The Ocean of Story being C.H. Tawney's Translation of Somadeva's Katha Sarit Sagara (or Ocean of Streams of Story).

Privately printed from subscribers only by Chas. J. Sawyer, London., 1924. First edition. Edited with an Introduction, Fresh Explanatory Notes and Terminal Essay, by N.M. Penzer. Foreword by Charles Carnac Temple. Royal octavo. Ten volumes. One of 1500 numbered sets. Full black gilt decorated buckram. Top edges gilt. Gilt endpapers. An 11th-century collection of Indian legends, fairy tales and folk tales as retold, in Sanskrit, by a Shaiva monk named Somadeva who took much of his material from earlier sources. The work was originally in verse but is here rendered in prose. It remains the only complete edition in English. The first Tawney translation appeared in 1880-4 but this edition has been greatly expanded. A monumental work, which bears a striking resemblance to European mediaeval fairy tales, it served as a model for Salman Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories (1990). Cloth at spine of one of the volumes just a little bubbled. Some light spotting of prelims and edges. A very good set indeed.

T. Kirtley'). A companion in format to the earlier \i Fauns and Ladies , John Kirtley later stated that 'both books were based on the 1919 Riccardi edition of Rupert Brooke's poems' [Arnold, p. 32]. The plates are numbered, with the frontispiece signed and others initialled in pencil by Norman Lindsay.         Geomeetriline inimene : V. kogu värsse (Geometrical man : Fifth verse collection)

Propeller, Tartu 1924 - Estonian language. Enlarged format. Octavo 17 x 25 cm. Weight 320 gr. Wrappers, 109 [3] pp. The Book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Minor rubbing to the bottom edge of the cover, very small creaser across bottom right corner of front cover; otherwise perfect condition. Current work is the most substantial example of the expression of the characteristics of modernism and avant-gardism in Estonian literature of the 1920s. The publication became a connecting link between avant-garde art and literature, formulating the aspirations of new art and realising form innovation in poetry on the basis of the main principles of cubism, futurism, constructivism, in which author’s text briliantly complemented by artist’s amazing illustrations. The book includes five cycles of poems by Barbarus “Geometrical Man”, “Human Space”, “Human Time”, “Living Monuments” and “Paris”. Verses connect the philosophical and social ideas of constructivism with simultaniest techniques, presented with futurist-inclined typography. The central place in these collections is given to the big city, as a mean of discovering the world and important sign in the world perception of the Estonian people. It is an euphoric attitude, incited by the establishment of the independent state, a sense of solitude and equality with other peoples and countries. Estonia seemed to enter Europe, the world of the 1920s was open to the new Estonian state, and it was to this that Estonian poetry aspired. Author creates the urban vocabulary (machines, trains, aeroplanes) and uses innovative visual devices that contrast different columns and different fonts to mark the simultaneous world. In adition to the great cover design in best avant-garde traditions, the book decorated with fifteen half-page and one full- page woodcut by Vahtra, all the illustrations are geometric abstractions mostly of human and city. It was artists’s masterful graphic experiment using cubist- constructivist technique. Johannes Barbarus (pseud. of Johannes Vares) (1890-1946) was Estonian greatest modernist poet and radical politician. His style of verses varied greatly during his career as a poet. His early works followed the trends of French expressionism and cubism, later verse took more realistic turn. The modernist poetry of Barbarus in the 1920s constitutes as the most artistically important part of his works and he is an indispensable author on the Estonian field of poetry of that time. Jaan Vahtra (1882–1947) is considered Estonia's most important avant-garde artist. Among all his other achievements he recognized as the man who brought Cubism to Estonia. Most of all valued according to outstanding works in the field of graphics. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe.

Selected Papers on Anthropology, Travel & Exploration. Now edited with an Introduction and Occasional Notes by N.M. Penzer.

London: A.M. Philpot Ltd., 1924. London:: A.M. Philpot Ltd., 1924., 1924. 8vo. 240 pp. Half-title, index; foxed. Original full tan gilt-stamped bevelled buckram, t.e.g. LIMITED EDITION of 100 copies printed on handmade paper, each hand-numbered (#63). This work supplements Norman Penzer’s broadly reaching bibliography of the works of Sir Richard Francis Burton. Many readers found that the bibliography referenced items so rare that they were unable to obtain copies. Penzer, recognizing this need, selected these papers both for their rarity and for their being representative of Burton’s character. Thereby Penzer interjects comments relative to each of these ‘chapters’ – adding to his bibliographic narrative. Contents: Early Days in Sind; Guide-Book to Mecca; A Trip to Harar; Notes on Scalping; A Day Amongst the Fans; Notes on the Dahoman; Chapters from Travels; Notes on Rome; Spiritualism in Eastern Lands; and his study of Italian Egyptologist Giovanni Battista Belzoni.

        Mark Twain's Autobiography [WITH SLIPCASE]

New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1924. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. 755 pp. Two-volume set with dust jackets and scarce slipcase. First edition, first printing of Mark Twain's famous autobiography which has very recently been re-released with copious notes; although many believe Mark Twain wished his autobiography to not be published until 100 years after his death, his friend and literary executor at the time, Albert Bigelow Paine, clearly felt differently as this set was initially published in 1924, only 14 years after his death. It was felt this was sufficient time to honour his actual request that they not be published until "long after" his death. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in navy blue cloth, facsimile signature in gilt on the front boards, gilt lettering on the spines, top edges gilt, frontispiece in each volume a different sepia-toned photogravure of Twain, title pages in red and black; octavo size (approximately 9.25" tall), pagination: Volume I, (i)-xvi, (1)-368; Volume II, (i-iv), 1-365, followed by 2 pages of publisher's ads. Dust jackets are of light blue with midnight blue lettering, the frontispiece from Volume I serving on both jackets as an illustration on the front, publisher's ad on the back panel for "Important Biographies", summary of book on front flap, publisher's ad on back flap. Slipcase also covered in light blue paper, both sides mirror the front of the dustjackets. ***CONDITION: Both volumes are near fine, with strong, square text blocks, solid hinges, straight corners with a hint of rubbing (if any), and the interiors are clean and bright; there is a slight amount of rubbing to the head and tail of the spines and some foxing to the gutter margins of the endpapers. The fragile dust jackets, which we paired to the books from another set, are good only with substantial wear and some sunning; Volume I is missing the top half of the spine and the back panel is detached from the remainder of the spine; the jacket for Volume II is missing a chip out of the head of the spine. The slipcase is good plus, with all pieces being present; there is overall wear and some soiling, and some of the seams are beginning to split. ***CITATION: BAL #3537; on copyright page: "First Edition" with code letters "H - Y", State A with Vol. 1 frontispiece, printed tissue inserted and Vol. 2, two pages of advertisements followed by a blank leaf. ***POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size and weight of this work additional postage may apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international addresses, please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
