        The World Crisis, full set of 6 British first editions, mixed printings

      London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1924. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a unique position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front; Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty until 1915 and then, after bearing blame for the Dardanelles tragedy, served as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Many consider the British edition, with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page, aesthetically superior the U.S. Offered here is a full set of all six British first editions, mixed printings. This set is notable for its excellent shelf presentation and much better than average condition. Volumes vary in condition from truly fine to very good+. Volume III Part 1, Volume III Part 2 and Volume IV are all first edition, first printing. Volume I is first edition fifth printing. Volume II is first edition fourth printing. Volume V - The Eastern Front - is the first edition second printing. There were only two first edition printings of The Eastern Front, the second occurring in the same month as the first printing and being identical in all respects but for the copyright page. All six volumes have superior blue cloth bindings with bright gilt and only minimal shelf wear. It should be noted that Volume IV, The Aftermath, shows a small amount of the bubbling to the cloth that is endemic to this particular edition. The contents are of special note. All six volumes have clean, bright, and tight contents. We find no spotting and no inscriptions. The only previous ownership mark is a bookplate on the ffep of The Eastern Front. Even the text block edges are unusually bright and free of spotting. The first four volumes are so crisp and bright internally that it is clear they have never been read. All maps and illustrations are present and all maps are properly folded (including the notoriously fragile folding map at p.368 of The Eastern Front). Additional images available upon request. Spine a little sunned and the lettering a bit rubbed but readable, a very good copy. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr.'s copy with his bookplate and juvenile pencil signature ("Joe Kennedy"). Kennedy was the oldest of the nine Kennedy siblings and was considered the scion of the family. His death in WWII propelled his brother John F. Kennedy into the family's political leadership role. It also prompted JFK to write a memoir of his brother, As We Remember Joe. A very uncommon signature. .

        The World Crisis, set of four British first edition, later printings in the rare dust jackets

      London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1924. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Here is a jacketed, four volume set of British first edition, later printings of Churchill's history of the First World War, which he titled "The World Crisis." These four volumes comprise the history of the war years 1911-1918. Churchill published these first four volumes between 1923 and 1927. Two supplemental volumes followed in 1929 and 1931. These were The Aftermath covering the years 1918-1928 and The Eastern Front, which Churchill initially proposed as "separate from but supplementary to our five volume history." (Cohen, Vol. I, P.234) We can supply copies of these two supplemental volumes separately, upon request. The volumes in this set vary from fine to very good plus, the jackets from near-fine to very good minus. Volume I, 1911-1914, is the British first edition, fifth printing. It was published in 1924, 15 months after the first printing, and retains very similar appearance. The dust jacket's pale green color, spine, front face, and front flap are identical to the first printing, with the rear face adding a blurb for the 1915 volume and the back flap adding reviews of the 1911-1914 volume. The navy cloth binding is identical to that of the first printing, with the exception of a single gilt star added to the spine. Volume II, 1915, is the British first edition, fourth printing, published in 1923, less than two months after the first printing. Notably, the dust jacket is identical to that of the first printing, as is the navy cloth binding. The two 1916-1918 Volumes, Parts I & II, are the British first edition, third printing, published the same month as the first printing. The dust jackets are nearly identical to those of the first printing, differing only in replacement of the six-line blurb at the center of each front face with five lines of review quotes from Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph. The volumes are bound in navy cloth identical to that of the first printing, though the volumes use thinner sheets than the first printing. The blue cloth bindings of all four volumes are square, clean, and tight with bright spine gilt and only trivial wear to extremities. The contents of the two 1916-1918 volumes are especially bright with no spotting and clean page edges. In the 1916-1918 volumes we note only a tiny Paris bookshop sticker affixed to the front pastedown of each volume and some denting at the upper fore edge of Part 2, affecting the blank margins of pages 531-561. The contents of the 1911-1914 and 1915 volumes are bright with no previous ownership marks and spotting limited to the page edges and the first and final pages of the text, the spotting very light to the 1911-1914 page edges, which are age-toned, and heaver to the 1915 volume page edges. All four dust jackets are noteworthy for both scarcity and condition. The 1911-1914 dust jacket retains the pale green color on both faces, with typical spine toning. The only noteworthy loss is at the spine head, extending to a maximum depth of .5 inch. There is fractional chipping to corners, spine tail, and the top edge of the front face as well as a faint L-shaped stain on the front face where another book or rectangular object once lay against the dust jacket. The 1915 dust jacket is an excellent example, highly complete with only fractional chipping at extremities and minor toning to the spine. The 1916-1916 dust jackets show shallow chipping to the spine ends and the upper edges to a maximum depth of .25 inch. Both 1916-1918 jacket spines are mildly toned with a few faint moisture stains. All four dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Fully jacketed, first printing, six-volume sets today - on the rare occasions they are available - command a premium price well into five figures. This unique set offers the collector the rarity and prestige of first edition dust jackets for the four war years volumes at a fraction of that price. Fine binding, unsigned but probably by Alberto Sangorski, of turquoise levant morocco, covers with gilt fillet and gilt dotted outer borders, upper cover with an onlaid brown morocco strip border enclosing an inner panel border of continuous gilt tooled flower and leaf spray tooling with small red morocco onlays and gilt dots, gilt heart-shaped corner ornaments, a large inner panel of identical tooling in blind with small white onlays and small dots, lower cover undecorated save for the outer border; spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt lettered in one compartment, a decorated gilt panel in the rest; board edges with single gilt fillet, turn-ins with gilt fillets and gilt dotted line, doublures and free endpapers of brown watered silk, interleaved with doubled white satin, gilt edges; pale blue full morocco folding box, lettered in gilt. Illuminated manuscript on thick vellum, 15 leaves plus one blank fly-leaf each at front and back (27 numbered pages plus colophon page), on linen guards, written in an upright semi-gothic book hand in black, title in red within a full ornamental border incorporating an oval miniature portrait of Keats; 2 full-page miniatures and 7 vignettes, six of the illustrations signed by Sangorski with his AS cipher and dated 1924 or 1925; a total of five pages with full-page borders, 17 illuminated initials (one historiated) incorporating elaborate borders with penwork tracery, other verse-opening initials in alternating red, blue, green or gold with penwork tracery; the full-page and smaller borders in a variety of green, purple, blue, brown, red and other colours, all in stylized floral and foliate design and lavishly heightened with gold. Bookplates of Frederick S. Peck and Paul Edward Chevalier (his sale, Christie's NY, 9 Nov. 1990, lot 76). Colophon statement: "This manuscript The Eve of St. Agnes by John Keats was designed, written out, and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski. This manuscript will not be duplicated [signed:] Alberto Sangorski". An illuminated manuscript of exceptional quality in fine condition. Alberto Sangorski (1862–1932) was elder brother of Francis Sangorski, co-founder with George Sutcliffe of the London binders Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Around 1905, Alberto abandoned his career as secretary to a goldsmith and took up the art of calligraphy, creating sumptuous illuminated manuscripts of the very highest quality. Having illuminated Sangorski & Sutcliffe's masterpiece, the Great Omar, in its elaborate jewelled binding (famously lost on the Titanic), Alberto fell out with his brother, who would not let him sign his manuscripts, and in about 1910 took his talents to Sangorski & Sutcliffe's fierce rivals, Riviere & Son, where he was free to sign his own work. It is not known how long Alberto's relationship with Riviere lasted, but it seems that by the mid 1920s, Alberto, then in his 60s, was producing work on his own account, lavishing all the time and attention necessary to complete each book himself. The Folger library (call no. W.b. 260) has a Sangorski illuminated manuscript in a similar binding to the present, purchased by H. C. Folger in 1926 from Robson & Co. Ltd., London. The Times Literary Supplement for 23 December 1926 reported that, "For many years a Londoner of foreign descent, Mr. Alberto Sangorski, has been 'making' beautiful books .... He has just completed for Messrs. Robson and Co., of 7 Hanover Street, a richly illuminated manuscript of Shakespeare's Songs and Sonnets, [which] has been in hand for five years, and every detail — designing, engrossing illumination, painting and binding has been done by Mr. Sangorski." Messrs Robson and Co. were a small bookselling firm run by Philip Appleby Robson (1871–1951), son of the architect Edward Robert Robson (1836–1917), who had connections with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and who designed the handsome board school in Hanover Street (now Noel Street, Islington). In the late 1890s the firm had been in West End premises at 23 Coventry Street, off Piccadilly Circus. There is no sign of their involvement in this volume, but they are the probable agents for its sale; perhaps it was a commission for the Rhode Island collector Frederick S. Peck (1868–1947). FIRST EDITION of Bohr, Kramers, and Clarke's influential paper that "contained drastic theoretical proposals concerning the interaction of light and matter." Printed simultaneously in German in Zeitschrift fur Physik. "After Kramers had succeeded in extending the scope of the correspondence argument to the theory of optical dispersion - thus rounding off a treatment of the interaction of atomic systems with radiation that accounted for all emission, absorption, and scattering processes - Bohr ventured to propose a systematic formulation of the whole theory, in which what he called the virtual character of the classical model was emphasized. In this he was aided by Kramers and a young American visitor, J. C. Slater, and the new theory was published in 1924 under the authorship of all three. The most striking feature of this remarkable paper, 'The Quantum Theory of Radiation,' was the renunciation of the classical form of causality in favor of a purely statistical description. Even the distribution of energy and momentum between the radiation field and the 'virtual oscillators' constituting the atomic systems was assumed to be statistical, the conservation laws being fulfilled only on the average. This was going too far: the paper was hardly in print before A. H. Compton and A. W. Simon had established by direct experiment the strict conservation of energy and momentum in an individual process of interaction between atom and radiation. Some bumping to spine and corners, slight staining to top edge of back board, a little fading to top front edge and spine. Tiny bookseller's sticker is attached to the back fixed endpaper. There is an inscription to the owner of the book on the front free endpaper, very good. C.S. Forester was awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize, founded in memory of a partner in the publishing house of A. and C. Black Ltd., and is one of the oldest and most prestigious book awards in Britain.

Of those five hundred, one hundred were signed by the author. This copy is not signed, and is one of the four hundred unsigned copies. In Good to fair condition, lacking the original dust jacket. Exterior shows chipping to edges, rubbing to side edges of boards, wear to spine ends with fraying, and stamping on spine is completely rubbed. Pages show age and use with foxing, spotting and occasional small tear, with a larger closed tear to page ix. Front hinge appears repaired, contents overall a bit worn with signs of age and use.

Fine in publisher's burgundy cloth titled and decorated in black to spine and front board. Internally clean, very light foxing to page edges. Inscribed Le Queux is difficult to happen upon, and in a copy of this quality it is very scarce. 'The man who really deserves credit for helping develop the spy novel is William Le Queux' (Peter Haining). William Le Queux, seems to have done everything (or at least said he did); journalist, diplomat, explorer, early pilot, radio enthusiast and the author of a staggering 197 books.       Bottega di Poesia 1924 - Milan, Bottega di Poesia, 1924. Grand in 4 de 36 illustrations, reliure cartonnée de l'éditeur, illustrée en noir, charnières légèrement fendues sur cinq et sept centimètres environ, réparées, de très petits manques de papier aux coiffes et au dos, reliure légèrement fatiguée, restant néanmoins très solide, bon et bel exemplaire. Alberto Martini naquit en 1876 dans un village près de Trévise en Vénétie. Il fut peintre, graveur, illustrateur, graphiste, et dessinateur. Les critiques d'Art décrivent son oeuvre d'élégante et épique à grotesque et macabre. Il est considéré comme l'un des précurseurs du surréalisme, une certaine influence pouvant d'ailleurs se retrouver entre autres dans certaines oeuvres de Salvador Dali ou de Max Ernst. Fils d'un professeur d'Art à l'Institut technique de Trévise et portraitiste, Martini débuta en 1895 comme illustrateur de livres, avec "Il Morgante Maggiore" de Luigi Pulci et ''La secchia rapita" d'Alessandro Tassoni. En 1897 il exposa 14 dessins intitulés "La corte dei miracoli" (la cours des miracles) à la Biennale de Venise. En 1898 il devint illustrateur pour le magazine d'Art allemand ''Dekorative Kunst''. En 1901 il illustra "La Divina commedia" de Dante Alighieri. En 1905 il produisit 132 dessins et gravures à l'encre pour les histoires extraordinaires d'Edgar Allan Poe. Son oeuvre fut largement influencée par Albretch Dürer, Pieter Bruegel, Lucas Cranach, Albretch Altdorfer, Joseph Sattler. En 1910, il illustra les ''Poèmes'' de Paul Verlaine et ''Hamlet" de William Shakespeare. A partir de 1915 il peignit des pastels et des lithographies sur la thématique du ''papillon" dans un style très proto-surréaliste. Durant la première guerre mondiale, il produisit des dessins intitulés "Danza macabra" qui illustrèrent des cartes postales distribuées aux troupes italiennes et aux alliés qui combattaient les Austro-Hongrois. Il produisit des peintures commissionnées par la marquise Luisa Casati, la comtesse Revedin et Paola d'Oestheim et d'autres encore. En 1923 il écrivit une sorte d'autobiographie "Vita d'artista" (vie d'artiste) et ''Il Tetiteatro " exposant des idées innovantes afin d'illustrer et de décorer le théâtre. En 1928, déçu par les critiques et le monde artistique de son pays, il s'exila en France, y demeurant 6 ans. En 1940 il publia une revue d'Art intitulée ''Perseus", en 1952 il illustra l'oeuvre de Rainer Maria Rilke, il décéda en 1954.         Sketches of Northern Spanish Architecture: In Pen, Pencil and Wash

      New York: Architectural Book Publishing Co, 1924. Hardcover. Good +. 51 illustrated plates unbound in the publisher's original salmon boards stamped in black with original red cloth spine and with a cloth ribbon tie. All plates present and in good condition. Samuel Chamberlain studied architecture at the University of Washington (1913) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1914). When the United States entered the First World War Chamberlain left M.I.T. to join the American Field Service Ambulance Corps in France. He was so impressed with the architecture of the old world that he stayed in Europe to sketch after the end of the war in 1918. In this regard, Samuel Chamberlain joined other famous Americans who dedicated much of their art to European architectural scenes, such as Whistler, Pennell and John Taylor Arms. Chamberlain was both the author and illustrator of a number of architectural books, including Sketches of Northern Spanish Architecture (1924), Domestic Architecture in Rural France (1926) and Tudor Homes of England (1928).
