        Ein Hungerkunstler Vier Geschichten

Berlin: Die Schmiede, 1924 First German language edition of A Hunger Artist. Original dark green cloth boards have moderate wear. Printed cover, designed by Georg Salter, is somewhat faded but spine label is intact with no chipping or soiling, with little fading. Striated paper-covered boards suggests wood-veneer covered with thick brush strokes by an amateur furniture-maker. No Dust Jacket. Cover protected by mylar sleeve. Binding is tight. Text block and interior pages are clean and unmarked.*** This was the last work Kafka saw to press in his lifetime and published in the year of his death. He worked on correcting proofs of the book as he was dying. About 3,000 copies printed, though the files of Die Schmiede which published mainly Jews and Zionists was eradicated by the Nazis, unusual for them as German methodicalness – "Vorsprung durch Technik". (For example, retaining the Altneu Synagogue of Prague, as well as so many religious and cultural relics in the adjoining museum, was based on the idea of exhibiting the relics of an extinct race.) As of April 1925, 551 copies of this title had been sold.*** Dietz 66; W / G 7; Raabe 7. A beautiful collector's edition.

        Autographed Letter - 2 Pages

n.p. [Paris]: Laboureur, 1924, 1924 Jean-Émile Laboureur, [French Painter, 1877-1947]. 2 page A.L.S., June 3rd, 1924. n.p. [Paris]. A very fine letter to an unnamed art dealer detailing titles & prices for 11 prints offered on consignment until July 15th, 1924, with good content: " Your customer is practically correct. The print "Love in the Woods" is prepared not by a dry point but by a very light etching, as was nearly always the custom in France since the 18th century. It is the case with about one quarter of my engravings. It depends on the subject matter and of the treatment" Signed & dated, J. E. Laboureur. "Founder in 1923 of the Société des Peintres Graveurs Indépendants, friend to avant-garde poet Guillaume Apollinaire and painter Marie Laurencin, the artist Jean-Émile Laboureur found inspiration in sources ranging from Hellenistic vase painting to Nabis artists such as Bonnard, Vuillard and Vallotton. Laboureur was born in Nantes, France in 1877. He arrived in Paris in 1895 to study at the Faculty of Law. Quickly dissatisfied in that pursuit, he began to frequent the Academie Julian, a prestigious Parisian art academy. Laboureur was soon introduced to the eminent wood engraver Auguste Lepère, and decided to devote himself to the study of printmaking. While Lepère imparted technical expertise, artists like Toulouse-Lautrec, with whom Laboureur became acquainted in 1896, encouraged his sense of humor and irony, bringing a cosmopolitan flair to his work. Between 1899 and 1910, Laboureur traveled extensively. He cultivated a broad historical knowledge of engraving in Germany and Italy. In Greece, he was greatly inspired by the elegance of Classical vase painting. He returned to Paris in 1910, as Picasso and Braque were ushering in Cubism. Building on this analytical, geometric style with the knowledge and inspiration acquired during his travels, Laboureur developed a decorative style distinctly his own. By the end of World War I, Laboureur had gained a new audience with his success in book design and illustration. His service in the war had led him to experiment with engraving on metal, which required neither the acid baths of etching nor the bulky equipment of wood engraving. Gradually his style became more fluid, moving away from the rigid properties of Cubism. Displaying what contemporary poet and friend Max Jacob described as "chic" and "grand classical elegance," Laboureur was widely collected by Americans as well as Europeans." - IFPDA. Signed by Author. Original Autographed Letters & Documents. Framed & Glazed.

C:a 25 × 16,5 cm vardera. Ramade tillsammans i en djup lådliknande ram. Proveniens: Linnea Braun.

        THE ILLITERATE DIGEST

Albert & Charles Boni New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1924. First Edition. cloth. About Fine, lacking a dustwrapper. Blue cloth. Illustrated with drawings. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper nearly filling the page: "To/J.C. Calhoun/a Friend/from/Will Rogers/(almost an author)/New York. Nov 15, 24." Rogers was born in Indian Territory in 1879 and had some Native American blood in his veins. He began in vaudeville and moved on to motion pictures, a career that was cut short when he died in a small plane crash in 1935 near Point Barrow, Alaska. Perhaps he was best known, however, for his syndicated newspaper column which had such a massive following that the proposition that he run for President was once seriously advanced. His saying, "All I know is what I read in the newspapers," became a popular catchword of the times. Books signed or inscribed by this most popular of American humorists, especially with such a fine inscription, are uncommon.

        Physiology Lab Notebook

Toronto Toronto, 1924. Quarto. 192 pages; lined notebook-style paper; handwritten throughout; illustrated with graphs and affixed photomechanical charts; tan cloth boards, partially overlaid with textured black paper, to which a stamp with handwriting has been applied. A truly unique object that details the weekly experiments of a student physiology lab at the University of Toronto in the fall of 1924. Ostensibly belonging to one G. M. Fletcher, yet written in three different hands, this highly-detailed notebook offers a fascinating account of the various muscle trials that the medical students were conducting, including each lesson's object, method and result. An especially fascinating aspect of this notebook is the photomechanical reproductions of each week's graphical results, which are affixed throughout the book within the written narrative of the experiment. To produce these, it appears that the school used a version of Augustus Waller's electromyography machine, which projected muscle movement trace from an electrometer onto a photographic plate; this allowed the movement to be recorded in real time, and for copies to be easily made for each student. These notes and graphs fill approximately half of the notebook. A sign of how arduous the lab was - and perhaps how frustrating - is evident from an amusing codicil written on the very last page, which reads in part: The Purpose of this exp. is exp. exp. exp. exp. exp. exp. exp. exp. exp. exp. experiment experiment experiment experiment... Also, The more one attempts to move the cause of dissatisfaction, The more one is impressed by the difficulty encountered in such a project. It appears that physiology may not have been these students' favorite subject. Good condition with moderate usage wear to cover, including edge bumping, smudges and abrasions, as well as overall age toning to all.

        THE DIARY

      G. Bell and Sons Ltd London: G. Bell and Sons Ltd, 1924. 187 x 121 mm (7 3/8 x 4 3/4").Eight volumes bound in three. Transcribed by the late Rev. Mynors Bright, M.A., from the shorthand manuscript in the Pepysian Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge. Edited with additions by Henry B. Wheatley. FINE CONTEMPORARY TERRA COTTA CRUSHED MOROCCO BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE (signed on front turn-ins), double gilt fillet border on covers, upper covers with gilt insignia incorporating the initials "S P," crossed anchors, and looping ropes with Pepys' (misspelled) motto in Latin on a ribbon above it, raised bands, spines gilt in double-ruled compartments with central ornament of either a crown, a sailor's knot, an anchor, or crossed quills, turn-ins ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With frontispiece portrait of the author.Spines lightly and uniformly sunned toward pink, otherwise AN EXTREMELY PLEASING SET IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION inside and out. Pepys' diary is available in various editions (see, for example, items #140 and 169); the chief value of the present printing is that it is done on India paper, allowing the full substantial text to be contained in a very manageable space. And the compactness of this edition is here very much enhanced by the bindings, made with high quality morocco and expertly finished. (The Sangorski Latinist has, however, fallen short of perfection: Pepys chose as his personal motto "mens cujusque is est quisque," or "what a man's mind is, that is what he is," but here the first word is unfortunately spelled "mons," Latin for "mountain.").

THE WORKS OF H. G. WELLS

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1924. ONE OF 1,670 COPIES, OF WHICH THIS IS ONE OF 1,050 FOR AMERICA (1,000 of them for sale), SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR (this is copy #982). 235 x 159 mm (9 1/4 x 6 1/4"). 28 volumes. Original publisher's linen backed green paper boards, paper title labels on flat spines, edges rough trimmed. Half of the volumes UNOPENED, and all encased in the original (slightly worn) slipcases (one slipcase a modern replica). Photographic frontispiece in each volume. Title pages in red and black. Printed on high quality rag paper. Most volumes with extra paper labels. Spines slightly darkened, rough edges a bit yellowed, three leaves with open marginal tears well away from the text (no doubt from rough opening), other trivial imperfections, but A VERY FINE SET, many of the volumes in near pristine condition, with much of the text having never been read. This is an attractively produced as well as textually important edition of the works of one of the most significant British authors at work during the final years of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th. The prolific and durable Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) is most famous for his imaginative fiction from the 1890s. Works like "The Time Machine" (1895), "The Island of Dr. Moreau" (1896), "The Invisible Man" (1897), "War of the Worlds" (1898) and "When the Sleeper Awakes" (1899) established Wells as a master (along with Jules Verne) of science fiction. At the same time, his novels from the new century were of considerable interest and value as well. His "Anticipations" (1902) "showed his real gift for sociological speculation" (DNB), and his "Tongo-Bungay" (1909) -- which tells the story of a corporate mogul who makes his fortune selling a slightly injurious patent medicine and, when everything else fails, turns to building war munitions--is often considered Wells' masterpiece. In addition to the major works of fiction, our 28 volumes obviously also include a large number of short pieces of fiction and nonfiction. By the time Wells died, he had published more than 100 books and established his fame not only as a writer, but also as a minor prophet who accurately predicted war planes, tanks, the atomic bomb, and World War II. Wells was born to lower middle class parents, and his early work life was unsuccessful as a draper and chemist's assistant. With each failure, Wells would reside with his mother on the estate where she served as a domestic and there immerse himself in its fine library. Later he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science, studying biology under Darwin's major defender, T. H. Huxley (1825-95), meanwhile dabbling in contemporary ideas of socialism through free lectures at the Fabian Society. After earning a degree in zoology and geology, Wells taught and began publishing short stories, becoming a full-time writer after his major success with "The Time Machine." Printed on pure rag deckle-edge paper, the text of the present edition was read and revised throughout by Wells, and he wrote a special preface to each volume as well as a general introduction to the edition as a whole.

        A Child's Rosary Book

Ditchling: St. Dominic's Press. VG. 1924. First Edition. Softcover. Grey printed wraps, a little wear to spine ends and corners of covers, title page printed in red and black, internally clean and bright, fifteen wood engraved illustrations by David Jones, two of which are reproduced on the upper cover. , David Jones (1895-1974) was a painter, wood engraver and one of the most important of the British modernist poets and his poem, 'The Anathemata', was considered by W. H. Auden to be the best long poem written in English in the 20th century. During the First World War Jones served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers and after demobilization, won a government scholarship to study art at the Westminster School of Art. Like a number of other artists and writers who had seen active service during the war, Jones was increasingly drawn to Roman Catholicism, to which he converted in 1921. It was probably Father John O'Connor (in fact the model for G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown character), who suggested that he contact the Catholic artist Eric Gill, and so Jones joined Gill's Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, where he learned wood and copper engraving. Here Jones began illustrating books, initially for the St. Dominic's Press and later for the Golden Cockerel Press, for which he engraved the Cockerel itself in 1925. Despite a growing reputation as an illustrator Jones became increasingly dissaffected with the medium and for the rest of his career as an artist he concentrated on painting, his style moving from traditional watercolour to a unique mixture of pencil and watercolour, in which he produced dense works full of symbolism. , 8" by 5.5", [9] 2-37 [7] pp .
