Coaching Days and Coaching Ways

Macmillan and Co., London 1924 - 8vo. 18.5 by 12.5 cm. or 7.5 by 5 inches. xv, [i], 376 pp. Fabulous Riviere & Son onlay binding of full crushed morocco. The inlaid scene depicts a mounted groom holding another horse by its reins. Five colors are used in the imagery. This is set off with gilt rules, festoons and dots. The spine has raised bands with French fillet compartments and central motives of a horseshoe, bridle, and riding hat. The binding complements the book's wistful nostalgia for the pre-railroad era when coaches linked distant towns. We are taken down seven major coaching routes -- the Bath, Exeter, Portsmouth, Brighton, Dover, York and Holyhead roads. Captured are the atmosphere of the inns, the colorful characters one might have encountered, the occasional hazards. The work pulls us in as narcotically as a great Trollope, Austen or Thackeray novel, while greatly deepening our understanding of that lost world. Joints repaired. Some rubbing and wear to spine.

The Sea: Its History and Romance

London: 1924-, 1926. Sixteen parts bound in four volumes quarto, illustrated in colour and black & white; a fine set in publisher's blue cloth boards, gilt, sailing ship vignette to front boards. A most handsome set. An attractive set of Bowen's deluxe history of sailing and voyaging. The four volumes cover the history of voyaging to 1875, concentrating on the achievements of Great Britain ("Britain and her cousins must always look to Blue Water for their salvation"). This is a relatively early title by Bowen, a well-known and popular maritime author, who published titles such as Ships for All, and as editor of Merchant Ships of the World.

The Walls And Gates Of Peking Researches And Impressions

London: John Lane The Bodley Head Limited, [1924]. First Edition, Limited to 800 numbered copies. Presentation copy from the author to Mr. S.Jupp of the Royal Institue of British Architects, who is thanked in the preface for having examined some of the architectural descriptions in the text. ìThe origin of this book is the beauty of the city gates of Peking; their importance as characteristic elements in some of the finest views of the Chinese capital; their wonderful setting amidst old buildings, fresh trees and decaying moats; their decorative architectural character. Some of these gates may still be called landmarks of Peking, historically as well as topographically; they reflect, together with the adjoining walls, much of the early history of this great city, and they form, together with the streets and landscapes in which they are set, the most relevant spots of characteristic and beautiful scenery.î (Preface) The work combines the beautiful photogravures after photographs taken by Siren with illustrations of measured drawings of a number of the gates made by Chinese artists under Sirenís supervision, and historical and descriptive text mainly based on local Chinese chronicles generally unavailable in foreign translation, and notices of brickmarks and inscriptions found on the monuments themselves. folio. pp. xvii, 239. folding map, 109 photogravures after photographs by the author, 2 colour plans & 51 text illus. after architectural drawings made by Chinese artists (some full-page). Uncut in original quarter cloth (edges worn, bit of foxing to text, photogravures clean)

Sur les ensembles finis. Extrait de 'Fundamenta Mathematicae', Volume 6, pp. 45-95, [Warsaw, 1924].

      - Sewn offprint without wrappers, slight damage to paper backstrip, uniform light browning, untrimmed and mostly unopened, library sticker and AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION inscription 'Szanownemu Panu Dr. Leonowi Chwistkowi od autora' on upper margin of first page. First edition. 'In 1924 Tarski published [this] first systematic development of a theory of finite sets, based on Zermelo's axioms, but with the negation of the axiom of infinity and no axiom of choice. Dedekind and Hausdorff had envisaged such a project, but Tarski was the first to realize it completely. The eminent French mathematician Denjoy later incorporated substantial portions of the paper into one of his books' (Givent, ibid., p. 49). This copy's presentee, Leon Chwistek (1884-1944) was an avant-garde painter as well as a logician. According to Bertrand Russell, he was one of only six people on the planet (three of whom were Poles) who had read and understood all of Principia Mathematica. In 1928 Chwistek and Tarski found themselves rivals for a newly-created professorship at Lvov University, in what turned out to be a rather messy competition. Outside opinions were canvassed, including that of Russell, who wrote: 'The work of Mr. Tarski I do not at the moment remember and do not have access to at present. In these circumstances I can only say that in choosing Dr. Chwistek you will be choosing a man who will do you credit, but I am not in a position to compare his merits with those of Mr. Tarski'. 'The decision was made in 1930: the job went to Chwistek. Twardowski was much offended, as were the other philosophers because, in their view, Tarski was far and away the superior candidate. The residue of personal rancour lasted, and as a result logic did not bring the mathematicians and philosophers of Lvov together in a unified circle as it had in Warsaw. Nevertheless, relations between Chwistek and Tarski remained good' (A.B. & S. Feferman, Alfred Tarski: Life and Logic, Cambridge, 2004, p. 67).

Its backbone was the collection of Wyndham Law of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, and included oil paintings, watercolours, sketches, prints and photographs, most of which are based on landscape scenes of the South China trading ports in the 18th and 19th centuries, and of British activities in China.. The Chater Collection was dispersed and largely destroyed during the Japanese occupation, and only 94 pieces (now an important part of the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art) are known to have survived (Wikipedia). A near fine copy, with the gilt bright and fresh, of Detmold's rarest book in the original cardboard box with the same decoration and illustration on top (upper corners of box neatly strengthened).Detmold illustrated “a number of books of fantasy drawing… which show a vivid imagination, fine drawing and warm coloring” (Houfe, 115)“The Detmold twins were a unique phenomenon in British art, recognized by their contemporaries as a single creative personality ‘divided between two bodies’. Their remarkable etchings and watercolours of plants and animals, minutely detailed in the Japanese manner, are all prized collector’s items. Charles Frederick and Edward Barton Detmold were born in Putney, south London, on 21 November 1883. Their middle names were later replaced by ‘Maurice’ and ‘Julius’, but the two boys were generally called Maurice and Edward…At the age of 5 the twins developed a dual passion for drawing and observing animals, and made regular sketching expeditions to Regent’s Park Zoo and the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, where they drew detailed sketches of shells, crayfish, monkey skulls, and hundreds of other animal subjects. Their first book, Pictures from Birdland, comprising 24 colour plates, was published by J.M. Dent for the Christmas market in 1899. The Detmolds’ most celebrated joint achievement, and among the finest book illustrations ever produced, was the set of 16 watercolours depicting scenes from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Macmillan first issued these in November 1903…Maurice suddenly committed suicide in April 1908. "Edward was devastated…[but] was determined to carry on with all the various ideas and projects they had originally planned in unison. He joined the ranks of Hodder & Stoughton’s immortal band of gift book illustrators…with the superb 1909 edition of Aesop’s Fables…For George Allen, Detmold illustrated Lemonnier’s Birds and Beasts (1911), and two de luxe volumes by the Nobel prizewinner Maurice Maeterlinck, The Life of the Bee (1911) and Hours of Gladness (1912). He returned to Hodder & Stoughton with another popular animal series for children: The Book of Baby Birds (1912), The Book of Baby Pets (1913), The Book of Baby Dogs (1914), and Our Little Neighbours (1921). His final two opulent gift books for Hodder & Stoughton were Fabre’s Book of Insects (1921), with 12 remarkable colour studies of the beautiful and bizarre denizens of the insect world a seen through Detmold’s ‘microscope’ eye; and The Arabian Nights (1924), a very successful change of direction into the realms of exotic fantasy. On the strength of The Arabian Nights, Detmold could have become one of the greatest illustrators of fantasy and fairy stories…During the 1920s Detmold continued to draw, paint, and hold exhibitions of etchings and drypoints, but it was not long before he retired completely from public life…On 1 July 1957 he committed suicide, nearly half a century after the death of his twin brother” (Richard Dalby, The Golden Age of Children’s Book Illustration, pp. 96-98).

[Np]. [1924].. 59;51;41 leaves. Quarto. Original autograph manuscript, neatly written in ink on rectos only, with occasional insertions, deletions and revisions. Scattered paperclip dents, a few early leaves creased in margin, but very good, in folding cloth case. The complete autograph manuscript for Byrne's novel, here denoted "An Untitled Story," in three parts, in which format it was published in CENTURY MAGAZINE (Dec. 1924 - Feb. 1925). It was eventually published in book form by The Century Co. in 1925. Byrne signed and dated the final part at the conclusion, "28 March 1924." A characteristic work by the Irish-American writer, dating from his peripatetic years on the continent. Accompanied by a two page a.l.s. from "Dolly" (i.e. Dorthea Cadogan Byrne), Coolmain Castle, County Cork, 4 July, 1928, two pages, recto and verso of a quarto sheet of mourning stationery, to "My Dear O.R.," giving in considerable detail the circumstances of Donn Byrne's death on June 18th (he was killed when his car broke through a sea wall on a narrow Irish road). Byrne's works enjoyed wide popularity, such that a number of posthumously published works and collections continued to appear in the U.S. and U.K. well into the mid-1930s. Though not widely known now, he remains an interesting instance of a writer bridging several cultures by heritage, by accident of birth, and as a consequence of later rootless travel.

The Phoenician of 1924 (with Signed Photograph of Barry Goldwater, President of Freshman Class)

Published Annually By the Senior Class of Phoenix Union High School, Phoenix 1924 - Hand-colored frontispiece. 264p., [8]. Nice picture (signed) of Barry Goldwater and article by him as President of the Freshman Class. He notes his brother Bob was Treasurer. Reg Manning has also signed his photograph in the Senior Class. Kemper Marley was also in the Senior Class who became one of Arizona's wealthiest men and though was identified as the man who ordered the death of Don Bolles, it was never proven. A remarkable item for all its connections. Barry Goldwater and his brother transferred to Staunton Military Academy where they excelled. Barry then received an appointment to West Point but had to decline as Baron Goldwater became ill and he had to return to Phoenix to operate the Goldwater Department Stores. Yet he put all his energies into promoting the store and also strengthening the Republican Party in Arizona which was weak. Little could he have known he would one day be a long term Senator from Arizona and a candidate for President of the United States forty years later. In original paper covers as issued with wear to yapped edges and tear to head but interior clean and with many signatures of classmates most of whom are now deceased.
