The "true" first edition of this collection of stories about a female criminal, and one of the rarest books published in the 20th Century.         Original watercolor: "Gypsy Camp"

ca. 1924. An attractive and evocative image by Ohio artist Earl Neff (1903-1993), an American regionalist best known for his 100-foot-long mural (still extant) in the Cleveland headquarters of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen. Neff was a prolific muralist, completing no fewer than seventeen public projects during his tenure with the Cleveland Federal Arts Project, of which he was Director from 1935-6. Neff's work is in the permanent collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Canton Museum of Art, and a number of his murals remain on public view. The current image captures an aspect of American culture that would all but disappear by the end of the Great Depression - an outdoor gypsy encampment, complete with tents and jalopies, the foreground occupied by a dark-complected, ethnically-costumed woman tending her campfire. Original graphite and watercolor sketch on thick paper, 18.5cm x 35cm (ca 7-1/2" x 13-3/4"). Apparently cut from a larger sheet; dimensions slightly uneven. Initialed, titled and dated in pencil, lower right. Colors vibrant and unfaded, free of creases, wear or soil; Fine.

        Modern French Music

Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company. 1924. First. First edition. Blue cloth gilt. Embossed stamp of Virgil Thomson on title page, wear and small tears to cloth mostly along the bottom extremities, else very good. Inscribed by Hill: "To Virgil Garnett Thomson, long-suffering and diligent assistant, his friend, Edward Burlingame Hill. Christmas, 1924." Hill was an American composer, little remembered today, but his influence was great. Among his students at Harvard were Thomson, Leonard Bernstein, Roger Sessions, Elliott Carter, and Walter Piston. Although we can find no printed acknowledgment of Thomson in the book, the inscription would indicate that he had a considerable part in its creation. .

Le Keepsake Galant. Ou les Délassements du Foutoir. Ouvrage orné de douze eaux-fortes libres.

Foutropolis, Aux dépens du Père Dupanloup, o. J. [d.i. Paris, Duflou, 1924]. - 8°. 204 S. und |12 erotische Radierungen| auf Tafeln. Orig.-Broschur mit Deckeltitel. |Erste Ausgabe|. Unbeschnitten. Einband etwas begriffen und angestaubt. Buchblock etwas verzogen. Vorsätze lichtschattig. Pia 697. Drouot, Imp. Biblio., 195. Bilderlex. IV,332f. Kearney 954 ("extremely hard to find.") -------------------- |English description available on request. | [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Autographed Letter, 25 March, 1924. 2pp. 8vo., 7" 1/4 x 10" 1/2 folded once, on the letterhead of the Grand Hotel Haussmann, Paris addressed to W. H. Exelby in Montreal. A chatty letter: "Tho' I'm worked to death I want to write to you with my own hand and thank you for your surprising letter. I have worked as a farm hand, stoker & waiter. I'm sending you "The Bomb" & some little booklets. which contain a number of my "Contemporary Portraits". These have sold better in the US than my short stories. I seem to have lost my way in life. A.S.(S) Burleson Wilson's Post Master General destroyed my magazine, Pearson's by holding up the mail on the pretext that he had been informed that there was something seditious in it. He took my money. I'm writing The Story of My Life. The most important book ever written / Yours Ever / Frank Harris" In very good or better condition with the original mailing envelope showing some use. "Frank Harris (1856 – 1931) was a British-born, naturalized-American author, editor, journalist and publisher, who was friendly with many well-known figures of his day. Though he attracted much attention during his life for his irascible, aggressive personality, editorship of famous periodicals, and friendship with the talented and famous, he is remembered mainly for his multiple-volume memoir My Life and Loves, which was banned in countries around the world for its sexual explicitness." - Wikipedia [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

London: Methuen & Co., 1924. First edition. Illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard throughout. 8vo, publisher’s original dark blue cloth, lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt on the spine and upper cover. Now handsomely presented in a blue morocco backed solander case and chemise. x,100 pp. A very pleasing and handsome copy with very minimal evidence of age. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST VOLUME ISSUED IN ONE OF THE GREATEST SERIES IN TWENTIETH CENTURY CHILDREN’S LITERATURE. The Pooh Stories of A.A. Milne stand out in the field of 20th century children’s literature. Their popularity, with both the young and the old, has only grown as the years have passed. The themes of these stories, and the gentle kindness of the characters, are forever poignant and touching. If a day ever comes when these books seem old fashion or out-of-style, one could only have pity for that future world. It should also be noted that Ernest Shepard’s illustrations for these titles are as outstanding -and as timeless - as the stories themselves. The books were originally published over the course of four years, beginning with WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG in 1924 and ending with HOUSE AT POOH CORNER in 1928.
