[Attributes: Soft Cover]

New York: Architectural Book Publishing Co, 1924. Hardcover. Good +. 51 illustrated plates unbound in the publisher's original salmon boards stamped in black with original red cloth spine and with a cloth ribbon tie. All plates present and in good condition. Samuel Chamberlain studied architecture at the University of Washington (1913) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1914). When the United States entered the First World War Chamberlain left M.I.T. to join the American Field Service Ambulance Corps in France. He was so impressed with the architecture of the old world that he stayed in Europe to sketch after the end of the war in 1918. In this regard, Samuel Chamberlain joined other famous Americans who dedicated much of their art to European architectural scenes, such as Whistler, Pennell and John Taylor Arms. Chamberlain was both the author and illustrator of a number of architectural books, including Sketches of Northern Spanish Architecture (1924), Domestic Architecture in Rural France (1926) and Tudor Homes of England (1928). Under his clear and large pencil signature Willy Pogany has added the words S.S. America 1924. The subject's name is written underneath the image. The Willy Pogany original illustration is on paper that measures 5.50 x 8.50 inches (approx) and is in Near Fine condition. Leon M. Schoonmaker from Princeton University was the U.S. men's fencing champion at the 1920 Antwerp Summer Olympic Games and President and Secretary of the Amateur Fencers League of America (AFLA). The First Edition Online Bookstore has this original Willy Pogany original illustration of a man named Donald B. Shedhams. The Willy Pogany original illustration of Donald B. Shedhams is on paper that measures 6.00 x 9.75 inches (approx). Condition is Very Good with light creasing and age toning to the edges; and the previous owner's address label to the reverse. Willy Pogany carried out this portrait illustration at the same time that he drew Adeline Josephine Gehrig and Leon M. Schoonmaker since the under his clear and large pencil signature Willy Pogany has added the words S.S. America 1924. As with the other two Willy Pogany portrait illustrations, it is believed that this portrait was undertaken either to or from the Summer Olympic Games in Paris of 1924. The subject's name is written underneath the image. The First Edition Online Bookstore has the very rare and collectable Willy Pogany etching Captive Spirit for sale. The Willy Pogany Captive Spirit etching was possibly produced for a book and is of a nude blonde woman tied up and in the hands of a man whose own hands are tied together. The image measures 9.00 x 12.00 inches (approx) and bears the Willy Pogany's signature to the bottom right corner in pencil and the title in Willy Pogany's hand to the bottom left corner. The Willy Pogany Captive Spirit etching has the number 50 to the bottom centre. The etching has a couple of folds that are unlikely to be too noticeable when framed; there is gum residue to the top left corner where there was once a label; some light dust soiling; and the previous owner's label to the reverse. Overall, this is a very attractive and rare Willy Pogany etching and would make a wonderful addition to any Willy Pogany collection or any collection of original artwork. The First Edition Online Bookstore has this very rare and collectable Willy Pogany large erotic etching for sale.
