Putnam's Sons 1924 - Scarce limited "Author's Autograph Edition" of 110 numbered and signed copies with an original signed woodcut, this being #6 and a presentation copy from Kent to his "dear friend" and publisher, George Putnam, expressing his "gratitude - too often not expressed - that I must forever feel for him - and do" and signed again, "Affectionately, / Rockwell"; George Palmer Putnam, an author & explorer, was later the discoverer of an at-the-time unknown aviatrix, Amelia Earhart, whom he sponsored on her first transatlantic flight & later married; he was also, of course, the then-current head of the longtime Putnam publishing family; printed at the Knickerbocker Press on heavy-stock paper, rough-cut to the bottom and foredges, there is a full-page woodcut unique to this edition - in addition to the signed one - appearing after the Introduction, and the illustrated endpapers are not reproduced in subsequent editions (a map of Tierra del Fuego appears instead); a Very Good copy in faux-vellum-backed blue papered boards with panel & spine title labels, minor shelf & edge wear to the boards with a little quiet soiling (primarily along spine) and a small half-inch circular stain mid-spine, light bump to spine top/rear panel, 2 tiny puncture holes along front gutter, very slight gap between signatures at pages 64-5, else hinges & binding tight, pages unmarked & an overall excellent example of this beautifully produced and printed Rockwell Kent classic, with truly one-of-a-kind associations; 4to; xvi + 184pp illus + signed bound-in woodcut.       London: John Lane Company/The Bodley Head, 1924. This is a very good hardcover copy in the original binding: brown paper-covered boards and cream cloth spine with black leather spine label, titled in gilt. Very clean inside and out. A few previous owner marks, one an interesting circular handstamp on the front pastedown identifying it as belonging to the De Forests at 640 Madison Avenue. Perhaps the family of Lockwood De Forest. His siblings were prominent in the art worlds of the late 19th and early 20th century. One became a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum, another was an art historian, and both lived in New York. The other mark is a neat but not legible handstamp, a name in script, that appears on the backs of several plates. Also a number on the spine which was covered with a tiny white square of paper. No other marks, and not an x-library copy, but a privately owned copy. Some expert conservation on the inner hinges, now virtually invisible. 79 illustrations in color and black & white. 12" high X 9" wide, 268 pages. A beautiful copy of this scarce classic. .         PRICE OF FREEDOM. Speeches and Addresses

New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1924 - First Edition, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY CALVIN COOLIDGE IN HIS HAND. With a photographic frontispiece of President Coolidge and some interesting ephemeral materials included in a separate sleeve. 8vo, publisher’s original dark blue cloth, the spine and upper cover lettered in gilt. [viii], 420 pp. A fine, bright and clean copy, with very little evidence of age. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION, RARE THUS. Coolidge speaks on a variety of subjects. The book is ably written and articulate in its presentation and leads the reader to a new appreciation of a man often relegated to the obscure because of his quietude. Especially noteworthy in the present day is to read Coolidge’s own thinking about the methodology of the Presidency, its struggles with the other branches of government and the absolute necessity for the President to bear the burden of that struggle in order to protect in an absolute way, the rights and privileges of the executive, and thus its equality with the other branches. All of this from a man who came from a simple country environment, from local people and through service in both the legislative and legal bodies to his place in the executive branch. Chapters include historical, political, biographical and legal reflections on a variety of subjects. There is a fine reflection on Theodore Roosevelt, a discussion of law and order, a consideration of the banks and people, an interesting examination of thought as the master of things, writings on the power of moral law, the American heritage from Alexander Hamilton, the place of Lincoln, the meaning of democracy, the price of freedom and the limitations of the law among many other writings included in this volume.
