        MOCK BEGGAR HALL.

London: Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1924. - Small quarto. Pictorial boards after a design by William Nicholson. Competently rebacked in black cloth, corners bruised, some scattered foxing and general thumbing and use, two leaves have short, closed tears at the fore- edge, but overall, a sound and reasonably good copy. First edition. With Graves's presentation inscription in the month of publication: "John Crowe Ransom from Robert Graves: in all friendship. May 28th 1924." Graves had two poems accepted for publication in the December 1922 issue of THE FUGITIVE, of which Ransom was co-editor. The two poets embarked on a path of mutual admiration and assistance, Ransom asking if he might dedicate a book to Graves (".because you represent as I see it the best tendancy extant in modern poetry"), and Graves seeking a British publisher for Ransom's work, a task he completed with the editing of GRACE AFTER MEAT, to which Graves also contributed an introduction. As a side note, Ransom was instrumental in forwarding Graves' interest in, and acquaintance with, Laura Riding, who was then publishing in THE FUGITIVE and had recently been making life complicated for certain members of the Vanderbilt circle. He sent to Graves some of her unpublished verse, and described her as "brilliant," and in a fine example of understated diplomacy, as "very fine personally, but very intense for company." WOOLMER 46. The "Union of Socialists-Revolutionaries Maximalists was a political party in the Russian Empire, a radical wing expelled from the Socialist-Revolutionary Party in 1906. The Union united agrarian terrorists, the 'Moscow Opposition' and other radical dissidents from the PSR in an independent party. The Maximalists officially split off from the PSR at its Second Congress in Imatra in 1906. Maximalists played a role in both the Revolution of 1905 and the Revolution of 1917. Many former SR Maximalists eventually joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolshevik) .Maximalists were so called because they demanded the full implementation of the 'maximum programme' in the expected revolution: full socialisation of the land, factories and all other means of production. The orthodox Socialist-Revolutionaries wanted to start with land reform but defer socialisation of other means of production. The Maximalists also rejected the PSR's version of a 'two-stage' revolution, a theory associated with V.M. Chernov. According to Chernov, the coming revolution in Russia would not be purely 'bourgeois-democratic' as the Social-Democrats claimed, but would include social and economic as well as political reforms. It would be a 'popular-democratic' revolution, and would transition into a full-blown 'labour-socialist' revolution later on. The Maximalists rejected this as Social-Democratic 'attentism' and argued that the coming Russian revolution would not be able to stop half-way; it was the two-stage theory, not Maximalism, that was unrealistic if it thought the toiling masses, once liberated, would content themselves with a bourgeois republic and gradual reforms." (Wikipedia, 2012) OCLC lists 9 copies. Publisher's typo on final page of No. 20/21: issue listed as "No. 20-25". Pages darkened but not fragile; some edgewear. Issue no. 24-26 worn with minor closed tears along gutter margin. Issue no. 8 outer wrappers detached but present. No 12/13 with small loss of paper and a few words. Overall, in Very Good Condition, a scarce complete run of this important journal. (RUS-11-37) [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        POEMS

London Constable & Co. 1924 - Rare First Edition. Limited to 750 numbered copies only. Large 8vo, publishers original blue cloth lettered in gilt and stamped in blind, t.e.g. xii, 434 pp. A superior copy of this very scarce book, fine and bright and unusually well preserved, without wear or blemish. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE POEMS. The first publication of Melville’s collected poems and the first time that many appear in print. Appearing for the first time "Author’s note (on the use of expletives)" pg. 129, "Miscellaneous Poems" pp. 297-349, and "At the Hostelry" pp. 351-434. Between 1875 and 1920 Melville had fallen deep into obscurity. William P. Trent's A HISTORY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE, 1903, gives Melville but three pages out of 593, and Wendell and Greenough's A HISTORY OF LITERATURE IN AMERICA, 1904, gives him nothing at all. The author's star began to rise in 1921 with the publication of Weaver's biography. The first volume of the collected works was published the following year and did much to expand American awareness of Melville's art. It stands alone as a truly important edition with the inclusion of 'The Poems' and 'Billy Budd,' both of which were here published separately for the first time. ‘The Poems’ appears as Volume XVI of the Standard Edition set.         To Charles Warren Stoddard [original typescript of poem]

Private 1924 - Original typed manuscript of a poem by George Sterling, signed by him at the bottom, entitled "To Charles Warren Stoddard". Date: 1909 or later, since the poem laments Stoddard's death, and Stoddard died on April 23rd, 1909, at Monterey, California. Stoddard, born in Rochester, NY, became a San Franciscan in his teens. He became a widely admired writer and poet, himself, in the late nineteenth century. George Sterling was a protege of both Jack London and Ambrose Bierce; Bierce became so enamored of Sterling's poem [this one] that he included it in his own collected works. 5 four-line stanzas. Laid in is a typed "Note to 'The Lake of Innisfree' ", that note, also by Sterling, is essentially an essay in which Sterling tells of a private publication by John Henry Nash of that William Butler Yeats' poem, and manifests Sterling's admiration of both Yeats and Nash. Also included is the typed verse 'The Lake of Innisfree' itself, presumably also typed by Sterling. Sterling's poem on Stoddard is an original, and is an extremely beautiful and moving lament on Stoddard's death. Fair enough, since Stoddard himself had earlier written a poem, "To George Sterling", which moved Clark Ashton Smith sufficiently that he included it in his remembrance, "An Appreciation of George Sterling". Serious mutual admiration all around - and I'm going to need a roster card. Condition: a few spots on the original poem, age toning and light wear-wrinkles on all three documents. Overall, Very Good. Provenance provided to purchaser. L21 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        The Call of the Canyon

Harper & Brothers, New York 1924 - First edition. Spine faded, modest overall wear, a near very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication: "Long Key, Feb 12, 1924 To Miss Blanche M. Bosworth Compliments of Zane Grey." Two vintage photographic postcards are laid in -- one of a young woman, another of three young women with a well-dressed gentleman whose hat shades his face somewhat, but whom we are reasonably certain is Grey (and with a pencil note indicating that the photo was taken on Long Key).         Legends of Charlemagne

1924. first edition. Wandering Knights, Lovely Virtuous Ladies, Giants, and Dragons…[WYETH, N.C., illustrator]. BULFINCH, Thomas. Legends of Charlemagne. [New York]: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, 1924. First edition illustrated by Wyeth. Quarto (9 3/16 x 6 13/16 inches; 233 x 174 mm.). xii, 273, [3, blank] pp. Color pictorial title-page and eight color plates. Original maroon cloth, front cover with an additional Wyeth illustration pasted-on, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, color pictorial endpapers. A very fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket with just a couple of minor chips on extremities. "The brush magic of that great painter-illustrator N.C. Wyeth makes this edition of Thomas Bulfinch's Legends of Charlemagne a thing of enchantment. There is no era more appealing to youth than that of Charlemagne. Youth ever responds to all that is brave, chivalric, and adventurous, and the exploits of the wandering knights and lovely, virtuous ladies over medieval Europe rouse in the young reader such ardor as an adult world has forgot the feel of. Mr. Wyeth's eight pages in full color illustrate these tales of Roland, Oliver, Rinaldo, Angelica, and Isabella as they have never been pictured before. And no later retelling can improve upon Bulfinch's classic form. The result is a gift book for boys and girls of rare beauty and worth." (dust jacket, front flap).Allen and Allen, p. 200; Dykes, Wyeth, 112.
