Official War History of the Wellington Mounted Rifles Regiment

Whitcombe and Tombs 1924 - VG first edition of the Official History of the Wellington Mounted Rifles. VG throughout although front hinge somewhat loose. Previous owner's details in pencil on fep. pgs 260, maps and illustrations including rear fold out map all very good. Minor tear to fabric top of front hinge (see photo). Rare official record of the war service of the Wellington Mounted Rifles from formation and departure through their role as dismounted infantry on Gallipoli, and their tough war across the Sinai and Palestine. The WMR saw much fighting and suffered many casualties. On Gallipoli they served with great distinction including during the zenith of fighting with the August battle for Chunuk Bair where they lost Major James Elmslie killed in action. Elmslie was considered by many to have shown devotion to duty worthy of a Victoria Cross. After the evacuation of Anzac the AMR served as part of the NZ Mounted Brigade in the demanding conditions of the Palestine campaign, seeing action in all the major battles fought by the NZMR through to the Jordan Valley and the conclusion of the war. The text is very well written by a senior officer of the Regiment and is extensively illustrated. The maps, particularly of the Palestine campaign, are of a very high standard and give much important detail. Very Rare Text. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Ulysses.

Paris, Shakespeare and Company (printed for Sylvia Beach by Maurice Darantiere at Dijon, France), (January) 1924. - 4to. (8), 736 pp. (including 4 pages of "Ulysses Additional Corrections" at end). Contemp. blue cloth bound by Maltby of Oxford, giltstamped leather label to spine, with the original white wrappers printed in blue bound within. First edition, fourth printing. One of only two known signed and inscribed copies of this printing of "Ulysses" (the other being to Alys Eyre Macklin), with Joyce's autograph inscription in black ink on the preliminary blank: "To / Edward Irvine Halliday / James Joyce / Paris / 31. iii. [1]924". The painter Edward Halliday (1902-84) was a student at the Royal College of Art and attending life classes on a travel scholarship at the Académie Colarossi in Paris when Joyce inscribed this copy of "Ulysses" for him. His early murals "demonstrate the classical basis of his academic training but also have a strangely dream-like atmosphere and complex narrative that is personal to Halliday" (Ann Compton, ODNB). He later went on to become a successful portrait-painter, with the Queen and Winston Churchill among his subjects, as well as having a career in broadcasting and working on "black" wartime propaganda with Sefton Delmer. - Insignificant wear to boards, wrappers slightly dust-marked. Paper lightly browned overall and brittle as usual; a very few marginal tears and chips; still a fine example of this fragile book. The rich blue colour of the wrappers, liable to discoloration, is well preserved within the contemporary cloth boards. Widely recognized as the key book of 20th-century English literature, "Ulysses" is not only the author's most famous work, but counts among the principal works in the modernist canon. Contents browned as always but an excellent copy. First French edition of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. With the translator's signed presentation inscription to the first blank leaf. The name of the recipient has been excised and the inscription partially obscured by a one-page autograph letter from Joyce written in French on the back of one of the advertisement leaves which were laid into the book at publication. Again the name of the recipient has been excised. Joyce first gives details of his new address, then proceeds to present this copy. He mentions critics and gives some information regarding Ludmila Savitzky's movements. Slocum & Cahoon D15. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        The Autobiography of an Idea

New York: Press of the American Institute of Architects, Inc,, 1924. With a Foreword by Claude Bragdon. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Corners of boards lightly bumped, faint spotting to cloth, light foxing to edges of text block and endpapers. An excellent copy in a bright with one small discoloured spot and tiny closed tear to front panel. First edition, first printing, of the "father of skyscrapers", American architect Louis Henry Sullivan's autobiography, written in the third person when Sullivan was nearing the end of his life and stopping abruptly at the age of 38. Sullivan (1856 –1924) single-handedly forged an American style of architecture, designing buildings such as the Guaranty Building (1894) in Buffalo, New York, which would become blueprints for following generations of architects. A true modernist, he was the first to proclaim that form should follow function in a poem he wrote in 1896. The Autobiography of an Idea was initially serialised in the Journal of the American Architects in 1922–3.

Meyers Lexicon Seventh Edition Volumes 1 to 15 Complete

Bibliographisches Institut, Leipzig, Leipzig 1924 - Fifteen volumes of the encyclopaedia published from 1924 to 1933, complete, as far as I know. The volumes are mostly in individual protective cardboard slipcases as originally issued, with further protective paper dustwrappers. One volume has sustained minor damage at the spine in the label area, which makes me think it was a slightly damaged set withheld from sale by either a bookshop or the publisher. There is no indication that the set has ever been used. Binding is half-leather (or possibly imitation leather), with red and gilt on spines, some endpapers and edges with foxing, lavishly illustrated throughout with colour and monochrome illustrations. generally a unique copy. Volumes 1-12 are dated 1924 to 1930. Vol 13 is dated 1931. Vols 14 and 15 are dated 1933, which brings them into the 'braune' (Nazi) area. Each signature has been penned in green ink on a separate panel of the red-and-blue stitched official AL ball (League president's name no longer visible). PSA/DNA Autograph Certification Grade 7 for each signature. The ball itself is consistent in appearance with one used in a game.         Meyers Lexicon Seventh Edition Volumes 1 to 15 Complete

Leipzig: Bibliographisches Institut, Leipzig, 1924. Fifteen volumes of the encyclopaedia published from 1924 to 1933, complete, as far as I know. Binding is half-leather (or possibly imitation leather), with red and gilt on spines, some endpapers and edges with foxing, lavishly illustrated throughout with colour and monochrome illustrations. generally a unique copy.. Volumes 1-12 are dated 1924 to 1930. Vol 13 is dated 1931. Vols 14 and 15 are dated 1933, which brings them into the 'braune' (Nazi) area. Shipping will need to be negotiated, as this is a rather large item. Illustration shows a typical volume.. Seventh Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

        THE ILLITERATE DIGEST

New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1924. First Edition. Hardcover. Spine a little soiled, some sunning to the board edges. Near Fine, lacking a dustwrapper. Blue cloth with a white cloth spine and somewhat larger than the trade edition. Illustrated with drawings. Copy #40 of 250 copies SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper. Rogers was born in Indian Territory in 1879 and had some Native American blood in his veins. He began in vaudeville and moved on to motion pictures, a career that was cut short when he died in a small plane crash in 1935 near Point Barrow, Alaska. Perhaps he was best known, however, for his syndicated newspaper column which had such a massive following that the proposition that he run for President was once seriously advanced. His saying, "All I know is what I read in the newspapers," became a popular catchword of the times. Books signed or inscribed by this most popular of American humorists are rather uncommon.

Relache.

(Einleitungsnotiz Picabias). Bankverbindung in Deutschland vorhanden.
