        WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG

London: Methuen & Co., 1924. First edition. Illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard throughout. 8vo, publisher’s original dark blue cloth, lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt on the spine and upper cover. Now handsomely presented in a blue morocco backed solander case and chemise. x,100 pp. A very pleasing and handsome copy with very minimal evidence of age. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST VOLUME ISSUED IN ONE OF THE GREATEST SERIES IN TWENTIETH CENTURY CHILDREN’S LITERATURE. The Pooh Stories of A.A. Milne stand out in the field of 20th century children’s literature. Their popularity, with both the young and the old, has only grown as the years have passed. The themes of these stories, and the gentle kindness of the characters, are forever poignant and touching. If a day ever comes when these books seem old fashion or out-of-style, one could only have pity for that future world. It should also be noted that Ernest Shepard’s illustrations for these titles are as outstanding -and as timeless - as the stories themselves. The books were originally published over the course of four years, beginning with WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG in 1924 and ending with HOUSE AT POOH CORNER in 1928.

Trente ans D'Humour [Inscribed Association Copy]

France-Edition, Paris 1924 - Inscribed by Miller to Emil Schnelluck, one of his oldest friends and one of only a handful who stayed close to Miller through the enormous changes in his life after he met June Mansfield and left his previous existence behind in almost every respect. Schnelluck had been to Europe long before Miller had, and he used to recount to Miller his memories of his visits there, which Miller eagerly soaked up. Now Miller, in Paris for the second time in October, 1930, relays this book to his friend, with a recommendation that it is "fairly easy to read and quite entertaining. Try it!" He also recounts seeing "a peach of a Huysmans yesterday on Blvd Raspail called 'Croquis de Paris.' So much to buy -- so much -- if one only had the dough!" A wonderful inscription to one of his best friends, focused on Paris and books, not to mention poverty -- the important early themes of Miller's literary life. Wrappers are missing and the inscription is on the half-title which is the first page here. Page detached from the rest of the text; extremely brittle, acidifying pages. The condition is fair, and with a risk of deterioration. Miller's underlinings and comments in the text. An excellent personal association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

" A hit on Broaway where it premiered on February 12, 1924, BEGGAR ON HORSEBACK ran for 223 performances. The film version, starring Edward Everett Horton, hit the screen in 1925. Maxwell Selser's later career included a role in the premiere of THE JAZZ SINGER. "The importance of the collection of chief manager Ole Olsen in Kopenhagen, which is described by this catalogue to lovers of art and science, consists chiefly in the variety and completeness with regard to the quantity of works of old industrial art. Only a few of the great collections of the old and new continent can rival this collection in extent, quality and variety of the industrial antiquities. Nearly all spheres of artistic work from the prehistorical period to the end of the eighteenth century are represented by characteristic, sometimes excellent works... This work brings to lovers of art and scholars of old industrial art, a catalogue such has not been published since the great catalogues of the Spitzer, Lanna and Morgan collections. Giving the descriptions in Danish, English and German, the possessor and the editor hope to render a service to the science of the history of art." - from Introduction.         Plakat - Mascotte. Buchdruck.

1924 1924 - 100 x 70 cm, Gefalzt m. zwei kleinen Fehlstellen am Rand (kein Textverlust) Typographisches Plakat des heute noch existierenden, legendären Nachtclubs in Zürich. Mascotte Direction. Otto Neumann-Hofer. Programm vom 16.-bis 31. August 1924.

Friedman of the Signal School at Camp Vail, NJ, this is the first published work to systematize the nomenclature of cryptology, and is the first full-length book to use the term "cryptanalysis" (which Friedman first coined in 1921 or 1922). It is also the first work on codebreaking published by the Federal Government. Aside from providing terminology, it serves as a manual for decoding cryptograms. The terminology and techniques that Friedman describes continue to serve as the basis of cryptology today. Some codes marked in pencil. Charts, codes and tables.

Paris: Le Goupy, 1924 - Quarto. Original cream wrappers printed in black and red. Housed in a black cloth solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Loose in the rubbed and rather marked outer wrappers, tanned at the edges and with a split to the lower portion of the front joint. 12 hand-coloured compositions. First edition, first printing, one of 925 numbered copies (of a total edition of 976). With the signed presentation inscription to the half-title, "To Ernest Hemingway from Harold Stearns. Any guy who can write 'My Old Man' deserves this—and plenty of it. Paris, September, 1924". Stearns had been associate editor of The Dial prior to heading to Paris where he wrote of his fellow expatriates, of their lives and their writing. The reference in this inscription is to one of Hemingway's earliest published short stories. Hemingway made great claims for his own pugilistic capacity. Stearns perhaps meant this little picture book to serve as a gentle reminder that writing about the fight game is a good deal less painful than participation in it.         Dreamlight [Mazda Calendar]

Edison Mazda; 1924 (copyright); 19" X 8 1/2" - NF. This is a complete 1925 Edison Mazda calendar containing Parrish's delightful image of Dreamlight. Maxfield Parrish furnished paintings for 17 annual Edison Mazda calendars (1918 through 1934), with the earliest calendars being the scarcest and more sought after. Dreamlight is from the middle period, and is a delightful image with deep Parrish blues in the water and background, and the young woman highlighted from light coming through the trees behind her. This is a near mint calendar with a full pad, the calendar itself being very clean and with only the start of a bend the upper 1/2" LH corner of the calendar (not reaching the printing). All pages of the pad are present, with the top 'year' page having a small 1" tear and (as is usually found) some rust coloring around the staples. The color of the calendar is outstanding, as can be seen from the accompanying photos. The calendar had been stored flat until recently, when it was framed (in 2000) to better protect it. The calendar can be removed from the frame, at which time the original Mazda advertising on the reverse side of the calendar (listing and describing all of Parrish's prior calendars - with a small B&W photo of each) can be seen. A truly delightful item for the Parrish collector. TO SEE MORE PICTURES AND ADDITIONAL SPECIAL ITEMS, VISIT OUR BOOKSELLER's HOMEPAGE.

      F. Bruckmann A.G., Munchen, Germany 1924 - Undated. Circa 1924. (8) + 104; 104 + 112 + (4); (8) + 76 + 74 + 80 p. Nearly all spheres of artistic work from the prehistorical period to the end of the eighteenth century are represented by characteristic, sometimes excellent works.
