        The Fire in the Flint

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1924 - First edition. Some spotting and faint staining to the boards, a near very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author to Anne and Clarence Dillon: "To Ann [sic] and Clarence -- With all good wishes -- Ever sincerely Walter F. White. New York City, 29 August 1924." Clarence Dillon, a bond broker and one of the richest men in the country, and his wife Anne, were the parents of C. Douglas Dillon, who served as Secretary of the Treasury. The author's first book, one of the first wave of novels from the Harlem Renaissance, about a black medical doctor who returns to his Georgia home hoping to improve the lot of his fellows, only to be met with prejudice, suspicion, and violence. It deals in part with lynching, a practice against which White, in his capacity as the outspoken longtime executive secretary of the NAACP, waged a long and ultimately successful campaign. Signed copies are scarce. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Veni VD Vici

Milan: Verzocchi, 1924. An unusual trade catalogue for V&D, producers of high quality English firebricks in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The company was owned by Verzocchi a wealthy Italian industrialist who in the 1920s' began commissioning works of art by the most respected Italian illustrators and artists of the day. A condition of his patronage (and apparently appearance in this catalogue) was that a “V & D” logo brick should feature somewhere in the work. Verzocchi established a private-press to produce the catalogue. Works by Baldassini, Cisari, De Carolis, Depero, Dudovich, Marussig, Miti Zanetti, Nizzoli, Parmeggiani, Sinopico, Stroppa and Zampini, among others, are included in high quality reproductions each tissue guarded. The tissue pages contain faint descriptions (in Italian) of the specifications of the firebricks produced. There is a two page introduction by the author (in English) and 32 plates. The book is octavo, in quality "card" covers. The contents are unmarked. The binding is tight, the front endpaper has three rust spots presumably from staples hidden below. The covers have the odd mark, slight creasing to the oversize edges, one small nick and a little rubbing to the bottom of the spine. Overall, this is a super copy of a scarce item. .

Author's Original Corrected Proofs and Associated Matter for: DIALOGUES SUR LE COMMANDEMENT.

Paris, Bernard Grasset, [1924]. - Ca. 130 leaves, plus numerous inserts and pasteovers. Octavo. Original publisher's letterpress proofs, with authorial corrections and revisions (including substantial insertions and deletions) throughout, with leaves and slips of typescript (many with additional manuscript additions) inserted, bound up with preliminary drawings for the layout of the title leaf and ornaments. Full deep red brown crushed levant by La Haye, with geometric inlays in red and medium brown morocco extending across boards, with doublures with matching red morocco inlays, t.e.g., others untrimmed. One joint a bit rubbed, some spotting along top edge of upper board, with small ink drop on spine, internally very good consistent with nature of material. Maurois's set of corrected galley proofs for this work, the preliminaries mock-ups still reflecting the working title, NICIAS TROIS DIALOGUES SUR LE COMMANDMENT. While the proofs show the usual corrections of mechanicals and the like, Maurois also chose to substantially edit and rework the text in a number of places by way of pasteovers and inserts (including in one instance three full quarto leaves of typescript, and several other instances of almost full leaves of single-spaced typescript). He made substantial deletions of a number of long passages and the original text remains completely accessible. An inserted preliminary bears Maurois's caption title for his work in his hand (including two additional alternate titles), and his presentation inscription: "Pour Jean Lévy-Strauss, ami du livre et de l'auteur, en affecteux souvenir". - Talvart & Place notes the preparation of fifteen copies of the text prior to correction for circulation hors commerce; the corrected text for which these proofs and leaves of manuscript/typescript evidently served as basis was published in the distinguished Les Cahiers Verts series. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece portrait and 5 additional portraits from various sources. 8vo, publisher's original paper covered boards printed on the upper cover in black, backed in gray/blue cloth, the spine gilt lettered. 136 pp. A very attractive and well preserved copy, far better than would be expected for a Calcutta printing of the period, the prelims with a bit of age evidence, the spine just a touch toned. SIGNED AND DATED BY MAHATMA GANDHI IN 1926, one of the greatest men of the age. The work is rare in first edition and in collectable condition and we know of no other copy signed by Gandhi. The "Union of Socialists-Revolutionaries Maximalists was a political party in the Russian Empire, a radical wing expelled from the Socialist-Revolutionary Party in 1906. The Union united agrarian terrorists, the 'Moscow Opposition' and other radical dissidents from the PSR in an independent party. The Maximalists officially split off from the PSR at its Second Congress in Imatra in 1906. Maximalists played a role in both the Revolution of 1905 and the Revolution of 1917. Many former SR Maximalists eventually joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolshevik)….Maximalists were so called because they demanded the full implementation of the 'maximum programme' in the expected revolution: full socialisation of the land, factories and all other means of production. The orthodox Socialist-Revolutionaries wanted to start with land reform but defer socialisation of other means of production. The Maximalists also rejected the PSR's version of a 'two-stage' revolution, a theory associated with V.M. Chernov. According to Chernov, the coming revolution in Russia would not be purely 'bourgeois-democratic' as the Social-Democrats claimed, but would include social and economic as well as political reforms. It would be a 'popular-democratic' revolution, and would transition into a full-blown 'labour-socialist' revolution later on. The Maximalists rejected this as Social-Democratic 'attentism' and argued that the coming Russian revolution would not be able to stop half-way; it was the two-stage theory, not Maximalism, that was unrealistic if it thought the toiling masses, once liberated, would content themselves with a bourgeois republic and gradual reforms." (Wikipedia, 2012) OCLC lists 9 copies. Publisher's typo on final page of No. 20/21: issue listed as "No. 20-25". Pages darkened but not fragile; some edgewear. Issue no. 24-26 worn with minor closed tears along gutter margin. Issue no. 8 outer wrappers detached but present. No 12/13 with small loss of paper and a few words. This is not so much an autobiography as an unconnected series of thoughts put down over the years, with the stipulation that they not be published until after his death ("I am writing from the grave. On these terms only can a man be approximately frank").~This is a remarkably fine, complete set: the two volumes are as new, the two dust jackets are fine except for fading of their spines and a few small smudges, and the publisher's box, while showing some minor wear at its edges, is uncommonly present. Blanck 3537 (state A, with ads in Vol II); McBride p. 254. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase.

MARK TWAIN'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, With an Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1924. 2 volumes. First edition, first state. Portrait frontispiece in each volume. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original dark-blue ribbed cloth gilt lettered on the spines, t.e.g., with a facsimile of Twain’s autograph in gilt on the upper covers. 361, index; 357, index, ads pp. An especially fine and very bright, and very clean set. A beautiful example, as pristine. Rarely encountered in this condition. A BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED AND ESPECIALLY HANDSOME COPY OF THE FIRST STATE OF THE FIRST EDITION. “As might be expected of anything which Mark Twain wrote, this autobiography is unlike any other ever written-as unconventional and unorthodox as its great author. Always, when the time came for him to go on with the dictation, he chose as his subject whatever was most interesting to him at the moment, regardless of chronological order. For he believed that a man’s thoughts, not his outward acts are his true history, which alone reveal him completely. “The resulting book is a stream of table-talk: anecdotes, humorous and serious; reminiscences of his mother, his daughter Susy, his boyhood days in Missouri; chronicles of his friendships with all manner of men, from General Grant and President Cleveland to his Irish coachman and the unfamed intimates of his vagabond youth; bold expressions of opinion on every sort of topic-all are here, full of the vigor and the humanity of their author, and forming an inexhaustible mine of entertainment, amusement, and delight.” Dictated by Twain over several years with the stipulation that it be published after his death.

Four Pooh Books, Comprised of:] WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG [and] WINNIE-THE-POOH [and] NOW WE ARE SIX [and] THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER

London: Methuen and co., 1924, 1926, 1927 1928. First Edition of each volume. Illustrated by E.H. Shepard throughout each volume. 8vo, beautifully bound by Bayntun-Riviere in fine full gilt decorated morocco. Each volume is bound in a colour to match the original cloth covers. The spines are richly gilt, the covers are pictorially decorated in gilt with images of Pooh and his friends. The original covers and spine panels are bound into the rear of each book. All volumes are housed together in a cloth covered slipcase. An elegant production. x,100; xi,158; x,103; xi,178 pp. All copies are very fine and beautifully preserved. VERY FINE COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITIONS OF EACH OF THE FOUR POOH BOOKS, BEAUTIFULLY BOUND. These charming children’s classics contain delicately detailed illustrations and some of the most beloved stories of all time. From the first poem or story to the last drawing, the reader is transported to another world of imagination and youthful play. “When We Were Very Young” was the first of the “Pooh” books and was extremely successful in both America and England. Ironically, when A.A. Milne was first presented with the possibility of Ernest Shepard being the illustrator for this first Pooh book, he was less than pleased, having never been particularly drawn to Shepard’s style. But the illustrator won out in the end and the rest is legend. The book’s success in both America and England was phenomenal, and it went through six printings in just one year and six more the next. The public voraciousness for his work inspired Milne to follow WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG with WINNIE THE POOH, NOW WE ARE SIX, and THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER. Some of the most cherished and beloved verses of our time rest on the charmingly illustrated pages of this first volume in the series of books that have become timeless classics. This book is dedicated to Milne’s son, Christopher Robin Milne, who “prefers to call himself Billy Moon.” The second book in the series is WINNIE THE POOH and the one included here is a beautiful copy of the most famous of the four Pooh books. Milne's classic story, all about Christopher Robin, Winnie-The-Pooh, and their friends Eeyore, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga, and Baby Roo. WINNIE-THE-POOH came into being in the wake of his first book of verse, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG, which was the first collaboration of Milne’s words and E.H. Shepard’s delightful illustrations. Milne and Shepard truly ascended to harmonious heights with the cast of characters in WINNIE-THE-POOH based on the stuffed animal collection of Milne’s own son, Christopher Robin, who also became immortalized as one of the main characters in the Pooh series. “E.H. Shepard’s illustrations to A.A. Milne’s POOH stories form without doubt one of the great classics of children’s book illustration. It is important to understand, however, how remarkable that is for Shepard’s success as an illustrator was not based on the technical power of draughtsmanship we see in the work of artists such as Rackham. We do not go with him for a prolonged journey of the eye as we do with the great masters of drawing. His illustrations are classics for a wholly different reason. Our approach must be through the eyes of childhood, for Shepard’s Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger cast their compulsive spell because the artist only ever makes them but very slightly removed from the stuffed toys on the nursery shelf. Whereas Beatrix Potter’s animals are almost transformed into furry occupants of the same domain, in the case of Shepard the journey is made in precisely the opposite direction... There is a slightness to them, a delightful, rapid, thrown-off quality... Shepard’s genius lay surely in being able to match exactly the mood of Milne’s texts which have a similar and complementary rambling quality. A less whimsical artist would have upset the balance. As it is, writer and illustrator were perfectly allied in a curiously English way, achieving thereby one of the great classics of childhood literature” (THE POOH SKETCH BOOK, Sibley.) The third book in the quartet written by Milne, inspired by his young son Christopher, and illustrated by Shepard was an instant success. Like WHEN WE WERE YOUNG, NOW WE ARE SIX is a joyful combination of verse and pictures designed to captivate young readers. Christopher Milne wrote of his father’s stories: “It is difficult to be sure which came first. Did I do something and did my father then write a story about it? Or was it the other way about, and did the story come first? Certainly my father was on the look-out for ideas; but so too was I. He wanted ideas for his stories, I wanted them for my games, and each looked towards the other for inspiration. But in the end it was all the same: the stories became part of our lives; we lived them, thought them, spoke them.”-Enchanted Places. Most likely it was this unique collaboration between father and son which makes these little stories and poems so intimate and personal. THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER is the last of the four beloved Pooh books. In this charming offering Eeyore’s friends employ “Brains first and then Hard Work” to build him a house. There are also big happenings for Tigger in this volume and Rabbit has a very busy day. Milne had bought a country house in Sussex, and it was there that many of his poems were set. Amid fields, under cherry trees, in rustic barnyards, and down by the pond, these poetic yarns lead young minds to a refreshing holiday in nature. And, as always, Shepard’s drawings capture our hearts with their endearing images of a boy and his roly-poly teddy bear, their endless adventures, and much much more. These buoyant illustrations are sure to bring a smile to the innate child buried somewhere within each of us. And who can resist the charm of Milne’s writing when in a P.S. to his introduction he notes: “Pooh wants us to say that he thought it was a different book; and he hopes you won’t mind, but he walked through it one day, looking for his friend Piglet, and sat down on some of the pages by mistake.”Dense with wonderful poems and illustrations, these books started the public off on a love affair with some of the most memorable characters in all of children's literature. A complete set of the limited signed editions in such outstanding condition and in the scarce dustjackets is a rare treasure for those of us who love Winnie, Christopher Robin, Piglet and the rest of the citizens of the “100 Aker Wood”.

THE YOUNG KING AND OTHER TALES

Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1924. ONE OF 65 COPIES PRINTED ON PAPER (and seven on vellum). Hardcover. Presented by "Rosamund" Hornby,But in her Printer-Father's Handwriting. 213 x 146 mm (8 3/8 x 5 3/4"). 3 p.l., 111 pp., plus integral blank leaf at end. ONE OF 65 COPIES PRINTED ON PAPER (and seven on vellum). Original patterned paper boards of rust and green, paper spine label. Hand-painted red and blue initials by Graily Hewitt. Printed in red, blue, and black in Subiaco type. Front flyleaf inscribed "With love from Rosamund / July, 1924." Spine just slightly cocked and faintly darkened, tail of spine a little bumped, otherwise a fine copy of a work difficult to find in pleasing condition--the binding with almost no wear, and the text especially clean, fresh, and bright. This hefty little occasional volume was a gift for Rosamund M. Hornby on her 10th birthday. Franklin says, "Of the three presents for the printer's family . . . , none could touch the excellence of this" one. It contains four children's stories by Wilde: "The Happy Prince," "The Star-Child," "The Selfish Giant," and "The Young King." All are morality tales extolling the virtues of selflessness, generosity, and consideration of others. They were apparently taken to heart by Hornby's young daughter: Rosamund Hornby Holland-Martin (1914-2001) was chairman of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children for 20 years, and served the organization devotedly for half a century. In honor of her charitable works, she was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1983.
