FINE CONTEMPORARY TERRA COTTA CRUSHED MOROCCO BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE (signed on front turn-ins), double gilt fillet border on covers, upper covers with gilt insignia incorporating the initials "S P," crossed anchors, and looping ropes with Pepys' (misspelled) motto in Latin on a ribbon above it, raised bands, spines gilt in double-ruled compartments with central ornament of either a crown, a sailor's knot, an anchor, or crossed quills, turn-ins ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With frontispiece portrait of the author. Spines lightly and uniformly sunned toward pink, otherwise AN EXTREMELY PLEASING SET IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION inside and out. Pepys' diary is available in various editions; the chief value of the present printing is that it is done on India paper, allowing the full substantial text to be contained in a very manageable space. And the compactness of this edition is here very much enhanced by the bindings, made with high quality morocco and expertly finished. (The Sangorski Latinist has, however, fallen short of perfection: Pepys chose as his personal motto "mens cujusque is est quisque," or "what a man's mind is, that is what he is," but here the first word is unfortunately spelled "mons," Latin for "mountain.").       Shakespeare and Company 1924 - 4th Printing of James Joyce's Ulysses Published in Paris in 1924 by Shakespeare and Company. This is the 4th printing, and only the second printing by Shakespeare and Company (the 1st printing was by Shakespeare and Co., but the 2nd and 3rd printings were done in the UK by a different publisher, the Egoist Press). One of the earliest obtainable printings after the first, due to the fact that many copies of the second and third printings (both by the Egoist Press) were destroyed by English and American authorities. Extremely fragile and in poor condition, with covers and many pages detached. Spine missing. It is rare to find such an early printing in the original wrappers that has not be hideously rebound, and therefore one that looks and feels much more like the original publication. Loose in the rubbed and rather marked outer wrappers, tanned at the edges and with a split to the lower portion of the front joint. First edition, first printing, one of 925 numbered copies (of a total edition of 976). With the signed presentation inscription to the half-title, "To Ernest Hemingway from Harold Stearns. Any guy who can write 'My Old Man' deserves this—and plenty of it. Paris, September, 1924". Stearns had been associate editor of The Dial prior to heading to Paris where he wrote of his fellow expatriates, of their lives and their writing. The reference in this inscription is to one of Hemingway's earliest published short stories. Hemingway made great claims for his own pugilistic capacity. Stearns perhaps meant this little picture book to serve as a gentle reminder that writing about the fight game is a good deal less painful than participation in it.

Hemingway intended this to be his first book (it's listed on the rear panel of Three Stories & Ten Poems), but publication was held up, allowing Robert McAlmon of Contact to publish Three Stories first. .

        Atlas City of Toronto Plate 119 [Mount Pleasant Cemetery,, Bayview Ave. & St. Clair Ave.]

      c. 1924, Toronto - Map of Toronto at the intersection of Mount Pleasant Rd. and Merton Ave. with Balliol Ave. to the North, Bayview Ave. to the East, St. Clair Ave. East to the South and a section of Mount Pleasant Cemetery to the West. English railway engineer, went to Canada in 1868, where he did not pursue engineering, but became a representative for the Sanborn Company which published fire insurance plans. From 1875 Goad began to compile and publish his own large-scale plans of Canadian towns from a base in Montreal, and soon became the largest private mapmaker in Canada. By 1885 Charles Goad had returned to Britain and established a branch in London. Goad?s highly detailed plans included information on property holdings, building construction, use and contents, and, like Sanborn?s, functioned as Fire Insurance Plans. Once leased to an insurance company the map volumes were regularly updated by a team of workers who over-pasted sections with new information onto the existing maps, some of them building up to many layers. Goad?s business rapidly expanded to cover the cities and industrial areas of Britain, Denmark, France, Egypt, Turkey, Venezuela, Bermuda, Mexico and South Africa. After his death the company was run by his three sons.       [1924] 1924 - Quarto (US letter, 11 × 8½ ins), 355 leaves typed on one side only, in blue and black ink; with two title pages not paginated. Bound sometime later in blue buckram, spine lettered in gilt. Housed in a dark blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine a little rubbed and sunned, slight marginal toning, the second title leaf with closed tear at foot, single punch-hole at upper inner corner from first binding, but the condition generally excellent. With extensive pencilled corrections in the author's hand on every page. Original manuscript of Bill the Conqueror, with final corrections for publication, presented by Wodehouse to his musical collaborator Jerome Kern (1885-1945), with the author's signed presentation inscription in ink on the typed title leaf: "To Jerry from Plum - P. G. Wodehouse 1924"; and with Kern's ink inscription below, re-presenting the manuscript to another of his collaborators, the German-born lyricist Gus Kahn (1886-1941): "And after fourteen years' enjoyment Jerry gives it with his affectionate regards to that grand old Wodehouse fan Gus Kahn. June 1938". Bill the Conqueror was first published in the UK on 14 November 1924 by Methuen & Co., London, and in the US on 20 February 1925 by George H. Doran, New York, the story having previously been serialised in the Saturday Evening Post from 24 May to 12 July 1924. The title leaf has Wodehouse's pencilled instructions to the typist: "Note to Typist. Two carbon copies, please. Will you bind them. Note. I have changed the names 'Ernest' and 'Dominic' to 'George' and 'Roderick' throughout. If I have omitted to make the alteration in any place, will you do it. [Signed with initials] PGW." At the foot of the page, Wodehouse has added: "Note. Bind Chapters 1-4 in one cover, apart from Chapters 5-11." And on the second title leaf, to chapters 5 to 11, Wodehouse repeats the instruction: "Note to Typist. Bind Chapters 5-11 in a separate cover from Chapters 1-4. Keep an eye open for the 'George' & 'Roderick' alterations. [Signed with initials] PGW." It is not clear why Wodehouse originally had the typescript bound in two: presumably Jerome Kern had them bound up together for reading. The typescript is corrected for publication, and shows (with a very few minor emendations) the final text as it appears in both the UK and US editions, including several additions made at this typescript. The cast of Bill the Conqueror includes the recurring characters Sir George Pyke (later Lord Tilbury), publishing magnate and founder of the Mammoth Publishing Company (who would later visit Blandings Castle in Heavy Weather (1933)), and his subordinate Percy Pilbeam, who appears in several novels, but is perhaps best known for his involvement with the denizens of Blandings Castle, in Summer Lightning (1929) and Heavy Weather (1933). A whole thesis could be written on Wodehouse's obsessive reworking of the name Bill. He uses it several times in titles: Bill the Conqueror; The Coming of Bill (novel); Good Morning, Bill (play); Bill the Bloodhound (short story in the volume The Man with Two Left Feet, in which Jeeves makes his debut). In Full Moon (1947), one of the imposters flitting round Blandings Castle is Gally's godson Bill Lister, a former amateur boxer turned artist. In Service with a Smile (1961), the muscular young curate Cuthbert "Bill" Bailey objects strongly to being blackmailed into stealing pigs. A recurrent character in the Ukridge stories is Wilberforce "Battling" Billson, another tough guy with a religious streak. Wodehouse even uses it at least twice for female characters: Wilhelmina ("Billie") Bennett in Three Men and a Maid (1922, UK title The Girl on the Boat); and "Bill" Shannon in The Old Reliable (1951). And the generally acknowledged highpoint of Wodehouse's outstanding lyrical work with his musical collaborators, Jerome Kern and Guy Bolton, was the song "Bill", with lyrics written by Wodehouse in 1917 and used by Kern in Showboat.       [Dresden], E. Raupp, 1924.. . Prägestempel mit Datum. - Erwin Raupp (1855? - 1931) war Hofphotograph in Dresden und ein bekannter Porträtist. Er porträtierte bekannte Künstler wie Franz Lenbach und den Schriftsteller Karl May, dessen bekannteste Porträts von ihm stammen. - May (1842 - 1912), war ab 1875 Redakteur bei H. G. Münchmeyer in Dresden und betreute verschiedene Unterhaltungsblätter (u.a. "Deutsches Familienblatt"). Seit 1877 freier Schriftsteller, schrieb er zunächst erzgebirgische Dorfgeschichten und exotische Novellen. In Pustets Familienzeitschrift "Deutscher Hausschatz" (1879 erhielt M. einen festen Mitarbeitervertrag) erschienen mit Unterbrechungen bis 1898 die sogenannten Reiseerzählungen aus fernen Ländern (u.a. Indianer-Erzählungen; Giölgeda padishanün, 1881, der erste Teil des Orientzyklus, aus dem später u.a. Durch die Wüste hervorging). Seit 1896 lebte er in Radebeul. Seit 1892 brachte der Freiburger Verleger Friedrich Ernst Fehsenfeld M.s Gesammelte Reiseromane heraus; sie wurden von M. zum Teil aus den Zeitschriftenpublikationen erarbeitet, zum Teil eigens für diese Ausgabe verfaßt (u.a. Winnetou I, 1893; Weihnacht, 1897). Vor die Öffentlichkeit trat er mit dem Anspruch, als Old Shatterhand oder Kara Ben Nemsi alle von ihm geschilderten Abenteuer selbst erlebt zu haben. M.s Reise- und Jugenderzählungen sind ethnographisch fundierte Abenteuererzählungen mit charismatischen Helden. In diese kurze Zeit fällt seine Beschäftigung mit Lyrik. Er veröffentlichte 1924 den vorliegenden Gedichtband, den er an Bekannte und Freunde verteilte, mit dem Gedanken Dichter zu werden. Die Themen der durchaus von großem Talent zeugenden Gedichte beschäftigen sich mit Religiösität, Naturverbundenheit und philosophischen Gedanken; sie geben damit auch Aufschluss über die geistig-seelischen Befindlichkeiten des jungen Kurt Georg Kiesinger. Ein Jahr später begann Kiesinger in Tübingen sein Geschichts- und Philosophiestudium, wechselte aber schon im Folgejahr nach Berlin ins juristische Fach. Anfangs als Kanzleianwalt kam er 1940 ins Reichsaussenministerium. Seine umstrittene Aktivität im Staatsapparat des Dritten Reichs wurde später als Mitläufertum eingestuft und Kiesinger vollständig entlastet. Handsomely bound in vertically ribbed blue-gray cloth stamped brightly in gilt on the front boards and on the spine. With yellow topstaining. Very clean and tight throughout; virtually unread. With a photographic frontispiece of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini at the Auto Club of London. All photos and diagrams are present. A lovely copy in a splendid dust jacket printed in black on blue-green paper. With the original price of $4.00 at the top of the inside front flap. With a touch of darkening to the spine and tiny chips at the top and bottom of the spine ends and at two of the corners. Printed on heavy stock, the jacket is sturdy and substantial. With touch of sunning to the top and bottom edges of the spine. A very handsome, collectible copy of Houdini's work on Spiritualism. Scarce in dust jacket in this condition. In the 1920s Houdini turned his energies toward debunking psychics and mediums, a pursuit that inspired and was followed by latter-day stage magicians. Houdini's training in magic allowed him to expose frauds who had successfully fooled many scientists and academics. He was a member of a Scientific American committee that offered a cash prize to any medium who could successfully demonstrate supernatural abilities. None was able to do so, and the prize was never collected. The first to be tested was medium George Valentine of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. As his fame as a "ghostbuster" grew, Houdini took to attending séances in disguise, accompanied by a reporter and police officer. Possibly the most famous medium whom he debunked was Mina Crandon, also known as "Margery". Houdini chronicled his debunking exploits in his book, A Magician Among the Spirits, co-authored with C. M. Eddy, Jr. (uncredited). These activities cost Houdini the friendship of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle, a firm believer in Spiritualism during his later years, refused to believe any of Houdini's exposés. Doyle came to believe that Houdini was a powerful spiritualist medium, and had performed many of his stunts by means of paranormal abilities and was using these abilities to block those of other mediums that he was "debunking". This disagreement led to the two men becoming public antagonists and led Sir Arthur to view Houdini as a dangerous enemy. (Wikipedia) First Edition. As a fledgling writer looking for solitude, it was in the comfort of Lucille Ingram's home that Truman began to write his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms. The bookplate, designed by Harvey Cushing himself, incorporates his family crest and motto, along with the initials of the long line of doctors from the Cushing family and the years they graduated medical school. Cushing signed with his initials "HC" when the recipient was family or close friend. For those inscriptions to folks he did not know well, he signed in full. Handsomely bound in half-leather over burgundy cloth. Gilt spine title and ruling. Original printed gray paper covers bound in. 8vo., 33pp followed by (50) blank leaves evidently added by the binder to enhance the appearance of the volume for the Cushing family. Small binder’s ticket on rear pastedown (W.A. De Podesta / Art Book Binder / Cleveland.) Map illustration facing the first page of text. A very good or better copy with sound, tight binding. Some light rubbing and wear to the extremities and along the outer joints. Modest age-toning to the endpapers and some darkening of the fore-edge areas adjacent to the leather corners. Text pages clean and unmarked. No creasing, tears or other flaws to the paper covers. A superb Cushing item (1869-1939), noted American neurosurgeon, an innovator of brain surgery, and the first to describe Cushing’s syndrome. Often called the father of modern neurosurgery, Cushing was a professor at Harvard starting in 1911, later served in a medical capacity with allied forces in World War I, and was with the Yale University School of Medicine from 1933 until his retirement in 1937. His literary credits include a 1926 Pulitzer Prize for his biography of another medical pioneer, Sir William Osler. Cushing Bibliography no. 224. "The essay shows evidence of much patient research, but as with the 'Osler' it was obviously a labor of love, since there was nothing that stirred him [Cushing] more than the stories of his pioneering forebears on both sides of the family who, discontented with their lot in New England journeyed to the Western Reserve where they set up their own vigorous way of life, their schools, and their traditions in medicine" - Fulton, Harvey Cushing, pp. 511. Tirage limité à 162 EXEMPLAIRES, celui-ci un des 110 numérotés sur vélin blanc d'Arches (n°74). Exemplaire enrichi d'un MAGNIFIQUE DESSIN ORIGINAL à l'encre noire et à l'aquarelle, à pleine page, signé par Auguste Brouet. Un petit MOT AUTOGRAPHE signé par l'auteur, daté du « 4 mars 1919 » et adressé à l'éditeur Van Bever, a été contrecollé sur le second feuillet blanc. Auguste BROUET (1872-1841) est un graveur peu connu du grand public mais très recherché par les amateurs, et dont Gustave Geffroy disait qu'il était «illustre dans la pénombre», expression qui mettait l'accent, en outre, sur ce clair obscur qu'il pratiquait selon la leçon de Rembrandt.
