He wrote texts for lea ets, newspaper ads, advertising posters, candy, wrappers, cookie boxes, etc. His views on Soviet advertising, to which he attached great agitational and political signi cance, Mayakovsky expounded in the article of 1923 'Agitation and Advertising': ''We know perfectly the power of agitation. In every military victory, in every economic success, nine tens comes from the skill and strength of our agitation... Advertising is industrial, commercial agitation... We must not abandon this weapon, this agitation of trade in the hands of the NEPman, in the hands of a bourgeois foreigner''. Mayakovsky insisted that the poet should work on advertising in full force of his talent. The work on collecting advertising texts by Mayakovsky presents great dif culties. Literary bibliography of them was not conducted, almost all of them were published anonymously. Still not found some texts about the existence of which there is information. The promoted ABC (titled ''From the Village. ABC'') was the most popular news textbook with a nes alphabet and letters which were eliminated aft … [Click Below for Full Description]

GREAT BRITAIN - LONDON)
London. The Westminster Press. Copyright 1914. [ 1924]. Gill, MacDonald (mapmaker). Color pictorial / pictographic map 29 1/4 x 36 1/2 inches, professionally mounted on linen minimising pinhole at each corner, short tears to upper left corner, tiny infill to upper right corner, infill to upper left fold. Presents very handsomely. Originally published in 1914 as an advertising poster for the London Underground, this design proved so popular that it was subsequently issued in several different editions. It has been suggested that this particular edition with an image of a lion and "On to Wembley" at the upper left of the map was issued at the time of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition at Wembley (Roderick Barron). An outstanding and innovative graphic - an explosion of color and humor - it sparked a revival in interest in decorative cartography around the world which continues today, a century later.

A wonderful rare book of 1924 children's classic with stunning drawings by Jack Roberts A very scarce and stunningly produced children's tale about Ludo, a duck from Normandy, who sets off on a round-the-world solo flight. The book traces his travels from place to place: Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, "Araby" and Mecca, India, China, Japan, South Sea Islands, North America, Africa, and back to France. Typical of the era, the curious portrayal of various lands and peoples often borders on caricature or stereotype. Ludo observes the "quaint divinities of the inhabitants" in India; "plays with the little chin-chin Chinamen"; visits the King of the Cannibals, who threatens to eat him, "if not for your smart coating"; and is "captured by an [American] Indian." Description Scarce and First Edition. Written & illustrated by Jack Roberts. Illustrated with colour, and in green and black on virtually every other page. The most extraordinary feature of the book is its vibrant, Art Deco - influenced illustrations. Text is done in calligraphy and the overall style is classic Art Deco. A map of 'the wonderful journey of Ludo, the Little Green Duck' at the rear. Published by London, The Poetry Bookshop. Tolmer, Paris, 1924. Good Condition. Pictorial handmade paper-covered boards with drawing and black lettering on front board. Book Dimensions: 18.4 x 18.4 x 1cm Condition Wear to extremities. Slight tear to upper s … [Click Below for Full Description]

KAFKA, FRANZ
Berlin: Die Schmiede, 1924. First edition. original cloth. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF THE LAST WORK KAFKA PREPARED FOR PUBLICATION, CONTAINING THE FIRST BOOK APPEARANCE OF FOUR STORIES, INCLUDING THE CLASSIC TITLE STORY "THE HUNGER ARTIST". Ein Hungerhünstkler, Vier Geschichten "was published by Die Schmiede, a publishing house in Berlin, shortly after Kafka's death in October 1924. In addition to the title story, it included "Erstes Leid" ("First Sorrow"), "Eine kleine Frau" ("A Little Woman"), and "Josefine, die Sängerin oder Das Volk der Mäuse" ("Josephine the Singer, or the Mouse Folk"). All four stories had been previously published either in newspapers or literary supplements... Although Max Brod had usually arranged for the publication of Kafka's texts and, in fact, had brought Kafka to the attention of Die Schmiede, Kafka himself negotiated the terms for this volume in 1923. Kafka received a small advance, which he dearly needed for his care and treatment during the last few months of his life and arranged for all royalties from the volume to go to Dora Diamant after his death. He received the proofs in Kierling during the last week of his life, and in one of the Gesprächsblätter (conversation slips) -- the means by which he communicated after he could no longer talk and had difficultly swallowing -- lamented that they had waited so long to send him the material. Nonetheless, with what little strength he had left, he corrected the galleys up until the last day of his life" (Gray, Gross, Goebel, A Franz Kafka Encyclopedia). Berlin: Die Schmiede, 1924.
