Founded in 1924, the Gesellschaft für die Jüdische Familien-Forschung ("Society for Jewish Family Research") began publishing its newsletter to connect Jewish genealogists and create a forum for their research. Its editor, the ophthalmologist Arthur Czellitzer (1871-1943) , claimed that the understanding of familial lineage is particularly important for the Jewish people. Without their own country or language, knowledge of family history would bring the Jews closer to their original roots, even if they had distanced themselves from the religious rituals of their ancestors. The work and publications of the Society was cut short by the Nazis who, tragically and ironically, used the research of the organization and the scholarship it had inspired, to identify, persecute and murder the Jews of Germany. Czellitzer himself was murdered in the death camp of Sobibor. SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Germany -- Genealogy -- Periodicals. OCLC lists 24 holdings worldwide. Issue 50 is missing the bottom part of last two pages. A few issues (33, 46, 47, and 50) are toning and a bit fragile, with covers sometimes detached. On the whole at least 35 of the issues are in unusually good condition with little to no toning and very little wear. Overall very good- condition.         DIE NEUE KOLONIE. ROMAN

Jena: Granula-Verlag, [1924].. Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-293 [294: printer's imprint] [295-296: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original pictorial tan boards printed in red, green, blue and black, top edge stained brown. First edition, first printing. Also published as ALIS. DIE NEUE DEUTSCHE KOLONIE. DAS ENDE VON VERSAILLES. TECHNISCHER ZUKUNFTSROMAN (Friedeberg: Iserverlag Dresler & Co., 1924). Revenge against France is the theme central to the plot of Lämmel's novel in which ancient Atlantis is discovered and claimed by Germany. "Inführ's hero is Peter Hertenberger, a young man from Styria whose 'peasant blood' and affinity to the 'soil' are combined with a talent for all things technical. This leads to a crisis in which his identity as a true German Austrian prevails, leading him to embark for Berlin in order to 'achieve something greater for the German Volk' as an inventor. In Berlin he meets Ria Wimpffen, the daughter of the president of a 'German-American Stars League' that advocates the strengthening of German elements in the United States. While crossing the Atlantic on the way to visit the United States, Hartenberger discovers the sunken island of Atlantis with the help of a 'nucleon spectrascope' he has invented. He immediately decides to offer the riches certain to be found on Atlantis to the German Reich in order to improve both its financial situation and its military strength. When the French try to hinder his excavation efforts, he destroys their fleet with a ray gun capable of melting iron, thereby ushering in what is explicitly referred to as 'a new epoch in world history.' With the help of the riches discovered by Hartenberger, Germany becomes so powerful that France -- fearing a further military catastrophe -- withdraws its troops from the Rhineland and writes off any further reparations payments. As a result of all these miraculous events, the German population is swept up in a 'wave of healthy nationalism,' leading to Hartenberger's election to a ten-year term as 'national dictator' by the German parliament. During the course of these years, he acts as a peacemaker in the ever-smoldering conflict between the 'swastika' and the 'Soviet star,' annuls all the conditions of the infamous Treaty of Versailles, carries out restoration of Germany's former colonies, and finally leads Austria 'home into the Reich.' After accomplishing all this, however, he does not rest on his laurels but prepares for even more 'immense tasks.' as the last line of the novel so allusively puts it." - Hermand. Fisher, Fantasy and Politics: Visions of the Future in the Weimar Republic, pp. 107; 109. Hermand, Old Dreams of a New Reich: Volkish Utopias and National Socialism, p. 99. Lexikon 2, p. 171. Bloch (2002) 1580. Nagl, p. 256. Boards lightly worn at spine ends, corner tips rubbed, a nearly fine copy. An uncommon book in a delicate binding seldom offered for sale. (#142324)

OM: THE SECRET OF AHBOR VALLEY ..

Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company Publishers, [1924].. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-392, original green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by Mundy dated January 1926 on the front free endpaper. First published as a six-part serial in ADVENTURE, 10 October -- 30 November 1924. "An excellent Oriental novel, with fairly good characterizations, an ingenious plot, and most of all a long, fascinating account of the life of an actor on the native Indian stage." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1209. Mundy's "skill in handling robust and fast-paced narrative sustains his readability even in extreme circumstances, but it is unfortunately the case that the supernatural intrusions usually weaken his stories when they are not merely peripheral ... only OM really manages to fuse its occult materials with the other elements of its plot in a seamless and interesting fashion." - Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 3-258. "There can be little doubt that OM is the most serious novel Mundy wrote and probably his most successful work of art." - Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature III, pp. 1142-45. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 162. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 145. Reginald 10520. Grant, p. 202. A clean, bright, very good copy in good pictorial dust jacket with wear along top and bottom edges, chips from spine ends, several closed tears at edges, and tape mends, internal except for one at the lower spine end and another along the front flap fold.         Mutiny of the Bounty and Story of Pitcairn Island 1790-1894

Auckland, New Zealand: Dawson Printing Company, 1924. Later printing. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 303pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's brown decorative boards. Spine cocked and rubbing to the corners. Otherwise a clean copy. Stated eighth printing. However, a unique copy, as it is SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper by Floyd H. McCoy, a direct descendant of WIlliam McCoy, one of the original mutineers. "To Dr. Southworth from Floyd H. McCoy. Pitcairn Island. 4th Generation of William McCoy of H. M. S. Bounty 25/6/37." This book was certainly signed on Pitcairn, as Dr. Rufus Southworth took a medical mission to Pitcairn in 1937 and stayed for half a year, writing about the experience in his book, A DOCTOR'S LETTERS FROM PITCAIRN 1937. McCoy was known for his large book collection on the island, and seems to have been something of an amateur archivist and historian for the Pitcairn community. While an otherwise remarkable book, made much more interesting with the Bounty association, and having been presented and signed on the little, remote island.

        When We Were Very Young

London: Methuen & Co.,, 1924. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignettes to the covers, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. Contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper. Light rubbing to extremities, foxing to endpapers; a very good copy in the jacket with loss to foot of front panel, slight nicks to extremities, soiling to front cover and verso. First edition, first impression. The first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286).

LO SPETTATORE ITALIANO. Rivista letteraria dell'Italia Nuova. Direttori: Giuseppe Bottai - Arnaldo Frateili.

Industrie Grafiche Romane, 1924. In-8, brossura orig.

- Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

Voyaging Southward from the Strait of Magellan (AUTHOR'S AUTOGRAPH EDITION)

New York & London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1924 Scarce limited "Author's Autograph Edition" of 110 numbered and signed copies with an original signed woodcut, this being #6 and a presentation copy from Kent to his "dear friend" and publisher, George Putnam, expressing his "gratitude - too often not expressed - that I must forever feel for him - and do" and signed again, "Affectionately, / Rockwell"; George Palmer Putnam, an author & explorer, was later the discoverer of an at-the-time unknown aviatrix, Amelia Earhart, whom he sponsored on her first transatlantic flight & later married; he was also, of course, the then-current head of the longtime Putnam publishing family; printed at the Knickerbocker Press on heavy-stock paper, rough-cut to the bottom and foredges, there is a full-page woodcut unique to this edition - in addition to the signed one - appearing after the Introduction, and the illustrated endpapers are not reproduced in subsequent editions (a map of Tierra del Fuego appears instead); a Very Good copy in faux-vellum-backed blue papered boards with panel & spine title labels, minor shelf & edge wear to the boards with a little quiet soiling (primarily along spine) and a small half-inch circular stain mid-spine, light bump to spine top/rear panel, 2 tiny puncture holes along front gutter, very slight gap between signatures at pages 64-5, else hinges & binding tight, pages unmarked & an overall excellent example of this beautifully produced and printed Rockwell Kent classic, with truly one-of-a-kind associations; 4to; xvi + 184pp illus + signed bound-in woodcut..         Le Reste est Silence...

Les Livres Celebres, Editions Lapina, 1924. Paperback. Near Fine. Heavy cardstock wraps in illustrated dust jacket, wrapped in glassine; woodcut illustrations throughout, with details printed in red and beige. Number 27 from a limited edition of 35 copies on "Japon Imperial" paper; and with an additional suite of the woodcut illustrations, loose, suitable for display, in a cardstock portfolio, wrapped in glassine. The whole housed in a good, sturdy folder (decorative paper over boards), likely missing a slipcase. Book is very gently bumped at tail of spine, with coordinating chips (tiny) in the glassine -- very near fine. Suite of plates -- also near fine, with a closed tear along bottom edge of the cardstock portfolio (plates themselves are fine). Folder is a little scuffed and worn, but it's done a remarkable job of protecting this lavish limited edition. Nice.
