Toronto & London: Longmans, Green & Co / Edwin Arnold & Co., 1924. Red cloth, stamped in black. Cloth slightly darkened, with a few small, faint spots, rear free endsheet neatly excised, else a very good copy. First edition, Canadian issue, bound up from the British sheets with a cancel title, in a binding equivalent to the London binding, but with a Longmans spine imprint. The Arnold London adverts remain intact at the end. Scarce - unrecorded by Kirkpatrick, who is normally scrupulously attentive to such bibliographic subtleties. We've had only one other copy of this Canadian issue, and as (only) an interesting relative measure, OCLC reports six copies with this imprint, as against over 120 copies with the Arnold imprint.       Granula-Verlag [1924]., Jena - Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-293 [294: printer's imprint] [295-296: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original pictorial tan boards printed in red, green, blue and black, top edge stained brown. First edition, first printing. Also published as ALIS. DIE NEUE DEUTSCHE KOLONIE. DAS ENDE VON VERSAILLES. TECHNISCHER ZUKUNFTSROMAN (Friedeberg: Iserverlag Dresler & Co., 1924). Revenge against France is the theme central to the plot of Lämmel's novel in which ancient Atlantis is discovered and claimed by Germany. "Inführ's hero is Peter Hertenberger, a young man from Styria whose 'peasant blood' and affinity to the 'soil' are combined with a talent for all things technical. This leads to a crisis in which his identity as a true German Austrian prevails, leading him to embark for Berlin in order to 'achieve something greater for the German Volk' as an inventor. In Berlin he meets Ria Wimpffen, the daughter of the president of a 'German-American Stars League' that advocates the strengthening of German elements in the United States. While crossing the Atlantic on the way to visit the United States, Hartenberger discovers the sunken island of Atlantis with the help of a 'nucleon spectrascope' he has invented. He immediately decides to offer the riches certain to be found on Atlantis to the German Reich in order to improve both its financial situation and its military strength. When the French try to hinder his excavation efforts, he destroys their fleet with a ray gun capable of melting iron, thereby ushering in what is explicitly referred to as 'a new epoch in world history.' With the help of the riches discovered by Hartenberger, Germany becomes so powerful that France -- fearing a further military catastrophe -- withdraws its troops from the Rhineland and writes off any further reparations payments. As a result of all these miraculous events, the German population is swept up in a 'wave of healthy nationalism,' leading to Hartenberger's election to a ten-year term as 'national dictator' by the German parliament. During the course of these years, he acts as a peacemaker in the ever-smoldering conflict between the 'swastika' and the 'Soviet star,' annuls all the conditions of the infamous Treaty of Versailles, carries out restoration of Germany's former colonies, and finally leads Austria 'home into the Reich.' After accomplishing all this, however, he does not rest on his laurels but prepares for even more 'immense tasks.' as the last line of the novel so allusively puts it." - Hermand. Fisher, Fantasy and Politics: Visions of the Future in the Weimar Republic, pp. 107; 109. Hermand, Old Dreams of a New Reich: Volkish Utopias and National Socialism, p. 99. Lexikon 2, p. 171. Bloch (2002) 1580. Nagl, p. 256. Boards lightly worn at spine ends, corner tips rubbed, a nearly fine copy. An uncommon book in a delicate binding seldom offered for sale. "The importance of the collection of chief manager Ole Olsen in Kopenhagen, which is described by this catalogue to lovers of art and science, consists chiefly in the variety and completeness with regard to the quantity of works of old industrial art. Only a few of the great collections of the old and new continent can rival this collection in extent, quality and variety of the industrial antiquities. Nearly all spheres of artistic work from the prehistorical period to the end of the eighteenth century are represented by characteristic, sometimes excellent works. This work brings to lovers of art and scholars of old industrial art, a catalogue such has not been published since the great catalogues of the Spitzer, Lanna and Morgan collections. Giving the descriptions in Danish, English and German, the possessor and the editor hope to render a service to the science of the history of art." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Very fine. The gilt pointille work is quite exceptional.Born in London in 1836, John Ramage served an apprenticeship with John Wright, then went to Paris, where he was able to work with the distinguished Marcellin Lortic (1822-1892), who opened his shop on the Rue St. Honoré in 1840. In 1860 Ramage purchased the binding business of Alexander Banks, Jr., in Edinburgh, then returned three years later to London, where he was in business at various locations into the 20th century. Though the range designs is broad, Ramage bindings are celebrated for their remarkably delicate, careful, and elaborate gilt work.Shakespeare's Sonnets is the title of a collection of 154 sonnets by William Shakespeare, which covers themes such as the passage of time, love, beauty and mortality. The first 126 sonnets are addressed to a young man; the last 28 to a woman.Shakespeare's Songs: Not surprisingly, Shakespeare alludes to or includes the text of well over one hundred songs in his works. Music was an integral part of Elizabethan life, as it is today. London publishers were constantly producing broadside ballads, madrigals, and consort pieces, and most educated people could read music and play a tune on a recorder, lute, or viola da gamba.

        The Stretton Street Affair.

London, Cassell and Co., 1924. First Edition. 8vo. This copy INSCRIBED by Le Queux to his niece Enid Gaby. Fine in publisher's burgundy cloth titled and decorated in black to spine and front board. Internally clean, very light foxing to page edges. Inscribed Le Queux is difficult to happen upon, and in a copy of this quality it is very scarce. 'The man who really deserves credit for helping develop the spy novel is William Le Queux' (Peter Haining). William Le Queux, seems to have done everything (or at least said he did); journalist, diplomat, explorer, early pilot, radio enthusiast and the author of a staggering 197 books. There is even the suggestion that Duckworth Drew, one of Le Queux's espionage heroes, was a direct inspiration for James Bond. HUBIN; Crime Fiction IV, p920.

The Recoil of Electrons from Scattered X-Rays", in Physical Review 23, 4, 1924, pp. 439-449

American Institute of Physics, Lancaster 1924 - FIRST EDITION OF THE 1924 PAPER IN WHICH COMPTON & HUBBARD FIRST CONFIRM & OBSERVE THE PARTICLE NATURE OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION (OR THE COMPTON EFFECT) USING WILSON'S NEW CLOUD CHAMBER METHOD. In a 1923 paper, Arthur Compton explained the Compton effect -- the increase in wavelength of X-rays scattered by collisions with electrons. The Compton effect, "the quantum theory of scattering suggested by Compton? assumes that each directed X-ray quantum is scattered by a single electron" (Compton and Hubbard, 1924, 449). Compton ends his 1923 paper by saying that 'the electrons which recoil in the process of the scattering of ordinary X-rays have not been observed'. In this 1924 paper, Compton and John Charles Hubbard, "in order to decide between Darwin's theory and the light-quantum theory? proposed to analyze the maximum energy of the recoil electrons and the relative number of observed recoil electrons to photoelectrons. They arrived at the following result: 'Both from the standpoint of the experimental evidence and from internal consistency of the theory we therefore seem forced to the conclusion that each quantum of scattered X-rays is emitted in a definite direction' (Rechenberg, Historical Development of Quantum Theory, 609; Compton and Hubbard, 1924, 449). "Compton and Hubbard's conclusion in favor of the light-quantum theory was based on counting the number of recoil electrons producing a track of given length in the cloud chamber" (Rechenberg, 609). Compton won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927 for his discovery of the Compton effect. ALSO INCLUDED: Millikan and Bowen, "Extreme Ultra-violet Spectra", pp. 1-35. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics, 8vo. Complete volume. [vii], 805, [5]. Ex-libris bearing the usual markings on the front flyleaf and pastedown; no other markings save for a tiny gilt stamp at the foot of the spine (see image). Tightly and very solidly bound in blue buckram; gilt-lettered at the spine. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition inside and out. [Attributes: First Edition]
