Thomas Seltzer/ Duckworth, 1924 - 1928., London/ New York: - First U.S. edition of the first volume and first editions of the rest; all four volumes in the scarce to rare dust jackets. Ford's tetralogy set during WWI, mainly in England and on the western front, where Ford himself served as an officer in the Welch Regiment. John N. Gray hailed PARADE'S END as "possibly the greatest 20th-century novel in English" and Mary Gordon labeled it as "quite simply, the best fictional treatment of war in the history of the novel." Basis for the 2012 BBC / HBO mini-series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rebecca Hall. SOME DO NOT (NY: 1924), in black paper boards over half orange cloth lettered in black on spine. Orange cloth inexplicably but evenly shadowed on each side (the spine is fine) and pages a little darkened, otherwise very good to near fine in good to very good dust jacket with few skinned areas and marginal chipping affecting only the tips of letters at head of spine. NO MORE PARADES (London: 1925), in green cloth boards with gilt-lettered spine. A MAN COULD STAND UP (London: 1925), in green cloth boards with gilt-lettered spine. Foxing to page edges and title page, otherwise bright and fine in fine, lightly soiled dust jacket. LAST POST (London: 1928), in green cloth boards with gilt-lettered spine. Pastedowns and hinges darkened, spine ends just a touch frayed, otherwise near fine in good to about very good dust jacket showing light soiling, tanning to spine, small hole in front flap fold and chipping to spine ends that is not affecting any lettering. A remarkable set, nearly impossible to reassemble, especially in dust jackets. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

"7" added in manuscript to title below "Eduard Steuermann." Publisher's catalogue "Arnold Schönbergs Werke in der Universal-Edition" to verso of lower wrapper. First Edition, second issue in this form. Rufer (Engl.) p. 36-37. Ringer p. 313. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 11-12. "The second issue of the first edition can be identified by two marginal details: First, on p. 40, the printer's siglum 'Weag' (abbreviation for Waldheim-Eberle A.G.) is omitted; second, on the verso of lower wrapper... 'Nr. 35 V 1923' [printed to the lower margin] has been reduced to 'Nr. 35.'" Website of the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna Eduard Steuermann (1892-1964), pianist and composer, was one of the central figures in Schoenberg's circle. He played the piano part in several first performances of Schoenberg's works, including Pierrot Lunaire and the Piano Concerto. From 1938 on he lived in the United States. A "drama with music" in one act to a libretto by the composer, Die glückliche Hand [The Hand of Fate] was first performed at the Volksoper in Vienna on October 14, 1924, with Fritz Stiedry conducting. "This work was begun in 1910, but much of the music, including the first and last of the four scenes, was not composed until 1912-13. Like its companion piece, Erwartung, it contains only one singing character. It is shorter, lasting only 20 minutes or so, but the action is far more complex, involving two mimed roles, a chorus and elaborate scenic effects synchronized with constantly changing coloured lighting. This last feature was also used by Kandinsky in Der gelbe Klang, but Schoenberg did not know about it at the time. His conception coincides with his own most intense period of activity as a painter." O.W. Neighbour in Grove online.

        The Show-Off

Little, Brown and Co. Boston 1924 - First Edition. Charles Buckles Falls dustjacket art. Based on the play by George Kelly. "Aubrey Piper was a clerk in a railroad office, earning thirty-two dollars a week, but to hear him talk you'd have thought he was head of the freight department. He wore white vests and patent-leather shoes, wing collars and bow ties, and a flower in his button-hole, and strutted, and frequently looked in the mirror. He believed the only way for a fellow to get along was to try to make an impression." A very successful Broadway comedy that made George Kelly's career. Basis for three films; a 1926 adaptation featuring Louise Brooks and Ford Sterling; a 1934 Charles Reisner directed feature re-scripted by Herman J. Mankiewicz and featuring Spencer Tracy; and a 1946 Harry Beaumont directed film with Red Skelton and Marilyn Maxwell. Very uncommon as a true first edition, and not the more oft found Grosset and Dunlap printing. Near Fine but for contemporary owner's address stamp at front pastedown, in Very Good dustjacket, chipped at spine ends and flap corners, foxing and soiling to panels.         Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

        Ragtime. a novel.

London: Brentano's Ltd., 1924 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, title gilt to spine and upper board, blue top-stain. With the dust jacket. Title page with Colonial Edition overstamp, free endpapers browned, very good in slightly over-sized jacket, publisher's reprice label removed from the spine. First edition, published the following year in the US under the title The Virgin Flame. "Loyal, sensitive young musician" Michael Cardovan struggles to wrest the soul of America from the toils of Jazz. Plot includes a dramatic trial with a jury of "twelve ragtime men and true." On the jacket, in silhouette, a flapper persuades her young man to turn towards the saxophone of modernity, while he reaches out for the classical colonnades of the Academy. Pascal is best known as a screen-writer, sometime president of the Screen Writer's Guild, worked on the Rathbone and Bruce Hound and John Ford's Kipling adaptation Wee Willie Winkie with Shirley Temple. Book collector Alec Hamilton's copy, with his signature ink-stamp to the front free-endpaper. Decidedly uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition]
