Nemuno rankose (In the Niemen's Embrace) [Poetry collection]

"Varpo" bendroves leidinys, Kaunas ("Bell" Publishing Company, Kaunas) 1924 - Lithuanian language. Octavo 13 x 18 cm. Weight 85 gr. Wrappers, 78 [1] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Partially damaged and repaired spine, but the cover boards are firmly attached, slight soiling on the cover, fly-leaf and title; internally occasional fingerprints and three small closed tears on different leaves. Notable avant-garde constructivist cover design by Lithuanian artist Juozas Petrenas, who became better known as an avant-garde poet than a painter. He created the design of the four issues of "Keturi vejai" group (Four Winds) and was responsible for several covers of avant-garde books and for the layout of books published by members of the Four Winds. Present book is first edition (was re-edited in 1967) of the third poetry book by the young avant-garde author. Distinctive individual style verses combine the traditions of integral lyricism with urban themes and a dynamic expressiveness. The most important lyric motifs are nature, love, village and city. His poetic language is young and energetic, main protagonist - the modern man, his troubles and worries, dreams and sadnesses. For example, in the avant-garde poem Pieniška daina (The Milky Song) idealistic desire for happiness turns into desire to own a cow who provides food for the body and soul ("joy in the body, nirvana in the soul"). In this verse by using allusions that involve references to the Eastern culture, author extends the space of Lithuanian motives and wittily reinterprets them according to the avant-garde code, the avant-garde image combines with narrative of everyday life. In the verses the energetic gesture is softened by the gentle breeze of the wind, and vice versa - the decorative ornamental image is devastating like a childish joke. Juozas Tysliava (1902-1961) - avant-garde poet and journalist of the early twentieth century with strong Futurist orientation, who is considered as Lithuanian Mayakovski. A member of the Four Winds, a Lithuanian cult avant-garde group. In 1925 he went to Paris and joined an international modernist group, there in 1928 published three issues of multi-language journal Muba. After 1932 he emigrated in USA.       E. P. Dutton & Company 1924 - 8vo, pp. 396. The corners are bumped and the cloth is a bit soiled. Hinges tight and endpapers clean - a good plus copy. No dust jacket. Vance (1879-1933) was an American novelist best known for his character Michael Lanyard, aka "The Lone Wolf", who was featured in eight books and 24 films between 1917 and 1949. Vance - a mystery writer - died a mysterious death. Shortly after separating from his wife of 35 years, he was found dead in his apartment, sitting in a partially burnt armchair - only the upper half of which had caught fire. He was known to be a heavy smoker, and had a high alcohol content in his body. One theory of how the fire started was spontaneous combustion of Vance's body, but neither this theory, nor any other, was conclusive in establishing how the fire started. This is a scarce title with a mysterious printing history. It is usually thought that the first printing appeared in January, 1925, with at least four more printings that year. However, prior to 1929, Dutton had no definate scheme to identify first editions, although Zempel & Verkler quotes a 1928 publisher's statement that: "Recently, a copyright notice behind a title-page, on which nothing occurs but that, is an indication it is a first." Our copy states that the book is "Copyright, 1923-1924". The list of titles, facing the title page, shows 23 titles, although by 1925 Vance (a prolific writer) was known to have published 25 titles. Our research indicates that this title was serialized from October, 1923, to January, 1924, in a women's magazine, and this may explain the curious copyright notice. It is, therefore, almost certain that our copy precedes one with a copyright notice dated 1925, and is thus the true first edition.         The Works.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1924. 28 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by Stikeman & Co. in blue half morocco, titles and floral decoration to spines gilt, two raised bands, blue cloth boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Bookplate to front pastedowns, 18 volumes expertly rebacked still an excellent set beautifully bound. The Atlantic Edition, limited to 1050 numbered sets signed by the author of which this is number 618. This is the best edition by a margin of the works of H. G. Wells. Scribners offered the set in regular cloth bindings but also as here in a spectacular binding done by the best American binders of their day. The cost presumably was prohibitive and very few sets seem to have been so bound.

Unknown Artist, n. d. (ca 1924)., N. P. - Original 11 1/2" x 15" colorful image, tastefully matted to 18 1/2" x 22" size. Included with the artwork is a copy of the actual book written by Walter Tyrer and titled The Clue Of The Pin-Up Girl and is Sexton Blake Library publication number 351, a digest-size paperback original. Sexton Blake is a fictional character, a detective who has been featured in many British comic strips, novels and dramatic productions since 1893. Sexton Blake adventures were featured in a wide variety of British and international publications (in many languages) from 1893 to 1978, comprising more than 4,000 stories by some 200 different authors. Blake was also the hero of numerous silent and sound movies, radio serials, and a 1960s ITV television series. The first issue of The Sexton Blake Library was published on 20 September 1915, entitled "The Yellow Tiger" and written by G.H. Teed. Sexton Blake was known as "The Poor Man's Sherlock Holmes," and many of the Sexton Blake stories rival the Sherlock Holmes stories in their quality, yet Holmes has remained in the public eye while Blake has been allowed to slip into obscurity by all except for a few devotees. This is a fine, bright piece of original artwork, suitable to be framed. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Privately printed from subscribers only by Chas. J. Sawyer, London., 1924. First edition. Edited with an Introduction, Fresh Explanatory Notes and Terminal Essay, by N.M. Penzer. Foreword by Charles Carnac Temple. Royal octavo. Ten volumes. One of 1500 numbered sets. Full black gilt decorated buckram. Top edges gilt. Gilt endpapers. An 11th-century collection of Indian legends, fairy tales and folk tales as retold, in Sanskrit, by a Shaiva monk named Somadeva who took much of his material from earlier sources. The first Tawney translation appeared in 1880-4 but this edition has been greatly expanded. A monumental work, which bears a striking resemblance to European mediaeval fairy tales, it served as a model for Salman Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories (1990). Cloth at spine of one of the volumes just a little bubbled. Some light spotting of prelims and edges. A very good set indeed.

A substantial number of these (perhaps two thirds or more) were destroyed in a fire resulting in a much smaller edition than originally intended' [Arnold p. 168]. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Geomeetriline inimene : V. kogu värsse (Geometrical man : Fifth verse collection)

Propeller, Tartu 1924 - Estonian language. Enlarged format. Octavo 17 x 25 cm. Weight 320 gr. Wrappers, 109 [3] pp. The Book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Minor rubbing to the bottom edge of the cover, very small creaser across bottom right corner of front cover; otherwise perfect condition. Current work is the most substantial example of the expression of the characteristics of modernism and avant-gardism in Estonian literature of the 1920s. The publication became a connecting link between avant-garde art and literature, formulating the aspirations of new art and realising form innovation in poetry on the basis of the main principles of cubism, futurism, constructivism, in which author’s text briliantly complemented by artist’s amazing illustrations. The book includes five cycles of poems by Barbarus “Geometrical Man”, “Human Space”, “Human Time”, “Living Monuments” and “Paris”. Verses connect the philosophical and social ideas of constructivism with simultaniest techniques, presented with futurist-inclined typography. The central place in these collections is given to the big city, as a mean of discovering the world and important sign in the world perception of the Estonian people. It is an euphoric attitude, incited by the establishment of the independent state, a sense of solitude and equality with other peoples and countries. Estonia seemed to enter Europe, the world of the 1920s was open to the new Estonian state, and it was to this that Estonian poetry aspired. Author creates the urban vocabulary (machines, trains, aeroplanes) and uses innovative visual devices that contrast different columns and different fonts to mark the simultaneous world. In adition to the great cover design in best avant-garde traditions, the book decorated with fifteen half-page and one full- page woodcut by Vahtra, all the illustrations are geometric abstractions mostly of human and city. It was artists’s masterful graphic experiment using cubist- constructivist technique. Johannes Barbarus (pseud. of Johannes Vares) (1890-1946) was Estonian greatest modernist poet and radical politician. His style of verses varied greatly during his career as a poet. His early works followed the trends of French expressionism and cubism, later verse took more realistic turn. The modernist poetry of Barbarus in the 1920s constitutes as the most artistically important part of his works and he is an indispensable author on the Estonian field of poetry of that time. Jaan Vahtra (1882–1947) is considered Estonia's most important avant-garde artist. Among all his other achievements he recognized as the man who brought Cubism to Estonia. Most of all valued according to outstanding works in the field of graphics. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe.

(Christie's, "Collection Daniel Filipacchi", première partie, n°26). BEL EXEMPLAIRE broché, conservé en PARFAIT ÉTAT. FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.
