Only a few of the great collections of the old and new continent can rival this collection in extent, quality and variety of the industrial antiquities. Nearly all spheres of artistic work from the prehistorical period to the end of the eighteenth century are represented by characteristic, sometimes excellent works. This work brings to lovers of art and scholars of old industrial art, a catalogue such has not been published since the great catalogues of the Spitzer, Lanna and Morgan collections.         Songs and Sonnets of William Shakespeare

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1924. "Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day?" A Superb Arabesque Style Binding With A Fine Gilt Pointille Design by Ramage of London [RAMAGE, John, binder]. SHAKESPEARE, William. Songs and Sonnets of William Shakespeare. Edited by F.T. Palgrave. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1924. Small octavo (5 7/8 x 3 7/8 inches; 149 x 98 mm.). viii, 253, [1, imprint] pp. Bound ca. 1925 by Ramage of London (stamp-signed on front turn-in). Full purple crushed levant morocco, covers beautifully decorated with a central gilt-ruled 'star' shape design surrounded by an elaborate and very fine gilt pointille design in the 'Arabesque' style. Spine with five raised bands elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt ruled board edges, wide turn-ins with a double gilt ruled border enclosing four corner and two side decorations in elaborate gilt pointille, purple watered silk liners and end-leaves, all edges gilt. With the engraved bookplate of Helen Margaret Nimmo on the verso of the front endleaf. Very fine. The gilt pointille work is quite exceptional. Born in London in 1836, John Ramage served an apprenticeship with John Wright, then went to Paris, where he was able to work with the distinguished Marcellin Lortic (1822-1892), who opened his shop on the Rue St. Honoré in 1840. In 1860 Ramage purchased the binding business of Alexander Banks, Jr., in Edinburgh, then returned three years later to London, where he was in business at various locations into the 20th century. Though the range designs is broad, Ramage bindings are celebrated for their remarkably delicate, careful, and elaborate gilt work. Shakespeare's Sonnets is the title of a collection of 154 sonnets by William Shakespeare, which covers themes such as the passage of time, love, beauty and mortality. The first 126 sonnets are addressed to a young man; the last 28 to a woman. Shakespeare's Songs: Not surprisingly, Shakespeare alludes to or includes the text of well over one hundred songs in his works. Music was an integral part of Elizabethan life, as it is today. London publishers were constantly producing broadside ballads, madrigals, and consort pieces, and most educated people could read music and play a tune on a recorder, lute, or viola da gamba.

        The Stretton Street Affair.

London, Cassell and Co., 1924. First Edition. 8vo. This copy INSCRIBED by Le Queux to his niece Enid Gaby. Fine in publisher's burgundy cloth titled and decorated in black to spine and front board. Internally clean, very light foxing to page edges. Inscribed Le Queux is difficult to happen upon, and in a copy of this quality it is very scarce. 'The man who really deserves credit for helping develop the spy novel is William Le Queux' (Peter Haining). William Le Queux, seems to have done everything (or at least said he did); journalist, diplomat, explorer, early pilot, radio enthusiast and the author of a staggering 197 books. There is even the suggestion that Duckworth Drew, one of Le Queux's espionage heroes, was a direct inspiration for James Bond. HUBIN; Crime Fiction IV, p920.

The Recoil of Electrons from Scattered X-Rays", in Physical Review 23, 4, 1924, pp. 439-449

American Institute of Physics, Lancaster 1924 - FIRST EDITION OF THE 1924 PAPER IN WHICH COMPTON & HUBBARD FIRST CONFIRM & OBSERVE THE PARTICLE NATURE OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION (OR THE COMPTON EFFECT) USING WILSON'S NEW CLOUD CHAMBER METHOD. In a 1923 paper, Arthur Compton explained the Compton effect -- the increase in wavelength of X-rays scattered by collisions with electrons. The Compton effect, "the quantum theory of scattering suggested by Compton? assumes that each directed X-ray quantum is scattered by a single electron" (Compton and Hubbard, 1924, 449). Compton ends his 1923 paper by saying that 'the electrons which recoil in the process of the scattering of ordinary X-rays have not been observed'. In this 1924 paper, Compton and John Charles Hubbard, "in order to decide between Darwin's theory and the light-quantum theory? proposed to analyze the maximum energy of the recoil electrons and the relative number of observed recoil electrons to photoelectrons. They arrived at the following result: 'Both from the standpoint of the experimental evidence and from internal consistency of the theory we therefore seem forced to the conclusion that each quantum of scattered X-rays is emitted in a definite direction' (Rechenberg, Historical Development of Quantum Theory, 609; Compton and Hubbard, 1924, 449). "Compton and Hubbard's conclusion in favor of the light-quantum theory was based on counting the number of recoil electrons producing a track of given length in the cloud chamber" (Rechenberg, 609). Compton won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927 for his discovery of the Compton effect. ALSO INCLUDED: Millikan and Bowen, "Extreme Ultra-violet Spectra", pp. 1-35. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics, 8vo. Complete volume. [vii], 805, [5]. Ex-libris bearing the usual markings on the front flyleaf and pastedown; no other markings save for a tiny gilt stamp at the foot of the spine (see image). Tightly and very solidly bound in blue buckram; gilt-lettered at the spine. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition inside and out. [Attributes: First Edition]

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe.

Paris: Meynial, 1924. Barbier, George. Small quarto. 12pp., + (12)ff. colored plates. One of 600 copies. Art Deco legend George Barbier contributed fashion plates to several albums and almanacs starting in 1912 before finally starting his own publication in 1922 titled Falbalas et Fanfreluches. Each annual issue included an almanac for the year, a guest essay, and twelve brightly hand-colored pochoir plates. Not all of the plates are traditional fashion plates; Barbier chose to include many fantastical renderings of period and foreign costumes and folk dress, presented in his usual elegant style. Falbalas et Fanfreluches was issued from 1922 through 1926, making this the third of five total issues. This 1924 edition includes "Glorifions la Coquetterie" by Cécil Soral, as well as a color-illustrated title page and an additional black & white headpiece. Near fine, loose as issued in illustrated chemise, showing a modern woman standing in a shell à la Botticelli's Birth of Venus, and original glassine. (Colas 1026).

        Le Joaillier Léon Devos

Ets. Guy Onkelinx, Bruxelles 1924 - Small quarto. (40)pp. Illustrated with ten color plates of Art Deco jewelry design, and six allegorical color plates, a full-page black & white unattributed image, and a small vignette by American artist Lawrence Sterne Stevens. The jewelry designs by Devos, an important Belgian jeweler, are elegantly styled to the Art Deco aesthetic, and expertly rendered in the plates. The designs are divided into five sections by type of gem - diamonds, pearls, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds - and each section is prefaced by an illustration by Sterne Stevens of exotic foreign locales and beautiful women and men draped in jewels. Sterne Stevens was born in Michigan and worked as a cartoonist while taking night classes at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. By chance, Alphonse Mucha visited his former teacher at the school and was introduced to Sterne Stevens; with their encouragement, he moved to Belgium in 1910 to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Following the war, he returned to Belgium and worked as a designer and illustrator from 1924 to 1937 before returning to the States to work as a freelance illustrator. This trade catalogue, then, would have been one of his earliest works after he returned to Belgium. Bound in brown wrappers with decorative cord at the spine. The front is enhanced by an embossed design and printing in dark brown and light blue. Typed letter on the company stationary and signed by Devos laid in. The letter, which would accompany the catalogue, invites the recipient to visit the showroom at 63 rue de Namur where they could find "un assortiment vraiment unique." Fine.         Seducers in Equador

The Hogarth Press, London 1924 - Vita Sackville-West's 1924 novel Seducers in Ecuador is seldom seen thus, in near fine condition and still bearing the original dust jacket. One of 1,500 copies, this copy features a beautifully bright, square, and tight binding, with sharp corners, paper spine label fully intact, and only a hint of wear to the spine ends. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks and light, intermittent spotting. The red-stained top edge retains strong, unfaded color and differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms what the lovely binding already testifies – that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket is in two pieces, split along the rear hinge with the upper third of the spine missing and the balance of the spine toned. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Vita Sackville-West (1892-1962) was a poet, novelist, associate of the Bloomsbury Group, lover to Virginia Woolf, and the inspiration for Woolf's 1928 novel Orlando. As the daughter of a Baron and the wife of a politician (Harold George Nicholson, with whom she shared an open marriage), Vita's early life was spent split between the conventions of Edwardian society and diplomatic missions to locales such as Constantinople and Persia. These settings no doubt influenced her writing, which often dealt with a woman's place in society, both in her native Britain and, such as in the case of Seducers in Ecuador, abroad. In addition to the society novels she for which was most well-known, Vita was also an accomplished poet (twice winning the Hawthornden Prize, the only writer to do so), biographer, and one of the first to write a speculative science fiction novel about a hypothetical Nazi victory (Grand Canyon, 1942). A strange modernist novella centered on an English group on an Egyptian cruise, Seducers in Ecuador is the first of Vita Sackville-West's books published by the Hogarth Press and marks the beginning of their 17 year exclusive publishing relationship. As Hogarth Press was founded by Leonard and Virginia Woolf, this publication also coincides with the start of Sackville-West's relationship with Virginia Woolf, to whom this novel is dedicated. Though she was already an accomplished writer, it was Sackville-West who approached the Woolfs by asking them if they would like to publish "a longish short story. which no ordinary publisher would have looked at." (This from Leonard's later account. Some contemporary evidence suggests the Woolfs approached Sackville-West.) Through the preparations for publication Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf's relationship deepened through mutual admiration and cooperation. Sackville-West called the novel their "joint progeny" and dedicated it to her friend. Some critics suggest that Sackville-West even changed her style specifically to appeal to Woolf. If this is the case, she was certainly successful as Woolf would say in a 1924 letter, "I like the story very very much. it is the sort of thing I should like to write myself" and praised the "fantasticality of the details." It was around this time that their romantic relationship began which would continue through the 20s, and the impression that Vita Sackville-West made on Virginia Woolf was profound. Woolf wrote nearly 450 letters to Sackville-West, more than to any other correspondent save her sister, Vanessa Bell. In 1928 Woolf published Orlando, the title character inspired by Sackville-West, which was called by Sackville-West's son "the longest and most charming love letter in literature."         ULYSSES

Paris: Shakespeare, 1924. 2nd Printing. Original wraps. Printed for Sylvia Beach by Darantiere at Dijon, France, this was the first time the cover was white with blue letters. Fourth printing overall, after the first Shakespeare, second and third Egoist. This copy was kept by Beach in her Lending Library, but never circulated. Lending Library promotional card laid in. Tight, clean and square. Many pages are unopened. Protected by Mylar. Custom clamshell case, blue cloth with gilt rules and titling. Pages toned, as is usual due to low quality paper, minimal for this copy is the typical flaking. Conceived in sixteen years and written in seven, Ulysses is regarded as one of the greatest works of literature. The work's confiscation, burning and trial at an early stage pleased James Joyce, who hoped for notoriety. Though controversial, the work impressed his peers T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf and W.B. Yeats and was considered by his admirers to be superb, magical, and a work of genius. It became required reading for the intelligentsia and brought first fame to Joyce. Stunning, unrestored, largely unopened second Shakespeare printing. Slocum & Cahoon 17. Ellmann p. 499-532.
