Complete set of 1st Belgrade surrealist magazine

SVEDOCANSTVA [Testimonies]. Knjizevni casopis izlazi desetodnevno [Literary magazine published every 10 days]. Ed. by Djordje Djordjević. No. 1-8. Beograd: (Rodlojub [Patriot]) 1924/25. Gr. 8° (22,5-24,5:17,5 cm). 16 p. each. Original publisher's pictorial wrapper, every volume on differently coloured stock and cover design. Complete set of this first collective publishing adventure of the later Belgrade surrealists around Marko Ristić (who contributed the first Serbian text written according the the rules of »écriture automatique« titled „Example" (no. 3), Dušan Matić, Milan Dedinac, Mladen Dimitrijević and Aleksandar Vučo, as well as some affiliated progressive poets like Moni de Buli (Monny de Boully), Rastko Petrović and others. As the title of the review suggests »Svedocanstva« should deliver testimonies to the contemporary developments in Serbian arts and society but also abroad, containing poetry, essays, short prose, letters as well as documents. Printed in 1.000 copies each (nevertheless hard to find today in complete sets) the issues of this magazine document early established and close ties to the French surrealist movement, whose periodical »La Révolution surréaliste« is promoted (no. 1). Matić, a professor of philosophy and major theoretical proponent of the Belgrade movement, and the poet Moni de Buli later signed the French surrealist's declaration „La révolution d'abord et toujours" in 1925. Additionally »Svedocanstva« contains translations of works by foreign modernist poets like Aleksandar Block (no. 2). Each issue of the magazine is devoted to a single subject, e.g. on art brute or primitive art (created by lunatics or children, no. 6), on dreaming, as one of the surrealist's main topics, etc. Together the set shows a unity in message and artistical, literary as well as philosophical activity of the Belgrade group and their relations the international avant-gardes. The visual material reproduced in »Svedocanstva« (where of 5 plates, 1 inserted) consists of e.g. the picture novel „Vampir" (later reprinted in full length in »La Révolution surréaliste« (Oct. 1925), numerous reproductions of comic like drawings and also of some photographies made by Rastko Petrović showing tattooed outlaws (prisoners, prostitutes etc.) The rear cover incorporates a reproduction of a design by Picasso, drawn on a post-card especially for and dedicated to the editor's board of »Svedocanstva« and later sent to Belgrade. Attached: Advertising leaflet for »Svedocanstva«. 22:12,3 cm. Black offset print on one side on yellow stock. Rear cover of no. 1 with on small fault (not inflicting text or illustration), margins and paper slightly time stained, staples and paper around it in parts rusty, otherwise well preserved, mainly uncut set of this rare and important magazine with surrealist tendencies avant la lettre. Centre Pompidou, ed.: Le Fonds Destribats, 2011, no. 222; Antiquariaat Vloemans, Catalogue 129, no. 224; Kapidzic-Osmanagić, Hanifa: Le surréalisme serbe 1968, p. 76-98; Tijardović-Popović: Photography in Serbian Surrealism 2002, S. 46f.; Todić, Nemoguče 2002, S. 164f.

Set of Eleven Photographic Negative Prints of Hands.

Berlin c.-1930 1924 - Photographic negative prints of Paul Wolff, Theodor Echtermeyer, Peter Schmidt, Alexander von Rothe, Eugen Fischer, Prof.Dr. Ludwig Heck, Wilhelm Filchner, Prof. Hans Friedenthal, N.N. Godbole, Alfons Goldschmidt and August von Parseval hands. Size: 21.cmm by 17.4cm approx. Collected by German palmist Marianne Raschig who spent 60 years taking more than 2,000 hand prints of around 1,000 leading artists, actors, scientists, musicians and writers in Berlin. Raschig collected the hand prints between the 1870s and 1930s for a study into what the lines and shapes of hands could reveal about a person's character. Palm readers believe that every person's hands has a series of 'lines' and 'mounts' which reveal their personality traits and even predict their future. Raschig published her study in a 1931 book Hand und Persönlichkeit (Hand and Personality) which is still used today.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe.

Karl Heinz Haag lebte in Frankfurt-Höchst. (Wikipedia) Theodor W. Adorno ( born Theodor Ludwig Wiesengrund September 11, 1903 August 6, 1969) was a German philosopher, sociologist, and composer known for his critical theory of society. He was a leading member of the Frankfurt School of critical theory, whose work has come to be associated with thinkers such as Ernst Bloch, Walter Benjamin, Max Horkheimer and Herbert Marcuse, for whom the works of Freud, Marx, and Hegel were essential to a critique of modern society. He is widely regarded as one of the 20th century's foremost thinkers on aesthetics and philosophy, as well as one of its preeminent essayists. As a critic of both fascism and what he called the culture industry, his writingssuch as Dialectic of Enlightenment (1947), Minima Moralia (1951) and Negative Dialectics (1966)strongly influenced the European New Left. Amidst the vogue enjoyed by existentialism and positivism in early 20th-century Europe, Adorno advanced a dialectical conception of natural history that critiqued the twin temptations of ontology and empiricism through studies of Kierkegaard and Husserl. As a classically trained pianist whose sympathies with the twelve-tone technique of Arnold Schoenberg resulted in his studying composition with Alban Berg of the Second Viennese School, Adorno's commitment to avant-garde music formed the backdrop of his subsequent writings and led to his collaboration with Thomas Mann on the latter's novel Doctor Faustus, while the two men lived in California as exiles during the Second World War. Working for the newly relocated Institute for Social Research, Adorno collaborated on influential studies of authoritarianism, antisemitism and propaganda that would later serve as models for sociological studies the Institute carried out in post-war Germany. Upon his return to Frankfurt, Adorno was involved with the reconstitution of German intellectual life through debates with Karl Popper on the limitations of positivist science, critiques of Heidegger's language of authenticity, writings on German responsibility for the Holocaust, and continued interventions into matters of public policy. As a writer of polemics in the tradition of Nietzsche and Karl Kraus, Adorno delivered scathing critiques of contemporary Western culture. Adorno's posthumously published Aesthetic Theory, which he planned to dedicate to Samuel Beckett, is the culmination of a lifelong commitment to modern art which attempts to revoke the "fatal separation" of feeling and understanding long demanded by the history of philosophy and explode the privilege aesthetics accords to content over form and contemplation over immersion.         Hyperprism for small Orchestra and Percussion

London: J. Curwen & Sons Ltd, 1924. First UK edition ["Curwen Edition 90747"], annotated by Varèse. 4to. Original printed wrappers with an Art Deco design by Witold Gordon, separated along spine and with remnant of old tape repair. Signed and annotated by the composer. Varèse has written in red china pencil on the title: "CORRECTED COPY / Edgar Varèse." In the same pencil, he made small corrections to the printed score, notably changing "Lion Roar" to "String Drum" on the listing of instrumentation, which he abbreviates as "St. D." in his corrections to the score wherever "L.R. [for Lion Roar] had been printed. 'Hyperprism" premiered at the Klaw Theatre in New York on 4 March 1923. The audience lauched throughout the performance and hissed during the ovation. It was reported that two men had a fistfight while exiting the hall. It is now considered a ground-breaking avant-garde composition. "I refuse to submit myself only to sounds that have already been heard," Varèse declared a few years earlier. "What I am looking for are new techical mediums that lend themselves to every expression of thought and can keep up with thought." Witold Gordon, who designed the cover, is the famed moderist illustrator responsible for two murals at Radio City Music Hall and the fine poster for the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid.

Laughing Anne & One Day More - Two Plays.

John Castle, London., 1924. First combined edition. Introduction by John Galsworthy. Octavo. 127 pages. 3 pages of adverts at rear. [From the Library of Gérard Jean-Aubry] who was Conrad's close friend and his first biographer. From the library of noted Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger with his small bookplate on front pastedown.Tipped on the blank facing page 19 ("A summary description of personages in the play") is an original sketch, in blue crayon, of the stage layout for Act II, Scene I of Laughing Anne and with the positioning of the characters written, in black ink, by Conrad: "Anne holding cards stands", "Mick", "Bamtz" and "Fector". At the lower corner is a note, in green ink, in Jean-Aubry's hand: "Plan de la scène - fait par Joseph Conrad." On the verso of this is a much rougher sketch for the final scene. The sketch may have been enclosed with a letter that Conrad wrote to Jean-Aubry in December 1920 in which he describes the work as "a play for Grand Guignol (English), 2 acts, 3 scenes. It will play forty minutes." The play did not get its first performance until 15 June 2000. Free endpapers tanned otherwise fine in very good nicked and creased dustwrapper with an enclosed tear at head of upper hinge. Preserved in a green buckram slipcase lettered in gilt and with an inner folding sleeve.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.
