Pepys' diary is available in various editions (see, for example, items #140 and 169); the chief value of the present printing is that it is done on India paper, allowing the full substantial text to be contained in a very manageable space. And the compactness of this edition is here very much enhanced by the bindings, made with high quality morocco and expertly finished. (The Sangorski Latinist has, however, fallen short of perfection: Pepys chose as his personal motto "mens cujusque is est quisque," or "what a man's mind is, that is what he is," but here the first word is unfortunately spelled "mons," Latin for "mountain.").

ONE OF 1,670 COPIES, OF WHICH THIS IS ONE OF 1,050 FOR AMERICA (1,000 of them for sale), SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR (this is copy #982). 235 x 159 mm (9 1/4 x 6 1/4"). 28 volumes. Original publisher's linen backed green paper boards, paper title labels on flat spines, edges rough trimmed. Half of the volumes UNOPENED, and all encased in the original (slightly worn) slipcases (one slipcase a modern replica). Photographic frontispiece in each volume. Title pages in red and black. Printed on high quality rag paper. Most volumes with extra paper labels. Spines slightly darkened, rough edges a bit yellowed, three leaves with open marginal tears well away from the text (no doubt from rough opening), other trivial imperfections, but A VERY FINE SET, many of the volumes in near pristine condition, with much of the text having never been read. This is an attractively produced as well as textually important edition of the works of one of the most significant British authors at work during the final years of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th. The prolific and durable Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) is most famous for his imaginative fiction from the 1890s. Works like "The Time Machine" (1895), "The Island of Dr. Moreau" (1896), "The Invisible Man" (1897), "War of the Worlds" (1898) and "When the Sleeper Awakes" (1899) established Wells as a master (along with Jules Verne) of science fiction. At the same time, his novels from the new century were of considerable interest and value as well. His "Anticipations" (1902) "showed his real gift for sociological speculation" (DNB), and his "Tongo-Bungay" (1909) -- which tells the story of a corporate mogul who makes his fortune selling a slightly injurious patent medicine and, when everything else fails, turns to building war munitions--is often considered Wells' masterpiece. In addition to the major works of fiction, our 28 volumes obviously also include a large number of short pieces of fiction and nonfiction. By the time Wells died, he had published more than 100 books and established his fame not only as a writer, but also as a minor prophet who accurately predicted war planes, tanks, the atomic bomb, and World War II. Wells was born to lower middle class parents, and his early work life was unsuccessful as a draper and chemist's assistant. With each failure, Wells would reside with his mother on the estate where she served as a domestic and there immerse himself in its fine library. Later he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science, studying biology under Darwin's major defender, T. H. Huxley (1825-95), meanwhile dabbling in contemporary ideas of socialism through free lectures at the Fabian Society. After earning a degree in zoology and geology, Wells taught and began publishing short stories, becoming a full-time writer after his major success with "The Time Machine." Printed on pure rag deckle-edge paper, the text of the present edition was read and revised throughout by Wells, and he wrote a special preface to each volume as well as a general introduction to the edition as a whole.

      Ditchling: St. Dominic's Press. VG. 1924. First Edition. Softcover. Grey printed wraps, a little wear to spine ends and corners of covers, title page printed in red and black, internally clean and bright, fifteen wood engraved illustrations by David Jones, two of which are reproduced on the upper cover. , David Jones (1895-1974) was a painter, wood engraver and one of the most important of the British modernist poets and his poem, 'The Anathemata', was considered by W. H. Auden to be the best long poem written in English in the 20th century. During the First World War Jones served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers and after demobilization, won a government scholarship to study art at the Westminster School of Art. Like a number of other artists and writers who had seen active service during the war, Jones was increasingly drawn to Roman Catholicism, to which he converted in 1921. It was probably Father John O'Connor (in fact the model for G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown character), who suggested that he contact the Catholic artist Eric Gill, and so Jones joined Gill's Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, where he learned wood and copper engraving. Here Jones began illustrating books, initially for the St. Dominic's Press and later for the Golden Cockerel Press, for which he engraved the Cockerel itself in 1925. Despite a growing reputation as an illustrator Jones became increasingly dissaffected with the medium and for the rest of his career as an artist he concentrated on painting, his style moving from traditional watercolour to a unique mixture of pencil and watercolour, in which he produced dense works full of symbolism. , 8" by 5.5", [9] 2-37 [7] pp .

Therefore this is one of only 100 possible complete sets. The House at Pooh Corner is additionally signed by Christopher Milne.

Text block and interior pages are clean and unmarked.*** This was the last work Kafka saw to press in his lifetime and published in the year of his death. He worked on correcting proofs of the book as he was dying. About 3,000 copies printed, though the files of Die Schmiede which published mainly Jews and Zionists was eradicated by the Nazis, unusual for them as German methodicalness – "Vorsprung durch Technik". (For example, retaining the Altneu Synagogue of Prague, as well as so many religious and cultural relics in the adjoining museum, was based on the idea of exhibiting the relics of an extinct race.) Overall a superior copy of what Gilbert described as "the only significant historical work in English on the Rosicrucian movement of the 17th century and its successors." [Gilbert A37(a)]. , Waite, Arthur Edward (1857–1942) was an English mystic and historian of occultism who, after the death of his father, was raised by his devout Roman Catholic mother. However after the death of his sister in 1874 Waite was drawn to spiritualism and from there to theosophy, alchemy and the occult. While he was actively involved in the occult revival of the late 19th century, being a member of the Golden Dawn and a founder of the Alchemical Society, Waite was never truly an occultist and saw himself more as a mystic seeking what he termed the "secret tradition', the knowledge by which man can achieve union with the divine. Waite is perhaps best known now for his translations of the work of Eliphas Levi and for the tarot cards designed under his supervision, which remain the best selling tarot cards of all time. Fine leather binding with the original paper wraps bound in. Signed by Cushing on the front cover with a brief inscription for his nephew: "Edward H. Cushing / from / H.C." Cushing family bookplate on the front pastedown with the ownership signature of E. H. Cushing. The bookplate, designed by Harvey Cushing himself, incorporates his family crest and motto, along with the initials of the long line of doctors from the Cushing family and the years they graduated medical school. Cushing signed with his initials "HC" when the recipient was family or close friend. For those inscriptions to folks he did not know well, he signed in full. Handsomely bound in half-leather over burgundy cloth. Gilt spine title and ruling. Original printed gray paper covers bound in. 8vo., 33pp followed by (50) blank leaves evidently added by the binder to enhance the appearance of the volume for the Cushing family. Small binder’s ticket on rear pastedown (W.A. De Podesta / Art Book Binder / Cleveland.) Map illustration facing the first page of text. A very good or better copy with sound, tight binding. Some light rubbing and wear to the extremities and along the outer joints. Modest age-toning to the endpapers and some darkening of the fore-edge areas adjacent to the leather corners. Text pages clean and unmarked. No creasing, tears or other flaws to the paper covers. A superb Cushing item (1869-1939), noted American neurosurgeon, an innovator of brain surgery, and the first to describe Cushing’s syndrome. Often called the father of modern neurosurgery, Cushing was a professor at Harvard starting in 1911, later served in a medical capacity with allied forces in World War I, and was with the Yale University School of Medicine from 1933 until his retirement in 1937. His literary credits include a 1926 Pulitzer Prize for his biography of another medical pioneer, Sir William Osler. Cushing Bibliography no. 224. "The essay shows evidence of much patient research, but as with the 'Osler' it was obviously a labor of love, since there was nothing that stirred him [Cushing] more than the stories of his pioneering forebears on both sides of the family who, discontented with their lot in New England journeyed to the Western Reserve where they set up their own vigorous way of life, their schools, and their traditions in medicine" - Fulton, Harvey Cushing, pp. 511. First trade editions of the constituent volumes of Milne's durable chronicle of the adventures of Christopher Robin, with the circle widening to include Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet, et al. The first volume is the second state, with page 'ix' numbered. It bears a small ink 1924 gift inscription in the upper corner of the free endsheet, has a bit of the usual offsetting to the endsheet gutters, and bears the tiny bookplate of Mary Elisabeth Hudson on the pastedown. It is otherwise very good and bright, in lightly worn and tanned dust jacket, with a few small nicks and faint spots. The second volume is fine and bright, in near fine dust jacket with a couple finger smudges on the front panel, a trace of tanning and a few faint spots to the spine panel, and a short, closed tear at the top edge of the front panel. The third volume is fine and bright in very good dust jacket with trace of tanning to spine and edges, and a few faint spots to the spine. The final volume is fine and bright, in near fine dust jacket with a few faint spots on the spine panel. Withal, while not a perfect set, this a very, very respectable one.

      London: Methuen , (1924). Two quarto volumes. xiv, 249; xiv, 384pp. From an edition of 1,500 copies, this a donor’s copy in a deluxe binding, presented to the architect Miss Clare C. Nauheim. Her name is inscribed on the limitation page and is also included in the list of donors at the end of the first volume. It is clear that Miss Nauheim had an intimate knowledge of the doll house and its contents: she made annotations in pencil on several pages of the inventory appendix, correcting or adding to the items listed for certain rooms. For example, the “eight Egyptian amulets” originally in a hallway vitrine were changed to three, and a towel horse was omitted from the princess royal’s room. Each volume is profusely illustrated in color and black & white. The first volume describes Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House at Windsor Castle, its architecture, furniture, and paintings, with a chapter on the garden by Gertrude Jekyll. The second volume deals exclusively with the library of the Dolls’ House, containing a complete listing of the books, facsimile pages of handwritten books for the library, and reproductions of many of the seven hundred watercolors painted for the Queen. A bibliographic treasure. A fine set in vellum-backed blue cloth boards, gilt-stamped with the Queen’s monogram on the front covers.

        Portrait of Lillian Gish In Romola

      Hollywood: Metro Goldwyn Mayer, 1924. Superb original portrait of Lillian Gish taken by the well known photographer Charles Albin. He and Gish had a friendship and a long working partnership, and he went with her to Italy for the filming of Romola and took a series of photographs there. This being one of his portraits of Gish that was used for publicity. Albin had a short but very intereresting life including near death and accusations of murder. His name is printed in the still. The film also featured Dorothy Gish, Ronald Colman and William Powell with direction by Henry King. Caption attached to the verso, and 2 old tape mends to two corners on the verso. Fine. . The caption that is attached on the back reads in part 'Those famous Gish sisters, Lillian and Dorothy, play together again in Romola their latest picture.       Berlin, Die Schmiede, 1924. Uncut in the original publisher's full green cloth, with the printed paper-title-label to spine and front board. Spine faded, and inner front hinge a little bitweak, otherwise a very fine and clean copy.. First edition of the last of Kafka's publications to be prepared by himself; published posthumously, however. It is a collection of four short stories including the title-story "Ein Hungerkünstler" (i.e. "A Fasting Artist" or "A Starvation Artist). The three other stories being "Erstes Leid", "Eine kleine Frau" and "Josefine, die Sängerin, oder das Volk der Mäuse", all four exhibiting the concision and lucidity characteristic of Kafka's later period. Among his papers, a document was found, which was written in October 1922 and called "my last will concerning all I have written", in which he states: "Of all my writings the only books that count are these: "The Judgement", "The Stoker", "Metamorphosis", "In the Penal Colony", "A Country Doctor" and the short story "A Fasting Artist". ( Murray, "Kafka", p. 348).The title story "Ein Hungerkünstler" originally appeared in 1922, in "Die Neue Rundschau". It is the tale of a trapeze artist who, as the only way of keeping his art at the pitch of perfection, remains up on the trapeze permanently day and night. Even when the circus is travelling from one location to another, the trapeze hangs upside down from the luggage rack. "Ein Hungerkünstler" if often interpreted as a dramatized expression of Kafka's ill health and his fear of physical and mental collapse."This is a typical Kafka short story: beautifully exact and told with the briskly straightforward pace of a realistic narrative, except that it is an utterly fantastic invention. It has that boldly dramatic, expressionist manner - as when the artist burst into tears and the manager 'stroked him and laid his cheek against him, so that he too was bathed in the trapeze artist's tears' - which is the hallmark of Kafka's fictional style. And it has the feel and suggestiveness of a parable, its rigorous and self-sustaining objectivity inescapably suggesting a symbolic purpose. In this case it persuades that it is about artistic maturity, the inability of the artist to find peace in the exclusive exercise of his art, in his solipsistic obsession." (Murray, p. 333)

      Moscow, 1924. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. A Very Good + copy of the first Russian edition, first printing, of Ivan Bunin&#39;s third novel, contemporarily rebound in 3/4 leather, including the original wrappers, with the boards and bulked page edges marbled, SIGNED BY IVAN BUNIN on the title page. A prominent and highly-respected author, Bunin won the 1933 Nobel Prize in Literature for "the strict artistry with which he has carried on the classical Russian traditions in prose writing", making him the first Russian writer ever to win the Prize. Bunin also won Russia&#39;s Pushkin Prize multiple times, and counted other great writers, such as Vladimir Nabokov, among his admirers. With respect to Mitya&#39;s Love, Georg Brandes, the Danish author and historian, stated: "I&#39;ve read Mitya&#146;s Love...and got very excited. I am amazed by the way how subtly the depths of love are being examined and can but express my delight". Foreshadowing the Nobel Committee&#39;s evaluation of Bunin&#39;s work, Henri de Régnier, one of France&#39;s most important Poets of the era, praised Mitya&#39;s Love as being equal to Russia&#39;s best classical literature, stating: "Bunin&#39;s fine book is the work of one of the Russian masters of an old novel - the kind that prospered in those times when Russia was the homeland of Tolstoy and Turgenev... Bunin, for all his peculiarities, belongs to this family of high quality masters". This rare copy of the novella is in Very Good + condition, with moderate wear to the binding and with a small library stamp and number to the title page&#39;s verso, an additional small partial library stamp to the outer margin of several pages -- just barely touching the edge of the text of one page, and again to the verso of the final page -- not invading the text --- the book shows no other indications of its prior library status and is internally pleasing with only modest toning to the pages. A book number is stamped in blind on the spine tail. As the spine number does not match the library number inside the book, and as there are no library stamps to the pastedowns, we believe the hardcover biding to be later, and perhaps privately done. This copy belonged to Actor Jack Palance and has the bookplate from the 2006 sale of his personal property on the front pastedown. A Very Good + copy of an extraordinarily scarce book, SIGNED BY IVAN BUNIN. A RARE EARLY SIGNED BUNIN.
