        The Fire in the Flint

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1924. First. First edition. Some spotting and faint staining to the boards, a near very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author to Anne and Clarence Dillon: "To Ann [sic] and Clarence -- With all good wishes -- Ever sincerely Walter F. White. New York City, 29 August 1924." Clarence Dillon, a bond broker and one of the richest men in the country, and his wife Anne, were the parents of C. Douglas Dillon, who served as Secretary of the Treasury. The author's first book, one of the first wave of novels from the Harlem Renaissance, about a black medical doctor who returns to his Georgia home hoping to improve the lot of his fellows, only to be met with prejudice, suspicion, and violence. It deals in part with lynching, a practice against which White, in his capacity as the outspoken longtime executive secretary of the NAACP, waged a long and ultimately successful campaign. Signed copies are scarce. .

The Show-Off: A Transcript of Life in Three Acts

Boston: Little Brown. 1924. First. First edition. Preface by Heywood Broun. Fine in a presentable, good plus dustwrapper with some chipping at the top of the rear panel, affecting some text, and a scrape on the front panel, also affecting the text of a blurb. A wildly successful Broadway comedy that made Kelly the most talked-of playwright on Broadway (a few decades later his niece, Grace, would reign first in Hollywood and then in Monaco). It was the basis for three films: a 1926 Malcolm St. Clair version featuring Louise Brooks and Ford Sterling; a 1934 Charles Resiner version re-scripted by Herman J. Mankiewicz and featuring Spencer Tracy; and finally a 1946 Harry Beaumont version with Red Skelton and Marilyn Maxwell. Rare in jacket. .

        The Marble Faun

Boston: The Four Seas Company,, 1924. Octavo. Original mottled green boards, white paper title labels to front board and spine printed in green. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Front hinge tender, small production flaw to rear hinge but a stunning copy in the dust jacket of a famously vulnerable publication. First edition, sole printing. Signed and dated 31 December 1924 by the author on the title page and with his further signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "To Dink [?Kearsley] from Bill Faulkner". The fact that Faulkner uses the familiar form of his own forename indicates that he was on good terms with the recipient, but that person's identity has eluded us and the several colleagues whose opinion we have asked. Faulkner employed the recipient's unusual forename in his fiction for the character Dink Quistenberry in The Town, who marries into the Snopes family and runs the Jefferson (formerly Snopes) Hotel. Dink takes Byron Snopes's children into his car when they arrive at the Jefferson depot. The Marble Faun is the author's first book, of which only 500 of the projected 1,000 copies were printed and some 300 of those were later pulped. The official publication date was, after some delay, fixed as 15 December 1924 and the earliest dated presentation copies were signed on the 19th.

The Works of H.G. Wells [28 Volumes]

London: T. Fisher Unwin, Ltd 1924-1927, 1st edition, Atlantic Edition limited to 820 presentation sets. () Very good in good dust jacket. Octavo. Original red buckram with gilt title on spines. Gilt circle of front with authors gilt initials inside. Gilt top edge, else untrimmed. Printed on rag paper with watermarks "HGW". Signed on limitation page, and authors personal inscription on half title page, both within Volume 1. General introduction to the set in Volume 1, each volume has a special preface by the author. 21 Volumes have full tan paper dustjackets, with title on spine and authors initials inside a circle on front, all in red lettering. A few have minor chipping and small tears. 2 volumes have poor dustjackets; one with no spine pieces intact, and the other is missing tail section of spine and front bottom left portion. 5 Volumes have no dustjackets. Set is inscribed "To J.W. Dunne with warmest good wishes on his marriage, H.G.Wells", as well as signed by Wells on the limitation page. Interestingly, Wells has put the initials of J.W.Dunne (JWD) on the limitations page, instead of numbering it. John William Dunne was a British soldier who fought in the Second Boer War. After being injured, he studied aeronautics and became a well respected pioneer in the field of early aeroplane design. Wells and Dunne met in 1902 and Wells encouraged Dunne to build small test models at the beginning of his aeronautical career. It is said that Dunne arranged flights for Wells in 1912 / 1913, and that Wells often referenced his inspiration for "The War in the Air" (1908) in part to Dunne. Wells story, "The Queer Story of Brownlow Newspaper" (1931), references Dunne at the beginning and the end. In Dunne's first philosophical book, "An Experiment of Time" (1927) in which he developed his theory of the nature of time and consciousness, he discussed Wells book "The Time Machine" (1895) and praised Wells ideas and plot development. Wells gave the book a positive review, saying it "stirred his imagination vividly". In 1928, Dunne married Cecily Twistleton-Wykeham-Fiennes who was daughter of the 18th Baron Saye and Sele, at which time this set was gifted by H.G.Wells. It is unusual that an entire set would be gifted, as typically a volume or two was gifted. Great copies of a rare set, with a fascinating association!.

Rare in jacket. .
