Hyperprism for small Orchestra and Percussion

London: J. Curwen & Sons Ltd, 1924. First UK edition ["Curwen Edition 90747"], annotated by Varèse. 4to. Original printed wrappers with an Art Deco design by Witold Gordon, separated along spine and with remnant of old tape repair. Signed and annotated by the composer. Varèse has written in red china pencil on the title: "CORRECTED COPY / Edgar Varèse." In the same pencil, he made small corrections to the printed score, notably changing "Lion Roar" to "String Drum" on the listing of instrumentation, which he abbreviates as "St. D." in his corrections to the score wherever "L.R. [for Lion Roar] had been printed. 'Hyperprism" premiered at the Klaw Theatre in New York on 4 March 1923. The audience lauched throughout the performance and hissed during the ovation. It was reported that two men had a fistfight while exiting the hall. It is now considered a ground-breaking avant-garde composition. "I refuse to submit myself only to sounds that have already been heard," Varèse declared a few years earlier. "What I am looking for are new techical mediums that lend themselves to every expression of thought and can keep up with thought." Witold Gordon, who designed the cover, is the famed moderist illustrator responsible for two murals at Radio City Music Hall and the fine poster for the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid.

Laughing Anne & One Day More - Two Plays.

John Castle, London., 1924. First combined edition. Introduction by John Galsworthy. Octavo. 127 pages. 3 pages of adverts at rear. [From the Library of Gérard Jean-Aubry] who was Conrad's close friend and his first biographer. From the library of noted Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger with his small bookplate on front pastedown.Tipped on the blank facing page 19 ("A summary description of personages in the play") is an original sketch, in blue crayon, of the stage layout for Act II, Scene I of Laughing Anne and with the positioning of the characters written, in black ink, by Conrad: "Anne holding cards stands", "Mick", "Bamtz" and "Fector". At the lower corner is a note, in green ink, in Jean-Aubry's hand: "Plan de la scène - fait par Joseph Conrad." On the verso of this is a much rougher sketch for the final scene. The sketch may have been enclosed with a letter that Conrad wrote to Jean-Aubry in December 1920 in which he describes the work as "a play for Grand Guignol (English), 2 acts, 3 scenes. It will play forty minutes." The play did not get its first performance until 15 June 2000. Free endpapers tanned otherwise fine in very good nicked and creased dustwrapper with an enclosed tear at head of upper hinge. Preserved in a green buckram slipcase lettered in gilt and with an inner folding sleeve.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

Frontispiece illustration in each volume. Some volumes have a preface or introudction by Charlotte Bronte. The titles are:Anne Bronter: Agnes Grey, The Tenant of Wildfell HallEmily Bronte: Wuthering HeightsCharlotte Bronte: Jane Eyre, Villette, Shirley, The ProfessorMrs. Gaskel: Life of Charlotte Bronte Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855)Ê and her sisters Emily Bronte (1818-1848) and Anne Bronte (1820-1849) have charmed, inspired, and even shocked readers from the Victorian age to the present.Ê Raised in Haworth, Yorkshire, the three sisters produced such classics as Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.Ê Influenced by British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Scott, and Byron, the Brontes produced a cast of unforgettable characters such as the devoted governess, Jane Eyre, and the lovers, Heathcliff, Cathy, and Hareton.Ê The Bronte Family website explores the lives, literature, and art of these important Victorian women writers. The Bront‘s are the world's most famous literary family and Haworth Parsonage, now the Bront‘ Parsonage Museum, was their home from 1820 to 1861.ÊCharlotte, Emily and Anne Bront‘ were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte's novel 'Jane Eyre' (1847), Emily's 'Wuthering Heights' (1847), and Anne's 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' (1848) were written in this house over a hundred and fifty years ago, yet their power still moves readers today. To find two writers of genius in one family would be rare, but to find several writers in one household is unique in the history of literature. Charlotte and Emily are ranked among the world's greatest novelists; Anne is a powerful underrated author, and both their father, the Revd. Patrick Bront‘, and brother Branwell also saw their own works in print. The Bront‘s, published under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, were acknowledged at the time for their directness and powerful emotional energy, qualities which were sometimes interpreted by the critics as 'coarse' and 'brutal'. - Bronte Society.         Parades End (The"Tietjens" Novels): Some Do Not : No More Parades : A Man Could Stand Up : Last Post

A Four Volume set of 'Parades End'. ALL are the First UK Printings published by Duckworth between 1924-28. Vol.1 : 'SOME DO NOT' (published 1924), in olive green cloth with white lettering. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Pushing to the spine ends and light bumping to the corners. Fading of colouring to the spine and the white lettering but sill legible. Minor rubbing to the edges in a few places. Text-block lightly toned and spotted. Light offsetting and spotting to the endpapers and prelims. Light spotting to the page edges in places. The binding remains tight. Free from inscriptions. No wrapper present. David Dow Harvey's bibliography does not mention a wrapper until under the reprints for the same year as the first impression. It is unclear as to whether the first state was actually issued with a wrapper as the reprint wrapper's price was the same price as the first issue of 7/6 net. An extremely scarce title to find in any condition. Vol. 2 : 'NO MORE PARADES' (published 1925). The BOOK and WRAPPER are in near Fine condition. Light toning to the text-block with light spotting nd offsetting to the end papers and prelims. Free from inscriptions. The wrapper has some toning to the spine and folds. Apart from a little edge-wear at the upper spine ends, it is in wonderful condition for its age and as nice a copy as you are likely to find. Vol. 3 : 'A MAN COULD STAND UP' (published 1926). The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Light toning to the text block and offsetting to the end papers. Free from inscriptions. The WRAPPER is in Very Good+ condition. Mild edge-wear with a little loss at the spine ends and corners. A closed tear to the rear cover upper edge and lower front spine fold. Vol. 4 : 'LAST POST' (published 1928). The BOOK and WRAPPER are in near Fine condition. Light toning to the text-block and free from inscriptions. Small bookseller stick to the lower rear pastedown. The wrapper is very clean with just a little toning to the spine. A very sharp copy and as nice a copy as you are likely to find. All four wrappers are protected in removable Brodart archival covers. Ford's tetralogy set during WWI, mainly in England and on the western front, where Ford himself served as an officer in the Welch Regiment. John N. Gray hailed the 'Parade's End' tetralogy as 'possibly the greatest 20th-century novel in English' and Mary Gordon labeled it as 'quite simply, the best fictional treatment of war in the history of the novel.' The basis for the highly acclaimed 2012 BBC / HBO mini-series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rebecca Hall. A remarkable set - I can find no auction records for a set with such attributes in the last 20 years. Highly collectible. More images available on request.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

Plates as in "Eccentric Tales" from the German of W. F. Von Kosewitz, with Illustrations by Geo. Cruikshank, from (Sketches) by Alfred Crowquill (London: James Robins & Co. 1827)

None Stated: None stated, nd. Hardcover. Ex-library copy with usual marks. Plates mostly clean, but a few have minor-to-mild foxing. Two plates have perforation stamps on lower margins, not affecting plate images. Front end pages (ffep detached and laid in) contain 2 library plates, 2 personal book plates, and one additional plate. Some wear to spine, mostly at head/tail, and to leather corners, but nothing terribly offensive. Ex-lib. sticker on back cover.. Dark green 3/4 leather with complementary medium green cloth. Gilt edging, lettering and 3 bands (not raised). AEG. No text. 20 pp, each with an individual bw etching / engraving. With bookplates by prominent people. The title page is hand-lettered, and there is no printed publication information. This is a unique and important item of Cruikshankiana. Ex-library copy with minimally offensive marks, given the importance of each one. This volume contains ONLY the 20 engravings used as illustrations for Eccentric Tales. The original sketches were by Alfred Henry Forrester (under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill). The actual book illustrations then were done by George Cruikshank. This particular book contains Forrester's personal book plate. Another book plate is of Albert M. Cohn who wrote a catalogue raisonne of Cruikshank's works in 1924 (a small label on the fep makes reference to this catalogue, #471). And a third book plate is of William Hartman Woodin, Secretary of the Treasury under Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. The final bookplate present is that of the Brooklyn Public Library. Plates No. 8 and 15 have remarques. The Cruikshank illustrations in Eccentric Tales were, apparently, hand-tinted, but these images are in b/w with no tinting, and appear to be etching proofs for the final illustrations. Both Crowquill's and Cruikshank's names appear under each etching. Delightful and humorous illustrations done in great detail. Unique and rare.

[Photo album]: Young Woman's College Album from 1924 to 1930 in Ypsilanti, Michigan Featuring a Photograph of Mary Pickford

Ypsilanti, Michigan / Virginia / California. 1924-1930. Oblong octavo measuring 8" x 6". 59pp. String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 218 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 1.5" and 4.5" x 2.75" with captions, with additional ephemera from 1924 to 1930. Tears and chips with some pages detached but present thus very good with near fine photographs with tiny tears and creases. The photo album contains a plethora of photographs featuring Esther Davis and her adventures. Most pictures are of the three Davis daughters; Alice, Rachel, and Esther either posed or candid shots with their friends taken at Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Esther Davis is seen dancing and smiling with all her glee club members, standing outside wearing fancy clothing or costumes, and graduating high school and college. Esther Davis lived in the Bessie Leach Priddy House, a sorority, at Michigan State Normal College. While most of the pictures are from Michigan, some are labeled from places in Virginia and California. Two of which feature photos of Mary Pickford on the set of Little Annie Rooney which was being filmed in West Hollywood, California. Pickford was 33 at the time of filming but played a spry and determined young Irish girl. The movie became one of the highest grossing films of 1925. Pickford is seen smiling with the cast in one photo and then posing in the other. Both photos are fine with "Mary Pickford in 'Annie Roonie," written on the bottom edge. An interesting collection of photographs from a young woman during 1924 to 1930 documenting her adventures with friends and family, completing her education, and her encounter with Mary Pickford. .
