Bronzes antiques de la Chine appartenant à C. T. Loo et Cie.

Librairie Nationale d'Art et d'Histoire, 1924, Paperback, Book Condition: Very Good, First French EditionSize: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall, Issued October 30, 1924. G. van Oest, editor. Printed by l'Imprimerie Protat Frères a Macon. With heliotype plates produced by Léon Marotte. First and presumed only printing of this book. With unstated limitation but probably no more than 500 copies printed. Principal text in French and English, with secondary text in Chinese. 13.5 x 10.5 inches. Original paper wrappers and over-wrappers, European-style. The over-wrappers are somewhat age-darkened, and with title page reproduced on the front over-wrapper. Virtually unbumped spine head. Spine tail with half-inch tear. Unbumped corners. The wrapper is firmly attached to the text-block. Very light, seven-inch long moisture stain to the front wrapper; quite minor, a cosmetic issue only, and not showing on the underside of the wrapper. Else the wrappers and over-wrappers are exceptionally clean. Off-setting to the front and rear FEPs from the over-wrappers. The book contains 68 numbered pages, plus 40 unnumbered pages of XL duotone plates, as called for. A few of the plates with the notation "sold" in the margin in soft lead pencil. With gently deckled top, fore and bottom page edges to a handsome effect. The book is clean, inside and out, except as noted. A Very Good copy. Very scarce in any condition. An extremely valuable reference work for collectors and dealers of ancient Chinese bronzes. Specifically, this is a catalogue of ancient bronzes that Loo brought from China to France in the early 1920s and offered for sale at his Paris gallery. The principal art-historical periods mentioned in the catalogue include the Shang, Chou, Ts'in, Han and Tang Dynasties. The Chinese art dealer C. T. Loo (1880-1957) held court at his galleries in Paris, New York, Shanghai and Beijing. He stocked frescoes, temple statues and freshly excavated bronzes, in addition to jades, porcelains and other antiquities. An undoubted connoiseur, Loo was accused of looting priceless originals as well as knowingly marketing fakes during his career. He is still controversial in China. As is noted in the introduction to this very catalogue, even in the early years of the 20th century the market was flooded with reproductions of antique Chinese bronzes and even a discerning eye was sometimes fooled.

1924. . [114] pp. Illustrated throughout. 8vo., 228 x 160 mm, bound in original publisher's black, white, and red illustrated wrappers, in a new red cloth folding box with title gilt on black leather spine label. Vienna: Kunsthandlung Wuerthle & Sohn, 1924. |~||~||~||~||~||~| This exhibition catalogue of new theater technology in Europe represents avant-garde book design at its best. Kiesler oversaw every aspect of the design and printing -- from the cover to the layout of the advertisements. Friedrich Kiesler (1890-1965), an Austrian-American architect, theater designer, artist, and sculptor, was engaged as a theater and art exhibition designer in the 1920s in Vienna and Berlin. In 1923 he joined the De Stijl group and came to know many of the major figures of the European avant-garde. He arranged the world premiere in Vienna on September 24, 1924, of the 16-minute film Ballet mécanique, directed by Dudley Murphy and Fernand Legér, with Man Ray. This catalogue is rare and sought-after, and generally unfindable in such pristine condition. Andel, Avant Garde Page Design 241 (covers reproduced, p. 192).

'Nr. 35 V 1923' [printed to the lower margin] has been reduced to 'Nr. 35.'" Website of the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna Eduard Steuermann (1892-1964), pianist and composer, was one of the central figures in Schoenberg's circle. He played the piano part in several first performances of Schoenberg's works, including Pierrot Lunaire and the Piano Concerto. From 1938 on he lived in the United States. A "drama with music" in one act to a libretto by the composer, Die glückliche Hand [The Hand of Fate] was first performed at the Volksoper in Vienna on October 14, 1924, with Fritz Stiedry conducting. "This work was begun in 1910, but much of the music, including the first and last of the four scenes, was not composed until 1912-13. Like its companion piece, Erwartung, it contains only one singing character. It is shorter, lasting only 20 minutes or so, but the action is far more complex, involving two mimed roles, a chorus and elaborate scenic effects synchronized with constantly changing coloured lighting. This last feature was also used by Kandinsky in Der gelbe Klang, but Schoenberg did not know about it at the time. His conception coincides with his own most intense period of activity as a painter."         Voyages et glorieuses decouvertes des grands navigateurs et explorateurs Français

Paris: Tolmer, circa, 1924. Folio, illustrated with fifty-four stencil-coloured illustrations and a double-page colour composition, in addition to two folding maps; an attractive copy in the original illustrated boards, a little rubbed at the corners. Pochoir masterpiece. An outstanding French children's book of the 1920s and an unusually bold and daring example of pochoir design.Edy Legrand (1892-1970) was a leading illustrator of the Art Deco era, renowned for challenging traditional notions of children's book design. This folio, celebrating the great French explorers of the Pacific and Americas, was printed using the pochoir method of multiple colour stencilling guards. The resulting images are remarkable for their strong lines and vivid colouration.A prolific artist, Legrand illustrated a wide range of material including Don Quixote, The Three Musketeers and Dante's Inferno. Nonetheless, his children's books - remarkable for their blend of naïveté and confident design - are considered his most enduring productions. Legrand later worked in the United States, and eventually settled in Morocco where he produced oil paintings now considered modern masterpieces.Plates from Voyages et Glorieuses Decouvertes... were included in Hillier's exhibition catalogue The World of Art Deco, (Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 1972).

        NGC 6822, A Remote Stellar System", Astrophysics Journal 62, 1925, pp. 409-433

FIRST EDITION OF "THE SEMINAL PAPER" IN WHICH EDWIN HUBBLE IDENTIFIES 15 VARIABLE STARS 11 OF WHICH WERE CEPHEIDS & presents the first step of a discovery that "made as great a change in man's conception of the universe as the Copernican revolution 400 years before" - the realization of the immensity of the universe (presented here) and his discovery four years later that the universe was in fact expanding (Wikipedia; Dictionary of Scientific Biography). In late 1924, Hubble was using a 100 inch telescope and observing the Cephid in Andromeda when he realized something that took his breath away: the timing of the Cephid clearly demarked it as being 900,000 light years away, the equivalent of ten times beyond the furthest reaches of the Milky Way. Prior to Hubble's observation, scientists believed that the Milky Way was the entire universe (then estimated to be between 100,000 to 300,000 light years across. Hubble realized that all prior measurements of the universe had vastly underestimated its scale. Using the periods of the Cepheid variable stars in NGC 6822 to estimate their distance, Hubble calculated that the star system had to be twice as far away as [the current] estimate of the size of the entire Milky Way universe (600,000 light years vs. 300,000 light years),demonstrating that the Milky Way is just a part of the universe, not its entirety. "Hubble began circulating his findings in 1924, and it was first reported in a New York Times article in November of that year. Hubble formally reported this conclusion to American Astronomical Society at its meeting in Washington, DC, in late December 1924, and [that speech was] first published in the April 1925 issue of Popular Astronomy" (Wenner Collection". The paper offered, "NGC 6822" is Hubble's personal presentation of his findings, here put forth in far greater detail than had been earlier presented. CONDITION & DETAILS: Chicago: The University of Chicago Press. Full volume. Ex-libris Cambridge Observatory Library bearing only two stamps on the title page and no other markings whatsoever (inside or out). 4to (9.75 x 7; 244 x 175mm). 15 plates, 2 of which relate to Hubble's paper (as well, NGC 6822 includes 5 tables). Bound in contemporary two toned cloth; gilt ruled and gilt lettered at the spine. Minor scuffing and toning to the boards. Tightly and very solidly bound. Bright and very clean throughout.
