      BOUND FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S 1924 PAPER ON THE PHYSICS OF RADIOMETERS; EINSTEIN'S TRANSLATION OF BOSE'S SECOND PAPER ON THE BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE (WITH UNTITLED ADDENDUM BY EINSTEIN); & WENTZEL'S SECOND PROPHETIC PAPER ANTICIPATING FEYNMAN'S PATH INTEGRAL APPROACH TO QUANTUM MECHANICS. This volume bears the ownership stamp of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. The Einstein authored paper, Zur Theorie der Radiometerkräfte [On the Theory of Radiometric Forces] presents Einstein's theory on the cause of radiometric forces (the physics of radiometers). His paper finds that radiometric forces act also on surfaces normal to the temperature gradient, in other words, also on horizontal surfaces. Weil 139, 143a. ALSO INCLUDED: "Zur Quantentheorie des Röntgenbremsspektr ums" by Gregor Wentzel. "Unbeknownst to Feynmann, Wiener, or Dirac, Wentzel had anticipated several of the most important features of the path integral formulation in two 1924 papers resolving differences between classical wave interference and the quantum nature of spectral lines. Published even before Heisenberg's quantum mechanics formulation, these papers included concepts such as the interpretation of a virtual path as a phase, the interference of phase paths, and the interpretation of the magnitude of the interference as a transition probability" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection, 372). Wentzel's vision was not vague, and he provides "a precise mathematical structure that closely matches Feynman's later findings" (Antoci, Wentzel's Path Integrals, 1). ALSO INCLUDED: "Wärmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie" is Einstein's translation of Bose's second paper on the Bose-Einstein Condensate. Bose's first paper, "Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese" was a seminal paper in the history of quantum mechanics (and one which Einstein also translated for Bose). Planck's Law and Light Quantum Hypothesis represented the "discovery of new statistical counting rules for light quanta and a new derivation of Planck's radiation law. This second Bose paper specifically addresses the emission/absorption of electromagnetic radiation by matter. Einstein added an untitled addendum that he did not yet completely agree with the author's findings. CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Vieweg und Springer. Large 8vo. (9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm). Hund "was a German physicist from Karlsruhe known for his work on atoms and molecules. Hund worked with such prestigious physicists as Schrödinger, Dirac, Heisenberg, Max Born, and Walter Bothe. He published more than 250 papers and essays in total. Hund made pivotal contributions to quantum theory - especially concerning the structure of the atom and of molecular spectra" (Wikipedia). Very slight ghosting at the spine from the removal of a spine label. Regardless, a handsome volume solidly and tightly bound in black cloth over marbled paper boards; slight rubbing at the edges. First edition, first issue, with the price of 3/6 on dustwrapper spine. A collection of Ukridge short stories, previously published separately in The Strand [UK] and Cosmopolitan magazine [US]. The dedication to Bill Townend, Wodehouse's old schoolfriend and lifelong correspondent, reads: 'Dedicated with esteem and gratitude to Old Bill Townend, my friend from boyhood's days who first introduced me to Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge'. It was Townend who told Wodehouse about the adventures of a friend of his on a chicken farm: the result was the first appearance of Ukridge in Wodehouse's first comic novel, Love Among The Chickens [see item xx]. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single rule to boards with pictorial motifs, twin rule to turn-ins, floral endpapers, gilt edges. With black and white illustrations. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. The first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286).

First and only edition of a Catholic devotional book on the life of Christ (in 5 numbered parts), the works of the Apostles, saints' lives, and religious emblems, perhaps the most richly illustrated woodcut book of the 17th century, with almost 700 woodcuts by Van Sichem, when one includes the 7 large ornamental woodcuts with putti, beasts, insects and flowers. Van Sichem may also have cut the numerous woodcut decorated initials with biblical figures, appearing mostly in the works of the Apostles. The book's title may have been influenced by an otherwise unrelated work published in the previous year, Den schat der zielen , an unillustrated translation of a work apparently first written in Catalan by Miguel Comalada, which saw later editions as well. The present work is built entirely around Van Sichem's extraordinary woodcuts. Christoffel van Sichem (ca. 1581-1658), the second and most important of four artists of that name, was one of the greatest woodblock cutters of the Dutch golden age. With owner's signature on endleaf. With the outer edge of the woodcut on the "Bosch der eremyten" title-page slightly shaved, a few mostly marginal tears, the largest in the gutter margin of 1 leaf repaired, slightly affecting the border, and a smaller one slightly affecting 1 woodcut, and a few leaves somewhat thumbed, smudged or spotted, but still generally in good condition. A famous and popular Catholic devotional work, with nearly 700 Van Sichem woodcuts.

An excellent copy. With black and white illustrations. First edition, first impression. The first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. Sir Catchick Paul Chater amassed a large collection of historical pictures and engravings relating to China which he gifted to the colony. The Chater Collection was the subject of a work by its curator, James Orange, in 1924, at which time the collection stood at 430 items. Its backbone was the collection of Wyndham Law of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, and included oil paintings, watercolours, sketches, prints and photographs, most of which are based on landscape scenes of the South China trading ports in the 18th and 19th centuries, and of British activities in China.. The Chater Collection was dispersed and largely destroyed during the Japanese occupation, and only 94 pieces (now an important part of the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art) are known to have survived (Wikipedia). This period saw the rise of expressionist drama and art; also the rise of Nazi inspired art The artist Hubert Schöllgen (1897-1978) was a German painter and designer. Schöllgen initially studied at the AK Dusseldorf. Later he moved to Berlin to study with Emil Orlik and Thorn-Prikker. He then worked mainly as a painter and graphic artist in Dusseldorf and Essen. The induction is by Hanns Johst (1890 ? 1978) a German playright, who wrote two plays illustrated in this album #5 Propheten and #6 Der König. After WWI, His early art is influenced by expressionism e.g., Der Anfang (1917), Der König (1920). In 1935, Johst became the President of the Reichsschrifttumskammer and of the Deutsche Akademie für Dichtung, for Nazi writers. Later, he became the Nazi Poet Laureat. The other woodcuts depict scenes from the following new dramas: Der Findling by Ernst Barlach (1870 ? 1938). Barlach was a German expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer. During the rise of the Nazis, most of his work was confiscated as degenerate art. Die Füche Gottes by Otto Brües (1897?1967). After combat in WWI, Brües was a newspaperman who wrote dramas on patriotic themes. In December 1942 he received the Rheinische literary prize for writing ?species-appropriate? German literature. Kreuzzug (1924) by ?Dietzenschmidt.? Born as Anton Franz Schmid (1893 -1955), he always referred to himself as Dietzenschmidt, Schmid was a German dramatist who attempted to revive religious themes in drama. Totentanz by Gottfried Haaß-Berkow, (1888-1957). German playwright In 1912, he was a teacher at the drama school of Max Reinhardt in Berlin. During this time he met Rudolf Steiner who became a lifelong influence. Totentanz was created with his brother Schwager Gümbel-Seiling und Manfred Hausmann. Der Tellspiel der Schweizer Bauren by Franz Johannes Weinrich (1897-1978). Weinrich o was a German writer and poet who was influenced by ancient mystery plays. After WWI he met Karl Gabriel Pfeil and became a member of the expressionist writers and artists circle of des Weißen Reiters. Der Wähter Unter Dem Galgen (1920). Exemplaren von Knorr & Hirth in Ganzpergament gebunden mit der im Schuber eingelassenen Kupferplatte. - Im Druckvermerk vom Künstler signiert. - Der Schuber etwas fleckig und etwas stramm, sonst sehr gutes Exemplar auf unbeschnittenem Zerkall-Bütten. Vorblatt mit handsignierter Widmung des Herausgebers F. Schultz auf Vorsatz. Gesetzt aus der Breitkopf-Fraktur. Gedruckt bei Klingspor, Offenbach, auf Einhorn-Bütten. E.R.
