        Rare Original Lon Chaney Portrait

Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Hollywood 1924 - A rare original 8" x 10" portrait of Lon Chaney in his clown make-up and costume from the film "He Who Gets Slapped" that was directed by the legendary Swedish director Victor Seastrom. The cast included Norma Shearer and John Gilbert. Stamped credits on the verso of the still does not even list Gilbert. 1 old tape mend to the verso. Near fine. Also included is a scene still from Chaney's film "The Monster" which does not picture Chaney. The sitll is a close-up of a strange looking man (Johnny Arthur?) with 4 small women in slips beneath his face. There is wear to this still: old tape mends to the verso, chipping and creasing. About good. Also included is a large original ad from a Swedish film magazine of the period for the film. Lon Chaney is pictured in a drawing dressed as a clown. The film also starred John Gilbert & Norma Shearer, neither of which are either pictured or mentioned. Chaney is also not mentioned. Wear and chipping to the margins of the ad, along with mends. The artwork is untouched. vg. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Secret Societies and Subversive Movements *First Edition*

Boswell Printing & Publishing Co., Ltd., London, 1924, Hard Cover, Book Condition: Fair, First EditionSize: 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall, 419 pages. Index. Footnotes. Frontis portrait of Adam Weishaupt. "I have felt impelled to devote one more book to the Revolution as a whole by going this time further back into the past and attempting to trace its origins from the first century of the Christian era. For it is only by taking a general survey of the movement that it is possible to understand the causes of any particular phase of its existence. The French Revolution did not arise merely out of conditions or ideas peculiar to the eighteenth century, nor the Bolshevist Revolution out of political and social conditions in Russia on the teaching of Karl Marx. Both these explosions were produced by forces which, making use of popular suffering and discontent, had long been gathering strength for an onslaught not only on Christianity, but on all social and moral order." - from Preface. Bookplate upon front free endpaper. Last two leaves of index loose but present. Back free endpaper not present. Front board loosely attached. Tiny bit of writing atop last blank page. No other markings noticed. Gilt lettering upon backstrip worn but legible.

Klonklavation Celebration Michigan Knights of the Ku Klux Klan July 4th, 1924 (Original Panoramic Photograph)

Owosso, Mich.: Cartwrights Photography, 1924. Original panoramic photograph, 8" x 41 3/4", unframed, rolled. Near Fine, slight soiling rear, 1/4" tear and small crease top edge. Original stamp in blue inkon rear stating "Duplicates can be had for $1.50 at Cartwrights, Owosso". Milton V. Cartwright is listed in the "Directory of Early Michigan Photographers" by David V. Tinder, published by Clements Library, 2013. One of the largest gatherings ever of the Ku Klux Klan, over 100,000 people swarmed to Jackson, Michigan on July 4th, 1924 to witness or take part in the fair-like festivities of the so-called "Klonklavation". Thousands of Klansmen marched through the streets of Jackson in a parade that stretched for 2 miles and included 17 floats, 8 bands, and a women's drum corps. At the meeting grounds, which were closely guarded by several hundred Klansmen, the crowds were entertained by a biplane and aerial stuntsman( the plane and a parachutist are seen above the campgrounds in the photograph!). A truly amazing and RARE photograph showing the Klan at the height of their numbers in the US. Internal divisions, criminal behavior by leaders, and external opposition brought about a collapse in membership by 1930.. First Printing. Photograph. Near Fine.

Atlas City of Toronto Plate 132 [Lawrence Ave West, Yonge St. & Fairlawn Ave.]

      c. 1924, Toronto - Map of Toronto at the intersection of Greer Rd. and Fairlawn Ave. with Deloraine Ave. to the North, Yonge St. to the East., Lawrence Ave. to the South and Grey Rd. to the West. English railway engineer, went to Canada in 1868, where he did not pursue engineering, but became a representative for the Sanborn Company which published fire insurance plans. From 1875 Goad began to compile and publish his own large-scale plans of Canadian towns from a base in Montreal, and soon became the largest private mapmaker in Canada. By 1885 Charles Goad had returned to Britain and established a branch in London. Goad?s highly detailed plans included information on property holdings, building construction, use and contents, and, like Sanborn?s, functioned as Fire Insurance Plans. Once leased to an insurance company the map volumes were regularly updated by a team of workers who over-pasted sections with new information onto the existing maps, some of them building up to many layers. Goad?s business rapidly expanded to cover the cities and industrial areas of Britain, Denmark, France, Egypt, Turkey, Venezuela, Bermuda, Mexico and South Africa. After his death the company was run by his three sons. Copyrights and assets of the Canadian branch of the company were sold to The Underwriter?s Survey Bureau in 1931., Size : 457x707 (mm), 18x27.875 (Inches), Printed in Color, 0

Tables; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 157 pages; An important and ground-breaking book in modern Cryptanalysis written by the first user of Statistical Analysis in this area. [Friedman]. Rubber stamps on front wrap read ?"Received/ Office of the Commander/ U. S. Atlantic Fleet Train. ?" and ?"U. S. S. Lawrence. ?" The former rubber stamp is discolored (obscuring the word ?"office?"). Notation in lower portion of front wrap is not entirely legible, but appears to be ?"Office of Comtrain/ 10 April, 1924.?" Wear in the vicinity of the 2 original holepunches along spine. Lacking the upper and lower 1 ½ inches of spine. Loss at upper right of rear wrap. Other corners of wraps are creased/curled/slightly rounded (with minor effects on corners of first and last leaves). Insecting to upper portion of title and subsequent leaf and to lower margin of first several leaves. Small stain to title. 1st edition. Authored by William F. Friedman of the Signal School at Camp Vail, NJ, this is the first published work to systematize the nomenclature of cryptology, and is the first full-length book to use the term ?"cryptanalysis?" (which Friedman first coined in 1921 or 1922). It is also the first work on codebreaking published by the Federal Government. Aside from providing terminology, it serves as a manual for decoding cryptograms. The terminology and techniques that Friedman describes continue to serve as the basis of cryptology today. Some codes marked in pencil. Charts, codes and tables. A most scarce item. ; 0 .

Signed 1924 Letter from James George Frazer with The Golden Bough

The Book League of America, 1924-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. A two-page letter from the Scottish anthropologist and author of the classic The Golden Bough, with the book it was once attached to. The letter is a single folded sheet, presumably on the author's stationary (Printed "Lanfine, Hills Road, Cambridge") dated April 23, 1924, apparently to scientist Dorothy S. Lubin. She (with David I. Macht) authored a treatise titled "A Phyto-Pharmacological Study of Menstrual Toxin" in The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics in 1924. Frazer thanks her for her article and vows to include her research about the physiological dangers of menses in future editions of the Golden Bough. Her investigations "help to show that savages are not such fools as we are apt to take them for," he writes, and signs the letter. Also includes the first volume of The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion. New York: The Book League of America, 1929. 392 p. Green cloth with gilt lettering. Vol. 1 of 2. No jacket. Very Good condition. Clean pages, rubbed lettering on spine. Bookplate on paste down. Glue stain on paste down from where letter was affixed.
