        THE NINE UNKNOWN

The first novel in Jimgrim series to be published as a book. "The Nine Unknown" first appeared as a five-part serial in ADVENTURE, 30 March 1923 -- 30 April 1930. Adventurer James Schuyler Grimm, an American who carried a commission in the British army, is one Mundy's greatest heroes. He first appeared in "The Adventure at El Kerak" in ADVENTURE, 10 December 1921 (published with sequel "Under the Dome of the Rock" in book form as JIMGRIM AND ALLAH'S PEACE, 1933). Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1208. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 145. Reginald 10518. Grant, p. 200.         Mutiny of the Bounty and Story of Pitcairn Island 1790-1894

Auckland, New Zealand: Dawson Printing Company, 1924. Later printing. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 303pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's brown decorative boards. Spine cocked and rubbing to the corners. Otherwise a clean copy. Stated eighth printing. However, a unique copy, as it is SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper by Floyd H. McCoy, a direct descendant of WIlliam McCoy, one of the original mutineers. "To Dr. Southworth from Floyd H. McCoy. Pitcairn Island. 4th Generation of William McCoy of H. M. S. Bounty 25/6/37." This book was certainly signed on Pitcairn, as Dr. Rufus Southworth took a medical mission to Pitcairn in 1937 and stayed for half a year, writing about the experience in his book, A DOCTOR'S LETTERS FROM PITCAIRN 1937. McCoy was known for his large book collection on the island, and seems to have been something of an amateur archivist and historian for the Pitcairn community. While an otherwise remarkable book, made much more interesting with the Bounty association, and having been presented and signed on the little, remote island.

        When We Were Very Young

London: Methuen & Co.,, 1924. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignettes to the covers, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. Contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper. Light rubbing to extremities, foxing to endpapers; a very good copy in the jacket with loss to foot of front panel, slight nicks to extremities, soiling to front cover and verso. First edition, first impression. The first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286).

        HARLEM MASONIC RECORDS, 1924-1929

      - HARLEM MASONIC RECORDS, 1924-1927. Page after page of petitions for membership to Medina Temple #19 (approx. 150 - 200pp.). Very useful for research on Harlem ancestors in the migration period. Has names, addresses, occupations, etc. of those applying for membership in the masons. An excellent source of primary data on organization-minded Harlem residents during the beginning of the Harlem Renaissance. It was these types of people who lead to the glory days of Harlem in the following two decades. These documents are unusual and rare since masonic documents are almost never available to the public. Not likely to be found elsewhere. VG (no covers, leaves bound together with a metal clip. A few pages curled and slightly chipped but in general readable and intact).

LO SPETTATORE ITALIANO. Rivista letteraria dell'Italia Nuova. Direttori: Giuseppe Bottai - Arnaldo Frateili.

Industrie Grafiche Romane, 1924. In-8, brossura orig.

Preliminary report on our journey in Persia during the winter season 1924-25.

The Anglo-Persian Oil Company Limited,, London - (33 x 21 cm), 75, [vii] pp. 8 tipped-in photographic plates, 30 diagrams and sketch illustrations, 2 large folding maps (1 coloured), map pocket with 2 very large linen-backed maps, 7 folding maps ( 5 coloured), 1 index sheet (this toned with 2 small holes 91 marginal), a duplicate folding map has been tipped-in to rear paste down, original green morocco-style binding lettered in gilt, a fine copy. Printed circa 1926.No copies at Copac. . EXTREMELY RARE. A PRIVATELY PRINTED CONFIDENTIAL REPORT FOR THE DIRECTORS OF THE ANGLO-PERSIAN OIL COMPANY. The purpose of the expedition was to follow up a similar journey made the previous year, resolve problems arising from that journey, and to make a closer study of the general tectonics in the Iranian ranges and the rocks forming them together with a geological investigation of the Arab Gulf. The report is exclusively geological in nature. It is possible the most important achievement of De Bockh, in which of his six recommendations of sites for immediate action, four proved ultimately to be major discoveries. The Hungarian geologist Hugo de Bockh (1884-1931) was appointed geological advisor to the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) in 1923 and carried out detailed surveys of Persia, the Gulf and Mesopotamia. He also did surveys in South America as the British company’s exploratory interests had become very widespread. A pioneering field work geologist, his activities did not give him much time for writing and confidential nature of many of his reports mean that he is possibly not as well known as he deserves to be. Before 1922, the APOC "seems to have been concerned with random opportunities brought to its attention rather than the licence of the territories which they name on the Persian Gulf Littoral." The Colonial Office wrote that it was not practical for the company to be granted a single exclusive licence over all the territories of the former Ottoman Empire, and that political conditions prevented licenses from Muscat, the Trucial States and Saudi Arabia, but negotiations were authorised with the Sheikhs of Kuwait and Bahrain under the aegis of the Political Resident. The provenance of this copy is from Lord Cadman of Silverdale 1877-1941 (armourial plate verso front cover), a British mining engineer and petroleum technologist who became chairman of AOPC. A Mr. Davis (letter in secretarial hand from Lord Cadman sending him this book) attached on front fly leaf. Excerpts from the report: "One may conclude that the islands of the Persian Gulf do not represent the exposed portions of a continuous formation but rather if the sea-floor were elevated we should find that the Hormuz series would be confined to comparatively few isolated hilly patches". The area occupied by the Mesopotamian S.W. Persian geosyncline outlined by Dr. Hugo de Bockh in the preliminary report may be divided into the following tectonic units: 1- The Western continental region. 2- The Zone of autochthonous folding. 3- The Zone of Mappes. On the Arabian borderland the report mentions that " In Jabal Sanamold rocks outcrop which may be of a corresponding age to the Hormus series. The country of the south-east of Jabal Sanam is little known. Near Kuwait the Kuwait series has not been studied. The Oman series is younger and less metamorphosed. It consists of dark blue, almost black, then pale-grey and reddish-tinged limestone, which are sometimes strongly crushed." He mentions in his first work on the geology of the Persian Gulf that "at Al Busa and Hamairan, in the "Hormuz inlier" similar rocks to Oman rocks occur. But the rocks in these localities are of Cambrian age". (pp.6-7). Size: Folio [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

Voyaging Southward from the Strait of Magellan (AUTHOR'S AUTOGRAPH EDITION)

New York & London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1924 Scarce limited "Author's Autograph Edition" of 110 numbered and signed copies with an original signed woodcut, this being #6 and a presentation copy from Kent to his "dear friend" and publisher, George Putnam, expressing his "gratitude - too often not expressed - that I must forever feel for him - and do" and signed again, "Affectionately, / Rockwell"; George Palmer Putnam, an author & explorer, was later the discoverer of an at-the-time unknown aviatrix, Amelia Earhart, whom he sponsored on her first transatlantic flight & later married; he was also, of course, the then-current head of the longtime Putnam publishing family; printed at the Knickerbocker Press on heavy-stock paper, rough-cut to the bottom and foredges, there is a full-page woodcut unique to this edition - in addition to the signed one - appearing after the Introduction, and the illustrated endpapers are not reproduced in subsequent editions (a map of Tierra del Fuego appears instead); a Very Good copy in faux-vellum-backed blue papered boards with panel & spine title labels, minor shelf & edge wear to the boards with a little quiet soiling (primarily along spine) and a small half-inch circular stain mid-spine, light bump to spine top/rear panel, 2 tiny puncture holes along front gutter, very slight gap between signatures at pages 64-5, else hinges & binding tight, pages unmarked & an overall excellent example of this beautifully produced and printed Rockwell Kent classic, with truly one-of-a-kind associations; 4to; xvi + 184pp illus + signed bound-in woodcut.. Signed by Author. First Edition / Limited. Hard Cover.

The whole housed in a good, sturdy folder (decorative paper over boards), likely missing a slipcase. Book is very gently bumped at tail of spine, with coordinating chips (tiny) in the glassine -- very near fine. Suite of plates -- also near fine, with a closed tear along bottom edge of the cardstock portfolio (plates themselves are fine). Folder is a little scuffed and worn, but it's done a remarkable job of protecting this lavish limited edition. Nice. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

OM: THE SECRET OF AHBOR VALLEY ..

Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company Publishers, [1924].. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-392, original green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by Mundy dated January 1926 on the front free endpaper. First published as a six-part serial in ADVENTURE, 10 October -- 30 November 1924. "An excellent Oriental novel, with fairly good characterizations, an ingenious plot, and most of all a long, fascinating account of the life of an actor on the native Indian stage." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1209. Mundy's "skill in handling robust and fast-paced narrative sustains his readability even in extreme circumstances, but it is unfortunately the case that the supernatural intrusions usually weaken his stories when they are not merely peripheral ... only OM really manages to fuse its occult materials with the other elements of its plot in a seamless and interesting fashion." - Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 3-258. "There can be little doubt that OM is the most serious novel Mundy wrote and probably his most successful work of art." - Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature III, pp. 1142-45. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 162. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 145. Reginald 10520. Grant, p. 202. A clean, bright, very good copy in good pictorial dust jacket with wear along top and bottom edges, chips from spine ends, several closed tears at edges, and tape mends, internal except for one at the lower spine end and another along the front flap fold.
