Fairy Tales Illustrated by Kay Nielsen

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1924]. 4to, 197pp. With a tipped-in frontispiece and 11 color-plates with captioned tissues, and monochrome drawings throughout the text, many full-page. Full midnight blue crushed morocco extra, inset panel on upper cover with inlaid illustration in colored moroccos of a man carrying a child, backstrip gilt, gilt edges, a superb showcase binding by Bayntun c. 1960 that is very slightly faded (perhaps from being in a showcase?) Limited to 500 copies signed by Nielsen. Danish artist Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) was the son of the director of the Royal Danish Theater and after art school he was quickly recruited as a book illustrator; his Fairy Tales was delayed for a year so as not to compete with another version illustrated by Robinson. That edition is now little known whereas this version is one of the best known illustrated books of the century. He turned to stage design for the Danish State Theater and only illustrated three more books before moving to Hollywood where he designed sets for movies and acted in small walk-on parts. He died in California in 1957.

The Odyssey of Homer done into English Prose by S.H. Butcher and Andrew Lang with Twenty Plates in Colour after the Water-Colour Drawings of W. Russell Flint

London and Boston: Medici Society, 1924. Large 4to, xxviii, 315pp. With 20 tipped-in color plates. Sumptuously bound in half vellum and blue buckram, pale green morocco labels on backstrip, gilt top, slipcase. A very fine copy, unsigned but likely a Sangorski & Sutcliffe binding. Limited to 500 copies. A lovely book, printed on handmade paper, with Flint at his sensually erotic best illustrating this epic edition. The artwork was created in 1914 but not published until 1924 due to the Great War and subsequent events. By 1924 Flint was at the height of his fame and this book is regarded as one of his masterpieces.

        Détours *

NRF, Paris 28.8.1924.

A pencil notation of the the name is below the image to the left and across from this, to the bottom right of the image, is Phillips' signature (also in pencil). Image from the families stay in the English Countryside (Wylye) near the beginning of their stay in England in 1924-25. A warm and friendly image depicting a broad and beautiful valley. A soft patchwork of farmland lays softly across rolling hills broken up by clumps of yellow trees. The excellent quality of framing and pristine condition makes this print especially desirable. Walter Joseph Phillips (October 25, 1884 – July 5, 1963) was an English-born Canadian painter and woodcutter, acclaimed as one of Canada's most famous printmakers and for popularizing the colour woodcut in the style of the Japanese. His artistic career spanned from the 1900s through the 1940s, during which time his work was exhibited throughout North America and Great Britain. In 1940 he was asked to become a resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program- It's Walter Phillips Gallery, which focuses on contemporary art, is named after him. The Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta holds an extensive collection of Phillips works and a research archive..

Cully 1924.

New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1924. First Edition. cloth. About Fine, lacking a dustwrapper. Blue cloth. Illustrated with drawings. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper nearly filling the page: "To/J.C. Calhoun/a Friend/from/Will Rogers/(almost an author)/New York. Nov 15, 24." Rogers was born in Indian Territory in 1879 and had some Native American blood in his veins. He began in vaudeville and moved on to motion pictures, a career that was cut short when he died in a small plane crash in 1935 near Point Barrow, Alaska. Perhaps he was best known, however, for his syndicated newspaper column which had such a massive following that the proposition that he run for President was once seriously advanced. His saying, "All I know is what I read in the newspapers," became a popular catchword of the times. Books signed or inscribed by this most popular of American humorists, especially with such a fine inscription, are uncommon.

        THE DIARY

London: G. Bell and Sons Ltd, 1924. Hardcover. 187 x 121 mm (7 3/8 x 4 3/4"). Eight volumes bound in three. Transcribed by the late Rev. Mynors Bright, M.A., from the shorthand manuscript in the Pepysian Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge. Edited with additions by Henry B. Wheatley. FINE CONTEMPORARY TERRA COTTA CRUSHED MOROCCO BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE (signed on front turn-ins), double gilt fillet border on covers, upper covers with gilt insignia incorporating the initials "S P," crossed anchors, and looping ropes with Pepys' (misspelled) motto in Latin on a ribbon above it, raised bands, spines gilt in double-ruled compartments with central ornament of either a crown, a sailor's knot, an anchor, or crossed quills, turn-ins ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With frontispiece portrait of the author. Spines lightly and uniformly sunned toward pink, otherwise AN EXTREMELY PLEASING SET IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION inside and out. Pepys' diary is available in various editions (see, for example, items #140 and 169); the chief value of the present printing is that it is done on India paper, allowing the full substantial text to be contained in a very manageable space. And the compactness of this edition is here very much enhanced by the bindings, made with high quality morocco and expertly finished. (The Sangorski Latinist has, however, fallen short of perfection: Pepys chose as his personal motto "mens cujusque is est quisque," or "what a man's mind is, that is what he is," but here the first word is unfortunately spelled "mons," Latin for "mountain.").

Original maroon cloth lettered in black. First Edition of Forster's famous novel of India, in which the English community is portrayed as quick to condemn an Indian doctor accused of assaulting a young Englishwoman.~.Forster's most famous novel, and the last one he wrote. There was considerable criticism of his portraits of the English in India. Forster made a humane and liberal Englishman, Fielding, a rare exception and this was less than fair. But his diagnosis of the less than perfect relationship of the Indian to his Anglo-Saxon overlord as arising from insensitivity and arrogance on the one hand, and generations of endured rudeness and condescension on the other is accurate as a factor in politics, as many non-Englishmen can testify. Forster was frequently asked why he stopped writing novels [he lived 46 more years]: 'I have nothing more to say,' he replied. [CGEL]~This volume (without half-title, as issued) is in remarkably fine, bright condition. Usually maroon cloth spines become severely faded, but with this copy any such fading is all but imperceptible. Furthermore, this copy is signed by Forster on the title page, where he has stricken through his printed name and replaced it with his signed name. In addition to trade copies such as this, there were 200 signed copies in a different binding -- but signed trade copies, such as this one, are considerably scarcer. Kirkpatrick A10a; Modern Library 100 #25. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Constable & Co., 1924. Rare First Edition. Limited to 750 numbered copies only. Large 8vo, publishers original blue cloth lettered in gilt and stamped in blind, t.e.g. xii, 434 pp. A superior copy of this very scarce book, fine and bright and unusually well preserved, without wear or blemish. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE POEMS. The first publication of Melville’s collected poems and the first time that many appear in print. Appearing for the first time “Author’s note (on the use of expletives)” pg. 129, “Miscellaneous Poems” pp. 297-349, and “At the Hostelry” pp. 351-434. Between 1875 and 1920 Melville had fallen deep into obscurity. William P. Trent's A HISTORY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE, 1903, gives Melville but three pages out of 593, and Wendell and Greenough's A HISTORY OF LITERATURE IN AMERICA, 1904, gives him nothing at all. The author's star began to rise in 1921 with the publication of Weaver's biography. The first volume of the collected works was published the following year and did much to expand American awareness of Melville's art. It stands alone as a truly important edition with the inclusion of 'The Poems' and 'Billy Budd,' both of which were here published separately for the first time. ‘The Poems’ appears as Volume XVI of the Standard Edition set.

1924. The Later Adventures of the Swiss Family Robinson | The Final Adventures of the Swiss Family Robinson. [Together, two volumes.] Frontispiece [in each] by H. C. Murphy. New York: G. Howard Watt, 1924. Original maroon cloth with affixed front cover color illustration. First American Editions. Just as Verne wrote a sequel to Edgar Allan Poe's NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM with his AN ANTARCTIC MYSTERY (1897), so too did he write, three years later, SECONDE PATRIE (SECOND FATHERLAND) as a sequel to Johann Wyss's THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON. (In Verne's Preface to the original French edition, he noted that THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON and ROBINSON CRUSOE were his two favorite boyhood stories.)~It would be almost a quarter-century after the original 1900 French edition before this title came out in English -- in these two volumes, first in 1923 by Sampson Low of London, then a year later by G. Howard Watt of New York (as here). During the delay in publishing this in English, which included the Great War, the era of the magnificent pictorial trade binding had unfortunately come to an end.~These are fine, clean copies. Octavo (19.5cm); black cloth boards, lettered in yellow on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 322pp. A straight, tight copy, moderately foxed on prelims and page edges, scattered faint foxing to text; solidly Very Good. In original dustwrapper, price-clipped and with old clear tape reinforcements verso, still very nicely preserved with just mild edgewear and mild toning at flap-folds; Near Fine. & & The First American edition of Forster's final work of fiction. A Passage To India was Forster's most popular novel in his lifetime and, thanks to the 1984 film adaptation by David Lean, it remains his best-known work. The American edition is uncommon, and notably scarce in dustwrapper; this a very presentable copy. CONNOLLY 100.

The Odyssey of Homer done into English Prose by S.H. Butcher and Andrew Lang with Twenty Plates in Colour after the Water-Colour Drawings of W. Russell Flint.

      - London and Boston: Medici Society, 1924. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
