MILNE, A. A.
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1924. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd.,, 1924. With decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single rule to boards with pictorial motifs, twin rule to turn-ins, floral endpapers, gilt edges. With black and white illustrations. A fine copy. First edition, first impression, second state with the page number ix present in the preliminaries. In copies of the first state the contents page ix is unnumbered. The first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Efimov, B.E.]
Vol.1: [52 leaves: 1924-1936]. Vol.2: [52 leaves: 1937-1938]. 384 images. 29,5x21,5 cm. Cardboards with leather labels on spines with gilt lettering. Bindings with rubbings, occasional foxing, one clipping is lacking fragment. Otherwise very good. Handmade albums of Efimov's caricatures that were printed in Izvestia and other newspapers during these 14 years. The albums were made by Efimov himself in late 1930s to save the works he did for the newspapers. Some bear his handwritten dates when the caricatures were printed. Boris Efimov (1900-2008) the founder of the Soviet caricature school with Deni and Kukryniksy is considered the most productive of them all. His works featured in periodicals like Izvestia, Pravda, Krokodil, Chudak, etc. The watershed in his career occurred in 1938 when his brother Mikhail Koltsov, the editor-in-chief of Pravda, was arrested and executed. Efimov was fired from all the leading newspapers and had to change his pen-name to continue being published. However after Stalin's death Koltsov was rehabilitated (only around that time Efimov found out for sure what happened to his brother), Efimov was allowed everywhere and soon he was celebrated as an instant classic of Soviet political grotesques. Around 1960s the term 'positive satire' was introduced by Soviet art critics - the style that Efimov helped to develop along with Kukryniksy. Among rich Efimov's legacy the work he did for the newspapers is the most elusive. His posters, illustrations for books and magazines were reproduced in many anthologies. But not all of the newspaper images were preser … [Click Below for Full Description]

RICKETTS Charles.; SHAW George Bernard
1924. First edition, ?One of 750 copies? Folio, original quarter pale linen, decorated paper boards. London, Constable. An unusually fine copy in a similar dust jacket. The size of this book means that it is usually seen in fairly rough condition. It's a fine big production, the letterpress chunkily printed on the heavy hand-made paper, and the 16 plates are printed on a smooth art paper and mounted. Seemingly original transparent plastic tissues are present opposite all the plates. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Clay, John
Privately Printed, Chicago. This original, large octavo, 1924 first edition in dark green cloth with bright gilt titles is in "very good" condition. Top corners toed in slightly; Top Edge Gilt slightly worn but still at about 90 percent; we can find no foxing. Inscribed to blank FFE "To Capt. Tippinge from his friend John Clay." Attached to blank recto of the frontispiece author portrait is a further letterhead label from John Clay & Co., Union Stock Yards, Chicago, Ill. addressed by typewriter to "Capt. Tippinge, Duns, Scotland." A Capt. V. Gartside Tippinge, of Berrywell, Duns, Berwickshire, in the Scottish borderlands, appears to have served in the Royal Scots during the Great War. More than that we know not, save that (per the Coldtsream Local History Society) a Lt. Frank Gartside-Tippinge, 19 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, son of Vernon and Annie Gartside Tippinge of Berrywell, Duns, Berwickshire, was killed in action on 6th November 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial, Arras, France. It is believed he crashed near Passchendaele, Ypres and was the 21st and final victim of the German ace Lt. Hans Ritter von Adam, as von Adam was himself killed in action on 15th November. (19 Squadron flew the Spad V11 before replacing them with Sopwith Dolphins in late November, 1917.) All the glossy B&W photographic plates here -- including Teddy Roosevelt & Co. on horseback -- are firmly attached where they ought to be. "One of the best books on ranching." -- Everett Graff. His New Yorker pieces, fiction, and collected essays are legendary for their biting wit and mastery of caricature and language. Off and on throughout his career he worked in film, notably as a contributing screenwriter on such Hollywood comedy classics as Monkey Business and Horse Feathers with the Marx Brothers, Mike Todd's Around the World in 80 Days (for which he won an Oscar), co-creator of the hit Broadway musical comedy One Touch of Venus starring Mary Martin, as well as many publishing (including twenty-one books), radio, television, and travel writing ventures. He was the brother-in-law of the writer Nathanael West with whom he shared a close relationship up until West's death in a car accident in 1940 at age thirty-seven, and whose memory and literary reputation he devoted himself to maintai … [Click Below for Full Description]

Material: Concrete An architectural cement artifact attributed to be from Frank Lloyd Wright's Freeman House in Los Angeles, CA last originating from a departed avid Oak Park IL collector and architect measuring approximately 25 x 15 7/8 x 2 1/16 inches. This was possibly an exterior facade or walkway. Further research is underway. The gentleman developed a list of his artifacts (one being a sign from the Chicago Stock Exchange) and this is number 7 on the list and described in the listed picture. Other items from his collection are listed in my store. Ships fully insured domestically with some restrictions internationally. Thanks for looking. The Samuel and Harriet Freeman House is one of the three textile-block houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Hollywood Hills in 1924. While all three homes are beautiful and dramatic, the Freeman House has beendescribed as the clearest expression of the design rationale which underlies Wright's development of the textile block construction system: a new technology and architectural vocabulary for the Southwest. (The fourth textile block home in the region, the Millard House/La Miniatura, is located in the nearby city of Pasadena.)The Freeman House is among Wright's most interesting and enchanting small residences the living room has been called by several writers one of his best rooms. Placing the house in context, it marks a major transition in Wright's work and plays a clear role in the development of modern architecture in Southern California. The Freemans celebrated their house as one of the centers of avant-garde artistic a … [Click Below for Full Description]
