Hans Andersen
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1924. Condition: Near fine / very good +. First trade edition, quarto size, 197 pp., in original dust jacket. The fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) have been beloved by both children and adults ever since they were first published, with some tales appearing as early as 1835; often containing a moral story behind the fantasy, they have been translated into 125 different languages, and many of the stories have been adapted to screen and stage. "Fairy Tales" contains such endearing stories such as "The Hardy Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", and "The Nightingale", which are still read and cherished today. Andersen's stories are here enhanced by the illustrations of Kay Nielsen (1886-1957), a Danish book illustrator and painter who provided illustrations for many compilations of fairy tales and whose work was considered equal to that of Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. He was largely forgotten until the 1970s when his gouaches for the unpublished "A Thousand and One Nights" were collected into a book, and is likely best-known today for his illustrations for "East of the Sun and West of the Moon". His illustrations are heavily influenced by the work of Aubrey Beardsley as well as the Art Deco movement and the ornate patterns of Middle Eastern art. In "Fairy Tales", he provides both black-and-white and full-colour illustrations, which resplendently capture the spirit of Andersen's tales and the forlorn magic of the characters. DESCRIPTION: Full green cloth patterned as silk moire, gilt illustration and lettering inside ruled border on … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Good. A Good/Very Good, ultra-rare, early 4th printing, 1924 edition, hardback book. Printing history after title page (see pictures). First printing of a 1000 copies, second printing of 2000 copies of which 500 were burned and third printing of 500 copies of which 499 were seized. So when this edition was published only 2501 copies were already in existence and today, considerably less that that, making this edition ultra-rare. Book is in a period leather binding and text block is probably trimmed. Complete with half-title, title and four pages of corrections at rear (original wraps not bound in). Book boards show wear all around and text block browning, but square, tightly bound and unmarked internally. For all it's faults still an ultra-rare early copy of this seminal Irish publication. Excellent collectable/investment item. Published by Shakespeare and Company, 12 Rue De L'Odeon, Paris, 1924. [Attributes: First Edition]

"A Passage to India" by E. M. Forster. Signed limited edition, number 196/200 copies. Signed and numbered by the author in ink on the verso of the half-title page. Published by Edward Arnold & Co., London, 1924. 8vo [6" x 9"], 325 pp. The book is in very good to very good minus condition. Minor soiling and staining to the boards and spine. Cloth loss at the top of the spine. Spotting and discoloration to the paste-downs, endpapers, preliminary and terminal pages. A small stain is present at the bottom of the front gutter. The textblock is extremely clean and bright, the binding remains tight. E. M. Forster's "A Passage to India" is loosely based on the travels in India the author experienced. When a highly respected Muslim doctor is accused of sexually assaulting an Englishwoman while on a day trip, racial tensions are brought to light in the court trial that ensues. A commentary on the racial tensions of native Indians in British occupied India and the English themselves, "A Passage to India" gives an inside look at a country torn apart by injustice and prejudice.
