        Seducers in Equador

The Hogarth Press, London 1924 - Vita Sackville-West's 1924 novel Seducers in Ecuador is seldom seen thus, in near fine condition and still bearing the original dust jacket. One of 1,500 copies, this copy features a beautifully bright, square, and tight binding, with sharp corners, paper spine label fully intact, and only a hint of wear to the spine ends. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks and light, intermittent spotting. The red-stained top edge retains strong, unfaded color and differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms what the lovely binding already testifies – that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket is in two pieces, split along the rear hinge with the upper third of the spine missing and the balance of the spine toned. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Vita Sackville-West (1892-1962) was a poet, novelist, associate of the Bloomsbury Group, lover to Virginia Woolf, and the inspiration for Woolf's 1928 novel Orlando. As the daughter of a Baron and the wife of a politician (Harold George Nicholson, with whom she shared an open marriage), Vita's early life was spent split between the conventions of Edwardian society and diplomatic missions to locales such as Constantinople and Persia. These settings no doubt influenced her writing, which often dealt with a woman's place in society, both in her native Britain and, such as in the case of Seducers in Ecuador, abroad. In addition to the society novels she for which was most well-known, Vita was also an accomplished poet (twice winning the Hawthornden Prize, the only writer to do so), biographer, and one of the first to write a speculative science fiction novel about a hypothetical Nazi victory (Grand Canyon, 1942). A strange modernist novella centered on an English group on an Egyptian cruise, Seducers in Ecuador is the first of Vita Sackville-West's books published by the Hogarth Press and marks the beginning of their 17 year exclusive publishing relationship. As Hogarth Press was founded by Leonard and Virginia Woolf, this publication also coincides with the start of Sackville-West's relationship with Virginia Woolf, to whom this novel is dedicated. Though she was already an accomplished writer, it was Sackville-West who approached the Woolfs by asking them if they would like to publish "a longish short story. which no ordinary publisher would have looked at." (This from Leonard's later account. Some contemporary evidence suggests the Woolfs approached Sackville-West.) Through the preparations for publication Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf's relationship deepened through mutual admiration and cooperation. Sackville-West called the novel their "joint progeny" and dedicated it to her friend. Some critics suggest that Sackville-West even changed her style specifically to appeal to Woolf. If this is the case, she was certainly successful as Woolf would say in a 1924 letter, "I like the story very very much. it is the sort of thing I should like to write myself" and praised the "fantasticality of the details." It was around this time that their romantic relationship began which would continue through the 20s, and the impression that Vita Sackville-West made on Virginia Woolf was profound. Woolf wrote nearly 450 letters to Sackville-West, more than to any other correspondent save her sister, Vanessa Bell. In 1928 Woolf published Orlando, the title character inspired by Sackville-West, which was called by Sackville-West's son "the longest and most charming love letter in literature."         ULYSSES

Paris: Shakespeare, 1924. 2nd Printing. Original wraps. Printed for Sylvia Beach by Darantiere at Dijon, France, this was the first time the cover was white with blue letters. Fourth printing overall, after the first Shakespeare, second and third Egoist. This copy was kept by Beach in her Lending Library, but never circulated. Lending Library promotional card laid in. Tight, clean and square. Many pages are unopened. Protected by Mylar. Custom clamshell case, blue cloth with gilt rules and titling. Pages toned, as is usual due to low quality paper, minimal for this copy is the typical flaking. Conceived in sixteen years and written in seven, Ulysses is regarded as one of the greatest works of literature. The work's confiscation, burning and trial at an early stage pleased James Joyce, who hoped for notoriety. Though controversial, the work impressed his peers T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf and W.B. Yeats and was considered by his admirers to be superb, magical, and a work of genius. It became required reading for the intelligentsia and brought first fame to Joyce. Stunning, unrestored, largely unopened second Shakespeare printing. Slocum & Cahoon 17. Ellmann p. 499-532.

The "Union of Socialists-Revolutionaries Maximalists was a political party in the Russian Empire, a radical wing expelled from the Socialist-Revolutionary Party in 1906. The Union united agrarian terrorists, the 'Moscow Opposition' and other radical dissidents from the PSR in an independent party. The Maximalists officially split off from the PSR at its Second Congress in Imatra in 1906. Maximalists played a role in both the Revolution of 1905 and the Revolution of 1917. Many former SR Maximalists eventually joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolshevik)….Maximalists were so called because they demanded the full implementation of the 'maximum programme' in the expected revolution: full socialisation of the land, factories and all other means of production. The orthodox Socialist-Revolutionaries wanted to start with land reform but defer socialisation of other means of production. The Maximalists also rejected the PSR's version of a 'two-stage' revolution, a theory associated with V.M. Chernov. According to Chernov, the coming revolution in Russia would not be purely 'bourgeois-democratic' as the Social-Democrats claimed, but would include social and economic as well as political reforms. It would be a 'popular-democratic' revolution, and would transition into a full-blown 'labour-socialist' revolution later on. The Maximalists rejected this as Social-Democratic 'attentism' and argued that the coming Russian revolution would not be able to stop half-way; it was the two-stage theory, not Maximalism, that was unrealistic if it thought the toiling masses, once liberated, would content themselves with a bourgeois republic and gradual reforms." (Wikipedia, 2012) OCLC lists 9 copies. Publisher's typo on final page of No. 20/21: issue listed as "No. 20-25". Pages darkened but not fragile; some edgewear. Issue no. 24-26 worn with minor closed tears along gutter margin. Issue no. 8 outer wrappers detached but present. No 12/13 with small loss of paper and a few words. Overall, in Very Good Condition, a scarce complete run of this important journal. (RUS-11-37)

LO SPETTATORE ITALIANO, rivista letteraria dell'Italia nuova - 1924 - tutto il pubblicato - direttore GIUSEPPE BOTTAI, Roma, Industrie Grafiche Romane, 1924

      - 4 x 23,5, brossura. Pictorial Map of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields.

Johannesburg. Gold Producers Committee. 1924. Folded color lithographic pictorial map, 8 x 24 inches. The color map depicts, in a central position, the city of Johannesburg. Floating above the city is the text: "Johannesburg, the World's Premier Gold Mining City." In the extended environs surrounding the city 16 or more gold mines are identified. Text blocks connected with each mine provide the number of employees ("Europeans and Natives") and the value of the gold extracted in each of the mines to date. Excellent clean condition. The map depicts pictorially "the tableau exhibited by the Transvaal Chamber of Mines." Text in English and Afrikaans. Text on verso (English and Afrikaans) details unfolding events in a narrative titled: "Twenty-four Hours on a Witwatersrand Gold Mine." This is a highly uncommon pictorial map: there are no WorldCat listings for a map with this date, and just two for the more readily available map of 1932, which is an entirely different production, schematic rather than pictorial. Scarce, and in pristine condition. A valuable addition to libraries with holdings emphasizing the history of South African gold mining. Near fine condition.

Muir not only founded the Sierra Club, but was instrumental in the establishment of both Yosemite and Sequoia National Park. Though Muir is known chiefly as an American figure, he was born in Scotland - and came over as a boy when his family immigrated to the Midwest. Muir maintained an interest in spirituality and nature from his youth. Indeed, he explored the American wilderness extensively after he finished college, walking at one point over 1000 miles from Kentucky to Florida. Eventually he would settle in Northern California, where he would make his most significant impact, exploring the Sierras and Yosemite. "He knew the mountains and forests of the West as they are known only to one who has dwelt in loneliness among them, hardened his body and nourished his soul in their splendorous solitudes." (New York Times). Fine.

Collection of Photographs of War Atrocities in China

1924. (CHINA). Collection of Photographs of War Atrocities in China. [Canton and Shanghai], circa 1904-1924. Toned bromide and gelatin silver prints, unbound collection. $2500.Explicit collection of original browntone photographs taken during hostilities in China in the first two decades of the 20th century. Photographs are of the most graphic and horrible nature— a documentary photo archive of the anarchy that was China. In the wake of the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912, a power vacuum was created in China, with numerous warlords vying for power. These photographs document episodes within that struggle in the Nanjing area. Most of the photographs are of executions ordered at Shanghai by the “Nanking Warlord” Sun ChÂ’uan-fang. Sun, who was also known as the leader of the “League of Five Provinces,” commanded the northern provinces following the end of ChinaÂ’s imperial age. He defeated and killed the bandit leaders ChÂ’ang Wu, Liu Pa, and Hsu Shih Yi, at Huchuang, Lintsing, in January, 1924. Many photographs display the aftermath of the battle and the bodies of the executed bandits. SunÂ’s victory was short-lived, however, and he was overthrown in March 1927 by the Kuomintang- and Chinese Communist Party-led Northern Expedition of 1926-27. Most photographs with contemporary explanations on mount or on separate paper labels. Included in this collection are: 14 photographs were taken between 1900 and 1904. Accompanying them is a letter of provenance on State Department stationery indicating they came from the collection of Robert McWade, U.S. Consul to Canton from 1900-1904, via the U.S. Department of State. Department of State envelope included. The photographs are each 3 by 4 inches. Nine photographs of corpses, decapitations, flayings, and decapitated heads. Accompanying the photographs is a note saying that these pictures were enclosed with a letter dated April 6, 1927. The photographs are each 5 by 3 inches. One photograph, matted, 8 by 5-1/2 inches, showing the decapitated heads of three bandit leaders, One photograph, matted, 4 by 5-1/2 inches, showing the dead bodies of two of the bandit leaders, ChÂ’ang Wu and Liu Pa, dated January 15, 1924. One photograph, matted, 14-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches, showing the corpses of dozens of bandits who were killed in the battle against the three bandit leaders, also dated January 15, 1924. Some wear and fading to all photographs, with a few chips lost. Three photographs split. A unique and horrifying archive.

        Passage to India

1924. First Edition . FORSTER, E.M. A Passage to India. London: Edward Arnold, 1924. Octavo, original burgundy cloth. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $5800.First trade edition of E.M. Forster’s most famous novel, the last published in his lifetime, the copy of Bloomsbury group hostess and book collector Lady Ottoline Morrell, who frequently hosted Forster at her home, annotated by Morrell and bearing a signed gift inscription from her as well as a tipped-in photograph of Forster captioned by her.Forster's 1921 return trip to India ""had the effect of releasing what was to be judged his masterpiece, A Passage to India"" (DNB). Andre Gide praised Forster's novel, his last published in his lifetime, as ""a miracle of intelligence, tact, irony, prudence and ability"" (Connolly, The Modern Movement 45). David Lean's 1984 film adaptation earned 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. A ""Limited Edition"" of 200 copies was printed the same year, no priority established. With three pages of advertisements at rear; without extremely scarce dust jacket. Kirkpatrick A10. This copy belonged to Lady Ottoline Morrell, essentially the Grand Dame of the Bloomsbury group. Physically striking and exceptionally well-connected (her first cousin went on to become the Queen Mother), Morrell was the heart of the Bloomsbury group, bringing together its prominent writers and artists in her London and Oxfordshire houses. In turn, the members of the group treated her homes as social clubs, coming and going at all hours with many adopting the bisexual Morrell as a romantic partner as various points. Indeed, her lovers included Roger Fry, Augustus John, Dora Carrington, Axel Munthe, and Bertrand Russell. However, Morrell was easily bored by romantic matters and her greatest passion was always the arts. Though she was caricatured unsympathetically by many of her friends and lovers—including by Lawrence who is believed to have immortalized her as Lady Chatterley—Morrell nonetheless loved literature. She collected first editions throughout her life, reading them repeatedly and handling them roughly. ""Unlike many celebrity libraries, Ottoline's books bear all the marks of being read and re-read, some to the point of disintegration"" (The Guardian). Morrell was, in fact, responsible for introducing Forster to D.H. Lawrence, an important association for them both. For Forster, Ottaline Morrell was an inroads into the most exclusive circles, but she was also a friend. As far back as October 4, 1913, he wrote to her, ""Every one ought to go to India. There is a desert of purple stone and cold air in Rajputana where I caught some germ that will stop me from ever being ill again."" This copy bears a gift inscription signed by Morrell as ""O"" for Ottoline and reading, ""Philip from O, June 4th 1924."" It also has a laid-in original photograph of Forster reading a newspaper, captioned behind on the pastedown in Morrell's hand. Morrell has annotated the work by writing page references on the rear free endpaper and there is a bit of marginal pencil bracketing in the text. Bookseller ticket.A few tiny spots of soiling to interior, tape residue to front endpapers, some wear to cloth. An extremely good copy with an outstanding association.
