        The Call of the Canyon

Harper & Brothers, New York 1924 - First edition. Spine faded, modest overall wear, a near very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication: "Long Key, Feb 12, 1924 To Miss Blanche M. Bosworth Compliments of Zane Grey." Two vintage photographic postcards are laid in -- one of a young woman, another of three young women with a well-dressed gentleman whose hat shades his face somewhat, but whom we are reasonably certain is Grey (and with a pencil note indicating that the photo was taken on Long Key).         Legends of Charlemagne

1924. first edition. Wandering Knights, Lovely Virtuous Ladies, Giants, and Dragons…[WYETH, N.C., illustrator]. BULFINCH, Thomas. Legends of Charlemagne. [New York]: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, 1924. First edition illustrated by Wyeth. Quarto (9 3/16 x 6 13/16 inches; 233 x 174 mm.). xii, 273, [3, blank] pp. Color pictorial title-page and eight color plates. Original maroon cloth, front cover with an additional Wyeth illustration pasted-on, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, color pictorial endpapers. A very fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket with just a couple of minor chips on extremities. "The brush magic of that great painter-illustrator N.C. Wyeth makes this edition of Thomas Bulfinch's Legends of Charlemagne a thing of enchantment. There is no era more appealing to youth than that of Charlemagne. Youth ever responds to all that is brave, chivalric, and adventurous, and the exploits of the wandering knights and lovely, virtuous ladies over medieval Europe rouse in the young reader such ardor as an adult world has forgot the feel of. Mr. Wyeth's eight pages in full color illustrate these tales of Roland, Oliver, Rinaldo, Angelica, and Isabella as they have never been pictured before. And no later retelling can improve upon Bulfinch's classic form. The result is a gift book for boys and girls of rare beauty and worth." (dust jacket, front flap).Allen and Allen, p. 200; Dykes, Wyeth, 112.

Builders of Modern Indian: MAHATMA GANDHI An Essay in Appreciation

Calcutta Association Press 1924 - Rare First Edition, SIGNED AND DATED BY MAHATMA GANDHI. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece portrait and 5 additional portraits from various sources. 8vo, publisher's original paper covered boards printed on the upper cover in black, backed in gray/blue cloth, the spine gilt lettered. 136 pp. A very attractive and well preserved copy, far better than would be expected for a Calcutta printing of the period, the prelims with a bit of age evidence, the spine just a touch toned. SIGNED AND DATED BY MAHATMA GANDHI IN 1926, one of the greatest men of the age. The work is rare in first edition and in collectable condition and we know of no other copy signed by Gandhi. "The importance of the collection of chief manager Ole Olsen in Kopenhagen, which is described by this catalogue to lovers of art and science, consists chiefly in the variety and completeness with regard to the quantity of works of old industrial art. Only a few of the great collections of the old and new continent can rival this collection in extent, quality and variety of the industrial antiquities. Nearly all spheres of artistic work from the prehistorical period to the end of the eighteenth century are represented by characteristic, sometimes excellent works... This work brings to lovers of art and scholars of old industrial art, a catalogue such has not been published since the great catalogues of the Spitzer, Lanna and Morgan collections. Giving the descriptions in Danish, English and German, the possessor and the editor hope to render a service to the science of the history of art." - from Introduction.         Autograph Quotation Signed

NP. Jan. 25, 1924. Autograph Quotation signed in full, "Women vote on equal terms / with men in 26 countries / of the world. / Carrie Chapman Catt / Jan. 25, 1924". On card stock, 5-1/8" x 3-1/4", soiled on rear where traces of glue and paper remain, a bit of edgewear, else very good. & Carrie Chapman Catt (1859-1947), suffragist and women's rights advocate, was Chairman of the Committee on Organization, a committee created after she persuaded Susan B. Anthony of its necessity. Catt proved an able lieutenant to Anthony and succeeded her as the head of the NAWSA in 1900. She developed a two-prong campaign which came to be known as Mrs. Catt's "Winning Plan" [NAW] and which sought passage of a suffrage amendment while continuing to push for winning suffrage for women on a state level. Her tact and statesmanship won over Woodrow Wilson and other influential politicians. [Robert Booth Fowler's essay "Carrie Chapman Catt, Strategist" in ONE WOMAN, ONE VOTE is an invaluable for its fine analysis of Catt's political skills. He emphasizes how controversial her "winning plan" was when Catt insisted be pursued on the federal level.] Catt cleared the path for the 19th Amendment by leading the NAWSA in a campaign in 1917 to unseat four unsympathetic senators. As a politician and a general she was quite prepared to promulgate a 'take no prisoners' policy when necessary. Her life's work culminated in 1920 with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment giving women the vote. According to NAW, "To Mrs. Catt more than any other single figure beside Susan B. Anthony...American women owe their right to vote." NAW I, pp. 309-313. Wheeler, One Woman, One Vote, pp. 295- 315.

Imp.

Berlin: Julius Springer, 1924. First edition. Offprint of this important paper in the history of general relativity. Hilbert declared himself that this paper was essentially just a reprint, with minor editorial notes, of his two earlier papers under the same title from 1915-16, in which he presented the field equations of general relativity before Einstein did. However, as several Hilbert biographers have pointed out, the 1924 version of his theory contains “major conceptual adjustments and a recognition of its deductive structure” (Renn & Stachel: The Genesis of General Relativity, p.930). “... it was Hilbert’s aim to give not just a theory of gravitation but an axiomatic theory of the world. This lends an exalted quality to his paper, from the title, ‘Die Grundlagen der Physik’, The Foundations of Physics, to the concluding paragraph, in which he expressed his conviction that his fundamental equations would eventually solve the riddles of atomic structure” (Pais: Subtle is the Lord, pp. 257-258). On 21 November 1915 Hilbert submitted a paper to the Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften in Göttingen which contained the correct field equations of gravitation; Einstein submitted a paper to the Prussian Academy five days later containing the same equations. Hilbert derived the equations from a variational principle, which he was the first to state correctly. His paper also contains the statement, but not the proof, of what is now known as Noether’s theorem (proved by Emmy Noether in 1918). This theorem implies the existence of four identities which Hilbert believed incorrectly were the four electromagnetic equations, and hence that electromagnetism was essentially a gravitational phenomenon (it was later understood that the identities are the energy-momentum conservation laws). “These and other errors are expurgated in an article Hilbert wrote in 1924 [the present paper]. It is again entitled ‘Die Grundlagen der Physik’ and contains a synopsis of his 1915 paper and a sequel to it written a year later. Hilbert’s collected works, each volume of which contains a preface by Hilbert himself, does not include these two early papers, but only the one of 1924” (Pais, p.258). See pp. 399-403 of ‘David Hilbert and the Axiomatization of Physics’ by Leo Corry for a detailed account of the “remarkable differences between the early printed versions of the communications and the 1924 article”. Offprint from: Mathematische Annalen, Band 92, Heft 1/2, 1924, pp.1-32. Original printed wrappers; small scratch to rear wrapper, otherwise fine and clean. Rare in offprint issue.
