The Quantum Theory of Radiation in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, XLVII, 6th Series, January ? June 1924, pp. 785-802

First edition of Bohr, Kramers, and Slater's renunciation of the classical form of causality in favor of a purely statistical description.  "After Kramers had succeeded in extending the scope of the correspondence argument to the theory of optical dispersion "thus rounding off a treatment of the interaction of atomic systems with radiation that accounted for all emission, absorption, and scattering processes" Bohr ventured to propose a systematic formulation of the whole theory, in which what he called the virtual character of the classical model was emphasized. In this he was aided by Kramers and a young American visitor, J. C. Slater, and the new theory was published in 1924 under the authorship of all three. As said, the most striking feature of this remarkable paper, as said, was the renunciation of the classical form of causality in favor of a purely statistical description. Even the distribution of energy and momentum between the radiation field and the "virtual oscillators" constituting the atomic systems was assumed to be statistical, the conservation laws being fulfilled only on the average. This was going too far: the paper was hardly in print before A. H. Compton and A. W. Simon had established by direct experiment the strict conservation of energy and momentum in an individual process of interaction between atom and radiation. Nevertheless, this short-lived attempt exerted a profound influence on the course of events; what remained after its failure was the conviction that the classical mode of description of the atomic processes had to be entirely relinquished." (DSB). ALSO present is de Broglie's "A Tentative Theory of Light Quanta," the first edition of the first English edition of three papers by Louis de Broglie, heralding a new era in physics -- the birth of quantum mechanics. The English translation is a translation of de Broglie?s three ?Notes? published in Comptes Rendus in September and October 1923.  The English edition includes an addition to the three papers and a postscript ? de Broglie provides a generalization of the theory that is consistent with the special theory of relativity.  This addition was not published in Comptes.  ?Louis de Broglie's conception of the wave?particle duality in 1923 opened up new experimental possibilities, initiating the era of modern quantum mechanics? (Medicus, Heinrich A., ?Fifty years of matter waves?, Physics Today, Volume 27, Issue 2). De Broglie?s ?greatest talent was a gift for spotting the obvious ? or rather, for spotting what would eventually become obvious to everyone else.  He thought deeply about the mysterious wave-particle duality that had been pointed out by Einstein as early as 1909, and arrived at a question that must have seemed almost childish at the time: if electromagnetic waves are also particles, then might not particles of seemingly solid matter (such as electrons) be somehow also waves?  If this were so, then beams of electrons would have a wavelength and a frequency just like light, and this would offer a ready explanation of Bohr?s quantization conditions: an electron in its orbit about the nucleus would be like a standing wave, such as the wave in a plucked guitar string, and only an integral number of wavelengths could fit into an orbit.  This very simple insight could have been seen (but was not) by anyone from about 1913 onwards. CONDITION & DETAILS: Entire volume offered.  Ex-libris with armorial bookplate on pastedown, small stamp on the rear of the title page.  The volume houses 8 plates.  Bound in three quarter calf over cloth with 5 gilt-tooled raised bands at the spine.  Gilt-lettered red and black morocco spine labels.  Minor rubbing and scuffing at the edges and on the spine.  The front board is starting to loosen a bit but is still holding tight and solid.  Bright and very clean throughout.

        Autographed Letter - 2 Pages

n.p. [Paris]: Laboureur, 1924, 1924 Jean-Émile Laboureur, [French Painter, 1877-1947]. 2 page A.L.S., June 3rd, 1924. n.p. [Paris]. A very fine letter to an unnamed art dealer detailing titles & prices for 11 prints offered on consignment until July 15th, 1924, with good content: " Your customer is practically correct. The print "Love in the Woods" is prepared not by a dry point but by a very light etching, as was nearly always the custom in France since the 18th century. It is the case with about one quarter of my engravings. It depends on the subject matter and of the treatment" Signed & dated, J. E. Laboureur. "Founder in 1923 of the Société des Peintres Graveurs Indépendants, friend to avant-garde poet Guillaume Apollinaire and painter Marie Laurencin, the artist Jean-Émile Laboureur found inspiration in sources ranging from Hellenistic vase painting to Nabis artists such as Bonnard, Vuillard and Vallotton. Laboureur was born in Nantes, France in 1877. He arrived in Paris in 1895 to study at the Faculty of Law. Quickly dissatisfied in that pursuit, he began to frequent the Academie Julian, a prestigious Parisian art academy. Laboureur was soon introduced to the eminent wood engraver Auguste Lepère, and decided to devote himself to the study of printmaking. While Lepère imparted technical expertise, artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, with whom Laboureur became acquainted in 1896, encouraged his sense of humor and irony, bringing a cosmopolitan flair to his work. Between 1899 and 1910, Laboureur traveled extensively. He cultivated a broad historical knowledge of engraving in Germany and Italy. In Greece, he was greatly inspired by the elegance of Classical vase painting. He returned to Paris in 1910, as Picasso and Braque were ushering in Cubism. Building on this analytical, geometric style with the knowledge and inspiration acquired during his travels, Laboureur developed a decorative style distinctly his own. By the end of World War I, Laboureur had gained a new audience with his success in book design and illustration. His service in the war had led him to experiment with engraving on metal, which required neither the acid baths of etching nor the bulky equipment of wood engraving. Gradually his style became more fluid, moving away from the rigid properties of Cubism. Displaying what contemporary poet and friend Max Jacob described as "chic" and "grand classical elegance," Laboureur was widely collected by Americans as well as Europeans." - IFPDA.
