      He writes to Mr. Schellens. "Life is so busy now with all kinds of things to bother, advice and visitors, one wished to live on an uninhabited island with a lovely climate....making art for the glory of God alone...With my painful leg I'm teased all the days by people with their troubles...God wants it and my works get more and more deepened, and I am very busy just for Him...All those reproductions and photos are nothing compared to the original drawing. Such a work cannot be reproduced properly, unless such a reproduction was made in Berlin before the war...The Dutch reproductions these days are rubbish. This summer (August) I have made 3 nice drawings...Willem Dreesman from Amsterdam has...many of my great 'Pilgrim,' and he bought the other day at Kleykamp that large [one] with green grapes...I have just drawn a 'spicy' Christ in colors...and now Dreesman gets it. Everybody loves it. I have had it photographed, but such a cold photo is nothing compared to the drawing in colors...You should see it before it goes on tour...I would like to draw your children...You ask me how much time it takes. I have to have the child pose for me at least 4 or 5 times...each sitting lasts 1 1/2 to 2 hours...." He signs, "Jan Toorop."

      An exceptionally fine and complete set of the <i>Magisterium</i> offered here together with Lana's <i>Prodromo</i> - both works fine copies from the distinguished Riccati library. The <i>Magisterium</i> is hardly ever found complete or without defects as here; Macclesfield copy was lacking several quires; Honeyman copy with large hole in one leaf, tears to several quires, worn and repaired; Goldschmidt catalogue from 1924 (lacking a plate).<br/><br/> The three folio volumes of the <i>Magisterium</i> constitute a massive and important encyclopedia of natural philosophy by one of the leading Jesuit scientists of the seventeenth century. Lana Terzi's celebrated <i>Prodromo</i>, in which his design for an air-ship is published, was intended as a 'portico' to this work, which was originally planned to contain nine volumes. A myriad of subjects experiments, and machines are described, including the pendulum, perpetual motion, problems of motion and percussion, hydraulics, elasticity, alchemical and chemical experiments, distillation, the vacuum, sound and acoustics, electricity and magnetism, meteorology - indeed as stated in the Libri sale catalogue, 'it would require an explanatory volume to give an idea of this work'. <br/><br/> The <i>Prodromo</i> is an important work in the history of aeronautics. In it Lana Terzi presented several technological innovations, of which the best known is his proposal for a 'flying boat:' to be airborne by four spheres of thin copper from which air had been exhausted. Although the vehicle was never tested, and would have proved unworkable, since the copper would not have been able to withstand the atmospheric pressure, Lana Terzi's reasoning was correct. In surmising that a vessel containing a semi-vacuum would weigh less than the surrounding air and would consequently become buoyant, Lana Terzi formulated the earliest concept of flight based on aerostatic principles. "While Lana apparently originated the method of reducing air density in a vessel by heating it, the implications of this phenomenon in relation to flight were not fully understood until the advent of the Montgolfier brothers a century later" (Norman).. Mit Widmung der Autoren an: «Monsieur Olyff, Directeur Général du Ministère des Colonies...» André Citroën war immer an neuen Erfindungen und technischen Lösungen interessiert, insbesondere dann, wenn er diese in die Produktion seiner Automobile einfließen lassen konnte. 1920 lernte er Adolphe Kégresse kennen, den genialen Erfinder des Raupenantriebes. Kégresse hatte sich die Raupenbänder aus Hartgummiglieder bereits 1913 in Frankreich patentieren lassen. Kégresse, der als Mechaniker in der Autowerkstatt des russischen Zaren Nikolaus II. beschäftigt war, wurde zu Beginn des ersten Weltkrieges zum Pionieroffizier des Zaren berufen. Während des ersten Weltkrieges wurden mit Hilfe Kégresses zahlreiche Fahrzeuge mit Raupenantrieb produziert. Hierdurch waren diese äußerst geländegängig, denn es hatte sich schnell herausgestellt, das radgetriebene Fahrzeuge auf Schnee und auf morastigem Untergrund schnell an ihre Grenzen stießen. Nach dem Krieg und dem Zusammenbruch des Zarenreiches flüchtete Kégresse vor den Wirren der russischen Revolution nach Frankreich - mittellos und verarmt. Einzig das Patent für den Raupenantrieb war ihm geblieben. Nachdem André Citroën sich das Raupenketten-Prinzip von Adolphe Kégresse hatte präsentieren lassen, gab er den Auftrag, einige Citroën-Fahrzeuge entsprechend den Vorgaben Kégresses auszurüsten. Schon wenige Wochen später waren drei Citroën Typ A-Fahrzeuge mit dem Raupenantrieb fertiggestellt. André Citroën wohnte den ersten Demonstrationsfahrten in der Nähe von Saint-Denis persönlich bei und war sofort von diesem Antrieb überzeugt. Noch am gleichen Tag erwarb er das Patent und die exklusiven Nutzungsrechte von Adolphe Kégresse, um es für seine Fahrzeuge nutzen zu können. Er meldete ein entsprechendes Patent unter dem Namen Citroën-Kégresse-Hinstin an und gründete innerhalb der Firma eine eigene Abteilung für diese Autochenilles genannten Fahrzeuge. André Citroën hatte sich schon einige Zeit damit befasst, geländegängige Fahrzeuge zu bauen. Die Panzer des ersten Weltkrieges erwiesen sich als zu schwerfällig und nicht brauchbar. Mit dem Kégresse-Raupenantrieb war die optimale Lösung gefunden, um sehr geländegängige Fahrzeuge bauen zu können, welche gleichzeitig sehr wendig und schnell waren (ca. 40-45 km/h). Ende 1922 verwirklicht André Citroën seinen Traum von der Durchquerung der Sahara mit dem Automobil. Der Kégresse-Raupenantrieb wurde zwischenzeitlich weiter entwickelt und an das aktuelle Modell vom Typ B2 10 HP angepasst. Unter der Leitung von Georges-Marie Haardt und Louis Audouin-Dubreuil brechen am 17. Dezember 1922 zehn Männer mit fünf Fahrzeugen zu dieser Expedition auf. Start ist in Touggourt in Algerien, Ziel ist Timbuktu in Sudan. Die Fahrzeuge unterscheiden sich von den Serienfahrzeugen durch eine spezielle Karosserie. Auf den Fahrzeugen werden in mehreren Koffern Werkzeug und Ersatzteile, Biwak-Ausrüstung und Arzneimittel mitgeführt. Auch drei Maschinengewehre und Munition befinden sich an Bord. Nach 21 Tagen und 3.500 km durch schier endloser Sandwüste erreicht die Karawane am 7. Januar 1923 wohlbehalten das Ziel. Georges-Marie Haardt und Louis Audouin-Dubreuil setzen André Citroën per Telegramm über den Erfolg in Kenntnis. Am 1. Februar brechen die Männer zur Rückfahrt auf. Am 6. März 1923 erreichen sie Touggourt - wieder ohne nennenswerte Probleme.

      Milan: Verzocchi, 1924.. An unusual trade catalogue for V&D, producers of high quality English firebricks in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The company was owned by Verzocchi a wealthy Italian industrialist who in the 1920s' began commissioning works of art by the most respected Italian illustrators and artists of the day. A condition of his patronage (and apparently appearance in this catalogue) was that a "V & D" logo brick should feature somewhere in the work. Verzocchi established a private-press to produce the catalogue. Works by Baldassini, Cisari, De Carolis, Depero, Dudovich, Marussig, Miti Zanetti, Nizzoli, Parmeggiani, Sinopico, Stroppa and Zampini, among others, are included in high quality reproductions each tissue guarded. The tissue pages contain faint descriptions (in Italian) of the specifications of the firebricks produced. There is a two page introduction by the author (in English) and 32 plates. The book is octavo, in quality "card" covers.The contents are unmarked. The binding is tight, the front endpaper has three rust spots presumably from staples hidden below. The covers have the odd mark, slight creasing to the oversize edges, one small nick and a little rubbing to the bottom of the spine. Overall, this is a super copy of a scarce item.

First edition, first printing, second issue with the half-title in the second state; in second issue dustwrapper with variant ads on the rear panel (copies of the first printing of the first edition were so altered very early in the distribution process, possibly even before the book was issued, as the additional books added to the advertising were issued at approximately the same time as this title. Copies of the first issue with all points are rare). Modest foxing to the foredge, and some slight rubbing to the boards, else about fine in very good or better dustwrapper with faint splash marks on the spine, a small, faint stain on the front panel, and very small nicks and tears at the spine ends. The author's second novel, a major and surprise bestseller, about an adolescent girl who falls in love with an older composer, who becomes her guardian when he marries her haughty cousin, who in turn is suffused with jealousy over the close relationship between the girl and her husband. Adapted by the author (along with Basil Dean) into a successful play, and filmed at least four times, among them: in 1928 directed by Adrian Brunel and Basil Dean, and featuring Ivor Novello, Mabel Poulton, and Elsa Lancaster; in 1933, again directed by Dean, with Victoria Hopper and Brian Aherne; and probably most memorably in 1943 directed by Edmund Goulding, and featuring Charles Boyer and Joan Fontaine (who was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award). Any issue of the first edition is rare in jacket. .

Binding and jacket are both second issue (the first issue is quite rare, issued only in small quantities to reviewers prior to publication). Near Fine in a bright, Very Good or better dust jacket. Faint offsetting to the endpapers; jacket is lightly chipped at the corners and spine ends, modestly toned at the spine panel, and has a tiny bruise to the front panel and a small cellotape repair at the heel. Adapted to the stage early in the twentieth century, then filmed several times, most notably in 1943 in a version directed by Edmund Goulding and starring Charles Boyer and Joan Fontaine. Uncommon in jacket, and extremely scarce even in the second issue.

Competently rebacked in black cloth, corners bruised, some scattered foxing and general thumbing and use, two leaves have short, closed tears at the fore- edge, but overall, a sound and reasonably good copy. First edition. With Graves's presentation inscription in the month of publication: "John Crowe Ransom from Robert Graves: in all friendship. May 28th 1924." Graves had two poems accepted for publication in the December 1922 issue of THE FUGITIVE, of which Ransom was co-editor. The two poets embarked on a path of mutual admiration and assistance, Ransom asking if he might dedicate a book to Graves ("...because you represent as I see it the best tendency extant in modern poetry"), and Graves seeking a British publisher for Ransom's work, a task he completed with the editing of GRACE AFTER MEAT, to which Graves also contributed an introduction. As a side note, Ransom was instrumental in forwarding Graves' interest in, and acquaintance with, Laura Riding, who was then publishing in THE FUGITIVE and had recently been making life complicated for certain members of the Vanderbilt circle. He sent to Graves some of her unpublished verse, and described her as "brilliant," and in a fine example of understated diplomacy, as "very fine personally, but very intense for company." WOOLMER 46. Printed cover, designed by Georg Salter, is somewhat faded but spine label is intact with no chipping or soiling, with little fading. Striated paper-covered boards suggests wood-veneer covered with thick brush strokes by an amateur furniture-maker. No Dust Jacket. Cover protected by mylar sleeve. Binding is tight. Text block and interior pages are clean and unmarked.*** This was the last work Kafka saw to press in his lifetime and published in the year of his death. He worked on correcting proofs of the book as he was dying. About 3,000 copies printed, though the files of Die Schmiede which published mainly Jews and Zionists was eradicated by the Nazis, unusual for them as German methodicalness &ndash; "Vorsprung durch Technik". (For example, retaining the Altneu Synagogue of Prague, as well as so many religious and cultural relics in the adjoining museum, was based on the idea of exhibiting the relics of an extinct race.) A very fine letter to an unnamed art dealer detailing titles & prices for 11 prints offered on consignment until July 15th, 1924, with good content: " Your customer is practically correct. The print "Love in the Woods" is prepared not by a dry point but by a very light etching, as was nearly always the custom in France since the 18th century. It is the case with about one quarter of my engravings. It depends on the subject matter and of the treatment" Signed & dated, J. E. Laboureur. "Founder in 1923 of the Société des Peintres Graveurs Indépendants, friend to avant-garde poet Guillaume Apollinaire and painter Marie Laurencin, the artist Jean-Émile Laboureur found inspiration in sources ranging from Hellenistic vase painting to Nabis artists such as Bonnard, Vuillard and Vallotton. Laboureur was born in Nantes, France in 1877. He arrived in Paris in 1895 to study at the Faculty of Law. Quickly dissatisfied in that pursuit, he began to frequent the Academie Julian, a prestigious Parisian art academy. Laboureur was soon introduced to the eminent wood engraver Auguste Lepère, and decided to devote himself to the study of printmaking. While Lepère imparted technical expertise, artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, with whom Laboureur became acquainted in 1896, encouraged his sense of humor and irony, bringing a cosmopolitan flair to his work. Between 1899 and 1910, Laboureur traveled extensively. He cultivated a broad historical knowledge of engraving in Germany and Italy. In Greece, he was greatly inspired by the elegance of Classical vase painting. He returned to Paris in 1910, as Picasso and Braque were ushering in Cubism. Building on this analytical, geometric style with the knowledge and inspiration acquired during his travels, Laboureur developed a decorative style distinctly his own. By the end of World War I, Laboureur had gained a new audience with his success in book design and illustration. His service in the war had led him to experiment with engraving on metal, which required neither the acid baths of etching nor the bulky equipment of wood engraving. Gradually his style became more fluid, moving away from the rigid properties of Cubism. Displaying what contemporary poet and friend Max Jacob described as "chic" and "grand classical elegance," Laboureur was widely collected by Americans as well as Europeans." - IFPDA.       Oxford: Printed for the Wren Society at the University Press, 1924-43.. 20 volumes. Original cloth backed printed boards, spines with black lettering. Complete with 18 frontispieces and 772 numbered plates, some with more than one subject to a page, mostly single page, the others double page or folding, in addition to this volume XV with 104 pp. of photographic illustrations and volumes II and VI with 7 double sided leaves of illustrations. Some occasional light wear, but a very good set overall. In their own words: "The object and work of the Wren Society has been the elucidation of the career and achievements of the great architect, by searching out and publishing original drawings, documents and facts of proved authenticity relating to his life and works". The compilers of this magnificent body of work drew upon numerous sources in its creation, most notably from the collections in All Souls, Oxford, the St. Paul's Library, the Pepys Library and the Soane Collection. This set comprises the complete run of the work and bears the ownership inscription of one Frank J. Potter in the first volume, one of the original subscriber's and a Fellow of the R.I.B.A. Indeed, the set was only issued to subscribers, of whom 289 are listed at the rear of the final volume, excluding those listed in memoriam.

C:a 25 × 16,5 cm vardera. Ramade tillsammans i en djup lådliknande ram. Proveniens: Linnea Braun. Carl Kylberg tyckte om att rita och skriva för barn och utgav flera barnböcker. Kalle och Ulla och Sprätten utkom 1924 hos Bonniers som i sin första entusiasm även föreslog konstnären andra barnboksprojekt. Men Kalle och Ulla och Sprätten sålde illa och Kylbergs nästa bok, Lejonet Leo, som tillkom samma år, refuserades och utgavs först senare.. Boken handlar om hur Kalle, Ulla och "en lustig sprätt, klädd i krage och manschett" går på cirkus tillsammans. På vägen dit möter de flera udda figurer - greve Finemang, en prinsessa, en fattig karl och en indian - och på cirkusen bl. a. en pajas, en dansös, en tiger och en boxare:Sen sa Sprätten bara 'Dimp!'och på golvet som en klimpHela boxaren han dampUtan minsta strid och kamp.Föreliggande skisser återger ett centralt uppslag i boken. På väg mot cirkusen ser Kalle, Ulla och Sprätten en fattig karl på en bänk. Han är visserligen klädd i hemska trasor men approcheras ändå av Sprätten, som ber att få göra honom glad. Bilderna visar Sprätten bjuda allesammans på glass och lemonad, varefter han och barnen fortsätter sin promenad till cirkusen.       Albert & Charles Boni New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1924. First Edition. cloth. About Fine, lacking a dustwrapper. Blue cloth. Illustrated with drawings. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper nearly filling the page: "To/J.C. Calhoun/a Friend/from/Will Rogers/(almost an author)/New York. Nov 15, 24." Rogers was born in Indian Territory in 1879 and had some Native American blood in his veins. He began in vaudeville and moved on to motion pictures, a career that was cut short when he died in a small plane crash in 1935 near Point Barrow, Alaska. Perhaps he was best known, however, for his syndicated newspaper column which had such a massive following that the proposition that he run for President was once seriously advanced. His saying, "All I know is what I read in the newspapers," became a popular catchword of the times. Books signed or inscribed by this most popular of American humorists, especially with such a fine inscription, are uncommon.

The story is about a little girl who meets all manner of strange gnomes, fairies and creatures after she goes to sleep at night. Illustrated by Gaze with 12 beautiful color plates plus many full and partial page fanciful line illustrations. Gaze was a New Zealand artist who "dominated the fairy genre in Australian children's books " after Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (See Muir History of Australian Children's Book Illus. p.77).
