HEMINGWAY, ERNEST.
Paris: Three Mountains Press, 1924. First Edition of Hemingway's second book; one of 170 numbered copies. Binder's glue stains on endpapers, as usual; some rubbing; chipping at the extremities; a very good copy in a cloth slipcase, with chemise. Presentation copy; inscribed on the front free endpaper, 'For Bertram and Gusta Hartman with love from Ernest Hemingway/ Paris 1924.' Hartman, an American painter, married a German photographer's assistant who made an unsuccessful business of selling hooked rugs based on her husband's designs. Hemingway wrote an apparently unkind sketch about them. On the recommendation of the artist, Hemingway, with his wife and son, found cheap accomodation in the Austrian Alps, where Hartman was his bowling companion, and where he painted a watercolor of the author. Inscribed copies of this book are considerably scarcer than Three Stories and Ten Poems, accounted for only in part by the larger printing of the first book. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

KAFKA, FRANZ. - [KAFKA'S LAST PUBLICATION TO BE PREPARED BY HIMSELF]
Berlin, Die Schmiede, 1924. Uncut in the original publisher's full green cloth, with the printed paper-title-label to spine and front board. Spine faded, and inner front hinge a little bitweak, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. First edition of the last of Kafka's publications to be prepared by himself; published posthumously, however. It is a collection of four short stories including the title-story "Ein Hungerkünstler" (i.e. "A Fasting Artist" or "A Starvation Artist). The three other stories being "Erstes Leid", "Eine kleine Frau" and "Josefine, die Sängerin, oder das Volk der Mäuse", all four exhibiting the concision and lucidity characteristic of Kafka's later period. Among his papers, a document was found, which was written in October 1922 and called "my last will concerning all I have written", in which he states: "Of all my writings the only books that count are these: "The Judgement", "The Stoker", "Metamorphosis", "In the Penal Colony", "A Country Doctor" and the short story "A Fasting Artist". ( Murray, "Kafka", p. 348).The title story "Ein Hungerkünstler" originally appeared in 1922, in "Die Neue Rundschau". It is the tale of a trapeze artist who, as the only way of keeping his art at the pitch of perfection, remains up on the trapeze permanently day and night. Even when the circus is travelling from one location to another, the trapeze hangs upside down from the luggage rack. "Ein Hungerkünstler" if often interpreted as a dramatized expression of Kafka's ill health and his fear of physical and mental collapse."This is a typical Kafka short story: beautiful … [Click Below for Full Description]

KAFKA (Franz)
Munich, Kurt Wolff, 1924. 1 vol. (191 129 mm.), [vi], 1-503, [1] pp. Cartonnage éditeur bleu. Edition originale. Premier tirage. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

MAETERLINCK (maurice) - SCHWABE (Carlos)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Russische Avantgarde. - Lissitzky, El. - Ilya Selvinsky
Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

Trotski, L. (Lev Trotsky)
Tbilisi: S. S. S. R. Sakhelmts'ipo Gamomtsemloba, 1924. Octavo (22.8 × 15 cm). Original printed wrappers; 193, [1] pp. About very good, partially uncut and unopened; small owner inscription to front wrapper and light wear to spine. First Georgian edition of Trotsky's defense of violent revolution, initially published in German in 1920. Trotsky's book is a response to Karl Kautsky's pamphlet "Die Diktatur des Proletariats" (Vienna, 1918), which criticizes the Bolshevik overthrow of the beginnings of parliamentary democracy in Russia after the October Revolution. Lenin was the first to rebut Kautsky's "betrayal", insisting that the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat against the bourgeoisie was necessary and should not be encumbered by laws or moral considerations. A year later, Trotsky's book presented a longer justification for the temporary use of violence and terror in the transition to socialism, as well as a warning: "The man who repudiates the dictatorship of the proletariat repudiates the socialist revolution and digs the grave of socialism." This Georgian translation of Trotsky's work was issued after the Soviet invasion of Georgia and the creation of a Transcaucasian SFSR, together with former Armenia and Azerbaijan, in 1922. Its publication also followed the so-called Georgian Affair of 1922-1923, an important dispute about local autonomy and national interests in the region, which was ultimately decided in favor of Stalin and Ordzhonikidze, squashing Georgia's hopes of becoming an independent member state of the Soviet Union. Lenin himself followed the c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rolland was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915 "as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings." Forster, E.M.
Longmans, Green & Co / Edward Arnold & Co., Toronto & London, 1924. Red cloth, stamped in black. Cloth slightly darkened, with a few small, faint spots, rear free endsheet neatly excised, else a very good copy. First edition, Canadian issue, bound up from the British sheets with a cancel title, in a binding equivalent to the London binding, but with a Longmans spine imprint. The Arnold London adverts remain intact at the end. Scarce - unrecorded by Kirkpatrick, who is normally scrupulously attentive to such bibliographic subtleties. We've had only one other copy of this Canadian issue, and as (only) an interesting relative measure, OCLC reports six copies with this imprint, as against over 120 copies with the Arnold imprint.
